Scandalous Highlanders #2

Rogue with a Brogue

Rate this book
A Rogue For Every Lady

London, 1817: Stuck in a Mayfair ballroom, thanks to his lovestruck brother, Highlander Arran MacLawry wants nothing but a bit of distraction from an arranged betrothal—and a clever auburn-haired lass in a vixen's mask promises just that . . . until he discovers that she's the granddaughter of the Campbell, chief of clan MacLawry's longtime rival. Despite their families' grudging truce, falling for fiery Mary Campbell is a notion too outlandish even for this Highlander…

The Thrill Of The Forbidden

Raised on tales of savage MacLawrys, Mary is stunned to realize the impressively strapping man in the fox's mask is one of them. Surely the enemy shouldn't have such a broad chest, and such a seductive brogue? Not that her curiosity matters—any dalliance between them is strictly forbidden, and she's promised to another. But with the crackling spark between them ready to catch flame, love is worth every risk…

Suzanne was born in Southern California sometime in the latter half of the 20th century. In the way that some people are born knowing they want to be astronauts or cellists, Suzanne always knew she wanted to be a writer. Early dreams of becoming a zoologist and writing true stories about her adventures in Africa were crushed, however, after she viewed a television special about the world’s most poisonous snakes; she did NOT want to write about how she’d been bitten and lost a limb to a cobra. Thankfully at the same time the movie “Star Wars” premiered, and she realized that she could make up adventures and write about them, and not be eaten by deadly predators while doing research.

She dabbled in romantic fantasy writing for a year or two after graduating with a degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, until her affection for traditional Regency romances led her to write one for fun. After several encouraging rejections from publishers, she snared the interest of the world’s best and most patient literary agent, who advised her to revise the manuscript. This ultimately led to the publication of her first book, The Black Duke’s Prize, from Avon Books in the Spring of 1995. A second Regency, Angel’s Devil, followed that Fall.

When Avon folded its traditional Regency line, Suzanne was encouraged to try her hand at historical romance. As she remained keenly interested in England’s Regency period, she decided to attempt another manuscript set in that time. Lady Rogue hit the shelves in March of 1997. She wrote a total of 29 books for Avon, including two anthologies and a five-part contemporary series which received a pair of starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. One of those books, Twice the Temptation, was named one of the five best romances of the year by PW in 2007.

In 2002 her well-known love of all things “Star Wars” led to an invitation to appear on the E! channel in the television special “Star Wars: The Force Is Back”, where she discussed the romance in the movie series and ended up with more air time than George Lucas.

In 2010 Suzanne left Avon Books for St. Martin’s Press, where she continues to pen historical romance novels. Her 31st book, Taming an Impossible Rogue, is set to arrive in March 2012.

Suzanne is known for her humorous characters, sexy bad boys, and whip-sharp, witty dialogue. She currently resides in Placentia, California with several hundred guppies and various other tropical fish, and handful of very loud, spinach-loving finches. And her collection of action figures and statues from “Star Wars”, “Lord of the Rings”, “X-Men”, and “Pirates of the Caribbean”. Everybody needs some inspiration, after all.

A nice romantic light adventure romance! This book did not have the depth and humor some of her other books have, but it's still a fun decent read.

I enjoyed the fast pacing and cute elements. I do wish there had at least been an epilogue.

I don't think this is a special story or anything that i would reread again. Still, it was a nice book!

This was a wonderful book. Initially, I enjoyed the effortless chemistry between the leads and found it a pleasant read. But by the end, I was holding my breath at how well Enoch sustains the tension of their situation. Definitely recommended to fans of Scottish historical romance.

Overall rating: 4.5/5.0 stars.

I've given this a B at AAR.

Sometimes when I request review books for AAR, I’ll choose one or two titles from the list we’re sent and then I’ll ask our esteemed editor to throw in another couple of books to make up the numbers. This was one of those “throw-ins”, but I’ve read and enjoyed other books by this author, so I was quite pleased when it arrived. It was only when I read the synopsis that my heart sank, and I thought “oh, no – not another one of those Romeo and Juliet-esque plots about star-crossed lovers from opposing Highland clans!”

Fortunately, however, Ms Enoch shows what a good author can do with a well-worn trope, and the book exceeded my – admittedly low – expectations, turning out to be a well-written and developed character-driven romance featuring two engaging central characters.

At a masked ball in London, Lord Arran MacLawry, younger brother of Ranulf, the Marquess of Glengask, dances with an enticing young woman who clearly knows his identity while he has no idea of hers. He’s completely smitten with her, only to discover that she is Mary Campbell, granddaughter of the Duke of Alkirk, The Campbell himself – and as a result absolutely the last woman with whom he should have danced or about whom he should entertain thoughts of any kind, let alone amorous ones. For the MacLawrys and the Campbells are age-old enemies, a rivalry that dates back beyond living memory.

But clannish animosity cannot control thoughts or emotions, and even though she knows she should put him out of her mind, Mary is equally taken with Arran. The attraction between them is irresistible, and they begin to meet secretly, wanting to make the most of the time they have together before each of them has to marry someone else for the good of their respective clans. But disaster strikes when they are discovered, and Mary’s father informs her that she will marry her cousin Charles, a man she detests. In despair, she manages to get word to Arran, and they run away together.

The story is thus a kind of road-trip with a difference – the difference being that the protagonists are already in love before undertaking their journey. In the short time they’ve known each other, Mary and Arran have already developed a close affinity, and their time on the road allows them to discover more about each other and to fall irrevocably and deeply in love.

Arran has already realised that Mary is the woman for him, even if it means he’ll be a stranger to his own family and will probably be forever looking over his shoulder for a Campbell attack. He senses, however, that even though she is attracted to him and probably more than half in love with him, Mary is not quite as committed to their course as he is, so Arran determines to give her time and space to make up her own mind. It’s important that she choose him for his own sake, not because she feels grateful to him for rescuing her from her cousin or because she’s been compromised. Mary is initially reluctant to burn any bridges or cut the ties to her old life completely, in case she should need or want to return to it; and part of the story is about how she comes to realise that she can’t envisage a future without Arran and prepares to defy her clan in order to follow her heart.

There’s quite a lot in the story about the enmity between the two clans – talk of crofters being run off their land and villages burned out, which are things that were certainly going on in Scotland at the time the novel is set. Even so, I still can’t quite pin down the reasons behind the intense hatred between the two clans, which perhaps is the point, as both Arran and Mary try to obtain definitive reasons for it from their relatives – and nobody can answer them. But it did make those aspects of the story rather nebulous, and I occasionally lost patience with all the clannish posturing.

There’s family conflict, too, as Arran butts heads with Ranulf over the fact that because the latter has become engaged to the English lady he loves, Arran is going to have to marry the lady who has been chosen for him in order to strengthen the MacLawry clan alliances. Arran is, quite understandably, furious at the prospect – and the double standard – although he is prepared to do what must be done for the sake of his clan. But he believes that Ranulf is “selling out” to the English simply to appease his Sassenach bride, and allows his anger to cloud his judgement about his brother’s actions. I can’t say I blame him.

The two protagonists are strongly characterised and I particularly enjoyed the way the author brings Mary to see that her comfortable life had been spent in a gilded cage – and that there is much more to life than fulfilling the expectations of others. The story flows very well – but I’m going to warn potential readers that there’s a lot of phonetically written language – “oot” and “havnae” and “didnae”, etc., which I know some find irritating or hard to follow.

Rogue With a Brogue is, despite its ridiculously cutesy title, an enjoyable book. It’s refreshing to find a romance in which the protagonists don’t try to deny or hide their attraction and in which they keep faith with each other, even when the situation seems desperate. There’s a strong emotional connection between Mary and Arran which grows and deepens throughout the story, and their hard-won HEA is richly deserved.

First impression:

Hmm. Never read so many oots and aboots in my life...

Review originally posted HERE:

This title makes me shudder with embarrassment. Generally a lot of research and effort goes into the creation of historical romance, and the titles (and covers!) just cheapen the whole experience.

I did enjoy many things about this book, and am glad I had the opportunity to read a review copy, as I can’t see myself being attracted to this book’s packaging in a shop.

One thing is for certain, however: this rogue sure does have a brogue! If you don’t like Scottish accents written phonetically, this book might just send you to the loony bin. Sentences like these are commonplace from start to finish, and after a while they were making me irrationally angry:

“What are ye talking aboot, lass?”

“It matches yer eyes and brings oot the red in yer hair.”

I hate accents being written out phonetically. Everyone has an accent, and there is no one “correct” accent. We know the guy is Scottish, but there’s no more need to write his speech that way than there is for an American or a Kiwi or anybody from anywhere.

I do like the way this author constructs scenes and I like her characters. She’s obviously very good at what she does, and she makes her scenes a lot of fun. Even when treading extremely common ground (Regency balls, for example), she holds your interest. I’ve never read anything by her before (craziness, I know!), and now I’m wondering why I waited.

HOWEVER…

I don’t think I’ll pursue any more of her books featuring Scottish characters. My sanity won’t stand for it.

This book was borderline ridiculous. So the H and h meet each other at a masquerade ball, they have somewhat of a spark, a moment.... then each of their families freak out due to their clans having a long-standing history of being enemies. The H and h go on to meet a few more times and they each develop a mutual liking for each other. But by page 122, the story's main focus did not even seem to be about our forbidden lovers, but instead it was just all about the conversations and grumblings of each side of their families, and the constant rehashing of why the hero and heroine should not be so much as being in the same room and speaking to each other. The rehashing of their family's feud and pending truce was so annoying. Instead of the ridiculous engagements that the H and h each had set up for them by their families (to people that they each disliked), they could have easily been paired up together by their families to ensure the truce remained, problem would have been solved. It was silly and I gave up on the story. Too much unnecessary angst.

This was a hard book for me to get through due to reading it during my dads passing. It wasn’t the books fault, I just found myself dragging my feet more than usual and it did make the book feel like it drug in places due to my slowness.

On the plus side, I am still very much enjoying this series and can’t wait for Lachlan’s story with Winnie. I liked book one better than this one, but nonetheless it was a fun read.

SERIES IMPORTANCE: Medium. I definitely recommend starting with book 1. Things are set up there that relate to Aaron in this book. Also, because the characters from the first book feature so prominently throughout the series, it’s certainly easier to know who’s who as you enter into book 2.

An absolutely wonderful historical romance, Rogue with a Brogue was a fantastic read. I loved this book! With its sweet romance, skillful suspense, and enjoyable story, it was a perfect read.

Mary was a wonderful heroine. She was strong and independently minded, refusing to let others rule her life. And, she was also a kind-hearted, genuinely likable character. I thought she was lovely.

Arran was amazing. He was so sweet and, when this man fell, he fell hard. Nothing could stop him from being with the woman he loved, not even a centuries old feud. He was clever, sweet, and I totally loved him.

The romance was jut lovely. Mary and Arran were so wonderful together. They were both very strong and willing to fight for what they wanted. I really appreciated that they didn't bother with denial. Instead, once they both recognized their feelings for each other, they were willing to do anything to hold on to each other. Not to mention the chemistry between them. I thought they were a perfect couple.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. Throughout the book, as Mary and Arran were on the run, the suspense and the constant worry that they would be caught kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the story and the ending was perfect.

Rogue with a Brogue was a brilliant historical romance. I absolutely loved this book! Everything about it was just lovely and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Romance lovers, this book is a must read.

This book definitely deserves. More than 5 stars!. This is the second book in this author's series. Suzanne Enoch is a very amazing author. I am thrilled with her work.

Arran MacLawry is the brother of the Laird of his clan and he also is his heir. Therefore, he must do his duty and marry for the good of his clan. He has difficulty comprehending how his Scottish Laird brother is engaged to an English Lady. Of all the Lassies out there he has to chose a Sassench. Too much is going on and he does not have the time or patience to he watching his brother's back, while he is in England. The enemy clan of the Campbell's are lurking around trying to act civilized . He must he alert because those horrible Campbell's are in England too.

While at a masquerade ball, Arran who is wearing the mask of a fox, wants to avoid his sister's match making of young debutants. He picks a vixen fox within his vicinity and dances with her. She immediately puts his blood to sizzle.

Mary Campbell is intrigued by the sly sexy fox who is dancing with her. There is so much more to this fox than it appears.

These two will have to overcome so much while their passion is blinding and alliances are tested. The love scenes are so passionate and descriptive. This book is not for the faint of heart.

Truly loved this fantastic book. I am now anxious to read about the sister and possibly Lachlan and eventually, Bear's story too.

Congratulations are in order to this author, for this book will definitely be a success.

I received this book as a gift.

This book easily could have used half the words and still told the exact same story. The entire plot revolved around a centuries old feud and rivalry between clan MacLawry and clan Campbell - and the Romeo and Juliette-esque love story that nearly initiated a clan war of epic proportions.

The whole thing is absurdly predictable, so I apologize if there are spoilers ahead, but honestly, there were zero surprises in this book. In a nutshell: forbidden boy meets and falls for equally forbidden girl. When their families discover them kissing, people go a little ape shit. Boy's family ships him back to Scotland to await his docile bride-to-be (chosen by boy's family). Girl quickly becomes betrothed to her oily and conniving first cousin (gratis her not so benevolent father). Boy rescues girl, and flees to Scotland. Both families give chase and all hell breaks loose.

Of course, everyone converges at Gretna Green for a stare-down contest, until ultimate peace is made between clans.

The end.

I enjoyed this book and love the author Suzanne Enoch's writing. She is a great author! This is the second book in the "Scandalous Highlander Series" series. But it can be a stand alone book if you choose to read it that way. I loved how the heroine, Mary Campbell and the hero, Arran MacLawry came together. They had a lot to over come not just their feelings! I would highly recommend this book and this author!

Dany - per RFS
.

Cosa aspettate a leggerlo?

(Sep) 4.5* I loved this book! I read the first one in the series and liked it well enough, so I began this one thinking it would be another nice but ultimately forgettable English/Scottish historical romance, but was happily surprised to discover it was much more.

Arran has come down from the Highlands to see what is going on with his older brother Ranulf. Ran had come down to London after his sister Rowena. While there, he fell in love with an English woman, Charlotte. Knowing his brother's hatred for all things English, Arran was worried enough to leave his beloved Highlands and see what was what. What he discovers is that Ran is in love and planning on marrying Charlotte, and worse, he's making friends with the English! While at a dance, and wearing a fox mask, Arran meets a (masked) lady fox who he asks to dance. It is only later he discovers the vixen was none other than Mary Campbell, granddaughter of The Campbell, Laird of the Campbells, their most hated foes. However, he is intrigued enough to find Mary the next day while she is out shopping. They flirt and there is a powerful draw between them. He convinces her to meet him for lunch the next day. Mary, intrigued and excited by the deception (she is forced to lie to her family about where she is), comes to the lunch w/her maid and spends the day talking with and enjoying the company of the one man in London she should have nothing to do with. The MacLawrys and the Campbells have agreed to a truce, but both sides are planning on bolstering their clans by forming allegiances with other clans. The plan is to have both Mary and Arran marry people from other clans who will strengthen their positions, just in case. The more Arran and Mary sneak around to see one another, the more kisses they share, the harder it is for them to imagine being apart. Finally, they are caught and Arran, after a big fight with Ran, is sent away home; Mary's father plans to haver her marry her slimy cousin since the original man she was to marry will no longer have her. Arran finds Mary and convinces her to run away with him, taking her maid with them, along with Peter, his guard, and Howard Howard, a London hack driver.

Believe it or not, all of this happens in the first 40% or so of the book. The rest is a road trip of sorts, with danger lurking around every corner, some very nice bedroom scenes, and while I knew it would have a happy ending, I was still on the edge of my seat wondering how and if and when it would all come to be. Mary was a wonderful heroine - she was strong, lively, lovely - I can't remember the last time I encountered a heroine I enjoyed as much. Arran, is a smart, sexy, Highlander - he's not a jerk, he is honest about his feelings and I believed in his love for Mary from the start. I liked Ran well enough in his own book but here I thought he was kind of an insensitive hypocrite, until the end when he wasn't. While there was honestly nothing that special or different about this book compared to so many others, I just loved the characters and the dialogue and the whole story line - just better than so many others I've read. While I've read a lot of "Cinderella" type books and more "Beauty and the Beast" storylines than I can count, I honestly am not sure I've read any "Romeo and Juliet" plots, which this was. Son and daughter of warring clans, they fall in love and all they want is to be left in peace to love one another and live happily together in the Highlands, and to have the fighting between the clans stop for good.

The only thing that stopped me from giving this a 5* rating was the ending, which I found a bit too abrupt. I felt another chapter was needed - I wanted to see The Campbell reunite with his banished daughter Sarah, I would have liked more interaction between Arran and his brothers, I want to know what happened to Charles. Hopefully we'll get to see more of these two and their families (and maybe even Peter and Howard Howard - loved them both) in the other two books in the series. Looking forward to Bear's book, not sure about Rowena's, but I'll give it a shot!

Wow....that was so fun! Both Aaron and Mary are from warring clans. Their families have decided to hedge their bets on a weak truce falling apart so they are trying to force the couple to marry to other people. When compromised, Mary and Aaron flee to Gretna Green.

Their clans took away any choice they had by demanding they marry for advantage rather than love. Though neither wanted clan warfare, the idea of marrying a cruel man and a 'dumb as a hammer' female had little appeal. It seems like a Romeo/ Juliet story and it kinda was, but so much better. Each really understood the risk they were taking, neither entering this relationship lightly. This wasn't impulsive as much as it was two people who wanted the chance at trying for love. These wasn't an angsty tryst, but two people who wanted a choice.

Loved it! Enoch is superb! I liked her first book, but I loved this one...

REALLY A 3.5 RATING FOR ME

I fell in love with the MacLawry family in the first book in this series, The Devil Wears Kilts.
It was a fun story and Ms Enoch introduced me to wonderful characters who had adventures.

I knew that I would love this book as well. I bought all 4 books in the series and this is the second one.

I liked Arran. He is a brave man who was a soldier, and now he is the heir to his elder brother. He is a good negotiator as well as someone who helps manage and enact all the plans his brother has for the people who are part of their clan.

Unfortunately, his brother has basically promised Arran to the daughter of another clan. It is all to make the MacLawrys stronger and construct a peace. But, when Arran speaks to the girl, he is shocked. He believes that it is similar to speaking to an inanimate object.

And, he also has had his attention drawn to another young lady. She is Mary Campbell and the Campbells have a tentative agreement with the MacLawrys. But, there is no close connection between the two clans.

Mary has been promised to a man from another clan. But, her father’s second choice is a cousin who is cruel, dishonest and generally pond scum. Mary does not want to be wed to that man. She does not even want to be in the same place as that man.

If one looks at this carefully, it is evident that people were basically used as pawns. Personal preference as well as common sense did not seem to ever become part of the process.

The plot moves along well in the first 1/3 of the book and the last 1/3 of the book. The middle seemed to me to move at a snails pace with many pages of repetitive descriptions.

I am a fan of Ms Enoch, but this to me was not her best effort.

I liked Arran. He was a man who listened to Mary as well as his young sister. He did not automatically treat women as though they had no intelligence. In fact, he wanted a woman who was smart and funny and courageous. That is Mary.

Mary was treated like a piece of meat by her father. He was incapable of listening to her. He had no consideration for her. He also did not consider that she had a mind.

But, Mary and Arran found one another to be interesting, charming, funny and smart. It was inevitable that the two of them would be drawn to one another.

This is a well done story with terrific characters. The secondary characters are well developed and add a texture to the story. Not everyone is heroic, but everyone is interesting.

I just felt that for me the story bogged down in the middle.

I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

I do not read a lot of historicals so take this review for what it's worth. I listened to this on overdrive and I do think the narrator did a good job.

The first half was a total snooze fest. It all took place in London. The formality, pomp and circumstance drove me nuts! On and on about balls and bonnets and top hats and other shit I could not care less about. Plus the hero and heroine really had no clue what they meant to each other and were each promised to others (who they did not really know).

I kept going because I read reviews that it picked up is the second hall. The second half was better. Actually a lot better. Once the heroine committed I was proud at how she did. She stuck to it, no matter how hard it was to do so. The hero was heroic. He put everything on the line for her and while he wanted her, he did not require she give herself to him. There was some humor and some drama, but they stayed together no matter what.

I would definately read another book by this author if it did not take place in London!

Rogue with a Brogue is book two in The Scandalous Highlanders series by Suzanne Enoch. Wow! This series just gets better and better. I really enjoyed this book. There were a few moments when the pace slowed a bit, but overall, I couldn’t put it down. I loved Arran MacLawry. He is the wonderful swoon-worthy Highland hero that we romance junkies crave. “A predator waiting for his prey. Black hair lifted off his temple in the light breeze. With the fox ask on, his parts - jaw, mouth, shadowed blue eyes - had hinted at a handsome face. Without the mask, adding in high cheekbones, a straight nose, and slightly arched eyebrows, he was a dream - a dark Highlands prince who likely ate wildcats for breakfast.” This is a bit of a Romeo and Juliet story without the tragedy of course. Mary Campbell is a great heroine. She has intelligence and beauty. I checked this book out from the library. I can’t wait to read more.

This stunning romance has it all: a sizzling relationship, clan family drama, suspense, danger, and even a road trip adventure. This is the second book in Suzanne Enoch’s Scandalous Highlanders series—the first was The Devil Wears Kilts—but it can be read on its own.

Arran MacLawry and Mary Campbell’s clans have been feuding for hundreds of years and, despite a tentative truce, tensions still run high. It’s the Regency era and times are changing, with Arran’s older brother and clan chief, Ranulf, engaged to an English lady and with the Campbell family now mostly living in England.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I just loved this!!! It is a tale of a Romeo and Juliet romance but set in the highlands. I could not put this one down. I definitely will be reading more from this author.

Second time through and I really enjoyed it. I won the fourth book in the series in a giveaway and I wanted to familarize myself in the fun world that the author created. I am looking forward to more!

Good lord, this book was very hard to get through. I gave it two stars because the writing was fine, but the story was just really strung out! It also really bothers me when authors don’t understand basic biology. Weren’t they on the road for around a week? How could she possibly know she was pregnant?

I read this with my book club. Some people loved it, but we aren’t reading the next book in the series.

I loved this book! The hero and heroine are both awesome with the Romeo and Juliet style storyline. I also really loved Howard and Peter. Their adventure trying to get to the highlands was epic and I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. Arran was just so sweet and loveable but also tough and heroic, my favorite kind of hero. I'm off to read the next book in the series right now!!!
