When Grampa and Wiley sneak out of the house on a stormy Halloween night to attend Colonel Dracula's Monster Truck Spectacular, they run into trouble from which only Gramma and an F5 tornado can save them.
"Wiley," said Grampa, "if we wanna make it to the truck show in time, we're gonna have to cut through those woods."
"You mean those dark, scary, wild animal-infested woods?" I asked nervously.
"Why, that's the best kind, my boy!" _____
Inside, the place was a madhouse, stuffed to the brim with freaky people.
"Grampa," I said, "all these fans look pretty weird."
"It's Halloween, Wiley!" said Grampa. "Everyone's wearing costumes . . . or just really ugly." _____
Vlad, the Impala! _____
"Don't worry, Wiley," replied Grampa. "There's gotta be a reasonable explanation for the power outage. Could be the storm, maybe Drac didn't pay his electric bill, or maybe a thousand angry rats have gnawed through the wiring and are heading toward us right now. It could be anything." _____
While Grampa drooled all over Drac's truck, I decided to do what all smart kids do in scary stories--go exploring by myself in the dark. _____
"Well, Wiley, we made our beds and now we have to lie in 'em," said Grampa. "It's either the monster truck barreling toward us or the fiery anger of your Gramma. I'm seriously considering sticking with the truck."
An amazing begging to one of the greatest fictional sagas in history, a perfect combination of humor, crudeness, horror, and relatability and an all around roller coaster ride of fantastic moments and beyond amazing illustrations that perfectly capture emotion and scenery in a scene of cartoon realism which only adds to the amazing effect of the emotional writing, 10 out of 10 would read again along a firm recommendation.
Funny with a capital F, as well as a capital U, Nx2, and Y. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this series, I think this book was awesome with a capital everything.
During a stormy Halloween night, overcoming a F5 Tornado and an angry Gramma, Wiley and his Grampa take a break from their monster movie marathon to go to the Monster Truck Spectacular, a monster truck show put on by Colonel Dracula. Once there they are invited by Dracula to visit his backstage lair where thrills and chills await them. Kirk Scroggs includes the proper mix of monster and humor in both story and art. While kids may not get all the jokes and references, the adults sure will, which makes this a great book for parents to read aloud with their children. Visually appealing, with a wild ride of a story, this a great hook book for reluctant readers, although it should be noted that some of the vocabulary is more advanced than the illustrations and font size suggest. At 102 pages, Dracula vs. Grampa at the Monster Truck Spectacular is a perfect choice for that last minute book report. This is the first in a series titled "Wiley and Grampa's Creature Features" and is followed by Grampa's Zombie BBQ. Fans of Dav Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" books should also enjoy this series. Recommended to both school and public libraries. Contains: A chase scene, implications of a potential fight that doesn't materialze.
If you're a horror fan and you have children--or just need a good laugh--read this and the other books in the Wiley & Grampa series over and over again. They're wonderful. They're funny. And I get the distinct impression Kirk Scroggs really loves these characters and this world (and monster movies!). I can't say enough good things about these books. The text is broken up with many funny and well-executed illustrations, making it great for kids in first grade and up who are honing their reading skills, and the stories are funny enough that they're a good bet for reluctant readers.
To Little Brown, I say; "Why are these books out of print??"
Scroggs writing is totally my style. I loved the over-the-top story and characters, and enjoyed reading this book out loud. With lots of pictures to compliment the text, it is a very quick read with lots of funny puns and jokes. It's nice to read a funny children's book that is witty rather than relying on potty humor.
The "Wiley and Grampa" series was recommended over and over to me by a third grade boy and i could TOTALLY see why. Fans of Captain Underpants will enjoy these short (sometimes gross) chapter books.
Great read alike for the Captain Underpants/ Lenny and Mel/ or any good funny boy beginning chapter book. Funny pictures great story and a cover that really does not need me to help sell it to any audience. Grades 2+
I looooooooooooove this book! It is soooooooo cool. If I could well, that is, if you could give them whatever stars you want, how many numbers there are, how much you can think of, I here would give that book 99 thousand and 99 thousand and 99 thousand infinity.
Short, but very very funny. I have finally found a book series that might be able to run against the Junie B. Jones books. Oh, these books would still lose to Junie, but at least they'd try to compete.
