Rizzoli & Isles #10

El último en morir

Rate this book

This is book 10 in the Rizzoli series and I recommend that you read them in order. You should also be prepared for differences between the books and the tv series. My wife and I like both. Most of Gerritsen's books tend to be a bit creepy, but this one is super creepy. A murder takes place in Boston's Beacon Hill, a very rich, exclusive neighborhood. Two adults and their 3 children are murdered. The only survivor is their foster child, Teddy Clock. Teddy's parents were murdered in the US Virgin Islands. Their yacht blew up and Teddy survived.
Jane Rizzoli, Boston PD homicide, is called to the scene. When she starts investigating, she finds other murders with a chilling resemblance. Two parents murdered, a child survives, then the adoptive parents are murdered and the same child survives. But the other murders are outside of Boston and her boss considers the case closed when their chief suspect dies trying to escape the police. Jane does solve the case, with help from Dr. Maura Isles, Boston M.E., and her partner, Detective Frost.
I liked the way the tension builds throughout the plot, gradually exposing who the killer was.
I also liked the side subplots, Jane's family issues and Maura's continuing hostility from the Boston PD(explained in book 9). There is also Maura's relationship with a teenager who saved her life in book 8.
All of it made up a very satisfying read with an ending that tied up all the threads. I read this library book in 3 days.

I'll be narrating this title. I've narrated two of the Rizzoli & Isles series and I can't tell you how much I LOVE this series and the characters. So excited to see what happens next.

Claire Ward, Will Yablonski and Teddy Clock all have something in common. The three teens share a traumatic past where they not only survived attacks on their families but on the families who subsequently took them in after the deaths of their parents. Now, they’re all at Evensong, the school located in a remote area in Maine that is associated with Anthony Sansone. Jane Rizzoli is investigating the most recent attack perpetrated against Teddy’s foster family and she’s responsible for placing him at Evensong. Coincidentally, Maura is at the school visiting Julian, the boy who saved her in Wyoming. Jane and Maura team up to investigate the coincidence they don’t believe is just that.

This was the most difficult mystery to solve to date. Finding a connection between these teens and their families, if any, was elusive. I finally decided I’d just go with the flow of a good story and follow it wherever it lead. It was highly interesting, especially as we got the points of view of so many of the characters. And, another new narrator who nails Jane Rizzoli and paces the story adeptly. But, I wasn’t a fan of her male voices, which were over exaggerated to the point of being annoying. Overall, though, it was a strong performance.

While not my most favorite in the series, this was one of the more compelling. There’s a lot going on, beginning with the initial investigation in Boston involving Teddy Clock. There’s a big twist at the end that I never saw coming. And, I’m not quite sure how to interpret the ending. Stay tuned.

Gerritsen nails it again with another tautly written Rizzoli and Isles installment.

A multi-layered book with a lot of changes in narration, but for me that just ratcheted up the tension. A total
page turner!!

In addition to our two super cool heroines, there were some great featured characters and shadowy figures who relentlessly pursued our youthful victims.

Shades of Stephen King (maybe because of the unique boarding school or Gerritsen’s strong voices for her young teen characters) but in a good way. A very original premise which pays off in the end.

And just enough of Sansone to wonder what may be next for he and Isles!!

Such a great read— my favorite so far (but I think I may have said that about the last few books). 😎

A great story. Three children’s parents have been murdered and then their foster parents are then killed. The children are sent to Evensong a private school in an isolated area of Maine. It is run by Anthony Sansome a friend of Maura’s.

Who is hunting the children? Why? The ending is good with a good twist.

Its interesting how different the stories on the tv show and also the characters in minor ways.

For fourteen-year-old Teddy Clock, death has struck twice. When he was twelve, his family was murdered; Teddy somehow survived but does not remember anything about the incident. Now, two years later, when his foster family is slaughtered, Boston detective Jane Rizzoli takes him under her wing. Not without reservation, she whisks him off to a boarding school called Evensong, a remote castle-like structure where he will be safe. With two near misses, will there be a third attempt? Will Teddy Clock be The Last to Die ?

Rizzoli’s friend, Dr. Maura Isles, Boston’s chief forensic pathologist, happens to be at Evensong visiting her friend Julian. Julian is a sixteen-year-old boy whom she met in Montana. The two have become friends – almost family – since Julian saved Maura’s life. For those who are familiar with the series, the Mephisto Club and Anthony Sansone are responsible for the running of the school. Maura and Jane have both been suspicious of these hunters of evildoers in the past; will they trust them now to protect Teddy and give Julian what he needs as well?

At times the plot seems too far-out to be believed. Two other young students are also two-time victims of traumatic deaths to their loved ones. Jane thinks that this may not be a coincidence and that the kids’ lives are in danger. As Rizzoli and Frost backtrack on the investigations into the deaths of Will Yblonski and Claire Ward’s families, they struggle to find a link. Why would someone be trying to wipe out three kids? But that seems to be what is happening. Will Evensong be the sanctuary they need? Or will Claire and Will also be the last of their families to die?

In going over the same work as the previous investigators, Rizzoli and Frost come across some strange theories that had me scratching my head. I should mention that every so often, we get an anonymous short chapter that details a past clandestine operation somewhere that in no way seems to fit these current theories. No worries. This is Tess Gerritsen, and she has a plan, albeit a strange one. I have to admit that it was a pretty brilliant twist, even if it does require suspending belief.

I liked most of the kids and the continuing development of the principal characters, although I’d have liked to have seen some of Jane’s husband Gabriel, who is absent in this one. But we do get Bear, Julian’s dog! That’s a plus! We also get the added continuing drama of Jane’s mother and father and their marital woes. Stay tuned!

Overall, Last to Die was quite entertaining and nearly impossible to put down. There was no way I was going to figure this one out, and that’s perfectly fine with me.

3.5 rounded to 4 stars

One of my favorite of the series. I liked the new characters in this plot and Rizzoli and Isles were in top form...it was a difficult book to put down.

Of course, part of my enjoyment was that Detective Darren Crowe had to eat crow. A little comeuppance for certain characters is always nice to see.

This is book 10 in the Rizzoli and Isles book series and while I’ve only read a couple I was able to follow things well. I will say there are some big differences between the show and the books but I like them both in their own ways. I think this book took the plot to somewhere a little out there but it was a fun book regardless. I will say I hated Jane’s family subplot in this and am so glad the show tweaked things just enough to still like everyone. I hope the next one involves Jane’s mother getting married (or skips the family subplot). Detective Rizzoli gets called to a homicide with a young boy,
Teddy, the only survivor. The really tragic part is this the second time his entire family (this time foster family) was killed and he alone survived. Meanwhile Dr. Isles is taking some time off to spend with a young boy who went through horrors with her at his remote school when Dr. Isles meets two children with stories just like Teddy’s of twice escaping death. While no one else seems to see connections, Jane doesn’t believe in coincidences.

Last to Die is another excellent entry in the Rizzoli & Isles series. Tess Gerritsen doesn't disappoint! She will keep the reader turning the pages trying to figure out, along with Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles, what is happening and then at the end throws a curve ball that leaves the reader surprised.

Jane is called to horrific murder scene in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood. Two adults and three children have been murdered. The only survivor is fourteen year-old foster child Teddy Clock who fled the scene and ran to a neighbor. Jane's maternal instincts kick in and she bonds with the young boy. Medical examiner Maura Isles is also at the scene. She is still feeling the hostility from the Boston PD after her testimony helped send a police officer to prison and her friendship with Jane has been strained too. She is about to head to Maine to visit Julian Perkins at Evensong, the exclusive boarding school. Julian helped save Maura in Wyoming and the two have become close. Almost family.

Jane makes arrangements to have Teddy placed with another family and continues to bond with him to try and get him to open up and tell her what happened to his foster family. She learns that Teddy has had a lot of tragedy in his young life. Two years ago his parents and sisters were killed in the U.S. Virgin Islands when their yacht blew up. First his family is killed, now his foster family is murdered.

At Evensong Maura meets two other students, Claire Ward and Will Yablonski, who share a similar story. Their families were murdered, they survived and were placed with a foster family, and their foster family was killed too. Again they were the only survivors. Too much of a coincidence for there not to be a connection. Maura calls Jane to let her know what she has learned. Jane decides that Teddy is not safe in Boston and decides to take him to Evensong. It is a secure location and contained. Claire, Will, and Teddy will all be together where they can keep an eye on them.

Jane and her partner, Detective Barry Frost, investigate the deaths of the Ward, Yablonski, and Clock families trying to find a connection. There is nothing apparent. They didn't even take place in the same country. But as Rizzoli and Frost investigate they learn there is a predator out there and that even at Evensong the children are not safe.

There are short chapters interspersed throughout the story that seem to reference a clandestine operation that took place in the past and which turned out badly. What is the connection to Teddy, Claire, and Will? Why were their families killed? Tess Gerritsen will tie everything together at the end and in a way that left me surprised and delighted. The author left me eagerly anticipating the next story in the series.

Why would someone kill the families of three different children then slaughter the families that adopted them? That’s the basic premise of Last To Die and it’s a good one. Unfortunately, Gerritsen doesn’t deliver what could have been a great book.

On the plus side, she didn’t give us another serial killer novel – something she’s overly fond of. On the minus side, too much of the story was told from outside the main characters’ point of view. Ahem, Ms. Gerritsen, this is a Rizzoli & Isles book; they should be the ones to carry the story, not others. Four chapters from the bad guy’s point of view thrown in randomly seem more like asides rather than something related to the main story. Add a mysterious rescuer, a rogue CIA agent, tension-building moments that fall flat, and characters who popped up only to fulfill a specific role that did nothing to advance the story, and you have a cliché-ridden lame effort.

Gerritsen also left several loose threads hanging at the end, giving this book a rushed, incomplete feel. Is she planning to carry them over or tie them off in the next book? Or was she pressured by her publisher to crank this book out to tie in with the Rizzoli & Isles TV series? Either way, this is a half-hearted book.

I gave this book 2 stars because I can’t give it 1½. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t quite good enough to merit even an ok rating.

If this is your first exposure to this series, you will be disappointed.

Posebno me udavio ljubavni trougao Džejnine majke, bukv ničim izazvan. Baš me briga za nju i njene "udvarače" i koga će odabrati.

Not grejt not teribl.

🔪
Kafamda her zamanki sorularla "Sonda ne olacak? Katil kim?

Maura i Jane wciąż pozostają w mojej topce, naprawdę inspirujące postacie. +100 za świetne zakończenie, tęskniłam za tą serią

Tess Gerritsen's 10th Rizzoli & Isles thriller is (as always) full of great characters & nice plot twists. There are plenty of characters from her previous books in Last to Die, so this won't really work as a stand alone novel.
The setting, of an isolated school, is nicely atmoshperic & although not as good as some of the other Rizolli & Isles books it's enjoyable enough.

Simply delicious to the last drop! Tess Gerritsen always delivers a great read, but Last to Die is an especially tasty treat. Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles are at their best in this blood chilling tale about three teens who have each survived two massacres involving their families and their foster families. Leave it to Jane and Maura to discover that the latest multiple homicide in Boston leaving 14-year-old Teddy Clock as the sole survivor is far from an unlucky home invasion. Teddy along with two other teens are being targeted, but there doesn't seem to be a connection to the three families. The teens end up at Evensong boarding school, which caters to traumatized teens, and promises to be a safe haven for them with its location in the Maine wilderness and carefully selected staff. But, evil can be a relentless adversary, and it soon is apparent that even a well fortified sanctuary can be penetrated. Gerritsen gives readers some tantalizing twists in a plot that is masterfully concocted. I couldn't stop reading, even though I knew that it meant the book would end more quickly, and one never wants a great read to end.

Last to Die definitely stands out as one of my favourite novels written by Tess Gerritsen along with Die Again and Playing with Fire. After finishing The Silent Girl, I actually intended to read either Finding Audrey or Three Dark Crowns, but I was cautious and eventually I opted once again for a novel belonging to my favourite genre. About 4 years ago I read Body Double, my first encounter with the Rizzoli & Isles book and ever since I've been coming back to this series eager and full of great expectations. Tess Gerritsen has proved that she has the capability of constructing each installment in this series differently regarding the plot, the points of view, the setting and this is the reason why I've never got bored. I also enjoy the fact that apart from the main characters, there are others as well who feature in more than one novel, such as Anthony Sansone, Lily Saul, Julian Perkins, and I think that this gives continuity to the series.

Last to Die is about three children whose families were murdered during the same week a couple years ago and subsequently each one's foster family was murdered as well. Following these tragic events, the three teenagers became students of Evensong, a remote boarding school in Maine destined for children who lost their families tragically and needed help to deal with their childhood traumas. Evensong is a very mysterious school and the teaching methods differ considerably from the common ones. Evensong is meant to offer protection to these children, but a series of unsettling events occurring in the school indicates that the criminals are aware of the children's whereabouts and that the attack is imminent. Detective Jane Rizzoli is convinced that the deaths of the three children's families are connected but she struggles to find a plausible connection between them.

Needless to say, the story was frightening and addictive at the same time. It was told from multiple points of view and the numerous twists maintained the suspense. In contrast with other installments in the Rizzoli & Isles series, in Last to Die both Jane and Maura had an almost equally important role and the novel also laid emphasis on the friendship between them. Right now I'm feeling sad because I read all of the novels in the Rizzoli & Isles series which have been released so far. I'm impatient to read the 12th installment which is set to be published in August.

Ako volite ovaj serijal, keep up the good work. This is the way.

Man laaabai patinka Tess knygos.

Sutapimas? Smarkiai abejoju.
Berniukas, kuris vėl liko be savo šeimos yra pavedamas Džeinės Ricoli priežiūrai.

Man labai patiko! Dar kartą galiu drąsiai teigti, jog man Tess - detektyvų karalienė.
