Absolutely brilliant.
I'm one of the readers who adore Bob Hoon. I loved his character in the DCI Logan books and I have been waiting very impatiently for Northwind to arrive. I think it was a big gamble giving the foul mouthed fellow his own book but my goodness it has paid off. This was an absolute belter of a story. My heart rate has only just returned to normal. Yes, the language was a bit fruity in places, but this is Hoon we are talking about. I'd think we would worry if he uttered a sentence without a swear word in it! The story was riveting and I feared for Bob a few times. Yet again, as with all this authors books, I read Northwind in one sitting. I do try to stop to make them last but it's impossible as you get so caught up in the writing it's hard to leave. If you haven't read any of JD Kirks books, please do, you really are missing out. Now I have to wait until February to get the next instalment, it's going to be a long winter! Bravo again JD.

Reread August 2023: still bloody brilliant.
Initially I started reading Kirk with this novel. I’ve since read the entire DCI Logan series and decided I needed to circle back to Hoon now that I have the full back story. What a brilliant spin-off series. So much so I’m rereading the rest of the Hoon escapades.

I now have every J.D Kirk novel on my TBR (which has increased the list dramatically, but I couldn't think of a better author/series to want to read).
So, yes, my first foray with Kirk, and I am still laughing despite the brutal and gruesome nature of the plot. I love Bob Hoon. The foul-mouthed character (yes, the language is salty throughout - be warned) is what makes the book so brilliant. I'd worry if there wasn't a sentence without a swear word or metaphor because the snarky, black-humoured figurative language makes this read unique. The story was riveting, unpredictable, full of red herrings, and I absolutely did not want it to end.
Now onto all the JD Kirks books!

Firstly I just want to say this is the book that we needed but didn’t know we needed!!! Robert Hoon is a foul mouthed lout and his super power is offending literally everyone he comes in contact with while simultaneously being hilarious.
If you don’t like swearing one of two things need to happen for you to read this book, you either need to let that go and move on from not liking swearing or… don’t read it. The swearing is right the way through and it’s hilarious and fits perfectly with the character.
There is a guest appearance from DCI Jack Logan which is expected but nicely done. We finally get some back story to the brash, crude and rough character that is Hoon and find out that he really isn’t all that bad, mostly. It is also reiterated that he’s as mad as a cut snake and a hard bastard to kill!!!
No spoilers from me, just read it. I laughed out loud so many times and the story kept me up reading into the night. Thanks again J.D Kirk for another cracking story can’t wait for the next instalment.

The second step is to catch yourself in constant chuckle. A well-deserved dose of Scottish black humor!
The third step - you start to feel sympathy for a strange citizen, rude, rough, struggling with his inner demons, an elderly man, 🖋️with short hair, and a muzzle like a bulldog licking the nettles, and whose methods are not such, 🖋️that would be justified by the damned Geneva Convention.
The fourth step- taste with plasure the lonely north wind fight against the system, by any means.
Fifth step - wait for the second part!

Labai greitai susiskaitė, visai šaunus detektyvas,pirma knyga iš serijos. Yra žiaurokų muštynių scenų, jas švelnina pagrindinio veikėjo sąmojai ir humoras, kurio nepraranda net pačiu beviltiškiausiu atveju. Ypač pirmoj pusėj tai balsu kvatojau. O šiaip tai iš lengvesnių, sakyčiau, nėra daug tamsos ir siaubo, o daug veiksmo ir santykių aiškinimosi kumščiais.

"Šiaurės vėjas" arba tai, kas gautųsi, jei į krūvą sudėtumėm Quentin Tarantino filmus, cisterną alkoholio, stipriai nurautą ex policininką, vežimą beprotybės ir tada viską padegtumėm.
Robertas Hunas - buvęs Škotijos policijos vyriausiasis inspektorius, kasdienybę laistantis viskiu ir šiuo metu ieškantis dingusios draugo dukters. Alkoholikas, tarsi Don Kichotas stojantis prieš vėjo malūnus, tačiau dėl tiesos, galintis virsti baisiausiu priešų košmaru.
Tikėjausi dar vienos eilinės detektyvų serijos, gavau... sprogimą, pavarde Hunas. Juodas humoras, taisyklių nebuvimas ir įtampa, kuri neleidžia atsipalaiduoti, visą šią seriją lengvai paverčia išskirtine.
Tikiu, kad bijantiems nenorminės leksikos, knyga jau po pirmų 50psl. sukels nervinį tiką. Dorovingos tetos, skaitydamos tikrai kalbės rožinį ir užvertę paskutinį puslapį, plaus akis šventintu vandeniu. Bet man buvo smagu ir aš, mėgstanti beprotybę, tikrai skaitysiu seriją toliau.

mušuosi ir gaudau
Ne visai mano skonio trileris - labai daug muštynių ir panašaus pobūdžio veiksmo ir labai mažai detektyvinių elementų, tyrimo ir paslapties. Plot twistų irgi nors vežimu vežk, nors visi klišiniai. Bet negaliu sakyti, kad knyga prasta. Ji bent jau neapsimetinėja tuo kuo nėra, nuo pat pradžios aiškiai pasakoma, kad į pagrindinį veikėją kreipiamasi ne dėl to, kad jis ką tirtų, o kad atsakymus išmuštų ir jis būtent tai ir daro.
Siužetas nors vietomis klišinis ir nuspėjamas, man patiko savo paprastumu, knyga palyginti neilga, todėl visos tos muštynės labai neprailgo. Veiksmo scenos kaip trileriui - puikios, bet aš nelabai mėgstu jas skaityti, man atrodo labiau tiktų šita fabula veiksmo filmui.
Pagrindinis veikėjas toks šiek tiek Hario Hūlės, nes kaipgi be jo, ir nemažai John Wick. Vyrukas praktiškai nemirtingas, kimba į atlapus reikia to ar nereikia, provokuoja visus ir visada, net būdamas vienas prieš šešis. Elgiasi kvailai, neva nesusilaikydamas iš įniršio, bet tai daro taip dažnai ir taip lygioj vietoje, kad praranda visą efektą. Apskritai kažkaip pastaruoju metu atrodo, kad škotų detektyvų rašytojai mėgsta kurti tiesiog ‘mušuosi ir gaudau’ siužetus ir su jais turbūt viskas gerai, tik man ne visai pakeliui.

Very good with few dull moments.

Labai puikus trileris, nuo kurio sunkiai buvo įmanoma atsiplėšti, tiesiog prarytas per kelis gerus prisėdimus.
Buvęs karys, buvęs policininkas, o dabar žmogus ant bedugnės krašto, atstumtas senų kolegų, buvęs policijos vyriausias inspektorius Robertas Hunas priverstas griebtis atsitiktinių darbų ir kartais gal per daug išgeria viskio. Vieną vakarą jis sulaukia seno bičiulio pagalbos šauksmo, nes dingusi jo dukra, ir tik Hunas jam gali padėti, nes yra jam skolingas. Hunas pradeda ieškoti dingusios merginos, susiduria su klastingais priešais ir pats tampa pavojingu priešininku,bet jis vis dar puikiai atskiria balta ir juoda, ir vis dar tiki teisingumu.
Jis iškalbingas, žodžių kišenėje neieškantis(vien jo išsireiškimai privers netekti amo ir galbūt nusišypsoti) tikslingai sieks savo užsibrėžto tikslo ir išaiškėjusi tiesa bus pribloškianti, tik dėl dingusios merginos liks klaustukų ir turi būti tęsinys neabejotinai.
Autorius bus įtrauktas į mėgstamų sąrašą ir labai lauksiu jo kitų knygų.

Enjoyed this book with Hoon as the main character. Hoon is am acquired taste. But also a delicacy once you get used to him.

I also found myself highlight his colorful insults.

An excellent easy to read story with enough swear words to fill a jumbo-sized swear jar as ex-copper Robert Hoon, Boggle to his friends (of which there are few), breaks open a very nasty criminal organisation...
While a serious topic, I laughed out loud more times than I could count at Hoon's specific take on the events and people he encountered.
Looking forward to the next book in this series.

Man čia toks 'Die hard' at koks kito 'bajavyko' knyginis analogas. Užkietėjęs vyrukas, kuris gali patiesti 3 vyrus dviem smūgiais, nors turi sulaužytus šonkaulius ir mato 1 akim. Ir aišku išspręsti bylą, sudėti taškus ant i.
Tai jeigu tokių filmų nemėgstat tai ir nerekomenduoju.
Man patiko, juodas humoras, autorius rašo lengvai ir neapkrauna galvos nereikalinga informacija 😊👍
'Šimtas tūkstančių? Už šitą sušiktą kaliošą? Gal jis koks skraidantis ar ką?... Tikiuosi, kad jame buvo A klasės narkotikų, kitaip, bijau, kad tave išdūrė' 😀

Leidykla Jotema skaitytojams pateikė naują detektyvinę seriją, kuri tikrai išskirtinė. Pagrindinį išskirtinumą sukūrė pagrindinis veikėjas. Jį galima mėgti, juo žavėtis, nekęsti, bet abejingų nepaliks, Robertą Huną prisiminti teks.
Robertas (Bobas) Hunas buvęs kariškis, buvęs Škotijos policijos inspektorius, o dabar tiesiog nusigyvenęs žmogus dirbantis atsitiktinius darbus. Kai senas draugas paprašo pagalbos surasti dukrą, vyras supranta, kokioj beviltiškoj situacijoje atsidūrė draugas. Jis pats blogiausias variantas tokiam darbui. Tačiau kai viskas padaryta, galbūt Hunas kumšiais ir jėga suras dingusią merginą greičiau, nei policija, kurią įpareigoja įstatymai.
Bobas sutikęs padėti, net neįsivaizdavo kur veliasi. Tai ne šiaip dingimo byla, tai labai paslaptingas tinklas, kuris gali įtraukti net tavo artimiausius žmones.
Knygoje tiek veiksmo, kad neleis liūdėti, nemažai kuriozinių situacijų. Dėmesį išlaikė visos knygos metu. Veikėjai įdomūs ir išskirtiniai, pilnai išpildyti, nei vieno nereikalingo. Kas mėgstate gražią, iškalbingą lietuvių kalbą, čia sunkiai tokią rasite. Labai daug žargono (knygius, tuščiakiaušis, išverštakis ir t.t. - paminėjau švelniausius), šiurkšių išsireiškimų, bet atrodė, net jie dera šitai knygai. Asmeniškai man Huno personažas labai artimas pasirodė Hariui Hūlei ne dažnai tenka susidurti su tokiais nusigyvenusiais pagrindiniais veikėjais, bet vis dar turinčius šiokius tokius moralės likučius.

Labai daug žargono (knygius, tuščiakiaušis, išverštakis ir t.t. - paminėjau švelniausius), šiurkšių išsireiškimų, bet atrodė, net jie dera šitai knygai. Asmeniškai man Huno personažas labai artimas pasirodė Hariui Hūlei ne dažnai tenka susidurti su tokiais nusigyvenusiais pagrindiniais veikėjais, bet vis dar turinčius šiokius tokius moralės likučius.

Northwind is the first book in the Bob Hoon series, which is a spin-off from the earlier DCI Jack Logan books. I’ve been hearing good things about this author for the last few years, but had avoided the main series because of warnings that the first one shows a cat being tortured - but I hate reading series out of order, so didn’t want to start with book two either. Most authors learn their lesson about featuring animal cruelty, so I figured I’d be safe enough with this one and right enough, no animals are harmed in this book - I can’t say the same for people though. I listened to the audiobook while running - I thought the full-on Scottishness might be a bit much for my hubby’s Kiwi ears - and thoroughly enjoyed it (passers-by may well have wondered why I was sniggering!) Hoon’s foul-mouthed sweary rants are hilarious and he makes a brilliant anti-hero in his unswerving determination to complete his mission.
Robert Hoon left the Scottish Police Service in disgrace - we are not told why as I presume this would spoil the earlier Logan books, and is wallowing in alcoholic misery when one of his few remaining friends begs him to track down his daughter, a student who has gone missing in London. Caroline was walking home from a night out and has not been seen since. With few clues and little help from the local police, Hoon is going to have to use his own special brand of brutal intimidation to get answers - but will it be enough?
This was a well paced engrossing story which blends dark humour - frequently offensive, so approach with caution if you don’t like bad language - and violent action - some quite nasty torture is threatened but the book stops just short of showing it happening. While the plot itself isn’t all that original, the hero is obnoxious, belligerent and devious enough to stand out from the rest of the genre. The narration by Angus King was brilliant - he doesn’t hold back with Hoon’s full Scottish brogue, but he handles the other voices admirably too. I didn’t feel I missed out by not having read the Logan books, and probably will start that series at some point, but there are three more Hoon books to read first. Rounding up from 4.5 stars for helping me run 15km today so I could finish it!

Jau tiek detektyvinių serijų pradėjusi skaityti, kad atrodo, kam dar vieną pradėti. Bet į JD Kirk knygas atkreipiau dėmesį atsitiktinai, parduotuvės lentynoje pamačiusi pavadinimą "Kairiarankis", kadangi pati kairiarankė, tai tiesiog negalėjau nepastebėti. O tai antra serijos dalis, tai laukus palaukus, ėmiausi serijos nuo pirmosios dalies "Šiaurės vėjas". Ir ką, knygą pasiėmiau iš bibliotekos, bet ji tokia mano skonio, taip patiko, kad, keliasdešimt puslapių perskaičiusi, jau ėjau į parduotuvę ir nusipirkau sau egzempliorių į namų biblioteką. Nenuvylė, vertinu labai gerai, būtinai pratęsiu pažintį su ne pėsčiu Robertu Hunu "Išverstakiu ".

I can't imagine how J.D.Kirk somehow has me laughing out loud with tears running down my face, then within a minute or two panting for breath, trying to keep up with the action. But he does.
Northwind is superb if you like plenty of action coming at you in very raw ways, that is. And it is raw stuff, no doubt about it.
Nothing's going to stop Bob Hoon in this book. The action builds up faster than ..... oh I nearly slipped into a Hoonerism of my own there. Let's say faster than a speeding bullet. Who should he trust? Who's on the side of justice?
The thought of Hoon in London is scary (especially for those of us living in London). Anything could happen. And so much does. I can't possibly go into details, I'd give too much away. Just be sure that as Hoon attempts to help out an old friend the action never stops.
There's a neat Afterword too from J.D.Kirk, where the author speaks about the way Hoon's character has developed from his first appearances until Northwind.
I can only strongly suggest that you buy it and enjoy Northwind. Be ready for laughter and suspenseful action in huge measures.

Nemeluosiu, pradžioj buvau skeptiška dėl šios knygos, nes atrodo nepatraukė ji mano dėmesio, tačiau perskaičiusi kelias apžvalgas susigundžiau, kad ir man jos reikia 🤭
Na ir kokio puikumo šis trileris 😍 Robertas Hunas pirmuosius skyrius mane tikrai piktino, atrodė nesusidraugausiu gal su šiuo veikėju, tačiau užteko poros skyrių ir aš visiškai įsitraukiau į šią istoriją. Hunas išties neieško žodžių kišenėje, o keiksmažodžių taip pat nors vežimu vežk, tačiau šios knygos istorijai ir visai atmosferai šis personažas labai tiko ir pritiko 🤭 Ir juokiausi iš situacijų ir pykau, sukėlė visokiausių emocijų, tačiau knyga tikrai įtraukė ir nepaleido iki pat pabaigos. Knygos herojus Hunas gal ir nėra pats originaliausias, nes tikrai daug knygų su puolusiais ir atsitiesusiais veikėjais, tačiau savo charizma tikrai puikus. Pagrindinė knygos idėja ir tema man labai patiko. Sukrimtau šį trilerį labai maloniai ir neabejotinai lauksiu antros knygos dalies 😍

Iš pradžių atrodė kaip dar viena pervertinta detektyvų serija, bet gan greitai įsitraukiau. Patiko ir veikėjai, nors gal ir kiek klišniai, ir neblogai sukaltas siužetas, nors kartais ir šiek tiek nuspėjamas, ir humoras, nors ir šiurkštokas. Veiksmo daug, pagrindinis veikėjas beveik neužmušamas, bet beveik nėra šaudynių su krūva lavonų kaip kai kuriuose amerikietiškuose veiksmo trileriuose. Toks jausmas, kad Anglijoj, net banditai vaikšto beginkliai :) Apskritai tikras page turner'is. Gal ir ne šedevras, bet būtinai skaitysiu ir kitas dalis.

4.50 Stars — Wow. What a refreshing take on the modern crime novel! Robert Hoon is absolutely without a DOUBT the best, most inventive, personable, fun, engaging & downright hilarious detectives I can recall.
Our Scottish former-policeman-come-reluctant-amateur-detective is a parody on a parody and isn’t apologising for it. Hoon is a perfect blend of tough-raw-unadulterated-smart & completely uncompromising in the most self-deprecating manner possible. It has to be read to be at all appreciated, but no slouch in the twist department either this modern-tartan-crime-noir is just about as good a laugh and jump you’ll ever get in any combination or mix. JD Kirk must be commended for creating a character (albeit, from his previous crime series) that as a protagonist makes his debut in sheer stunning, gob-smacking, ear-bleeding, constant cursing, delight!!
So good in fact, I’m going to dive into the acclaimed audiobook whereby Angus King embodies Bob Hoon & makes you wonder how in earth he knew the voice you’d already heard in your head.

Buvęs Škotijos policijos vyriausiasis inspektorius Robertas Hunas užsiima atsitiktiniais darbais bei dažnu atveju nenulaiko liežuvio už dantų ten, kur tikrai turėtų.
Huno kasdienybė apsiverčia aukštyn kojomis, kuomet jį aplanko senas bičiulis bei paprašo jo pagalbos. Jis mano, jog tik Robertas gali padėti surasti jo dingusią dukrą Karoliną. Hunas šiam bičiuliui yra skolingas, tad imasi šios užduoties, kuri jam gali kainuoti net ir gyvybę.
Didelių lūkesčių šiai knygai neturėjau, tačiau jie buvo tikrai pateisinti su kaupu. "Blogiukas" ex policininkas, nerealus humoro jausmas bei įvykiai besikeičiantys tarsi gerame veiksmo filme. Kaip jau supratote, šioje knygoje veiksmo netrūko. Tikrai įdomus siužetas bei net labai neprastas knygos pateikimas. Nuojauta man kužda, jog atradau dar vieną mylimą detektyvą. Antroji šios serijos knyga - "Kairiarankis". Tikiuosi greitu metu perskaityti ir ją. "Šiaurės vėjo" atomazga man paliko nemažai klausimų, tad atsakymus tikiuosi rasti kitoje šios serijos knygoje.

Pirma mintis apie Bobą Huną - kietašiknis niekšas. Kodėl? Nes jis užsispyręs keikūnas, kuris savais būdais aiškinasi problemas. Sugedo vandens šildytuvas? Nebėda, padaužys su plaktuku. Liudininkas nekalba? Na tada jam nepasisekė 🤭😅

I picked this up after reading the first book in the DCI Logan Series, A Litter of Bones, I picked that one up for a few reasons, but mainly because authors Alex Smith and JE Mayhew have both recommended the author and series. I am a big fan of Smith’s DCI Kett novels and Mayhew’s DCI Will Blake Series. And having ripped through both of their series and slowing working through all of Mayhew’s others works I decided to give this one a try. It definitely is a Scottish Detective Mystery, and I can see the comparisons with both Smith and Mayhew’s works. I would set this story right in the middle, Smiths are darker and more brutal, and Mayhew’s typically focused a little more on the mystery. This one is a good mix of both.
The description of this novel is:
“Former soldier. Ex-copper. Current man on the edge.
Shunned by his old colleagues, and dividing his time between a dead-end job and the bottom of a whisky bottle, former Police Scotland Detective Superintendent Bob Hoon’s life is a mess.
Then an old face from Hoon’s Special Forces days turns up asking for help: his teenage daughter has been missing for months, the police have drawn a blank, and he needs the kind of help that only Hoon can provide.
And besides, Hoon owes him one.
From the Highlands of Scotland, to the mean streets of London, Hoon’s relentless hunt for the girl will see him make new friends and encounter old enemies. Enemies who know what happened to the girl. And to hundreds more like her.
But Hoon’s been given something that makes him dangerous, something he thought he’d long-since lost: a purpose.
He may be a disgraced ex-copper, a barely-functioning alcoholic, and a borderline psychopath, but Bob Hoon still believes in justice.

The character of Hoon is over the top. He exemplifies the stereotypes taken to an extreme. But by the end of the novel we see some of his redeeming characteristics. Kirk in the afterword informs us that:
“This book was always going to be a challenge.
When I first introduced the then Detective Superintendent Bob Hoon in my DCI Logan crime fiction series, he was so foul-mouthed and unpleasant as to feel almost irredeemable. A larger than life bully with a penchant for bad language, Hoon was a deliberately over the top caricature—a barely human monster who existed largely to make the lives of the other characters that bit more difficult.
Some readers hated him. Others, inexplicably, adored him. And, as the series progressed, I took a perverse delight in making Bob that bit worse in every book. He was a thug, a drunk, and an ever present pain in the arse.
In late 2020, I first had the idea of giving Hoon his own novel. It was ridiculous, I knew. Here was a character so thoroughly unpleasant that even if readers enjoyed his scenes, surely they couldn’t cope with a full length novel in which he took centre stage? Surely they couldn’t actually empathise with such a man and cheer him on?
I tried to push the idea from my mind, but Hoon—because this is what he does—soon forced his way back in. The man is nothing if not persistent, and before long I had stopped thinking about whether it was possible for readers to root for him, and had started thinking about the how.”
By the end I was hooked on the character and pre-ordered book 2 in the series. If I had read more of the DCI Logan books I am not certain I would have picked this up, based on what Kirk states about the character. I am thankful that I did. Hoon makes me think of Alex Smith’s DCI Kett if he did not have the grounding influence of his wife and kids. He is absolutely over the top, foul mothed, and eager to use violence as a blunt instrument to find out what he needs to know. He is not above manipulating people. But he is on the quest for find out what happened to a friend’s daughter, a friend who he owes a lot. And once he has leads to chase he will leave no stone unturned.
But be warned. This story is violent, bloody, brutal and full of language. It is not for all readers. That being said it is an excellent crime thriller with a lot of action. I am looking forward to reading more of the Logan and Hoon novels and books from Kirk’s other pen names.

I wasn’t sure I’d like this one. I love the Logan series and Hoon was simply a despicable and foul-mouthed character – until later books, when we got some of the story behind his misdemeanours. In this book, he does good things, sometimes by bad means. But if he didn’t, they wouldn’t get done and evil would prevail. It makes you think. It’s solidly funny for those who aren’t shocked by the language, which is often hilariously creative. A great read.

Tiesiog WOW, 5⭐️ cia per mazai, 5+ o gal net visos 6⭐️ tie Huno bajeriukai verte prunksteleti, o kartais ir garsiau nusijuokti kas pora minuciu, itampa iki paskutinio puslapio (neperdedant), viskas taip sulipo tarpusavyje, kad negalejau atsiplesti ir pabaigus knyga nepaleidzia ji manes, nes liudna, kad jau perskaityta.

Vienas labiausiai nustebinusių detektyvų šiemet. Pasiėmiau kaip standartinį šio žanro atstovą. Bet kad tai ne Carrisi ar Carterio stiliaus detektyvas, tapo aišku gana greitai. Kitoks rašymo stilius: dinamiškas, gerokai vaizdingesnė kalba ir dialogai (pakankamai smarkiai priartinti prie buitinių) ir gerokai kitoks pagrindinis veikėjas. Nemandagus storžievis. Bet rašytojas taip jam simpatizuoja, kad į tą netašytą nepraustaburnį meškiną įdeda daug gerų savybių. Tai kaip skaitytojas tokio nepamėgs?
Labai gyva knyga. Neištęsta. Daug veiksmo, muštynių ir nešvankybių. Ne visai patiko, kad Robertas pats nuolat provokuoja smurtines situacijas ir visada atsiperka labai lengvai. Bet tokios šios knygos žaidimo taisyklės.
Beje, knyga, galima sakyti, be pabaigos. Todėl iš karto reikia žinoti, kad teks skaityti ir antrą knygą “Kairiarankis”.
