This book will teach the budding elementary school aged geek some of the newest theories about black holes. It will teach adults about Stephen Hawking's playful mind and sense of humor.
This book was written for those pre-geek second and third graders who read all the astronomy books in the j520 section of the library and then pester their parents, teachers and school librarians about the big bang, black holes, comets and life on other planets. I've done stints in elementary school libraries and there are plenty of these kids.
Perhaps some adults may think the story is too young for the science presented -- but I bet these adults haven't worked in school libraries. They don't know about the one "weird kid" who seems to be in almost every second and third grade class in every school in the nation who craves to know the inner workings of the universe and is frustrated that most adults they encounter don't seem to know or care about the questions they have.
My cousin and I were those "weird kids" in our classes. We were mad about science and played "Let's Pretend" long after the other kids our age quit. I can totally imagine him and I pretending that we had an amazing computer that zoomed us out into space and allowed us to ride a comet around the solar system. And in reality, I remember us pretending that we were falling into a black hole at some point.
When I read this book, I felt as if I were eight years old again. I would have LOVED this book. It would have been next to the "Brown Paper School Book" series that I treasured. I felt like I was snooping in on someone else's "Let's Pretend" game.

Wow, what a disappointment. Hawking stoops (in both the avian and, to judge from the result, aristocratic senses of the word) to conquer a young audience, and lands hard on his beak.
This SF tale is festooned with science lessons, and is plainly intended to convince young readers of the importance of knowing the laws of physics--yet those laws are blown off over and over as the story goes along. Furthermore, there are these huge gaps in internal logic--for instance, young George's parents are such eco-activists that they refuse to allow a TV, telephone or computer in the house, but see nothing wrong with constructing a home made electric generator (I wonder what it runs on!).
And, considering that two of the three authors are trained scientists, their grasp on basic astro-facts is pretty shaky; they claim that the moon Ganymede is about the size of Earth's Moon, and elsewhere that a person exposed to space would freeze in an instant--both of which are wrong.
I read this as an ARC, and maybe the latter will be corrected in the final version (one can always hope). Still, how hard would it have been to set the story in our actual universe, where lightspeed is a limit and planets are actually far apart to underpin the science instruction?

This book is a great introduction to some basic science about how the stars and planets form, told incidentally as part of an adventure. Interspersed with science facts and with s some great photos of planets etc at the end of the book. A book by Stephen Hawkings that you can read to the end ;-)

Тут для нього дивне геть усе – маленька дівчинка-фантазерка Енні, її неуважний тато-вчений Ерік, вщерть напхана науковими книжками бібліотека, а надто ж – Космос, трохи сноб і мізантроп, а за сумісництвом — найпотужніший комп’ютер у світі. Для Джорджа, який росте у сім’ї екологічних активістів, котрі вважають науку і техніку найбільшою загрозою природі, таке технічне диво здається геть неймовірним. А найбільшою несподіванкою стає те, що з допомогою Космоса можна мандрувати відкритим космосом. Так-так, наяву, вбравшись у скафандр і вийшовши у портал, намальований комп’ютером.
Таке грандіозне знайомство, звісно, має для хлопця сповнене пригод продовження. Для читача – теж. На вас чекатиме подорож верхи на кометі, участь у міжшкільному конкурсі наукових проектів, викриття підступних планів вчителя Віздока, народження зірки, пошуки планети і загадкові чорні діри. Ви дізнаєтеся, чи є у Всесвіті інша Земля, як народжуються зірки, чи можна вибратися з чорної дірки і що важливіше для людства – шукати інший дім чи спробувати врятувати той, який є.
Як і кожне порядне науково-популярне видання, «Джордж і таємний ключ до Всесвіту» містить багато наукової інформації – цифр, фактів, гіпотез. Але замість того,щоб завантажити нею текст, автори винесли її «за дужки», помістивши на окремих таблицях-вставках. І от поки герої пролітають мимо Сатурна (наприклад), ти можеш все-все прочитати про цю планету. А можеш і ні, якщо тобі не дуже цікаво, яка у нього маса і скільки триває там рік.
Ще у книзі є приголомшливо красиві кольорові вкладки-ілюстрації, на яких галактики і туманності демонструють усю свою велич. На форзаці й палітурці також заховано декілька цікавинок (скретч-покриття, наприклад), тому дитині – та й дорослому теж – сам процес читання приноситиме неабияку втіху.
Також приємно, у «Джорджі…», попри весь наукпоп і пригоди, автори заторкнули і типово підліткові теми – буллінг у школі, конфлікти й непорозуміння з батьками, дружба, довіра і так далі. Шкільні вчителі, до речі, теж не найдостойніше виглядають. А один із них і взагалі виявляється таким собі «доктором Зло». Цілком у дусі дитячих уявлень про «улюблених» педагогів))
Головний плюсик книги для мене у тому, що вона досить переконливо доводить: вчитися — цікаво. Наука тут постає не нудним переліком цифр і фактів, і територією, повною як уже здійснених, так і майбутніх відкриттів. Тому якщо ви такий самий, як і я, гуманітарій і в школі були переконані, що вам ця фізика сто літ не треба, а зараз намагаєтеся розібратися в теоріях Гокінга — велкам. Бо «Коротка історія часу» мені якось не пішла, а от «Джордж…», як такий собі лайт-варіант — дуже і дуже.
«Якщо десь і ж ще одна Земля, то вона далеко-далеко звідси. Шукати нові планети й світи – дуже цікаво. Проте, хай там як, все одно хочеться повертатися додому. Мусимо зробити все можливе, щоб за сто років на Землю все ще можна було повернутися».
«Щоб відчинити двері до Всесвіту й допомогти Землі, ви не мусите шукати таємного ключа. Є ключ, яким можуть користуватися всі, — треба тільки навчитись. Це – фізика. Саме вона допоможе зрозуміти Всесвіт довкола нас».
Таке грандіозне знайомство, звісно, має для хлопця сповнене пригод продовження. Для читача – теж. Un saggio di divulgazione scientifica ed ambientale, mascherato da romanzo fantascientifico di formazione?
La domanda centrale del libro è: la scienza ci salverà dal collasso ambientale? La scienza come quasiasi altra forma di conoscenza umana, è uno strumento molto importante, indispensabile è come lo utilizziamo, questo strumento.
A metà tra un libro di testo ed un'avventura ai limiti del cosmo, questo romanzo ci racconta di un bambino che per caso e/o per curiosità, scoprirà di quante meraviglie è composto il nostro pianeta, anzi delle infinite scoperte che ancora ci attendono sull'universo intero, ovviamente prima e contemporaneamente dovremmo imparare a vivere in comunità con tutta la Natura.

It was kind of nice, but very simplistic in the writing and the characters/story topics were cardboard types.
I read it with a 10 and a 13 year old, perhaps it is better suited for younger children.

Primo libro della serie per bambini scritta a quattro mani da Stephen Hawking e sua figlia Lucy, un libro pensato per avvicinare i più giovani all'amore per la scienza e l'universo.
Trama
La trama è molto semplice, ma non è tanto quella il punto di forza del libro (se non siete più bambini risulterà a tratti banale -anche per quanto riguarda i dialoghi), ma ovviamente le notizie in esso contenute: per quanto spiegate in maniera semplicistica (qualche volta si entra molto nel dettaglio, ma è assai raro), sono comunque complete ed esaurienti, accurate e fruibili anche per chi è a digiuno di scienza, Universo, stelle, pianeti, comete, buchi neri ecc
Personaggi
Unica pecca che ho trovato nel libro. Perfetto il punto di vista degli scrittori: non esiste una scienza buona o cattiva, dipende dalle persone che ne fanno uso ma...
- gli scienziati sono dei pasticcioni, ma sono divertenti e cool
- gli ambientalisti sono dei fissati che non pensano al bene dei figli (che secondo loro vengono presi per i fondelli a scuola e che non possono mangiare patatine, cioccolata e bibite gassate come pasto a scuola, ma devono "accontentarsi" di succo fatto in casa, panino e focaccine fatte in casa... ma siamo seri? Poverino?!) e che si mettono in ridicolo sia in pubblico (con le manifestazioni) che nel privato (conducono una vita "sacrificata" perchè sono tra chi la pensa come loro, ma vivono in gruppi distaccati dalla comunità. Vabbè ovvio, anche io che sono vegana e non la penso come il resto delle persone vivo solo circondata da persone vegane, nella mia casa vegana e nel mio mondo vegano. Ma quante str*nzate!!)
Fortunatamente la loro visione cambia alla fine del libro: solo unendo le forze si possono ridurre i danni al pianeta e salvarlo.

Non avendolo letto in inglese posso giudicare la traduzione, che risulta scorrevole, coerente: non ci sono giochi di parole non trascritti, nè punti poco chiari. Assolutamente adatto al pubblico a cui è rivolto.

I really thought this one was terrible. The science was interesting, but too much like science fiction, so that it seemed like fantasy. The writing was good enough, but some of the themes were disturbing. I think the ending was supposed to be a coming-together of all the different factions, but it message of the book seemed to be that environmentalists are against all technology and innovation, and that it’s okay if we destroy this planet because science can find us a new one.
I would love someone to explain to me the visual references to The Little Prince. They were far too obvious to be accidental, and yet nothing was really made of them. I just can’t see George as a modern-day Little Prince.
The book design was atrocious. My reading was often disrupted mid-sentence by sidebars and pages of photographs. I enjoyed the sidebars- they were better than the story, but the placement of them was problematic. Likewise, the photos were cool, but they weren’t placed near the relevant content in the book, and often came in the middle of the chapter. When I reached the end of the photos, I had to go back and reread the last page of text to get back into the story. We’ve made such strides in design recently, that there’s really no excuse for this.
It always makes me sad when books like this get so much press because of their authors when so many wonderful books are ignored.

Консультант магазину, де я вибирала книги, поцікавившись віком моєї дитини, принесла цілу підбірку чудових видань, які нам підійшли б, на її думку. Я ж почала гортати "Джорджа і...", на що жінка завважила, що ця серія — для старших, ніж мій син, дітей, і дуже здивувалася, коли до каси я підійшла не з книгою про мишок чи вовчиків, а все-таки з цим товстеньким томом "для старших". Зараз він — у переліку улюблених книг сина, а про космос та його дива він може говорити годинами. Зізнаюся, що й свої знання про Всесвіт я значно поповнила, хоча свого часу вважала себе маніячкою всього, що пов’язане з космічною темою)))
Сюжет книги — фантастичний. Одному не-божевільному вченому вдалося створити комп’ютер, за допомогою якого можна мандрувати космосом. Справжнім відкритим незвіданим космосом, просто ступивши у нього крізь відчинені двері-портал. Цей вчений виявився сусідом Джорджа, вони позанйомилися, і, як-то кажуть, понеслося. Героя і читачів чекають не тільки космічні пригоди, а й купа цікавої наукової інформації про Сонячну систему, планети, комети, зірки, їх народження та смерть, а ще про найзахопливіші для сина чорні діри. Інформація подана настільки доступно, що навіть дошколярик сприймає її легко. А оті всі відстані у мільярди кілометрів та сотні тисяч світлових років навіть мені уявити складно, тож великі цифри нас не лякають)))
Окрім характерних чорно-білих ілюстрацій (довелося паралельно розповісти дитині про те, що таке графіка))), у книзі багато кольорових фотознімків реального космосу чудової якості — ще один великий плюс видання

The Universe Witout Yawning
Stars, Planets, Comets, Asteroids, Nebulae, Black Holes, Galaxies... there's a whole population of space inhabitants defying our curiousity -- full of secrets waiting for us to be known!
But those huge complex scientific essays can be so immensely boring, that they easily bury our original enthusiastic curiousity :(
Fortunately, Stephen and Lucy Hawking, were sensitive enough to feel the problem, and created a short series of scientific books, talking about the mysteries of the universe, aiming to make it easier for us, curious common mortals!... ;)
This books combine science facts with adventure, which is certainly a great anti-boredom kind of recipe!...
In short:
-- Wanna know about the Universe without yawning?
-- This book is for you!
P.S: This scientific adventurous series was specifically created to motivate children into physics, but since curious adults that hate boring knowledge were forgotten, I suppose they will have to enjoy the ride ;)

Lectura más bien infantil que debería haber hecho cuando tenía la edad y no ahora, pero aun así, la he disfrutado mucho. He aprendido bastante cosas del universo (porque con lo tonta que soy si no me explican esto para bebés no me entero de nada) y con unas imágenes preciosas además de fichas explicativas de conceptos y datos muy interesantes!
Como digo la historia no es muy allá, pero necesitaba un libro así sencillito para pasar el rato y La clave secreta del universo ha cumplido con mis expectativas :)

Primero que nada...¡QUIERO UN COSMO EN MI VIDA!
Dicho esto, me ha encantado la forma en que está escrita está novela, la parte científica es explicada de forma tan amena, tan simple que es fácil no solo entenderlo sino imaginar que estás ahí en el espacio, viendo que es lo que ocurre, me parece una forma entretenida de atraer a la ciencia a los jóvenes y no tan jóvenes que van creciendo con ese miedo a la horrible y temida física, aún cuando está es la base de prácticamente todo lo que sabemos del universo y la vida en general.
Dicho esto, me ha encantado la forma en que está escrita está novela, la parte científica es explicada de forma tan amena, tan simple que es fácil no solo entenderlo sino imaginar que estás ahí en el espacio, viendo que es lo que ocurre, me parece una forma entretenida de atraer a la ciencia a los jóvenes y no tan jóvenes que van creciendo con ese miedo a la horrible y temida física, aún cuando está es la base de prácticamente todo lo que sabemos del universo y la vida en general.

I read this aloud with my 8 year old who is very interested in space. She now wants her own Cosmos so she can go anywhere in the universe. This was a very fun read aloud and we both learned something new about the universe. Paired with the show Cosmos and a few other additional books about space, this made a great spine for our space unit.

I love children's books. I want to write some myself, and when someone offers to let me borrow their copy of a book for children written by Stephen and Lucy Hawking, I'm more than game.
George's Secret Key to the Universe is a thoroughly enjoyable and informative novel about a boy's friendship and adventures with a scientist named Eric, his daughter Annie, and Cosmos, the most amazing computer in the world. This book not only takes one to an adventure through asteroid belts and black holes; it also stresses on the need to reconcile the need for climate and ecological action with science and technology (and the need to look for an alternative one can return from rather than move onto post-abandonment). In that sense, this is a book that seeks to imbibe responsibility in the reader; and even through self-sacrifice (of the possibility of winning at the science competition). Even though I probably wouldn't have understood these things explicitly, little me would have LOVED this book.
Sure, there are elements of formulaic sci-fi stories — the stark demarcation of good and evil, the easy resolution and the picture of eccentricity — but the book itself speaks of understanding the difference between "science fiction and science fact". There are also many reinforced stereotypes; gender roles and such; but I guess that isn't one's primary focus when writing a book about bringing together our world with a whole new one — even for children.
I still loved this book, and wonder which of Lucy and Stephen came up with the idea of broccoli muffins.

Despite being a science teacher by profession, despite being a supporter of science, despite wanting to love this book, I did not. It was slow, painfully stereotypical in its characters (main scienctist = crooked glasses, ruffled hair, gangly, kind; bad scientist = mean, ugly, collection of students to do his bidding...), predictable, and had too much of an agenda. I painfully wanted to be able to skim the book to get to the ending to say I finished it, but instead I had to listen, and listen, and listen. So why did I? Because there were moments when I thought it could be redeemed; moments when I hoped it would be less didactical and more of a story. But, alas, it was not.

Маю величезні прогалини у знаннях з фізики та астрономії, тому не вважаю, що ця книга розрахована лише для дітей, адже я також дізналася багато чого цікаво про нашу Сонячну систему, зірки, планети, та деякі неймовірні факти про космос. В кого є бажання заповнити пусті місця стосовно фізики та астрономії - рекомендую!!! А от дітей ця книга змусить ніколи не допустити прогалин і вмотивує на вивчення нашого всесвіту, адже він такий вражаючий!!!

Labai graži knygelė apie visatos paslaptis vaikams. Ir su “graži” turiu omeny ne išvaizdą. Buvo lengva skaityti, knygoje gausu iliustracijų, personažai gyvi ir įtikinantys, o ir veiksmo buvo. Žinoma, tai vaikiška literatūra, sakyčiau vyresnio amžiaus vaikams, jauniems paaugliams. Savo ketvirtokui turėjau stabtelėjusi paaiškinti ar tiesiog pabūti, kad “įsėstų”, nes sunku suvokti Visatos mastus, tiek laiko, tiek atstumo. Ir suaugusiam sunku suvokti.
Rekomenduoju besidomintiems visatos paslaptimis.

Me pareció un libro interesante, tiene un montón de datos del espacio, con dibujitos y todo jajaja me hubiera gustado leerlo hace algunos años atrás, hubiera sido una mejor experiencia.
Mi problema principal fue la trama, es que tenía demasiados vacíos, cosas muy obvias y una resolución muy simple.
Está bien que este orientado más a un público infantil-juvenil pero igual hay historias infantiles con mayor profundidad así que es un detalle que, al menos yo, no perdono xd

Хлопчик Джордж живе із батьками, має кабанчика Фредді, мають екоферму, вирощують овочі, не користуються електроенергією та телефонами. І аж раптом до сусідського будинку переїжджає дивна сім'я. Сім'я вчених, які вивчають космос.
Це книга моєї малої, але я для себе закрила прогалину в астрономії. Я багато чого не знала, насправді. Тож раджу, ще і дуже гарно оформлена

What an easy way to study science in a intresting book. During the reading I learned things that I never thought would. Educational science was the principal idea of Lucy and Stephen the authors of this book. We should take care of our planet because if we dont it will be better difficult for us humans to find another place to leave. George secret key to the universe is a book that helps us reflect in our actions towards our planet. A lot of information is being transmitted to us thanks to the knowledge of scientists and the wonderful job of Lucy and Stephen. George helps us understand that we need everyones help because eventhough one can make a difference the planet consequences is everyones foult. I like when George discuses the difficult way to find a planet where to live if we keep acting like we are doing. A funny consequence that george gives us is that if we go to live to Mercury, one day lasts four 59 days of our earths day. Imagine that, if one day at school lasted 59 days that will be prety awful!!!

It really made me want to read more and more!
The series taught me a lot about space and the universe and really enriched my knowledge.
It sounds really fun to be able to travel to space whenever you want through a portal.

This book was very informative about outer space while providing an exciting story. I first came to this book when I realized the amazing scientist Stephen Hawking participated to write this book. At first, I thought the book would be a fact-packed scientific book but I was wrong. It had an exciting storyline and I believe that I learned plenty from this book. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is willing to read an educational and interesting book.
