A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2013 Advent Calendar collection Heartwarming.
Christmas is a time for peace, love, and goodwill toward mankind. Not! More like cheating exes and absentee friends. For Emmett Byrd, spending the holiday season with his old college friend Terry in San Diego is supposed to be about mending his broken heart. But when Terry deserts him at the last minute, leaving Emmett alone in his condo for Christmas, it's just the icing on the cake of a crappy year full of betrayal and lost love. The only Christmas spirit this Scrooge is feeling is the alcoholic kind. Then a slightly kooky, unsophisticated farm boy named Sky knocks on the door looking for Terry, and a case of mistaken identity reawakens Emmett's hope in happily ever after.
CHRIS SCULLY lives in Toronto, Canada. She grew up spinning romantic stories in her head and always dreamed of one day being a writer even though life had other plans. Her characters have accompanied her through career turns as a librarian and an IT professional, until finally, to escape the tedium of a corporate day job, she took a chance and began putting her daydreams down on paper.
Tired of the same old boy-meets-girl stories, she found a home in M/M romance and strives to give her characters the happy endings they deserve. She divides her time between a mundane 9-5 cubicle job and a much more interesting fantasy life. When she’s not working or writing (which isn’t often these days) she loves puttering in the garden and traveling. She is an avid reader and tries to bring pieces of other genres and styles to her stories. While her head is crammed full of all the things she’d like to try writing, her focus is always on the characters first. She describes her characters as authentic, ordinary people—the kind of guy you might meet on the street, or the one who might be your best friend.
Although keeping up with social media is still a struggle given her schedule, she does love to hear from readers.
Reader's Advisory: No HEA or HFN ... Instead there is a promise of something more
I love Chris Scully's writing. Love it. She never done me wrong before -- even if her stories are all either short stories or novellas. Her stories just fit me -- in terms of plot, characters, and even those clean less smutty scenes. This one is another example.
This was like one of those holiday movies, when two people who met under circumstances (in this case, Emmett was being 'abandoned' by his friend just when he needed a shoulder to cry on -- or at least to bitch about his cheating ex) and they had delightful conversation and they connected ... even for a short span of time. That was what happened here.
Emmett was drunk and bitchy when Sky appeared on Terry's doorstep. Emmett immediately thought that Sky was one of Terry's one night stand. What I loved the most about this story was how Emmett and Sky were quite different in characters-- and that was in addition to their 10 age gaps -- but somehow they clicked, you know? Emmett was the serious one, he believed in rules and morals and fidelity and relationship. Sky was the son of free-spirit couple from Iowa, whose thoughts might felt mature and surprised Emmett several times over.
Wait, wasn't this be a case of instant-love then, you ask? And Ami, you hate those things!
That was the beauty of it. Emmett and Sky didn't immediately had sex and fell in love. In fact, like I wrote in the disclaimer, this ended as a promise of something more (). That was definitely a wonderful way to end this -- just like one of those holiday movies that made you hopeful.
Oh, I forgot ... there was this 'a bit of mystery!' about who Sky really was to Terry. I was tempted to check the several last pages to find out about the revelation -- because come on, Sky was NOT one of Terry's toy boy for the night, I was so sure of that! But who was he? Well, you need to find out by your own :)
Another lovely story, Ms. Scully (hey, it rhymed!). And YES, I want a sequel, pretty please? Maybe starting with
4.5* Now that's the way to make a story cute and sexy without copious amounts of in your face love scenes that swamp it completely. Sometimes you just want romantic and ' Rebound ' gives you that but there's still heat and in this case it teases and tantalises with its gentle sexual tension and sensual hints of whats to come.
Having been cheated on by his partner of 12 years, the story opens with Emmet, just before Christmas Eve, drowning his sorrows in the flat of his slutty friend Terry, who has also abandoned him after getting Emmet there under ( sort of ) false pretences so Emmet is not a happy man.....Enter Sky, a young guy who proceeds to change Emmets views on life in general! There's a bit of a tease as to who Sky is to Terry but apart from that its just a lovely opposites attract story.
Sky is adoreable and Emmet despite being grumpy to start with, is still a very endearing character who just needed to meet someone who could make him see that in his cynical world, there's still a chance for love. Watching the hippyish, innocent but wise Sky and poor distrustful, hard done by Emmet connect over the course of the story was sweet, tender and funny, as Emmets prickly persona is broken down by Sky's guileless nature.
A lovely Christmas story that leaves you feeling contented and not only full of hope for Emmet and Sky's future but also with hope that Chris will possibly give us more of these two very likeable guys. I'd love to see a continuation of their story together and after just reading and loving Inseparable & When Adam Kissed Me, Chris Scully is now definitely an auto buy for me. Great read!
Really sweet Christmas novella, rounded up because the narrator, Michael Stellman, was so freakin' cute!
I'm not sure why this narrator worked so well for me. He doesn't have much vocal differentiation between characters, that's for sure, but he sounded age-appropriate (which is hard to find sometimes) and there was something really attractive about his voice. I've looked him up (I tend to do that- stalker alert!) and though he is older than I had pictured, he has a clear, 20-something voice which was perfect for this story.
The story itself was also super sweet. It is about finding hope and the Christmas spirit, even when you've given up. I really liked Emmett, who was grumpy and jaded but warmed up over time. Sky was more of a mystery to me, but I enjoyed his optimism and mix of hippy/traditionalism.
My only real issue is that I wasn't completely sold on the ending. Calling it a HFN would even be a stretch. It is left pretty open ended, though I've heard I MUST read the bonus chapter on the author's blog (https://chrisscullyblog.wordpress.com...).
If you like holiday stories that focus on the start of a relationship, then pick up this little gem!

5 stars and ♥♥♥♥♥ from me, a wonderfully heartwarming and feel-good Christmas story.
Two delightful main characters, some really funny snarky stuff from Emmett even when he was drunk (which was most of the time) and Sky, well what can you say about him, he was just plain adorable, and I can only hope that Chris does a sequel as she did with Adam and Joe in 'Inseparable' and 'When Adam Kissed Me'. I also loved what we got to see of Terry and his 'on-again off-again' boyfriend Rick....he may not have treated Emmett very nicely by leaving him in the lurch at Xmas, but he was sooo funny, had some great comeback lines and in the end did him a huge favour by forcing him to face up to the fact that his 'great love' with Andy (the asshole) was well and truly dead. This is what a Christmas story is all about...and no sex!! Many thanks Chris. x♥
Ugh. All my notes for this are on my old Nook and didn't transfer. Boo!
I enjoyed this story. I love the way Chris Scully can pull you in quickly and make you fall for the boys. Emmett was a total disaster when wholesome attractive and humble Sky shows up at the door. Talk about a bad first impression. Well, not too bad if Sky is still there when Emmett wakes up right?
These two were fun. I loved how they went about the holiday and made it their own. I loved the connection they got and how wonderful Sky was, *sigh* that dance. They just connected in a lovely way and then that ending? I want more and I am so happy I found an epilogue/bonus chapter on the authors site which I am reading now.
I really liked this story. Although Emmett was at a bad place mind-wise, meeting Sky helped him to move on. I would like to visit these two again, perhaps a year later? Telling us what happened with them? This author moved to my auto-buy-list this year. Every single story was a solid 4 star read and I can't wait for more from her.
Chris Scully is one of my go-to authors for a “happy place” read. Everything she writes has such an ease about them and I know she will handle her characters and readers with care. There isn’t any sex in this and no happily ever after, but that just made me love it more, because I felt the nervous excitement for the future just as Emmett felt.
Emmett Byrd has just ended a 12 year relationship with his partner that cheated on him. A partner that criticized his rigidness (no puns, please) and criticized that he was unwilling to true new things and take chances. His long-term friend Terry invites him to San Diego during the holidays for a misery loves company gathering for the two of them. Only problem is when Emmett arrives Terry has reconciled with his on-and-off again lover and leaves Emmett alone at his place. Left to his own devices – and Terry’s extensive wine collection – Emmett finds himself wallowing and drinking to numb out the painful feelings.
A random knock on Terry’s door introduces Emmett to Sky. Sky is a mystery for the majority of the book. How does he know Terry? Why is he so helpful and nice and non-judgmental to a total stranger. He’s a bit stereotypical in that nice Farm-boy way, but on a holiday short, what else really am I looking for? He’s probably too perfect, but he made me smile and the way he made Emmett smile and feel was what made me love this story.
The best aspect of Sky and Emmett’s journey is that Sky knows that Emmett needs to feel settled, needs to come to terms with the pain he feels, and that understanding and knowledge and confidence will make him a better man and a better partner. Just a really sweet and lovely short for the holidays.
Note to the author: I’d LOVE to see Terry and his boyfriend have their own story where they finally make it work OR Terry finally finds a man that treats him right and knocks him on his ass. Please?
Emmett and his ex are recently split after the ex cheated on him (after being together for 12 years!). Not wanting to spend Christmas alone, he calls his friend Terry and tells him to come to San Diego and spend it with him. Little did Emmett know the moment he got there Terry would bail on him and head down to Palm Springs with his boyfriend. **WARNING...RANT AHEAD!** You know, I HATE people like Terry. Like Emmett said, Terry usually uses him as a shoulder when he one, but now that Emmett does he takes off on him like he's nothing. Like his feelings don't matter. Personally, I think I would be more pissed at Terry than at the ex. Calling Emmett a drama queen? Right. He could have stayed in Chicago and saved his money if he was going to be alone in California anyway. Terry is a superficial jackass. Plain and simple.
Anyway, rant over, Emmett is getting drunk and moping around Terry's condo when Sky knocks on the door. Oh how I love Sky. He made my heart go pitter patter. He may be young but old fashioned and wise beyond his years. Emmett and Sky's first meeting was classic. I loved the sharing they did, more so Sky's sharing than Emmett's but I'll take it all :). The eggnog, the turkey, the dancing, the tree, the end. SWOOOOON!
I want more. I want a sequel right now because I NEED to find out what happens.
Such a sweet, lovely story. I loved Emmett and Sky so much!! Especially Emmett's bristly self at the beginning, cynical, bitter, and oh so funny. And Sky's reacting to him in the best way possible.
And again, my problem with short stories: I wanted it to be longer! The ending was astoundingly satisfying, although it really wasn't a HEA or a HFN, but you still felt as if these guys will have their HEA together somehow, without a doubt. I loved that!
However, if there's any chance for a sequel I'm not too proud to beg. Repeatedly. Loudly. Looking totally adorable. Please. Please please please. Please?
4.5 stars. Sweet and so romantic. Almost too over the top for me but hey it's Christmas and I ate it up. While the story is open-ended (and some may have a problem with that)- I loved the sense of hopefulness the reader is left with at the end. I hope there's more to come.
This was more than charming, more than lovely, more than heartwarmingly delightful. The story all takes place in fashionable but empty, cold, and sterile condo. Emmett races out of Chicago to San Diego to commiserate with his friend who is also in the dark depths of a breakup. Perfect—spend Christmas with an old friend who is hurting as much as he his, Emmett thinks, and each will try and pull the other together. That certainly should have worked. Uh-oh! Terry, the friend, made up, once again, with his guy and left for Palm Springs before Emmett arrives and without telling him. Sheesh. That doesn’t sound like a good friend to me. Emmett is beginning to wonder about that, too. It is almost Christmas time, the time of magic and transformation? Do you believe? I do!
Emmett Byrd lives and works in Chicago. They have a lot of snow there and since he is hurting from the breakup with his significant other of twelve years, he needs to race away from everything, he thinks. After three days in Terry's empty condo and only one pizza, multiple bottles of wine, little sleep, no changing of clothes, and no showering Emmett is kind of trashed. Should he let the person persistently ringing the doorbell in? He does and with his perception and articulation sounding very much like he has had too much to drink, he concludes the gorgeous guy must be Terry’s rebound fellow who has been unceremoniously stood up! Of course, from Emmett’s bleary standpoint everybody and everything has been stood up!
Sky has left something at Terry’s. Terry is Emmett’s good friend or was his good friend. Sky may be from Iowa and feeling a bit out place in San Diego, but he grasps Emmett’s situation very quickly and perceptively. He is more than the complete gentleman and willingly jumps in to be a bit of a nursemaid to Emmett. Sky was way gorgeous and so consoling as to seem like an Angel. I thought so. Emmett keeps wondering if Sky is an ax murderer. Sky is simply amazing as he does all the right things to soothe Emmett’s battered and flattened feathers. I want Sky for me! What a Christmas present, I thought, but Emmett is a bit perception-challenged, a tad rigid, and hurting oh so bad. What Sky does is simply angelic. He is the exception to the rule. By the way, his parents really named him ‘Sky Miracle Whittaker’.
This is a fantastic Christmas treat and definitely should not be missed.

Dear Chris Scully, with this you hit all the right buttons for me once again.
What a wonderful and fun read! Truly enjoyable from beginning to end.
"I'm not here for you. I'm here for me. You're my Christmas miracle."
I loved that part. And the fact that yes, there is no sex overload ruining the mood, which was just sweet and touching somehow. I really enjoyed it. They're both very likeable and sweet guys, and Sky, lol he's fantastic <3
Since reading Inseparable & When Adam Kissed Me I can't get enough of the sweet and funny way Ms Scully is writing. Just purrrrfect for a cozy night after a horribly long day of work.
I would really like to see where Emmett and Sky are headed from here! Maybe a little visit at Sky's farm ? :)
Sky is too good for Emmett. That being said, Sky is too good for everybody and even though he is the sweetest thing on the planet, which usually would irritate the crap out of me, I LOVED him. I also fell for the hot mess that is Emmett. Watching their connection grow as they unexpectedly spend the holiday together, I was totally charmed. Even though Sky and his insight seemed to good to be true, their time together felt real and I couldn't stop reading. I haven't read this author before and right away I looked for more, then I saw their is MORE of Sky and Emmett's story! So . . . downloaded it . . . gotta go!
Review book and audio Emmett is pissed (in the angry and drunken sense). His friend Terry left him alone on Christmas while he’s still nursing a broken heart. Sky is a farm boy who mysteriously shows up at Terry’s apartment. Emmett thinks he’s one of Terry’s “Rebound Boys” so he treats him crappily. But Sky is actually a very sweet, warm-hearted boy who stays to help Emmett through his hangover and the holiday. The two end up bonding and really clicking. They don’t actually “hook up” and in fact the entire story is just the couple of days when they first meet, but there is a bonus chapter that tells what happens next. (Not in audio format, of course)
This is a very sweet story, no sex, not even a HEA or HFN (but the bonus chapter gives us that).
The narration was nice, Emmett’s drunken slurs were funny and the sound quality was good.
If you are in the mood for a sweet, cute “meeting” story this is for you. With the follow up chapter, it will even satisfy those of us looking for the HEA.
I enjoyed it and give both book and audio a 4 of 5 hearts.
Audio Review: 4.0 Stars Michael Stellman has a very pleasant voice, and while he might not be the most animated narrator I enjoyed the performance.
Original Review: 4.0 Stars
Bits of this really made me laugh out loud and while the mistaken identity trope can be tiresome, in this case I didn't mind so much. I liked that this book took things slow, that the MCs didn't immediately jump into bed and act on their attraction...especially given that Emmett suffered a break up of his very long term relationship only a few months earlier. That kind of behavior just didn't fit with Sky's personality; he seemed like the kind of guy who definitely enjoyed sex, but wanted more than just the physical release - wanted something more meaningful, even if that turned out to be friendship.
It has so much potential and promise for becoming a 5 Star read…if there’s a sequel! Especially since I feel that Emmett deserves a HEA with a decent guy. That ex of his was truly scum for what he did.
3.5. It ends with the hope of a beginning, even though once home they ares till three hours apart. Terry is a tool and a rotten friend, just sayin. I loved the Christmas gift Emmett left, so sweet
This book was sweet and funny. Terry was definitely a tool and I wasn't sure I was going to be so crazy about Emmett but Sky was interesting from the beginning. Emmett turned out to be a good guy and I felt bad for him having his heart broken. Sky was adorable. I loved his old-fashioned, honest and down home style. He was exactly what Emmett needed. I loved them with the Christmas tree but loved the ending much more.
This was the perfect little slice of life story to start the holidays. Emmett is still getting over a 12 year relationship and goes to stay with a friend, only said friend takes off with his man of the day. Then Sky shows up looking for Emmett's friend and turns out to be exactly what he needs to move on. The story was short but do sweet. I would love to know what happened next, but it was still great.
This story has plenty of Christmas spirit to go around, even if it doesn't seem so at first. Te dark and depressing beginning quickly morphs not a somewhat bewildering and quirky development between two strangers who meet and don't quite know what to make of each other. And when the story changes a final time, it becomes a quietly romantic tale that isn't just about Christmas, but about hope and new beginnings.
Emmett is miserable. His cheating ex (of 12 years!) has left him disillusioned, his friend Terry, the one he was supposed to spend Christmas with, has left him behind so he can be with his on-again boyfriend, and the stranger who enters Terry's condo is probably one of Terry's many boy toys and could be an ax murderer for all Emmett knows. Not that he really cares, he is much more interested in decimating Terry's expensive wine collection and wallowing in self-pity and misery.
But the stranger slowly gets to Emmett - in the best way. With a name like Sky, some interesting quirks, and a loving nature, he has Emmett opening up without really wanting it. Sky makes sure they celebrate Christmas, takes care of Emmett, and even holds him when he finally cries for all he has lost. But Sky also gets Emmett to feel again, and that makes him think about his future in an entirely different light.
If you like stories that go from doom and gloom to just a little hopeful, if you enjoy reading about men who realize there is more to life than they thought, and if you're looking for a slightly quirky, definitely funny story full of Christmas spirit, then you will probably like this short novella. I think it's totally charming!

Emmett and his best friend broke up with their respective boyfriends and plan to have a mutual crying fest for the Christmas holidays. When Emmett arrives at his friend's home, he ends up house sitting alone because his friend found a new boyfriend and wants to spend Christmas as a loving couple. After turning away several of his friend's ex boyfriends at his door, Emmett gets drunk and wallows in his self-pity. A surprise comes in the form of Sky, who Emmett suspect is another one of his friend's ex boyfriends.
I find it hard to believe that Emmett broke up with his boyfriend of 12 years. That's so sad and it starts off the book with a melancholy that I can't shake off. I keep thinking maybe Emmett and Sky will break up in the future too and love will not last no matter how good the beginning.
Despite the melancholy, the romance is cute and the misunderstanding is just on Emmett's side. I knew Emmett mistaken Sky for his friend's rebound way before Emmett did and got impatient. The story ends with Emmett and Sky giving each other a chance to build on their chemistry. It is very worthwhile to read about how Sky helps Emmett to overcome his grief and convinces him to give them a chance. Overall, this is a sweet, romantic story that focuses on a new beginning.
