As far as everyone else is concerned, Mason Bushing died over a year ago, but now he’s running from Dr. Harlow who is secretly conducting an unauthorized experiment for a drug he calls Purify. Mason Bushing, didn’t get a choice, he was forced to live, and before he knew what was to become of him, he thought that he could go back to the life he had and continue on as if nothing happened; but after a year of being held prisoner, he understood that he needs to break free and take his own freedom…but at what price?
Caught in a web of lies and conspiracy, he has to prove his story, but how can he when even to his own ears does it sound false. The truth hurts and when Mason is confronted with the reality of his past life, he doesn’t know who he can turn to or trust. A drug that healed him of all sickness past and future has ruined his life, and he finds himself alone with everyone after him. How can he fight all the accusations when all evidence points to him … is it better to leave it all behind and start anew? It’s kind of hard when you don’t know what you are capable of or what you will become…
Purified is a gripping tale of a madman who brought to life his vision at the expense of others, a man who shouldn’t exist but holds the power of God, and his living study who would do anything to get away and be free. It was a crazy ride full of suspense, never really knowing what would happen next, every turn Mason made someone or something would block his way, putting those close to him in harm’s way. He was trapped in a small town simply wanting to live his second shot at life, it was so sad to see him get shot down at every chance he got.
After reading we get an idea of what it means to be Purified and it’s not something I would sign up for at least until I know what Mason’s future would hold. There is an ending, but we are left with the possibility of more, so many directions this could take and I’m very curious to see what the author will come up. When I asked the author if there was going to be more, he said there very well could get Dr. Harlow’s story first, which I am pretty excited for, I want to get in the mad-genius’s mind and see where it all began. All-in-all, it is an awesome book and perfect if you’re in the mood for something different.

Purified has a promising premise and theme, I loved the prose and I believe it could have been great if it wasn't for the weaknesses in the plotting and characterization. I find it difficult to relate to the characters as I felt their motivations and behaviours are unrealistic. It made me constantly question their actions and reasonings. This is sad because I really do like the premise alot and it failed all because of a wonky execution.
If you wonder about the details to my conclusion especially the part about the plotting, please read this review because I wholly agree with that reviewer -- She. Nailed. It. Although please be warn that the review in the link is somewhat spoilerish.

I was recently asked by author friend Mr. Brian Smith if I would read and review his book Purified. I accepted and decided to check it out. It was a pretty good read. Here's what the story is about:
When Mason Bushing escapes from an underground laboratory and from a mad doctor named Dr. Harlow who brought him back from the dead as a zombie, he returns back to his hometown to pick up where his life left off by finding his wife and friends. Unfortunately, they don't remember him. Can he stay safe before trouble finds him or will he be transformed by the drug that turned him into the zombie making him purified? Read this book and find out for yourself.
This book was action packed, nail biting, full of terror, and tons of drama. I loved the concept of bringing people back from the dead as a reanimated zombie because it reminded me of a horror anime I watched recently called Sankarea: Undying Love. In the anime a girl and a cat are revived from the dead by a resurrection zombie elixir. In this book the dead are brought back to life by a serum drug called Purify which is injected into the corpses. Definitely check this book out for yourself! I recommend this to all horror, thriller and zombie fans. This was a pretty good zombie medical thriller.

Something that Mason thought he had, it lacked meaning.
Having a second chance seemed to be the most difficult in your life.
Mason, which he had built a life it was gone after his death, and he just had hope of regaining the love, the comfort of his old life with his wife, Jill. It was what he wanted. He was disappointed to realize that part of his life had been a charade.
I really enjoyed read it, and didn't seem at all a waste of time. I would have liked something more in the beginning, that is, as a kind of prologue, as to clarify me more about what I've read, and well the end didn't satisfy me, but I enjoyed it. It wasn't a great conclusion, but it's okay.
To be honest, "Purified" being the first book by the author Brian Robert Smith, presents a drama, in general wonderful.
I fully recommend it.

Mason was forced to live again without feeling desired freedom, under the hand of a doctor something -completely crazy- crazy who thought he was some kind of God, who with a drug called "Purify" offers them a new life, purifying their body of deadly diseases.
There was no freedom there either. There was no past or future. Just dealing again with what was happening, and how he would get through it —If he would get though it.
Something that Mason thought he had, it lacked meaning.
Hell, he didn't know how he got there, but he was pretty sure he had died.His return to the "world of the living", to the town who opened to him the doors when he was building his family, it caused him many problems and distresses contrary to what he believed would find.

"I just want my life back"From beginning to end I really felt the suspense, the drama lived, intrigue and all the feelings that crossed through the characters.
"Shit, man. You don't want to go there"

He wanted to unfold the mystery surrounding the supposed return of Mason Bushing -because for him it was all a farce- he believed in him at heart, in his crazy story.
"Who wants a dead man!"This book brings us short chapters, allowing a quick read. I loved the cover too.

I think zombies are my least favorite mystical creatures but "Purified" by Brian Robert Smith helped me see that they too can be interesting. They certainly aren't like the zombies I know form the movies. The whole idea with a drug that makes you undead is refreshing and sets up an amazing story.
There was a lot of action and terror that kept me hooked in the book. I will look forward to other works by this author!

Time to get Purified
This debut novel by Brian Robert Smith is intriguing and conceptually very strong, however not exceptionally well executed.
Warren's wife has just died. Funny coincidence ... Mason has recently died as well - only now he finds himself miraculously alive & fleeing from his 'savior'. Welcome to the world of Purify, a new miracle drug working wonders to revive the dead.
And so ensues the drama for Mason to prove he is an innocent victim in the deceit of his own death ... and for him to bring down the crazy Doctor responsible ... all while police officer Warren is busy trying to lock him up for fraud & eventually murder.
I really liked where this story started - with Mason already on the run - trying to get back to his life (the way he knew it before his death). The questions raised during this part of the novel were intelligent & well thought out ... is your perception of your life what you really believe it to be?
There was a very interesting plot twist that I didn't really see coming ... and it could have been really cool. Unfortunately, in my opinion, it just didn't really work. It wasn't really properly explained or well managed within the story line. I could have enjoyed it more, had there been some more time spent with it & perhaps a better after-effect.
While this book was entertaining, I felt it lacked depth of character. The third person narrative didn't delve deeply enough into the thoughts or feelings of the characters. I was left feeling that I had just been told a really neat story, instead of feeling or experiencing it for myself.
The ending was fast paced and nerve-bending, bringing the reader to a satisfying conclusion.
Overall, a very nice, ambitious first book. I feel that with some more time and refinement Mr. Smith could bring us an excellent story.

I was lucky enough to be approached with an ARC by author Brian Robert Smith for his debut novel Purified. It isn't the type of book I would normally read, being part horror, part sci-fi, but I have to say it was a thrilling read for me. Sometimes it's nice to step out of my normal genre comfort zones and be pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed a book.
Take one mad scientist, two accomplices and what do you have? Three people set on doing evil. The mad scientist, one Dr. Harlow has created a new drug called Purified. The drug has been created by unauthorised experiments on humans. Dr. Harlow and his goons are cheating death in order to put their drug into practice. The only way to put it into practise is to steal bodies. This is exactly what happened to Mason Bushing, terminal cancer patient. Dr. Harlow thinks he is giving his victims a new lease on life and as such they are his property to do with as he wishes. Dead men and women don't have rights do they? He can't understand why people you have saved from death would not be thankful to him. At first glance you might think they should be grateful, but it is the cost of these changes taking the drug Purified creates that explains why the testing needs to be stopped and the stunning conclusion shows what a monster Dr. Harlow is. Dr. Harlow wants to take the next step in evolution. While in my opinion, that maybe twelve steps down the path of human evolution. It's clearly evident he needs to be stopped somehow.
Mason makes some strange choices initially, however it does make sense by the end. If you had just been resurrected by a magical drug, would you return to your old haunts? Your old haunts where everyone has buried you six feet under and have mourned your passing already? It's a quandary as to what you would do. For Mason, he wants his old life back. He wants to return to his house, his wife and continue with his mundane existence. But things are never simple when you've died and come back. Suspicion is immediately placed upon you and when you suddenly realise that you can't have the life you once lived back, you have to find out how you can survive in this new, altered body.
What Mason doesn't account for is that he isn't the same man from before his death. Dr. Harlow has altered him and it's up to Mason to figure out a way to exist with the changes he has undergone. If he can. The changes are both terrifying and exhilarating.
Mason's returned from the dead and it's only logical that the police get involved. We find Detective Warren assigned to the case. He has recently lost his own wife, Linda, to cancer. At first Warren thinks that insurance fraud has been committed. Then, people start dying around Mason and Warren's unsure if Mason's a fraudster or a murderer or both. Dr. Harlow and his goons don't want it discovered how Mason cheated death and they take measures to lock down the situation. This all leads to Mason having to make a decision he didn't intend to after his escape and he needs Warren to help him.
This book was a very solid debut novel and as such I gave it four stars. I will be interested to see what Brian Robert Smith has install for us with his next book.

I received a free download of "Purified" by Brian Robert Smith in exchange for a honest review. It is hard to believe that this sci-fi thriller is the author's debut novel. This novel was full of imagination and twists and turns at every corner, to keep the reader's full attention.
Is Death FINAL...or can Life be RESTORED?
In this novel Mason Bushing becomes a participant in a medical experiment for a drug called Purify.
After Detective Warren's wife just died, and he is dealing with living his life without her, he is called upon to investigate what looks like a case of insurance fraud. And what he discovers is impossible to believe.
The villain, Dr. Harlowe is a madman who will stop at nothing to prove his wonder drug works. He is so focused on this assignment, he sees nothing else.
The only negative comment I have is that I would have liked for the POV to alternate to allow for greater character depth.
I look forward to reading more novels by this author. A very enjoyable read.

This book was recommended by a reading group I belong to on Goodreads. The storyline and plot were both written well. The plot kept you turning the pages. My only contention with the book is there were too many 'ly' words. But other than that it was a very good. Is recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi novels.

This book was given to me for a fair and honest review.
PURIFIED is the story of a man who's been...dun dun dun Purified! Of his terminal cancer that is. He didn't wake up in the hospital though, instead he woke up imprisoned by a mad scientist. So Mason, our protagonist, opts to escape, and thus our story begins.
I really struggled with what to rate this. While it has some originality, I still felt it was just "okay"; so we'll give it a 2.5, rounding up to 3 stars.
I kind of wish that the description of this book hadn't given away so much, because, while the first couple scenes of this book was pretty good, it caused there to be very few surprises for at least the first half of the book.
It is pretty much shown in the book's description that the intention of the book is not only to tell Mason's story, but to also make the reader ask, "What if it were me?" This idea was pushed throughout the book with all the contemplative moments of the characters. I don't know that making me ask this of myself helped me to enjoy this book though. Instead of saying "Yeah, I can see why Mason reacted that way." I had a tendency to just shake my head at his actions. Granted, him and I are two totally different people, so I suppose this can excuse some of his actions I found a little odd.
Mason's actions weren't the only ones I found a little irritating. I also didn't get Warren's actions. While he was supposed to be the lead guy on the case he did absolutely no investigating. It never even seemed to cross his mind to question the Dr's who treated Mason in the hospital, or find the person who signed the death certificate, or to even talk to the mortician who supposedly cremated Mason. Wouldn't all these people be liable for assisting in the apparent insurance fraud? Instead, all Warren seems to do to "help" the case is harrass Mason and try to get him to confess. This is explained by the fact that he has to maintain his tough guy persona, but I would think he'd still have made it into the police force with more than just that.
When it came to character building Smith did a decent job of keeping his characters...well...in character though. For the most part they stuck to their given roles. Their dialogue stayed pretty true for the most part as well, though I found it a little odd how many people had potty mouths.
While on the topic of dialogue (this was my biggest issue), it just didn't always fit with the actions happening in the scene. It was odd to me how clunky the characters movements were with what they were saying. The transitions just did not flow well. Perhaps this was to add to the speed and chaos of the story? Instead I often times found myself a little confused as to what characters were doing vs. saying.
So....is this a book worth trying? Well, obviously it has quite a few high ratings, so it may be worth a try for people always on the lookout for something new. I don't feel that it's any more of a risky read than any other debut sci-fi thriller (a hard genre to ace). I might eventually try some of this authors future works in the hopes that things smooth out a bit.

Mason's actions weren't the only ones I found a little irritating. I also didn't get Warren's actions. While he was supposed to be the lead guy on the case he did absolutely no investigating. It never even seemed to cross his mind to question the Dr's who treated Mason in the hospital, or find the person who signed the death certificate, or to even talk to the mortician who supposedly cremated Mason. Wouldn't all these people be liable for assisting in the apparent insurance fraud? Instead, all Warren seems to do to "help" the case is harrass Mason and try to get him to confess. This is explained by the fact that he has to maintain his tough guy persona, but I would think he'd still have made it into the police force with more than just that.
When it came to character building Smith did a decent job of keeping his characters...well...in character though. For the most part they stuck to their given roles. Their dialogue stayed pretty true for the most part as well, though I found it a little odd how many people had potty mouths.
While on the topic of dialogue (this was my biggest issue), it just didn't always fit with the actions happening in the scene. It was odd to me how clunky the characters movements were with what they were saying. The transitions just did not flow well. Perhaps this was to add to the speed and chaos of the story? Instead I often times found myself a little confused as to what characters were doing vs. saying.
So....is this a book worth trying? Well, obviously it has quite a few high ratings, so it may be worth a try for people always on the lookout for something new. I don't feel that it's any more of a risky read than any other debut sci-fi thriller (a hard genre to ace). I might eventually try some of this authors future works in the hopes that things smooth out a bit.

A dazzling debut that takes an inspired twist on sci-fi
Full of fascinating and intriguing premise, this novel is conceptually incredibly strong and full of substance. I find medical conspiracies and experimentation a slant on literature that I don’t typically read, and so it was refreshing for me to encounter a story so uncharacteristic of what would be found on my reading list. In a sense this story is a character study about how one man finds himself; slotting into society and discovering his true identity or purpose. With interesting characters and rich details this novel is well thought out and very engaging, as a read that really gets you thinking and reflecting.

This supremely singular, spectacular novel is based on the most ingenious and inspired concepts. Wrought with wonderful premise and outstanding imaginative vision, PURIFIED pushes the boundaries of this genre by taking sci-fi thrillers to a whole other level.
The character of Mason brought to my mind the main protagonist in ‘the matrix’, who similarly is also ‘in the dark’ as to what is happening to the world and to himself. Striped of a former life that was so familiar, I was left guessing in anticipation as to what would happen next and eager to unravel more of the hidden secrets and mysteries.
It took me a while to grasp the concept of the storyline, as it did begin at a slow pace. However, once I was able to delve into this new world and follow Mason’s personal journey with interest the story sucked me in. I am very interested to see where this story goes and what the author’s plans are for a sequel/ continuation of series. The development of the characters within PURIFIED certainly made for compelling reading, and so I am very pleased that I had the opportunity of reading this brilliant book.

PURIFIED by Brian Robert Smith was given to me free in eBook format in exchange for a fair and honest review. And what a read it was. I finished this book in two days and only stopped reading when I had to go to work.
Brian Robert Smith has crafted a tale of suspense that will leave reader's on the edge of their seats and unable to put it down. It is hard to believe that this is his debut novel. It reads like it was written by a veteran author (in a very good way).
Imagine dying and your loved ones experiencing the pain and heartache of having to bury you and move on with their lives.
That is exactly what happened to Mason Bushing. However, he becomes an unwitting participant in a medical experiment for a drug called Purify.
Detective Warren's wife just died. Leaving him struggling to find a way to live without her. When he is called upon to investigate what looks like a case of insurance fraud, he becomes determined to get to the bottom of it. What he discovers is both horrifying and exhilarating. And impossible to believe.
Dr. Harlowe makes a truly terrifying villain. A genius and a madman who will stop at nothing to prove his wonder drug works. He is reminiscent of the Nazi Concentration Camp doctors. He is a man with no conscious and no morals who is losing his battle with sanity.
Because I do not want to give away any more of the plot, I will leave my description at that. Suffice it to say that readers will be drawn in and will be hard pressed to put this book down.

Purified is a drug produced by a mad professor type character, amazingly when injected it purifies the body, brings it back to life but unfortunately, as good news can be, its tempered with some bad.
Mason dies from cancer, wakes and suddenly he’s alive again, escaping from captivity and chased for the secrets his very presence will announce. He attempts to go back to his former life but things have changed, people have moved on, his wife has another man and a big house from the life insurance policy. Mason is hunted by his former keepers, an escaped experiment and death follows him closely.
Couldn't really get into this psychological thriller, felt the characterization was a bit weak to the point where I didn't really care about what happened to the main characters and the plot was similar, there just wasn't enough there to fully capture my interest.
The twist if you can call it that wasn't really hard hitting enough, it sort of bordered on horror but then sprung back to safe ground, sorry but in the end this one just wasn't for me.

Purified by Brian Robert Smith was difficult to put down.
A very creepy start, describing one of my worst fears, and the story effectively progressed from there.
Dr. Harlow, a heinous villain, has created Purify a wonder drug that brings the dead back to life.
Mason Bushing succumbs to cancer and then becomes an unwilling participant in this project. He manages to escape, and
returns to his loved ones where he receives uncertain reactions, some elated and others adverse.
Detective Fillmore is struggling over the recent loss of his wife when he makes a horrifying and unimaginable discovery while investigating a case that looks like life insurance fraud.
A fascinating and suspenseful thriller with engaging characters and numerous twists and turns.
I look forward to more by this author.

If you happen to be stuck in a winter storm at the Overlook Hotel and need to curl up with a good book, this would be it - because it's a bit of a wild ride; definitely a fascinating read. The author is obviously bound for the mainstream with his writing style, and the story is easy to follow. To define the novel, Purified is sort of a Frankenstein/mad scientist/detective/thriller story ranging from evolution experimentation, through assault, fraud, and murder - with a lot of twists and turns. In the end, the good guy finally ... sorry, no spoilers! You have to read the book. Ha! I would very much enjoy reading more from this author in the future. Can't wait for his next book ...

When I was contacted by author named Brian Smith, I was immediately drawn into his debut novel synopsis PURIFIED. Besides the fact that it was outside of my normal genre, I knew I had to give it a chance.

REVIEW: I always enjoy changing it up every once in awhile. Reading the same kind of fiction can be tedious. When Smith contacted me to read his debut novel PURIFIED, I was intrigued. Resurrection of the dead? Evil scientist? Totally down.
PURIFIED opens with two body snatchers working inside a funeral home. Detective Warren is attending the funeral of his beloved life Linda. Only problem? His wife Linda is actually a little less than dead. Across town, Mason bursts forth from a field into his old home town. After his death from cancer a year ago, no one – including Mason’s widow, lover, or best friend – expect to see Mason return ‘from the grave’. Sprouting a story about an evil doctor experimenting on ‘reborn’ patients using a miracle serum entitled ‘Purify’, Mason’s rebirth brings forth the attention of both Detective Warren, the local police department, and the mad scientist he’s trying to evade. Can Mason restart his previous life, or does his creator have a bigger hold on him than he thought?
PURIFIED is straight-up a Doctor Frankenstein and his monster novel – who is the monster and who is the victim? Is it the scientifically engineered new ‘Mason’ or the man who made the serum? I enjoyed Smith’s take on the story – he gave Mason a solid background story to make us understand the longing to go back to his previous life, as well as giving Detective Warren a reason to want to work with Mason (his longing for his wife). The bad guys were stereotypical in nature – a mad evil scientist Dr. Harlow that you can practically hear cackling with evil laughter off the pages and two burly henchmen to do the ‘dirty’ work.
I enjoyed the science fiction aspect to this – it’s truly a philosophical question being raised with this novel. What would you do if you had time back? Who would mean most to you? Who’s the villain in a monster vs. monster scenario? My only gripe with the science-fiction part (in this case, the Purified serum that resurrects those from the dead) is that I don’t feel it was fully described (intentional?). I would have loved to have known the story behind the Purified serum, what it was intended to do, and the evolution it hopes to initiate.
The narrative is straightforward, and happens to switch between perspectives from time to time, which gives us an ample view of the character’s insights and reasonings. Chapters are short, which enable quick reading.
I fully recommend this Canadian author’s story.

A solid bit of storytelling in a debut novel!

This is the story of Mason Bushing. Cancer patient turned mad-scientist test subject, turned...other.
Then there's Dr. Henry Harlow, the eccentric mad-scientist behind the drug "Purify" and the catalyst to all the chaos resulting Mason's new found 'existence'. He even comes with a set of loyal henchmen (Andrew and Steve).
Detective Warren Fillmore doesn't know it yet, but he needs Mason about as much as Mason needs him. Having just lost his wife Linda (also to cancer), Warren will discover that Mason's story is more than just another case to be solved.
This was a very well done suspense novel. Most of the big reveal elements were left until the very end and it worked quite well. Characters weren't too many and the plot threads were kept fairly simple.
It's a great curl-up-by-the-fire-to-avoid-the-polar-vortex-because-spring-is-never-arriving read.
Although it's a stand alone novel, I was curious where it could go as a serial.
Looking forward to more from Brian Robert Smith!

If you had the choice, would you choose to live or die? But what if that choice came with a catch, if you chose to live, would you be able to spend it in captivity? Under the watchful eye of a crazy doctor? Purify is a drug that brings you back from the brink of death, but with a very heavy price indeed.
I’m going to be honest, I had a love hate relationship with this book. I did struggle to pick it up at times and therefore it’s taken me a little time to finish. However, once i got to reading, it wasn’t too bad. I feel that my problem was that I just could not relate to any of the characters. I did also find them to be quite flat and uninteresting.
Mason escaped from the crazy laboratory and went on the run from Dr Harlow. Yet I find it hard to believe, that if your trying to escape someone, why would you just go home? Surely that would be the first place someone would look? I find it very difficult to get to grips with his motives throughout this story as well; I just didn’t find it very believable. I felt a lot of the time, there was a lot of talking but not much going on. I think I actually disliked all of the characters in the book, none of them were very nice people. It’s hard to explain but this thriller just really didn’t do anything for me, I am genuinely really sorry to say.
I can say though, that the book is really well written, for a debut novel it was very good. I genuinely think we have great things to expect from this author and I look forward to reading anything new in future. It wasn’t bad, just not for me.

It’s been a couple of weeks since I finished “Purified,” and as such I’ve had some time to ponder more about the novel. I have to say it’s quite an original concept that was engaging and intriguing to say the least. When I first started reading the novel I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I was actually trying to make sense of it, and lucky for me I continued on with it and was glad I did as it all started coming together for me. It was only then did I realize the author structured the novel to read this way. So to all those who may be confused at the beginning, don’t give up, just continue reading as it will all make sense. Like myself you’ll want to know more about what’s going on, to see where some of the twists and turns takes you, which, trust me, will definitely pique your interests. Not only will the story intrigue you but so will the characters. The author definitely delivers a variety of characters that are well-developed, some of them actually freaky, demented, and insane, which in my books always makes for a better novel. I always love a well-written, sadistic villain. The worse the villain, the better as it makes the story feel and come across as more sinister and evil, and Dr. Harlow is definitely evil. So in the end if you’re looking to read something original that’s both suspenseful and intriguing, then I highly suggest “Purified.” I could tell you more but I won’t as this is the kind of novel you should delve into with an open and clear mind.

Medical science has achieved many wonders, but what if one mad scientist found out how to cheat death. Mason is one of those "lucky" test subjects, however his return is not as simple as he thought. A year post-mortem, he finds himself unable to easily pick up the strings of his own life. Reality is, his existence was erased, and convincing loved ones, not to mention strangers, otherwise, is no easy task. To complicate matters, he faces both fraud and murder charges.
A point-by-point, rapid-fire approach creates a high-energy tone for the book. The first quarter starts out a bit rough due to the many questions we are left with regarding who these people are, and what is going on. However, most of these begin to clear up by the time detective Warren starts investigating.
For Warren, who has just lost his wife, Mason's story is hard to accept, especially because it is something he dearly wishes were possible. He is the opposite side to Mason, for while one struggles emotionally with a loved one's death, the other deals with his own, and the implications of his revival. As they face their problems, several intriguing twists occur. One of which is a mutation element, which despite being subtly foreshadowed, needed more context to make it plausible for this world.

A point-by-point, rapid-fire approach creates a high-energy tone for the book. The first quarter starts out a bit rough due to the many questions we are left with regarding who these people are, and what is going on. However, most of these begin to clear up by the time detective Warren starts investigating.
For Warren, who has just lost his wife, Mason's story is hard to accept, especially because it is something he dearly wishes were possible. He is the opposite side to Mason, for while one struggles emotionally with a loved one's death, the other deals with his own, and the implications of his revival. As they face their problems, several intriguing twists occur. One of which is a mutation element, which despite being subtly foreshadowed, needed more context to make it plausible for this world.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a honest review.
I really thought that this book was good and I quite enjoyed it.
Mason is purified, perfect. He just wants his life back. I felt bad for him. He wants his normal life back. Instead he finds that his wife is a gold digger and has moved on. That is just the beginnings of his problems. He is lucky that his best friends believed his story. His peace that he found goes up into smoke when he gets in trouble with the law and Dr Harlow starts to look for him again.
This book was utter chaos in a good way. Mason's journey is chaotic and the perspective jumps from person to person. I think that the fast pace and chaos feeling added to the novel and made you read it faster and faster just to figure out the ending.
I have to say that I saw the ending coming from a mile away. I found it predictable. Also, I thought that the amount of swearing was a little unnecessary.
Other then that, I did enjoy this book. It was different from what I usually read and it was a fresh read. It was fast, explosive, and a thriller with a little bit of police work in there. Definitely one to check out if you like thrillers or are a big sci-fi fan!

I really enjoyed it. Fast-paced, it slowed at the right times, sucked me into the story and carried me along. I wanted to know if Mason would really get a normal life back, would he get his wife back, would his friends believe his story. What was Dr. Harlow up to? Was he a genius who could cure diseases or a lunatic out of control with medical equipment. I liked the short chapter concept like a James Patterson book. You can get through the book pretty fast. The ending was very fast paced but it also left things open. With the cloning that some scientists are currently doing, kind of makes you wounder what happens when things go wrong. I had to force myself to go to bed at 1 a.m., I had a hard time putting this down. Since it was such a fast read, I think some of the characters could have been fleshed out more like Warren. But then again, some books don't need to go too deep into the background of characters and are just about a few days in the life of the characters. It's the action that keeps you moving and not the history of the characters. I want to be entertained and pulled into a story and this book did that for me.

I was contacted by the author and offered a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Classed as a scifi-thriller, this is the debut novel from author Brian Robert Smith.
I found the premise of this novel very interesting; a mad scientist has invented a drug called "Purify" which literally brings people back from the dead. Is it a blessing or is it a curse?
I found the beginning of the book a little bit confusing, perhaps because it wasn't initially clear exactly who the main character was going to be. I found the writing intriguing through and wanted to know more. I am a fan of medical thrillers and was very curious about this aspect of the story. I would have liked to know a little bit more about the development of the drug Purify and how it was determined who would receive it.
Once I was past the first chapter or two and knew exactly who was who, I became much more caught up in the story. I hesitate to give too many details for fear of spoiling it for future readers, but suffice it to say there were twists to the story and outcomes that I really wasn't expecting! The ending came as a surprise to me and does make me wonder if the story will continue on in some way.

This is totally different to the kind off books I have read in the past. When reading the blurb I wasn’t sure what to expect but I am so glad I took the chance and read this book. I don’t know how to put into words just how good it was it's not a love story but does have love in it, there’s a crazy doctor who will do anything he can to keep what he is doing a secret and keep it all to himself, then there is the main character who has lost everything and even part of himself yet he still keeps fighting for his freedom with the help of close friends and a cop whose lost his wife and is still grieving only to find out everything he believed has been turned upside down. I’d recommend this book to all my friends who love a story that’s different from the rest and stands on its own.

First thanks to Brian Robert Smith for providing me with a copy if this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have to be honest and say that at first I wasn’t too sure how I felt about the book. The plot was really fast paced and I was confused a lot at the very beginning since so many things were happening to the main character and we were given very little answers. Eventually the book picked up the pace and the original plot kept my attention even if I sometimes felt like I had skipped part of the book, I’m pretty sure that I was sometimes as confused as Mason was! I still had a lot of questions when the book ended but I’m pretty sure it was intentional. Mason the main character was strongly written and even if I couldn’t really connect with him he was really well written.
It was a very good debut novel even if it didn't kept me hooked. The author shows promise and I’m definitely looking forward to read more work from him in the future!

For a début novel this was awesome...but sadly not for me. I wanted to read this book based on the following from the blurb
“There’s no use trying to escape. You’re miles from anywhere. You have no clothes, no food, no money... You’re dead, Mason.”
and I mistook this to be a story about a hostage taking of some kind and although it is that, its more based on after Masons escape.
Don't get me wrong this is a great book with a fantastic writing skill but I (personally) just could not relate to the characters (well Warren and his treatment of others) and although I know full well cops do get out of hand (sometimes more than the general public) his actions seemed to much and often in front of others (at the fair-ground for example) it just did not seem that realistic with all those witnesses

A suspenseful debut novel
I received an ARC of Purified to give an honest review, and WOW, did I enjoy reading this book! This new author is a terrific writer, the story had flow, the story was a little sketchy in the beginning but probably done this way on purpose to build suspense and intrigue. The character development was bang on; I was on 'Team Mason' hoping for a happy resolution for his dismal existence.
I enjoyed all the other characters as well, and could visualize the crazy Dr. Harlow and feel for Mason's friend, his wife and kids. I also had great disdain for Jill, and was not disappointed with her demise. I can't say anymore with out spoilers, so take a chance and read this book if you enjoy suspense, intrigue and a very original storyline.
All in all, a great time spent with this book and I will look for more books by this new author Brian Robert Smith.

"Purified" is a well written, suspenseful and interesting debut novel by Brian Robert Smith. To all those who knew him Mason Bushing died of cancer over a year ago. Mason escapes Dr. Harlow a 'Dr. Frankenstein' like scientist who believes he has a wonderful new drug that will allow someone to cheat death. Mason successfully escapes this mad scientist to say he is alive and did not die. Mason's wife has cashed in a nice insurance policy. Is she happy to see him? Are his friends glad he is back? Do people believe him? Dr. Harlow is also after him and not very happy about Mason's escape... .
The author gives us an original story that is well-paced with good plot twists and well-drawn characters.

This book is a wild ride for sure.
I found it a little disorienting in the beginning. It starts off a bit disjointed and leaves you asking a bunch of questions. But that is intentional, because it's how the main character feels, and it matches the plot.
About a quarter into the book you start to get some answers, and are right there beside Mason, trying to figure it out.
The plot is original and the writing is fast paced. Keeps you engaged wanting to learn more and figure out all the answers.

Mason is a simple man and doesn't deserve what happens to him. However, he is at times very naive and you may find yourself wondering just what he is thinking! Eventually, Mason gains his "freedom", but is he really free? Who would really believe his story?
This is a fast read and a real page turner with great twists and turns you will never see coming. The ending is unexpected and begs for a sequel. If you enjoy mystery/suspense with a bit of sci-fi, then this one is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
