I'm so thrilled I found this!!! I haven't read all the myths yet, but there seems to be a good collection and variety--Greek and Roman only. It's the artwork that won me over in a sweet little bookshop in Ashland, OR and I had to own this! Margaret Evans Price is one of my favorite Golden Era illustrators. This collection originally appeared in two volumes in the early part of the 1920s. I absolutely love the romance and beauty of the works and they fit so well with the tales they illuminate.

Here is a link to more of MEP's artwork featuring fairytale themes:

I don’t generally include books I read to my kids into my Goodreads challenge but this was longer than many novellas and graphic novels I’ve read. So I included it.

Review; Beautiful illustrations and an aesthetically appealing book. I realize it was printed in the 90’s and I should have expected some facets of the stories to be spun in a way that I wouldn’t like. I still internally sneered each time at the gross viewpoints. I explained the stories to my children after each one we read minus the viewpoints generally against women, etc. I need more feminist retellings of myths but geared towards kids to exist.

Bleh. The art is wonderful... for different subjects, not fitting for these at all. The stories are flat and dull; I don't think fans of Greek myth would like these tellings and I certainly didn't at all. One of the stories I do kinda like is Prometheus, but this truncates off the gory ending.

Worst of all is a terribly unfortunate reference to "Pygmies."

The illustrations in this book are so breathtaking!
The Roman names for the gods were used and since I’m new to mythology it was sort of confusing but still enjoyable!

I still have this book from my childhood. This book helped facilitate my love for mythology in my youth; the art just adds to it so nicely.

I liked this book because it has a lot of things to do with Greek and Romans mythology. I think everybody in the world would like it, unless they don't like the same things as I do.

A childhood favorite. I used to read and re-read these myths. The illustrations are beautiful too and really aided the telling.
