Gli Invisibili #1

A rontás könyve

Rate this book

It is a young adult detective novel with paranormal elements, clearly aimed at a younger readership. The story opens with an intriguing premise and a promising sense of mystery, but over time struggles to fully deliver on its initial ideas.

The novel follows twelve-year-old Douglas, who spends his summer holidays in the small town of Misty Bay. From the very beginning, strange events hint that this will not be a quiet stay. A mysterious film seen on a plane, the sudden death of a woman close to his uncle, and unsettling occurrences around town all point towards the return of the so-called Invisibles, a group of teenagers who once protected others and then vanished without a trace. The concept itself is genuinely appealing and carries a strong sense of adventure and nostalgia.

The book is very easy and quick to read, partly due to its short length and partly because of its light, informal style. The language often feels distinctly youthful, at times almost as if it were written by a peer rather than an adult author. For younger readers this may be a strength, but for older ones it can feel simplistic or even distracting. It is unclear whether some awkward phrasing and unnatural sentence constructions stem from the original text or from the translation (I read it in Polish), but the overall style frequently undermines immersion. The heavy reliance on dialogue, frequent use of onomatopoeia, and lack of descriptive passages give the story a somewhat flat and rushed feel.

Character development is one of the novel’s weaker points. While the protagonists are generally likeable, they remain largely undeveloped and difficult to distinguish from one another. Their conversations often feel forced or unnecessary, and there is little emotional depth to anchor the reader to their experiences. As a result, it is hard to become truly invested in their fates.

The plot itself is uneven. While some twists are predictable and the pacing occasionally falters, the story does manage to surprise in its later stages. The final part of the book introduces a stronger sense of tension, and several mysteries are resolved in a way that is genuinely engaging. Unfortunately, not all threads are neatly tied up, and some explanations remain vague or confusing, as if certain details were simply forgotten.

Despite its flaws, the novel has a certain charm. The themes of friendship, loss, love, death, and renewal are present, even if not explored in great depth. The idea of the Invisibles as a secret group acting quietly in the background is compelling enough to spark curiosity about the continuation of the series.

Verdict: A short, accessible mystery with a strong central idea that never quite reaches its full potential. Best suited for younger readers who enjoy light paranormal adventures. While the execution is uneven and the writing style problematic, the underlying concept and late-story twists make it interesting enough to consider reading the sequel.

Abbondano i puntini sospensivi e i punti esclamativi, spesso usati a sproposito.

Tajemnica Misty Bay to typowa młodzieżowa powieść detektywistyczna z elementami paranormalnymi.
