The Zombie Chronicles #5

Undead Nightmare

Rate this book
My name is Dean Walters and I'm eighteen years old. We had saved Val, Jackie, and Claire with the precious vials in our possession, but they weren’t 100 percent effective. Those who had taken the serum, the so-called miracle cure for zombie-itis, were easy enough to spot, since they had glowing green eyes and were suddenly equipped with night vision that would have made the average bat jealous, but that was only one side effect. Much to our dismay, the other side effect wasn’t quite so tolerable. Some cured people turned back into zombies but retained control of their reasoning, logical minds, virtually turning them into cannibals capable of thinking, calculating, stalking, and killing their victims. We’d decided to call them hybrids, and I feared that my sister, my girlfriend, and my potential future cousin-in-law were about to morph into just that. Is it only a matter of time? Does that happen to everyone who takes the serum, or are some immune to that side effect? Our only hope for answers was to go to the lab, and I hoped the answers we’d finally get would be honest—and good news.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a warning to those readers who are looking for a more violent read with gruesome descriptions of blood and gore. This is NOT that type of book. There is lots of zombie action, but this particular story is based more on the action, drama, and survival aspects.

Chrissy Peebles, a practicing nurse, has always loved reading and writing fantasy from the earliest age she can remember. She plotted every single twist she could think of during bedtime stories for her children. When her little ones begged for more adventures, she felt confident enough to let her overeager imagination and sense of humor spill out into her first novel. She lives in Ohio with her husband, two young kids, one hamster, three dwarf hamsters and cat. When she's not taking the kids to Little League soccer, basketball, or baseball, she loves to snap photos as her favorite hobby.

I really enjoyed the growing horror and suspence in the fifth instalment, with shocking new developments, and betrayal! Val, Dean & Nick continue to look for answers and safety, and the danger increases. I'm desperate to start book 6 to see whats next for the siblings. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.

I ended up buying the entire series

I'm really enjoying this series. It's exciting with barely a moment to catch your breath. After reading the first book, I bought them all

I loved each and every one of the Zombie Chronicles books to date and I can't wait to read the next one. I hope the author will keep writing them for a long time. In the fifth instalment, Dean realizes the serum isn't as stable as they previously thought. While zombies can be 'cured' for a brief time, some turn into hybrids. Getting rid of zombies is a matter of shooting them; getting rid of hybrids is a whole different issue because they retain their ability to think. They stalk their prey, devise plans and organize their attacks. I loved this twist in the story. It's nothing I've ever read or seen before and that makes the series unique to me because originality is hard to find. And the author has plenty of that. The end wasn't a cliffhanger to me but I cannot wait for the next book to come out to see where the author's taking the story.

The series is well written and full of suspense, there's no doubt about that. It's not your typical lovey-dovey fantasy with heroes and heroines with no backbone. This one has strong characters who are both likeable and have a backstory to them. Forget the usual lovey-dovey boy gets girl and they live happily ever after, this series has quite a bit of romance in it but also unpredictable action elements, twists and turns I didn't see coming. I like it when a book grips me and keeps me on the edge of my seat, and this one did just that. Absolutely a page turner I would recommend to everyone who likes their books unpredictable, action-packed and full of suspense.

I liked this book but I am ready for the series to end. I don't feel like there is much more to tell other than the antidote to the zombie virus. According to Chrissy Peebles's Facebook page, book 6 should come out at the end of August and she is planning on continuing the series. My major gripe about this series is that people and zombies don't stay dead. I don't like losing main characters but the air of danger is gone if the author keeps finding ways to bring them back. In the first book I had to put the book down and collect myself when I thought Val had died after being thrown off the balcony into a horde of zombies. I was glad she made it through but in the other books Peebles's killed other characters off except they came back as zombies then became human again only to turn into hybrids. We lost a major character in this book but I don't believe the character is really dead. Maybe The Walking Dead has spoiled me since no character on there is safe.I also didn't feel like there was much character growth in this book as in previous books. Hopefully that will be rectified in Book 6. So glad there were fewer grammatical errors in this one!

Looking forward to the 6th installment!!

Once again, Peebles has left us with a cliffhanger at the end of an action packed story. Book 5 has us following along with the group of young adults that we've grown to love as they get the "cure" to the lab and hope that the scientists are able to get the answers they need. Will they be able to save Jackie and stop Claire and Val from becoming hybrids? You'll have to read book #5 to find out!

For the very first time since I began this series I have to leave a little negative feedback. I felt that there were many parts where I was having deja vu. This book seemed quite long to me as if it was dragging on. I normally read a book in a couple days but this one took me longer. I even took a little break to read another book. :-( I think if the author were to cut out a lot of the repetitive content the book would have more quality.

That being said, it did not stop me from finishing this book or from wanting to read book #6!! I'm a big fan of this series and I'm looking forward to the next book VERY much!!

As with the other books in this series, I liked this installment as well. These books are a fun quick read with lots of excitement and zombie killing action. The writing is not phenomenal but the books are very easy to read.

The one thing that is starting to bother me is - none of the main characters ever die. I know, I get it, most people don't really want them to but how many times can you take on hordes of zombies and no one gets killed. And how long can it go on that main characters get bit or scratched by zombies only to be saved.

At the end of this book it seems that finally someone has succumbed to the zombie plague and I really hope it's not a case of we thought they were dead but no they are saved again. Honestly, if the plot can't begin to progress I won't keep reading.

Yet another great read!! The cure didn't work for some people. So now the group is with some scientists at a lab to try and get some answers. Dean goes out on a crazy mission to help a young teenager in love and nearly dies more than once. Lots of killing zombie sequences and action. I thought this was the last book and was hoping for a resolution and the cure to be fixed so they could all return home. Imagine my disappointment (and excitement!) that there's another book, it's just not out yet. Hurry up!!! I can only hold my breathe for so long!!
