Resistance is the second installment in acclaimed author Jenna Black’s YA SF romance series.
Nate Hayes is a Replica.
The real Nate was viciously murdered, but thanks to Paxco’s groundbreaking human replication technology, a duplicate was created that holds all of the personality and the memories of the original. Or...almost all. Nate’s backup didn't extend to the days preceding his murder, leaving him searching for answers about who would kill him, and why. Now, after weeks spent attempting to solve his own murder with the help of his best friend and betrothed, Nadia Lake, Nate has found the answers he was seeking...and he doesn’t like what he’s discovered.
The original Nate was killed because he knew a secret that could change everything. Thanks to Nadia’s quick thinking, the two of them hold the cards now—or think they do.
Unfortunately, neither of them fully understands just how deep the conspiracy runs.
Jenna Black is your typical writer. Which means she's an "experience junkie." She got her BA in physical anthropology and French from Duke University.
Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. Then, during her senior year at Duke, she did some actual research in the field and made this shocking discovery: primates spend something like 80% of their time doing such exciting things as sleeping and eating.
Concluding that this discovery was her life's work in the field of primatology, she then moved on to such varied pastimes as grooming dogs and writing technical documentation. She writes paranormal romance for Tor and urban fantasy for Bantam Dell.
It seems to me that this wonderful trilogy by Jenna Black isn’t getting nearly the attention it deserves. I’ve always liked her adult urban fantasy books, but I have to admit I’m enjoying her YA work even more. There are a few things that make her stand out completely and they are exactly the things I appreciate.
For one, Replica was almost completely romance-free, which allowed us to focus on more important matters like the great social injustice of Jenna Black’s world. Nate and Nadia might have been unofficially engaged since they were six years old, but a true romance between them is impossible for reasons I’d rather let you discover for yourselves. Resistance continues on the same path, with a hint of romance for Nadia this time, but nothing more than that. The priority is still their fight against the Chairman and the entire social structure he supports.
Nate and Nadia may have leverage over Nate’s father, but the Chairman isn’t without his resources, and he’s determined to make their lives miserable. Divide and conquer is his strategy when it comes to his rebellious son and his soon-to-be fiancé so he sends Nadia to a spa retread/prison and he finds a different fiancé for Nate, a silly, meek girl who doesn’t have what it takes to be the future Chairman’s wife. Nate and Nadia are pretty desperate – the change in Nadia’s status means that her reputation is ruined forever, and neither of them knows who to trust. Even Nate’s boyfriend Kurt, the boy he thought he could trust absolutely, is working for the Resistance.
I’m happy to say that Resistance doesn’t suffer from the dreaded middle book syndrome. Some very important things happen in this book, and a few jaw-dropping moments were thrown into the mix. If anything, this book is more exciting than its predecessor. The stakes are higher, the danger is greater, and both Nadia and Nate have much more to lose. Now more than ever, the lines between good and evil are blurring and its difficult for them to choose a side. The rebels may have a just cause, but their methods are questionable and their moral compass has been seriously damaged along the way, and with replicas completely out of the picture, death has become permanent and a far more frightening possibility.
The third and final book is being released in November and I for one can’t wait to get my hands on it.
MY THOUGHTS Going into this book, I was worried that I wouldn't understand what was going on. I read Replica, but it's a vague memory. Thankfully, the beginning of this book refreshed my memory enough for me to make complete sense of what is going on (I love it when books do that!).
Nate and Nadia have destroyed the Replica technology and no hold information that, if unleashed, can cause a rebellion. The Chairman, Nate's father, is determined to erase their threat and make their lives miserable. When he cancels Nadia and Nates arranged engagement, Nadia's family sends her to a retreat (basically a fancy prison for the rich) out of embarrassment. While Nate is threatened to be engaged to another girl. Thing get even worse when those close to them get their lives threatened and they realize that the conspiracies that thought they stopped my not be over. And thing might even be worse than they thought.
This book definitely doesn't have middle-book syndrome. Sure, there are slow points when Nadia is in the retreat. And I do feel like this book was leading up to the last book, but in a much more action-packed way. I'm sorry for being vague, but a lot happens in this book. So many secrets are uncovered! this book was certainly not a snooze fest! Really, Nate and Nadia just cannot get a break!
Character wise, I loved Nate and Nadia's friendship! I also very much liked how their little rebellion group growed in this book. There is a large cast of characters in this book, some good, some bad and all of them are very well-developed in the book (I was especially surprised by Nate's new fiance).
This series is very action-oriented. There is romance, but it doesn't take over the plot. Thank goodness. I do like the addition of the romances. I especially liked how Nadia got to have a romance this time (I like Nate's romance, but that was in the first book as well).
I know I seem to be saying only good things about this book, so my rating is confusing, but I really did like this book. I didn't really have any issues with it. I just have read many similar books to this one, as it follows a very common dystopian theme.
IN CONCLUSION This is a very action-packed and surprising sequel to Replica! I did enjoy reading this book and I hope to pick up the last book soon!
Having previously read Jenna Black's Replica as an ARC, I thought I would have a hard time getting back into the swing of things with Resistance, but luckily, Jenna has some helpful summaries along the way, that I recalled the gist of things.
We pretty much pick up where we left off, and if you read Replica, you know what an epic ending we had there! Nate and Nadia believe that they have beaten Chairman Hayes and that the replica process has been destroyed. They have evidence against Hayes that should he misstep, they would release the tapes that indicate his crimes. But life is not moving smoothly for Nadia or Nate for that matter.
Nadia's parents have decided to send her to a "retreat" in order to get away from it all...and the media. There are rumors floating around and none of them are good. It is in Nadia's best interests to leave the public limelight, but she is against it. She doesn't want to be locked away, for this spa, is nothing more than a fancy prison.
Nadia's life is about to get even more difficult for Nate's father is calling off their unofficial engagement and giving Nate a new fiancee. This complicates things for Nate as well, for Nadia was his best friend and who knew about his boyfriend and accepted him for who he was. Nadia was willing to live a sham of a marriage with him, but a new girl? Not so much. Plus, Agnes is a plain, meek sort of girl and Nate wants nothing to do with her. He treats her poorly, in an attempt to get her to break off their engagement.
This was a fairly fast-paced read and I was eating up the pages, desperate to see how things turned out. And wow! Resistance was truly a fantastic read! Generally, I'm not one who enjoys the sci-fi type things, but yet, this series doesn't take it to the point where it's overly complicated and hard to understand. In fact, it's quite thrilling and exciting! Replicating a human mind and putting into a clone, so to speak, so that way even if a loved one dies, he can just come back! It's truly a unique and engaging storyline and I am so very, very eager to see how this one ends!
As far as romance goes, I was surprised with what Jenna did this time! I continue to sympathize for Nadia. She was putting herself into a loveless marriage while Nate would continue to see Kurt in secret, but where does that leave Nadia? But then she meets Dante who turns out to be a spy for the resistance movement. And there were definite sparks flying between them last time! And let's just say, that those sparks turn into fireworks this go around!! Although, I can't help but have hostile feelings towards Nate, who doesn't like Nadia with Dante. He does his best to accept it, but he feels like she should be with someone else. I know he cares for her as his friend, but I really wish he would be more happy for her that she found someone, for all this time he has had Kurt. So yeah, I had me some hate Nate time, but then he would go and do something sincere and then I stopped!
This one had quite a few jaw-dropping surprises thrown in! I mean I can't even remember how many times I was just shocked! A character might do something that was surprising or you know one of those startling events would happen, ones that you don't see coming! Basically, this read was just freaking awesome! I am very glad the final book, Revolution comes out later this year in November. But sadden by the fact that it doesn't come out until November! The ending definitely leaves your jaw hanging open yet again and I am sooo looking forward to this one's conclusion! Jenna Black has done it again and wrote yet another amazingly, GREAT read!
TRIGGER WARNING: Threat of sexuality "reprogramming".
Why is this novel's society advanced enough to create replicas of particular people, yet the Chairman's Heir's sexuality has to be kept secret? Supposedly because of the financial/political benefits of an arranged marriage, and then possible heirs, but I'm not entirely convinced.
Anyway, why did I wait so long to read this Resistance? Possibly because Book 1, Replica, is worth five stars, and I worried this wouldn't have the same quality? I shouldn't have been concerned, because Resistance is another five-star read in this amazing trilogy. Early on in the book I had a theory, and it turns out to be correct, but that didn't stop me loving the book, anyway.
And yes, plot convenience seems to trump realism when teens easily overpower their adult adversaries in physical combat, and get away with sneaking around on "sanctuary"/"retreat" grounds.
And Nate Hayes is SO BLOODY ANNOYING in this book, though his opinion later changes somewhat. Can I forgive him because he shows character development by novel's end? I won't entirely, because his thoughts and behaviour in regards to Agnes Belinski are absolutely appalling. The trilogy's world is rather classist, yet what bothers Executive teen Nate the most? Someone who's "not beautiful" (which is the nicest thing said about Agnes's appearance in this novel) and lacks social skills. Oh, but then Nate figures it's good Agnes is meek, because she'll just go along with whatever he says.
Not cool, Nate. Not cool.
By the end of the story, Nate comes to the conclusion that Agnes isn't so bad after all, compared to the novel's villains, but still... However, Nadia Lake is much nicer about, and towards, Agnes - though this might be counted as Nadia's "save the cat" moment (in scriptwriting terms). Yes, she criticises Agnes's looks, outfits, and behaviour, but only silently. Outwardly, Nadia is much nicer to her.
But Agnes's ill-fitting and unflattering clothes don't make sense, anyway. She's an Executive, so surely her family could afford a stylist, or for someone else to provide her wardrobe? Maybe her lack of style is just another thing that Nate can hold against her.
Admittedly, Nate has reason to not like Agnes (they're being forced into an arranged engagement), but still...that's their parents' fault; not her doing.
These criticisms aside, I loved the book and highly recommend this trilogy.
Resistance (Replica # 2) picks up right where Replica (Replica # 1) left off. The series protagonists Nate Hayes, and Nadia Lake truly believe they won and now hold leverage over the Chairman of Paxco, who is also Nate's father. But, it that were truly the case, why would we need a sequel? See, the Chairman isn't one to go quietly into that good night. Nope. He is determined to ruin Nate and Nadia's happiness by dividing and then conquering them into ruination. But, nothing will prepare you for what happens at the end of this book.
What? The second book is better than the first!?! Five out of five stars In the sequel to REPLICA, Jenna Black drops us right where we left off. Nate and Nadia know that their small battle was nothing compared to the overall war they are waging with Nate’s father. They are also painfully aware of how precarious their current situation truly is. Nadia knows that she has to protect her sister, and Nate is desperate to protect not just Bishop but Nadia too. This sets the stage for the next thrilling installment of the series. Jenna once again leverages transitioning between Nadia and Nate’s point of view to create the suspense that makes it impossible to put the book down. The overall pace allows for character connection. There is also more focus on the relationships between the characters and character growth. Nadia and Nate are not the same people introduced in REPLICA. Throughout RESISTANCE both of them display how their experiences have changed them.
The best part of any second book is less world and character building and more story telling. That is exactly what Jenna does in this book. She does introduce new characters, but only in an effort to move the story long and help gain momentum throughout the book. There are predictable moments, but there are still surprises especially the end. It will leaving you begging for the third and final book.
A sequel that I liked better than the first? Doesn't happen often, but did with this one. I'll be reviewing the book on my blog later tonight. Although I can't actually post it until closer to the publishing date.
This book started a lot slower than I expected. Poor Nadia is rushed off to an "executive retreat" to keep the press away, but she is of course worried to be out of touch and what the Chairman will do. Nate is blackmailed into a new marriage agreement which leads Nadia's family to send her to a more secure retreat. Dante and Kurt are still around and Gerri wants Nadia to share the secret.
Wait for the final book to see how it is all solved.
I knew it!! I knew Dorothy was really Thea!! But it was a very good, believable twist.
The action was again very fast-paced in this book. When Nadia was sent to the second retreat, with more security, etc., I was worried that the author would spend a lot of time there establishing the setting before allowing her to somehow escape. But happily, that was just a quick way-stop on the way to more action. Although I do wonder about the other "resident/prisoner" who was Ellie's friend. It would be nice if she appeared again in the final book of the trilogy, because her back story was interesting and we didn't get to see very much of her.
I was very surprised that Dorothy/Thea actually killed off the Chairman. Not because I couldn't understand her motivations, but because it seemed so easy. Now all Nate and Nadia have to do is show the world that Dorothy/Thea is not a real human being, and people will be likely to believe them. Because even with the corrupt society that exists in this book, people are still not going to be comfortable with having an AI be in control of them with an eternal Chairmanship of the most powerful state. At least that's the hope.
Also...poor Gerri!! I did not see that coming. And was it just her alone who died, or also her husband and children? I was a little confused about the situation there. And was it an accident ordered by the Chairman... or by Dorothy/Thea? Was the Chairman about to be a redeemable character after all? Was he not so bad as we were led to believe earlier? Should we feel bad that he's dead?
This book leaves me with lots of questions. I will be reading the next one, Revolution, right away.
Happy reading everyone!

What I find incredibly interesting about the dystopian world of Replica is how detailed it is yet still very rooted in the present.
The continuing story of Nate, Nadia, Kurt, and Dante continues in book 2. The fallout from their upheaval with Mosely and Thea at the end of book 1 continues to haunt Nate and Nadia. Nate is presented with a new wife-to-be and Nadia is sent to a minimum security "retreat" for her mental health.
The ending was fairly predictable but the story was still a fast read. I'd rather have less predictability, less far out there coincidences, and more description of Sanctuary and Agnes.
This book was just as good as the first one. Great continuation of the characters I had already come to love, while also adding in new characters in a way that added to the story and created plot twists. As soon as Dorthy came into the novel, I knew it was Thea, but I didn’t realize she had the chairman under her control now that she had a body. I had assumed the chairman had a hand in that process. I can’t wait to read the final book in the series.

Found this book at a used book sale. Little did I know that it was part of a series!!!!! It was well written with good character development. But very predictable. Don't know how many books are in this series.
This is number 2 of three and the only one I've read. It was well written cause I did it in 2 sittings. Really nice story and will have to try for the 1st and 3rd.
Solid second book. I think I liked it more than the first. I might be dumb, bit the twist actually surprised me. And the I felt dumb how obvious it was.
You will have to excuse me for not explaining everything that I want to in this review. I don’t want to give any spoilers for this book or the previous book in the series. There is a lot that can’t be said about this book without spoiling some of book one.
After finishing book one of the Replica series, I was very excited to start Resistance. We start pretty much where we left off in Replica. Nate and Nadia learn who killed Nate (he was brought back as a Replica in book one). They’re in a very uncertain truce with the corrupted leaders in Paxco. The two kids don’t know how deep they dug themselves in. Nate and Nadia had thought they had worked everything out, but boy were they wrong.
Towards the end of Replica, Nadia was arrested and taken to Riker’s Island. It was her quick thinking that she was able to talk her way out and was completely exonerated, but as with anyone with a celebrity status that she has, the media wouldn’t let it go. Her mother decides that it would be best for Nadia to go to an “Executive retreat”. These are supposed to be for them to relax and unwind. In truth, it is a place to hide from the media. No access to the outside world, almost like a fancy prison.
There is a new character brought into the mix in Agnes. She is the daughter of a chairman of another state. Her family is invited to Paxco to work out an alliance between the two states. Agnes is not a pretty girl and has a very bland personality. Nate takes an instant dislike to her. He isn’t shy about showing it. Agnes is not new to being treated in this fashion and is willing to endure it, if it is best for her state. She is very loyal in that sense. Nadia, on the other hand, was very corgel with Agnes and didn’t fault Agnes for the position that Agnes is put into, no matter how much it makes things hard on Nadia.
I really enjoyed this story just as much as the first book. I love seeing how Nate and Nadia continue to stand together. They might not be romantically involved (though Nate does have some jealousy issues), they stand strong together. I think they would make a great ruling pair when they got older. I love how Nadia really stands up and approaches and befriends Agnes, even with Nadia in such a bad situation. Nadia does have a little more of a romantic role with Dante. I’m expecting to see it come to fruition in book three.
The series continues to be action packed with political twists and turns. All of the main characters in this one have a hard time in this story. The Resistances ends, not so much as a cliffhanger, but with all of these kids in a very tight spot. I’m very excited to get to the third and final book in this series. I want to see how these kids are able to pull this off and save the state of Paxco.
Resistance picks up almost immediately where Replica left off. Nate and Nadia think they’ve stopped Nate’s father and the artificial intelligence he created from harming any more people. Sadly nothing is ever that simple. Now Nadia is sending her to a retreat out of embarrassment with no connection to the outside world. When Nate finds out Nadia has been put away and his father tells him he’ll be marrying someone else or else he’ll have his sexuality reprogramed. Now it’s up to him and Dante to help her.
Nate is a complete jerk in this book somewhat. I get why he was upset and it’s not completely out of character since he’s more or less a spoiled brat, but I also felt he grew a lot throughout this story. He gets engaged to a girl named Agnes who I guess is unattractive in a lot of ways. She’s shy and definitely an easy mark for him throughout the book. Nate ends up working with Dante a lot throughout the book and we get to see his boyfriend Kurt again. I definitely love the quips between the three boys in this story since they’re all so jaded and sarcastic.
Nadia is a surprisingly strong character, which is one of the main reasons I ended up liking Replica so much. I wouldn’t usually associate privileged and powerful with strong YA female leads, but Nadia has definitely had a hard go at it. Now she’s stuck in an institution and her life is becoming a downward spiral. Getting news of her broken engagement, her family, and about Nate’s dark secrets aren’t easy for her, but she comes out of this book stronger than ever.
I seriously enjoyed this book a whole lot. I’m nervous about ending this series since I hate endings, but I have a feeling it’ll be epic.
Restistance definitely upped the romance level up a notch. I enjoyed the growing affection between Nadia and Dante. Seriously in my mind Dante is ubber sexy and I’m excited that Nadia will have someone who cares about her.
Oh Agnes. So we’re supposed to not like her because she’s taking Nadia’s place, but I like her a lot. Agnes and Nadia really get along when they meet and I liked how we get to fully understand her character through Nadia’s eyes and from the perspective of a girl who is just doing what needs to be done for her family.
Overall great book, I love the characters, the story, and all the mystery and secrets surrounding this book! Can’t wait for Revolution!
Against her will, Nadia is sent to a "spa" to keep the heat off her family and to their family name. Nate doesn't know that Nadia is in seclusion, and Nadia knows that she is useless when the real battle is outside... Until an ally steps in to inform her about the new developments in Nate's life. Nate, on the other hand, finds himself in a stickier situation, what with politics and love and familial duties and ties entangling themselves into a web where he finds a bigger conspiracy that no one is really quite prepared for.
If you think Replica (the first book) was pretty good, Resistance is even better. Replica only skimmed the surface of the conspiracy, so we were really impressed at how bigger Black makes this ruse out to be without sacrificing too much credibility. While things may have come to a certainly roundabout way, both Nadia's and Nate's characters have grown and their resolve is no longer as shaky and conflicted as before.
We like that not only has Nadia cemented herself as a kickbutt girl (We knew the girl had it in her since book one!) in Resistance, but Nate isn't so much as the hang-back-and-let-Nadia-worry-about-it Nate here. He's actually testing his limits and control, which makes us proud of him.
Another thing we have to love about Resistance is the pacing, there's never a dull moment in this book and it's full of action packed scenes. Nate and Nadia have matured a lot and have to make a lot of hard decisions. We totally approve of Black's willingness to put her characters through one catastrophe after the other.
In Resistance, everything is falling into place - the plot, the characters, the conspiracy. It's an interesting roller coaster of suspense and action with romance throw in. Plus points to that because it's not forced at all and we kind of wish that Nadia's romance with this spy flourishes. (And we're pretty grateful that the revolution isn't run by a bunch of teenagers this time.)
I received this book as part of the the First Reads Giveaway program. It is the second book in a trilogy revolving around two teens, Nadia Lake and Nathaniel Hayes. Both of them are part of the upper class "executives" in a corporate state named Paxco, which occupies present day New York. I have read and genuinely liked the first book of this series (Replica). I also really wanted to like this book. I can't say that I did enjoy reading it.
The main reason I didn't like this book is that it was completely predictable. As someone who likes mystery books, I found myself guessing every plot twist chapters before they had happened. I had already guessed the ending's big "reveal" at the very introduction of the character Dorothy Hayes. The writing was too transparent. I love twists at the end of books, but this book couldn't pull it off.
Another reason I didn't enjoy this novel was the fact that its story progression was painfully slow. I almost stopped reading it within the first quarter of the book. The only thing that kept me going was that I wanted to find out where the author was taking these characters that I liked in the first novel. It felt at times like the author was dragging out the novel in order to reach a respectable length. I can appreciate a slow burning novel, and have enjoyed many in the past. However, when you compare "Resistance" to its predecessor "Replica", the change of pace is very noticeable. The second half of the novel also changes pace again back to that of "Replica". It feels like two separate short stories at times.
For those two reasons, I am giving the novel two stars. I did enjoy the second half of the novel so I wouldn't be comfortable giving the novel only one star. Hopefully Jenna Black can round out the trilogy with a strong final novel that matches the first book.
My Thoughts: See what is says up there? Up on my review policy? NO ROMANCE BOOKS. However in the interest of broadening my horizons, I decided to request a semi-romancy book from Raincoast. So thank you to them, for giving me this awesome ARC. And no, I was not given any compensation in exchange for this review. Now my thoughts!
Resistance was arguably among one of the most amusing dystopias I've read this year. What made it different? Well, for one it didn't go chasing after The Hunger Games's heels. Jenna Black did her own thing - a more lighthearted rebellion story - and it worked.
From the beginning, Nate and Nadia were up against tremendous odds, something that would make a regular 17-21 year old quiver in his/her boots. I felt their reactions, complicated relationship, and partner dynamic were believable. What I didn't find believable, was their lack of any physical injury, despite the people around them being shot, killed, etc. Though this is a minor issue, it nagged on my conscious.
Speaking of injury, I'm very glad the action bits didn't consume Resistance, pushing all other aspects of the novel aside. Dante, Kurt, Nadia, Angie were all good characters, and each of them were given their own chance to shine. There is almost a character for everyone within these white pages, seeing that Paxco/Debasement modestly displayed a diversity of personalities and sexualities.
"Executives who went to upstate retreats generally didn’t leave, nor did they receive many visitors, having disgraced their families and friends with whatever scandal had caused them to enter the retreat in the first place. "- Official Quote, via Tor
Although some specific sections of Resistance are sketchy, overall, I was entertained. The Chairman was badass, in his own cruel/flawed way, and that ending. DAT ENDING. I will say no more. :>
Gaining the upper hand on Chairman Hayes at the end of book one turns out to be a short-lived victory for Nadia and Nate - they may have achieved the destruction of the Replica process and have the incriminating recordings that guarantee their survival as well as that of their loved ones, but the future looks anything but rosy. With Nadia locked away in a retreat cut off from the outside world and Nate being forced into a new marriage arrangement that will completely ruin Nadia in society and leave everyone involved miserable, the Chairman seems to have them both firmly back under his thumb. Dante and Bishop, their contacts in the Resistance movement, might be able to help in return for information, but danger surrounds them all and only increases with every step they take... Last year, Replica took me by surprise and ended up one of my favourite books of 2013. Going into the sequel, I therefore had high hopes and expectations - tempered with a little dread, because what if it's nowhere near as good as expected? Turns out I needn't have worried: Resistance more than lives up to the promise of the first book, upping the ante on action, suspense and romance alike and raising the stakes before leaving you feverishly looking up the release date of the trilogy's conclusion. (It's November. Why is November so far away?!)
This is book 2 in the Replica trilogy by Jenna Black. I unfortunately didn't know that before reading it or I may not have read it as I do not care for starting a trilogy on the second book. I thought the story was good. I especially liked the fact that this is a young adult novel with a gay main character and with the writing style this is approached in a nonchalant way. The fact that the main character is gay means nothing to the story, of course, there are complications that can arise from this fact but this is not a focal point of the story. It is merely a fact and I personally feel that is a fantastic step in the right direction where equal rights and society views begin. The story is futuristic with an old school feudal system which is interesting to say the least.
I have not read the first novel, however, there was quite a lot of reflection on the first novel which did allow me to get a good idea of what happened previously. I would like to read the first and last novel. This did leave at a cliffhanger ending and I would like to find out what happens. The characters are well developed. The story, despite sounding quite complicated, was actually very simple to understand considering I didn't read the first book and have an excellent understanding of the story. I really cannot advise reading "Resistance" until you have read "Replica," which is the first book in the series but if you decided to read "Replica" and "Resistance" I can tell you Resistance is very good.
This actually moved the story forward and raised the stakes, instead of just idling and waffling and being filler.
So in this one, Nate's dad decides to arrange a new marriage for him with a mousy ugly girl named Agnes. In the meantime, Nadia's parents have her locked up in some sort of "retreat" so she can't embarrass them anymore. While away, Nadia is almost killed. Agnes, Kurt, Dante, Nate and Nadia are now on the run and have made blackmail tapes that prove to be essentially useless. Oh, and Nadia's sister Gerri is dead.
OH AND NATE'S DAD IS DEAD NOW TOO AND EVERYTHING THINKS IT WAS NATE AND NADIA BECAUSE THEA HAS CREATED A DNA-RELATED BODY AND IS TAKING OVER THE COMPANY WHAT WHAT WHAT.
I'm SUPER excited for the next book! They have to figure out how to clear their names. They have to shut down Thea. Maybe create a Replica of Nate's dad to return everything to status quo... We gotta figure out what's going to happen romance-wise. I mean, I suppose Nadia and Nate could get married and keep Kurt and Dante on the side... but that doesn't seem fair to Nadia. Although, because her parents are such greedy bitches, she might be stuck with this anyways. Which wouldn't be TERRIBLE. I dunno.
Again, I find that the cover is too "generic sci-fi" and doesn't really fit the content, but meh.
Language - R (152 swears, 8 "f"), Sexual Content - R; Violence - PG-13 Nadia and Nate thought they were safe from the Chairman's wrath, and the Chairman couldn't believe that he wouldn't end up getting his way. Turns out both parties were wrong. How far can the battle of wits and intimidation go before it starts hurting innocent people? While the premise is still very intriguing to me, Resistance was harder to read than Replica was for two reasons. First of all, the conflict was very confusing. While readers know that Thea didn't die, there is a development in Resistance that did not have enough set up during the story before the plot twist was revealed. Secondly, the sexual content got worse. I didn't like putting up with it during the Replica and I really didn't like dealing with it in this one. Those scenes did not have much--if anything--to add, so that content was unnecessary. Reviewed for https://kissthebook.blogspot.com/
Replica series by Jenna Black is dystopian/science-fiction YA that offer a different approach in its plot. Like some other similar genre books, the main story is about two teenagers againts their ruling government. But unlike other dystopian YAs, the two main characters are not in love with each other. At least not in a romantic way. And the latter-at least for me-makes the story even more appealing.
I like Replica a lot, and for Resistance... I LOVE it.
Nate becomes more mature and more responsible, and (finally) Nadia has someone she can rely on to. Although there aren't as many conflicts as Replica, Resistance gives enough suspense to squirm about. And the ending... OMYGODTHEENDING! It's frustating and wicked yet I couldn't imagine any more perfect alternative.
I just can't wait for the third instalment to comes out. >_<
I LOVE Nadia. She continues to be incredibly awesome and the most likeable character in the series. She is smart, strong and compassionate. Not a fan of Kurt Bishop, mostly because he can't see how awesome Nadia is - yet has no problem loving the rather selfish and arrogant (but improving) Nate. Still enjoying Nate & Nadia's relationship and how they love one another. They have spent years being the others only real friend. I am happy Nadia has Donovan and like how she isn't charging full steam ahead but wants to find out if what they have is real or just a result of him being her only support at a time when she really needs someone. I like how everyone looks to Nadia for her approval once Nate comes up with his plan - this is how it should be.
This book was a whirlwind. The whole story takes place in less then a week (I think so) and SO MUCH HAPPENS!!!! Its such an emotional rollercoaster that has so much baggage it can't all be worked out on a weekend getaway. This book was almost an information overload, and it almost stressed me out because of all the crazy things that happened. I got way too emotionally invested in this book. I read the last half of this book in one sitting, because I had to know what was going to happen. My only peeve is the ending, and I am most likely nit-picking on it. It just felt rushed, a little lack luster. And the rat-bastard deserved much worse. Ugh!
I really want to like this series, but honestly, I'm struggling. Nate is growing on me, and the Nadia/Dante relationship is making more sense. I was happy to see Nadia take charge of things more when she had to, and Agnes is finally showing some backbone. But there were so many things that I saw coming, that were predictable and made me want to scream, "Oh my gosh, it's so obvious," as the characters were trying to figure it out. The end is absolutely set up for another book - I just have to decide if I'm going to read it or not. We'll see.
I loved this book! Very rarely is Book 2 in a series as good as the first one. I think I even liked this one a little better. It starts right where book 1 (Replica) left off and it is action from start to finish....I started the next book the moment I finished the last word. A lot happens and secrets are revealed! Nate and Nadia will have their hands full getting out of the surprise ending of this book. I can't wait to find out!!!!
