Very short, but vivid and emotional. This is the book for a gloomy winter afternoon when you're alone, there is only the sound of raindrops on the rooftop and the window panes. Outside, the trees are boney and dark against the grey sky. Dogs don't bark, cars don't run, people don't talk. Don't get yourself a mug of any hot beverage, because you'll only leave it going cold. Don't text anyone before reading, because when they text back you won't reply them. Don't play any music, because you won't know what's going on. Don't plan to do anything serious in the evening, because you won't be able to focus.
A wonderful story. Brilliant writing style. All you have to do now is to find the right day, the right moods to read it. Never read it under the sun, at the beach, while your kids are laughing or crying; never read this one when you only want to pretend to be busy.

Mỗi khi buồn, tôi đều đọc lại cuốn này. Không, xem tranh là chủ yếu. Nó đẹp, cô đơn, và đúng là tiếng lòng của biết bao tâm hồn mắc kẹt trong thành phố khổng lồ này.
Ngã rẽ nào cũng là lựa chọn, đã là lựa chọn, không ai tránh khỏi tổn thương.
Ngày dài tôi ngắm mây, ngắm nắng, ngắm mặt hồ và dòng người qua lại như biển. Cứ tự hỏi, biết bao con người, tôi đi qua không gặp lại nữa.
Chỉ vì lựa chọn cho riêng mình?

que os uniu uma paixão súbita.
É bela esta certeza,
mas a incerteza é mais bela ainda.
Julgam que por não se terem encontrado antes,
nada entre eles nunca ainda se passara.

algum “desculpe” num grande aperto de gente?

Muito os admiraria
saber que desde há muito
se divertia com eles o acaso.
Ainda não completamente preparado
para se transformar em destino para eles,
aproximou-os e afastou-os,
barrou-lhes o caminho
e, abafando as gargalhadas,
lá seguiu saltando ao lado deles.
Houve marcas, sinais,
que importa se ilegíveis.
Haverá talvez três anos
ou terça-feira passada,
certa folhinha esvoaçante

"DESENCUENTROS" es una historia romántica. Sigo pensando que este tipo de tramas son para mí, porque amo la teoría del HILO INVISIBLE. Amo las novelas gráficas que nos cuentan un romance así de bonito y con mucho destino.
En esta historia tenemos a nuestros protagonistas que viven PARED CON PARED, pero nunca se han topado.
Ella va a la izquierda y él a la derecha.
Caminan por los mismos sitios, juegan con los mismos animales y ríen con lo mismo.
TAN CERCA Y TAN LEJOS.
En un mundo de cosas imposibles, se terminan topando y pasan un día mágico.
Ambos conectan de una manera tan linda.
Están destinados.
No obstante, ese día llueve y ya no logran ver más...
AY, es una historia muy bonita, romántica y con ilustraciones muy hermosas.
Acabo de enterarme que adaptaron la historia a PELÍCULA y ahora necesito verla.
Sabe lo épico que será.

I thought Love was only a game of the naked mischievous baby boy named Cupid who loved to shoot his arrow to bring two strangers to each other and make them fall in love. But sometimes, there's something that Cupid can't do even though his love arrow hit, like two people in this Jimmy Liao's Turn Left, Turn Right.
I remember the film adapted from this book that I watched long time ago. The movie with the same name had made me so emotional, and after that, I did think a lot about fate, how we meet every single one in our life, and how amazing the life is to bring people together. When I knew that the film was adapted from a book, I knew I had to buy it no matter what. Then I knew Jimmy Liao and almost immediately deeply madly fall in love with him and his works. "Turn Left, Turn Right" is truly a beautiful book with telling pictures. Jimmy Liao told a very passionate and lovely, and a little bit sad story about two people who never change their behaviours so almost miss the love of their life. But life always has its own way to bring together two people who belongs together. It's a worth reading and crying story ever.

"She used to go left, he is used to go right.” These two people who turn left and right seems like they will never meet. But the Earth is round, at the end of this world, there will eventually be one day that they will meet. If we meet outside by chance, and if we never mention each other's house, then maybe we won't meet again, and never find out that we actually lives next door.
The story begin with:
They’re both convinced
that a sudden passion joined them
Such certainly is beautiful,
but uncertainty is more beautiful still.
I wonder what is the author’s mood when she wrote this story. This is a sad story about “lost", and also a touching story about “meet”. In this crowded city, how many people are there that might be in love but just passing by. At the moment when the two lines meet, they rush toward their own direction, without even a greeting. On the busy street, riproaring moment, there may be a person who you are looking for, but everything is so uncertain. There might be a little regret when can not meet immediately, but it was at the same time full of expectation.

Desencuentros es un álbum maravilloso y muy bello, que cuenta la historia de dos personas perdidas en el mundo que encuentran al fin a su otra mitad. Dos personas que, por un juego macabro del destino, se ven obligadas a sufrir la pérdida de algo que jamás logró forjarse del todo, algo que quedó estancado a la mitad de un camino que tal vez no consigan recorrer juntos, pero que está ahí, oscuro, vacío y aterrador. ¿Serán capaces de cruzarlo? ¿Podrán dejar su rutina a un lado, desafiar al destino, y seguir los dictados de su corazón?

Lo compré porque hace años vi la película "Turn Left, Turn Right" y la amé tanto que incluso la traduje para que alguien pudiera verla. Cuando vi este libro y me enteré que fue de dónde salió aquella, no dudé.

Foi uma leitura que não me agradou. De muito fácil leitura, contudo, não me permitiu criar empatia com as personagens principais (no caso, um homem e uma mulher) e o enredo não me cativou.
Creio que a narrativa tenta transmitir a moral de que as coisas na vida nem sempre correm como gostaríamos, mas pela forma como foi escrita e ilustrada acabou por me lembrar a um filme romântico, com uma data de coincidências e azares que se vão sucedendo ao longo da história. Não encontrei grande profundidade na história em si nem nas personagens.
Creio que a narrativa tenta transmitir a moral de que as coisas na vida nem sempre correm como gostaríamos, mas pela forma como foi escrita e ilustrada acabou por me lembrar a um filme romântico, com uma data de coincidências e azares que se vão sucedendo ao longo da história. Não encontrei grande profundidade na história em si nem nas personagens.

This has been on my wishlist for years. I finally used OKC's wonderful ILL, and they found it for me... from Georgetown Univ. in D.C.! Lovely. Not quite a graphic novel, but the focus is on the art - the text is short, almost like a poem.
The art, gosh. It looks like simple watercolored (?) drawings, but they're enchanting. Many are completely surreal, and not just the dreams. Most add a lot to the story if examined more deeply than just the superficial 'moving the plot along' view - consider for example the details of the characters' apartments and how their respective decor is both similar & different.
I do admit that I'm glad I didn't buy it. ILL is so much better for my budget. And I don't believe I want to reread this. But I do recommend it to anyone who wants a creative, literary, artistic love story.

Ayyy ~~ llevaba mucho tiempo queriendo leer a Jimmy Liao, y para mi sorpresa estaba en la biblioteca mas "piola" de mi querido puerto (No subestimen las bibliotecas públicas). Adoro la novela gráfica, sobre todo cuando son historias sumamente dulces <3

Desencuentros es un libro nostálgico sobre dos personas que viven en el mismo edificio, y que aún siendo vecinos, jamás logran encontrarse. Con una excepción.
"Es como si fueran amantes que no hubieran podido verse durante años"
Tiene la prosa poética característica de Jimmy Liao, que logra tratar temas de soledad, nostalgia y tristeza majestuosamente. Sus ilustraciones, como siempre, cuentan una historia paralela que aporta nuevas perspectivas a la palabra escrita.
No lo considero un libro infantil, sino para adultos dadas las temáticas (y eventualmente el final). Pero aún así, siempre, siempre , recomendaré los libros de este autor.

lo cual provoca en la gente una insólita melancolía,
de modo que a menudo a los caminantes
les asaltan las ganas de echarse a llorar."

Tan real y crudo como la vida misma, el ilustrador transmite mucho en muy pocas palabras, las ilustraciones hablan pos si solas y están cargadas de mensajes para hacerte reflexionar. Me ha encantado.

Oigan que bonito libro. Me enternecí mucho. Es el primer librito que conozco de Liao y se me hizo tan tan tierno.
Hace un año (2023) salió 'Fallen leaves", peli de Aki Kaurismäki, y si les gusto el libro vean la peli.
