Am I the only one who disliked the ending of this series? I have fussed about it with whomever would listen, and everyone seems to agree with me here. The entire series tells us that the Senka Maiden (Misao) will die while giving birth to her "demon" child. It also tells us that it would be difficult to change this fate, so it is pretty much set in stone. Then, we are presented with this crappy ending, where all Kyo has to do to make her live after/during the birth is to "breathe life into her". Yeah, I am very disappointed. I didn't want her dead, because I hate her or anything....as I did actually like her most the time. I just wanted what they kept saying would happen to happen. ------------------------ This volume was provided to me as an eManga by VIZ Media, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own. -------------------------- P.S. - I am very glad this series is over. While I liked most the story, the insta-pregnancy and the lies about the ending to come were both major disappointments.
I am so sad to see Misao and Kyo's story end. This is one of my favorite series! I loved every single second. I was happy with the resolution <3 The art was beautiful. The characterization remained consistent throughout the series. It's bittersweet. Kyo will always be my favorite manga boyfriend :-p
I really enjoyed the ending of this series. Everything appeared to be wrapped up nicely. This volume opens with the fact they still haven't found the key to saving Misao but Kyo eventually comes to terms with it. In fact, a lot of this volume involves Kyo doing that though I found myself feeling a bit impatient with it after all Misao is the one who is going to die. And Misao also comes to terms with her impending death too. In this volume, Misao becomes the emotionally strong one while Kyo just goes to pieces. Still a very tender volume with a lot going on. A lot of humor too. Kyo's father meets Misao's mom. I have to say that the ending was very satisfying though I know I've missed a lot of nuances since my Japanese is still not on the level.
This series is over! I read a long manga series and completed it in under a month! Yay! I thought the ending was perfect for the series and I was worried because the cover looks like it's going to end in tragedy, but it doesn't. I wouldn't have been able to handle that. I am also just a huge fan of how Sakurakouji draws kids and Misao and Kyo's little boy was so freaking cute. Overall, the series is good. It has some really weak moments in the earlier volumes, but it eventually hits its pacing and stride.
It should have ended after volumes 13/14, the story could have been tied up quite nicely there. Most of the books were either 3 or 3.5Stars (with a few 4 stars) but Black Bird 15 onwards just went downhill - I only really finished the series because I’m stubborn.
No. Y ¡No!
After finishing up this series, I can sort of say that I'm glad I stuck through it. I would rate the series, overall, 3.5/5 stars. Here's why.
(TL;DR: I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys romance and an above average plotline with superb character development and beautiful art.)
Plot: 3/5 stars. Honestly, it's not the most unique plot. If anything, it resembeled Twilight, with it's overprotective male and pretty useless female. The idea of the human mother dying while giving birth to her demon child is not a new concept. However, as the plot continued on, it did have some plot twists that I didn't see coming. If you can look past the plotline as well as Kyo's overbearing nature over Misao, this series isn't a bad read. To me, the ending was endearing and heartfelt, so it was an enjoyable read in the end. It left me feeling satisfied.
Characters: 4.5/5 stars. I love, love each of the characters within this novel. They develop quickly over the entire series, and each of their personalities shine through in the last book. When I was first introduced to the Daitengu, I sort of lumped them all together, not thinking that they would have much of a role within the series. I was wrong. Aside from Buzen, each one of the Daitengu has a well thought out back story. Even other minor characters like Ayame and Tadanobu had pasts that were very well tied with the plot. I was content with Misao's character development as well. In the beginning, I really did not like her because she was so incredibly clingy and useless. Demons were attacking her left and right and all she had for protection was Kyo, which them amplified his role as the superior male protagonist. Thankfully, the demon attacks dropped down to nothing and she began to stand up for herself against people who would take advantage of her. Her caring nature is something to be noted as well, which juxtaposed Kyo's brash one. Overall, I fell in love with the characters and there wasn't any one character in which I thought was underdeveloped.
Art: 4/5 stars. I'm sorry, but I'm a woman. Everyone was very well drawn, especially the men. *__* I thought that Black Bird had the proper amount of somber, comedy, and violence to satisfy me, at least. The art for each chapter is very good, and the author stays true to the traditional Japanese wear that the demon clans wear. My review for this section will have to be short, because I'm really not an expert in this category and I only really wrote about what pleased me.
Now in the series you know that Misao will die after giving birth because that was what it said happed to the other Senka Maidens in the past. in this book you finally see Senka Maiden (Misao Harada) give birth. As she lies there dying in an attempt to save her he (Kyo Usui)gives some of his life to her. This is where I start to get confused, so she dies then she is bright back to life and now her lags are paralyzed because she gave birth to her half demon/human son? Uhmm this doesn't make any since. and no mater how many times I read this I still don't get it. I just hope I'm not the only one.

I have indifferent feelings about this one. On one hand, I absolutely hated that the entire volume was just fan service. But on the other, it's wholesome and feels like a good ending to a story. A lot of manga just falls off at the end and this one gives a clear conclusion.
Well, this was one of the first mangas that I’ve read when I started getting into the manga world. There are about 7 other mangas a bit similar to this one, and I will definitely cover them soon. They are in the category mature and smut (erotica), but they are still the best.
But let’s get back on track. This manga has absolutely everything, starting with comedy and ending with tragedy, having a lot of supernatural doesn’t seem bad too. You just can’t not love the main characters. Even the villains have your support. I mean it, some of the villains are really amazing. The story is about a young girl – Misao, who can see ayakashi. Let me explain, what ayakashi are, in plain English – demons, but take it a but further, Japanese culture demons. If you are not very common with them, do not worry, everything is explained, and maybe if you are like me a sucker for mythology, you’ll start researching about them.
The story is very interesting. I focused on love between Misao and Kou. Guess I forgot to tell you who Kou is. This guy is a demon and he’s head over heels in love with Misao. He’s a big pervert, but you just can’t hate him. What kind of demon is he? He is what is called a tengu, a demon with the wings of a raven. As I have already stated, the plot of this manga is very interesting. It has many twists and turns, and the characters are shown from both good and bad sides. The manga is full of romance, however, there are a lot of moments where you just can’t not cry. You find yourself laughing at many moments, but there will be a lot of tragic one too. The last 2-3 volumes will make you cry a lot.
You will love Misao a lot. She is a character, which makes you smile a lot. You feel her every emotion, her joy, her sorrow, her expectations. The last two volumes, where she finds that she is pregnant are amazing. They will just tear your heart out, and you can’t just side with one character. You understand both Kou’s POV as well as Misao’s the author tears open the hearts and minds of the characters and presents everything to us in a manner as if to say: What would you have done if you were them?
I hope you will find some time to read this manga. It is quite long, however, as soon as you start it, you won’t be able to stop. Enjoy it to its fullest. The art is really great especially when the author is drawing the guys. Yep, you’ll drool on them a lot. Find yourself engrossed in the world of ayakashi: a world full of love, betrayal, joy and sorrow. If you have already read this amazing manga or you are about to start, don’t forget to share your thoughts bellow! Stay tuned for more reviews and promos. Happy reading!
I loved this manga series, although Misao didn't have to cry so much and the plot was really reaching sometimes. I love all the characters and enjoyed all the special stories. Can't believe I didn't read this one sooner.
Wow I can’t believe it had come to an end. I got the feels for Kyo and Misao- I was trying to mentally prepare myself for the moment when she would die but I was so happy that Soh has both his parents with him ❤️.
I love how, until the very end, Kyo lives Misao above all else and that really warmed my heart. It also made me feel happy to see how close, and how much of a family the Tengu clan were. I thought it was a great choice to use Jiro’s POV and seeing the story from another perspective.
Thank you for this experience.

Love isn't completely about pureness or innocence but the want ... every gesture of the body and its uttering is what makes it all make sense. Doesn't matter a lot about someone dying you'll always seek them out won't you? Loving can cause problems hate , jealously and greed the most ironic thing about love. Love is freedom for most , but they still hang from a ledge. Love is about throwing yourself across the grass and hope they hurry to your rescue people like me fail to realize that.
My former best-friend got me into this series; she loved it, therefore I loved it. Looking back at it, it was horrible; love does not excuse anything. Bad behavior is bad behavior. Toxic bullshit will always be toxic bullshit. I will always regret completing this manga series. At least a few supernatural aspects were okay…ish.
This was actually a great ending! Even if it was a fairly typical ending, it was still with consequence. I don't know if I'll relive/re-read this series, but I still loved how things wrapped up.
wow! iloved this manga, from the moment i started reading i couldn"t keep it,i had to finish it.overall it was an entertaining package. i loved kyou"s character! superb.
I went out and bought the complete box set of Black Bird. I was so excited and thought I would be completely obsessed with the story: a demon leader in love with a “special” human girl? Hell yeah, give me all of that!
But from the first volume I was disappointed. The story just didn’t live up to any of my expectations (and that’s why I hate expecting things based on synopses). Not one volume lifted my spirits. I kept going because when you spent over $150 on a manga set, you endure (at least in my case).
It was the vagueness of the what Misao could do for the clan, of how her “special” powers could help anyone (beside her screwing Kyo and giving him her energy). It was the lack of caring, compassion Kyo (a supposed clan leader) showed for his clan, people and group of protectors, especially when THEY always seem to put him and Misao first). That man didn’t care about anyone but Misao (and vice versa). He said so himself. In fact, he only became the leader because of Misao being the Senku Maiden.
I wanted more from this alleged “SPECIAL” Senku Maiden, more from Kyo and the rest of the colorless characters. Unbelievably, everything revolved around Kyo and Miaso and their toxic ass “love” for each other. A love that didn’t benefit anyone but themselves. No one truly tackled real issues of the demon world, the subjective powers, different clans and the fact that Misao’s parents barely knew shit about who their daughter was FAWKING day and night. It was all swapped under the naïveté rug in the disguise of “As long as you’re happy”. And poor, poor Sho. He was the only character my eyes widened for, started lightening up for. And yet he was prematurely killed by Kyo in a battle that absolutely made no sense. Kyo was the one who took everything from Sho to begin with. He was so easily replaced, so easily forgotten by the characters and I thought that was complete bull. None of it was fair.
If anyone asked me, the real villain of this fractured, incomplete story is Kyo. It was never Sho. But Kyo’s Daitengu were enraptured by his title (that he could never live up to as he doesn’t care enough about anything but Misao) and his “holier than thou” BS. Just as Misao was completely captivated by his arrogance, ignorance and dick. Seriously, what was Misao’s true worth beside the fact that she “smelled good”?
I was even ready for an anime adaptation when this manga first captured my attention. Now, I feel it wouldn’t even be a loss if it’s never adapted.
I usually get a little impatient with stories where the MCs end up being the exception to their world's rules, but I think it worked this time. Although I could see the "did she actually die? nah" fake-out coming from quite a ways away, I still got a little misty-eyed when they found that Misao still had a pulse.
A lot of what made it work for me was Kyo finally getting over his essential selfishness and being a giving person to, and for, Misao as he... kissed her for three days straight. Hehe. That was kind of goofy. It works in the context of an over-the-top melodrama like this, and also fit the story's overall theme of different kinds of strength being effective in different situations.
Kyo relented, and used the kind of strength that Misao had had all along. As a dad he's a lot mellower than he was as a Tengu clan leader, or as a boyfriend, which might not work in his favor as Sou grows up and the inevitable clan conflicts begin again. It's just as well we finish with scenes of domestic bliss, unencumbered with any kind of work or strife.
The "disability rep" in this book is pretty questionable, to be honest. Misao is paralyzed after living through her childbirth, and a few years later, she can walk without any assistance, though the story tells us she can't move very fast or jump. That's nice and all, and I'm sure some paralyzed people end up gaining some mobility after physical therapy. However, I also think there should be more serious consequences for Kyo, or Misao, or both, for evading the Senka Maiden's fate. Maybe if this wasn't a manga from over ten years ago, this whole thing would be handled with less of what feels like a cop-out. Maybe.
I liked the first of the epilogue short stories, and thought the other two were a waste of (admittedly not much) time. Par for the course for such things!
I enjoyed this series. :) Black Bird was more thoughtful than I typically expect from trashy manga for teens, and I liked Misao a lot. On the other hand, I never became particularly fond of Kyo, and the secondary cast wasn't all that memorable to me. It could easily have been a few volumes shorter, and the art didn't have a lot of impact until the very end. Despite its somewhat stronger endgame, it's more of a three-star when I think about it as a whole.

Apparently Kyo has never directly said he’s loved Misao to her face until this volume? That makes a lot of sense because I keep trying to point out that he isn’t a good boyfriend in the least. Just because he doesn’t try to actively kill her doesn’t get him good boy points. Every time he does something the book tries to write it off as it being unique, but it just amplifies the power dynamic and loss of control Misao truly has over her life. The mom plot was odd and added nothing, I would’ve preferred more background information on the Tengu then giving a gosh darn about what they think of their daughter marrying a demon when the reader doesn’t even get that much. “demons are bad, except for the ones that want to keep me alive, and except for my beautiful boyfriend who also wants to keep me alive.” Anyway the baby is born and they name it SOH, sigh. Kyo manages to keep Misao alive by kissing her continuously for three days straight, transferring energy back into her. I’ll admit, I did tear up. Kyo cries when she finally opens her eyes, this is also the first time we see him cry. This is a lot of firsts for him.
Misao can’t walk at first, or really for a while because she still isn’t at 100%. I wonder if this is subtext for when women give birth and are sore and tired afterword, but the author didn’t really want to write the main character as not being able to bounce back quickly so she just kind of made it so she couldn’t walk. In true douchbaggery that Kyo is known for, he nearly slaps his goddamn toddler after Soh says that Misao walks slow. This scene nearly had me laughing if it weren’t so painfully terrible. They try and play it off that he was too emotional to control himself, and ouf that sexism/ toxic masculinity plays its card again.
Why are we supposed to like any of these characters. I swear. Anyway that’s the end, hurrah. It could’ve been better it could’ve been worse. 3/5
Please expand your horizons. Female characters who just don’t do anything, male characters that are praised for “not being as terrible as they could’ve been ™”, and just terrible teenage drama that stems from pure stupidity.
