Oliver Jones was a dull man living a dull life, until one night a stray cat began speaking to him. In English. And that was before things got really strange. Now he is on the run, hunted by an inhuman assassin who will stop at nothing to kill him. His only hope for survival rests with a trio of unlikely new allies: A werewolf with a fondness for Hawaiian shirts, a strange little girl who just might be immortal, and a gunfighter with an anger management problem. Oliver always wanted a little excitement in his life, but now he finds himself living in Interesting Times...

From the Back Cover:

"You see that house?" Tyler pointed at the building they had just left. "It exists at a single fixed point in time. From its perspective the outside world never moves and never changes. So we use it as a safe house. It's a great place to hide for a while."

"A fixed point in time?" Oliver asked. "So...is this the past? Or the future?" Oliver was beginning to think he'd need a physics textbook to understand all of this. Or possibly some LSD.

I just ate this in one sitting. A light snack with some great characters, a fun storyline that sort of demanded that I keep reading. I love the precise language and fun images that are evoked by this new author. I loved the interplay between the new characters that reveal just enough to keep you wanting to know their history and their future. Glimpses into a world that is nutty and paranormal and right here next to us make it an even more fun romp. It is a good thing that this author is a personal friend. He will be getting lots of "quit facebooking. You need to be writing" emails from me. Give it a chance. You may find a character or two you like. Or you may find yourself.

I plan to read more Urban Fantasy in 2018. This book was recommended to me some time ago on r/fantasy. I was looking for something lighter that doesn’t make a brain flex too much while reading and Interesting Times fits the bill nicely.

The book is written in the vein of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but it’s nowhere near it in humor / ingenuity department. It’s not bad, mind you. Actually, it’s quite humorous and easy to read.

Our protagonist is a boring analyst who has absolutely no hobbies or interests. No friends either. Maybe this quote will tell you more about his personality:

All in all, he thought, it was a dull life. He didn’t mind all that much, but on occasion, he would find himself wishing for more. A little excitement. Adventure. Nothing crazy, though. He didn’t fancy exotic vacations in South America or solo climbing up the side of a mountain with nothing but strong fingers and a bag of powdered chalk standing between him and a fall to his death. He just wanted a little something to get his adrenaline going.

Lately, he had been thinking about getting a cat.

And yet, despite his utter lack of personality one day he finds himself in the center of interest of some nefarious faction and sentenced to death. He’s rescued in last minute by inhumanly agile type in the Hawaiian shirt.

Suddenly he finds himself introduced to the local supernatural world – ancient ten-year old girl, werewolves, vampires, lizardmen. And speaking cat who’s a highlight of the story.

Characters were decent. They’re distinguishable and fun enough to continue reading. Jeffrey – the speaking cat was quite fun. Artemis – ancient entity trapped in a body of a 10-year-old girl or a werewolf with questionable fashion taste were all fun. On the other hand, none of the characters feels developed. They don’t really change. While it’s not necessarily bad in the first book of the series, it’s not something I appreciate. Especially when the protagonist remains, basically, his old-boring self even when he may turn out to be the most dangerous man in the world.

Outside weak characterization, this book suffers a bit from other issues. First, it’s written in a simple, sometimes simplistic way. The language never gets in the way of the story but it feels a bit unpolished and there was more than few misspelling / grammar errors.

There was quite a lot of banter. Some of it was funny, most of it was cheesy. Frankly, there were way too many dialogues that somehow inflated the book into a novel while it could be contained in the novella format.

The plot is shallow. Heck, there’s barely any plot at all. It reads more like a series of loosely connected scenes that wrap-up in an anticlimactic way. The ending was disappointing. One of the weakest endings I read in a while.

Overall, this is a light and pleasant read that I liked despite its flaws. It doesn’t require much brain-power to follow the plot and is quite humorous at times.

I’m not sure if I’m interested in the sequel, though.

It was actually a 3.5 stars for me, but why not.

A funny and enjoyable fast read. Not much on the techniques and tools of big writers, but I had a blast and laughed a lot in this one.

*spoiler alert*
This book contains werewolves, lizards, vampires, a little girl with authority and appearantly is not a kid at all, and, my favorite character, a talking cat.

The characters were diverse enough and distinguishable. They all fit in the constructed world of the plot. Some were briefly mentioned, some were stupid, and some were just like anime characters. But it was an organic characterization.

Personal notes:
-----------------------

Page 8: "Had there ever not been trouble in the Middle East? In all of human history?"
-The author keeps referring to how the middle east is always a troubled area. This made me laugh hard, as someone who lives in the middle east. I mean even in a world were the are infinite possibilities, I can totally see that we would always have troubles XD

Page 108: "Perhaps some think God has one tail, while others think he has three tails. "
-In this chapter, a conversation between Blackwell "a vampire" and Oliver is exchanged about the Kalatari "lizard people" going to extinction in a hundred years because of religious divisions causing a civil war between them. A tiny part in the book that grabbed my attention. Again it reminds me of the middle east troubles.

Not sure if the author is influenced by Terry Pratchett, but I had a sense he is, specially how he uses coincidentallity.
He has a good sense of humor as well, I have to say.

Not a very big fan of the ending, but it got me to want to read the next book, so I guess he did a decent job.

In the end, it was interesting enough for me as a reader to keep on turning the pages. A fun, light and fast read. If you're looking for a "five stars" literary value, I don't think you'll find it here. But if you're looking for an adventure loaded with humor and weirdness, then by all means: "May you live in interesting times."

An amusing, light read

You know how you sometimes want a book that's not serious, doesn't require a lot of brain power to read, and is well written? That's this book. I gave it four stars because that was exactly the kind of book I was looking for. If you want something serious or sexy or with a complicated alternate world then move along.

It's written in the vein of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but not as funny. That's not a bad thing. Sometimes you just want to be diverted not completely sucked in. Like THGTTG, the main character is an Everyman who's really more like a Nobody. He gets sucked into unbelievable situations and weathers them well out of failure to act more than anything. He doesn't know what to do so he doesn't do anything. Because he's something of a blank slate, the characters around him are more colorful. Despite his transparency, he's still kind of an endearing character.

This is a light read, something you can read in bits and pieces through myriad interruptions without losing the thread of what's going on. I'd recommend it to people who can't concentrate on a longer, more involved book but still want something diverting during down time, like right before bed.

********I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Let me say that Interesting Times definitely was interesting! I found that it keep me on the edge of my seat; left me wanting to know
what was next for the main charter Oliver.
This was full of interesting characters which left me wanting more.
Not your typical story line about vampires and werewolfs which I appreciated. Nice touch of humor to this story.

I never felt bord or like I wanted to put this book down, actually more the opposite, if I didn't have a job, I would of stayed up and read this all in one sitting. It was an easy read and well written.

I would definitely like to continue on with this story and see how the characters develop.

If someone had said to me 'hey, read this book it's got vampires and lizard people and a werewolf with poor taste in shirts', I'd of said 'nah, you're alright'. But I'm so glad I did read this. I knew very little about what this was actually about. It was mad! Oliver, the main character, had no idea what the hell he was doing and why. One minute his life was dull. Then it wasn't. This urban fantasy was like no other story I've ever read and that's why I enjoyed it so much. It reminded me of Men in Black, except the talking Pug was Jeffrey, a talking cat with a dry sense of humour and a love for Thai food. Bizarre? Yep! Intriguing? Definitely! Another 2 books to follow? Excellent! I may have stumbled across a genre here that I knew very little about. A well deserved 4 stars!

SUMMARY:

An ordinary guy named Oliver Jones lives a dull life  without any hippy or social activity.   One  night a cat started to speak to him. There after he  found himself hunted by inhumane assassin and running for his life with a strange trio.

GENERAL POINTS:

* The book is written in simple way that doesn't require a lot of power to finish it in one sitteing.

*At some point,  you can feel that the book is shallow in terms of ideas and character  development. However, it has a weird  entertainment factor.

*The odd things that kept happening to the main character (Oliver), to some degree helpe in engaging  the readers  by making them think about what will happen next and how Oliver will react now especially he has no personality to start with. It would be good to know more about him his thought and see him developed at the end of the story. He is a passive character with a strange power and thats it.

*The  most intresting charater in the book is Jeferry the cat. His unique glee character added some joy to the story line and made the conversation more enjoyable.

*The fantasy elements of the book is less than mature and weren't invested well in the story to give the book a capitavie feeling. you will find yourself dealing with for example werewolf vampires lizerrd magic but not a magic without expecting it and without seeing its action. It is just out there and you have to imagine it and move on.

I will definitely be reading this again and will be one of favorites of the year. It's a fast paced story about a guy named Oliver who is bombarded with spontaneous events that are rather unpredictable and I just loved it. First, it starts out rather boring detailing the life of Oliver the stock trader with only a stray cat as a friend. All of a sudden the action starts with the talking of the stray cat then going to work in the morning with an assassination attempt when he is rescued by a guy who is related to a group that has been keeping an eye on him for his safety at the head of the god Artemis in the form of a 10 year old. Then visiting a vampires house, almost being turned into a vampire but burns off the vampire blood mysteriously and escapes through a door that wasn't there a moment ago, then reunites with the group that saved him from before and finally being kidnapped by the enemy. The enemy is the Kalatari, Lizard-Men who put out a contract for Oliver because their leader believes him to be dangerous enough to wipe out their entire species. Throughout it all you find out that Oliver is not the ordinary human stock-trader but The Destroyer, who can alter the world by his thoughts and perceptions.

Excellent! a cross between Douglas Adams and Janet Evanovich!

The writing style here is purposely brisk, pithy, and humorous. It's not intended to be literary. This is clearly a comedy in the same manner as Douglas Adams The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or one of Janet Evanovich's light-hearted comic mysteries. If you understand and appreciate this writing style, you'll love this book. I'll admit I wouldn't want a constant diet of books in this vein, but it was exceptionally well done. The humor is low-key and tongue-in-cheek. It's clever and witty but not laugh-out-loud funny.

The plot moves fast with plenty of cliffhanger chapter endings. You want to follow poor bemused Oliver and learn along with him what the heck is going on! I read this all in one day, not wanting to stop, which is not typical for me.

If you enjoy reading something zany and imaginative you are sure to live this book as much as I did.

Christian beware....

Two books in a row started and stopped.....this is really tiresome...Would be so nice if Amazon had a rating system for language in books....got all the way to page twenty...then the language again.....when will authors realize that taking the name of the Lord in vain is absolutely unnecessary to making a book better.

Fun story. Poor Mr. Jones was just a dull man working in a dead end job when a change remark to the local stray cat started him on a road to Interesting Times.

I picked this book up not expecting much. It looked like it had the potential to be funny and entertaining, but given that it was a Kindle freebie I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm pleased to say that, despite a somewhat slow opening, "Interesting Times" ended up living up to its title, and is a hilarious, enjoyable romp with plenty of humor, weirdness, and adventure to keep it fascinating.

Oliver is a stock analyst who lives a life that even he will admit is boring. He's thinking of ways to liven it up when the stray cat he regularly feeds starts talking to him... and that's only the start of the weirdness. Soon an assassin targets him at work, and he finds himself being hunted by a secret society that considers him the most dangerous man in the world. And as Oliver finds himself on the run alongside a laid-back werewolf, a trigger-happy mercenary, and that dang talking cat, he realizes that he's gotten far more than he wished for...

This book starts off on a rather dull note, and I admit to almost dropping it right away -- there are more natural ways to open your story than with a simple biography/character description of your main character, writers. But things pick up several pages in, and I find myself willing to forgive the dull opening. The writing flows nicely, feeling like it progresses naturally from scene to scene instead of jumping from one "episode" to another, and the story has a nice balance of humor and intrigue that I enjoyed.

The characters are delightful as well. Oliver is admittedly dull, but he fits well as an everyman trying to figure out just what's going on and how to survive some admittedly insane situations. His allies, especially Tyler the werewolf, are fun, and their personalities play nicely off of each other. Even the villains don't feel like stock villains, but have a believable motivation for what they do and can even be affable despite having it in for the main character and his friends.

"Interesting Times" is a fun fantasy/sci-fi romp, and if you enjoy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy you'll probably also enjoy this story. And while this story ends on a decent enough note, I'm intrigued enough to check out the sequel...

Spare me the armchair critics who could have written a much better book. Then do it. Otherwise, since you haven't, STFU.
Those who can, do. Those who can't should shut up.
I loved this little gem. It's refreshing format and entertaining characters are just what I needed to take a break from the more serious and time consuming efforts offered on KU lately.
It is never about length, it should always be about entertainment.
THIS was entertaining. I am heading off to book number two, and if I am wrong in my assumption that this is a new and affecting offering, then I will stand corrected. Until then, just read the damn thing. It's an evening of talking cats, disappearing portals into the space/time continuum, and magical entities that will either assist you or assassinate you. Almost a choice.

Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy in San Francisco

One day you wake up and the world is different. You can't quite put your finger on it but... It's odd.

I enjoyed this book on several levels. I like science fiction, the paranormal and San Francisco. Wow, do I miss San Francisco. Love snarky protagonists. Love snarky women protagonists more, but that's just me.

But, it was written in a YA manner and WAY too short. That's the reason why just 4 stars.

Financial analyst Oliver Jones - just a perfectly regular, boring guy as far as he knows - is about to find out just why "May you live in interesting times" is considered a curse, as his life is about to get very interesting indeed. It all starts with a talking cat. Which is impossible. Right?

Hey, finally something good out of the ancient freebie pile! This was delightfully entertaining all the way through.

Suspend Disbelief for a while.

A delightful, charming, funny tale that takes you on a wacky journey. Wonderful quirky characters who add charm, mystery and adventure to the story. Oliver a dull man who leads a dull life never expected that life could be so interesting. I'm hooked and looking forward to the next 2 books in this series.

An interesting journey.

An interesting journey through a world that is right there, unseen by most and reminiscent of Barker and Gaiman.

I was going to write one complaint to do with the cat but, thankfully it was covered and explained later in the story.

Well written with intriguing characters.

Recommended.

Boring guy, has a boring job and an uneventful life until things change. I enjoyed this quite a bit. It's probably better if you don't think about the plot too much, but it was a fun quick read. I plan on reading the sequel.

Pretty decent read. Starts out with too much telling, but quickly becomes interesting.

For my clean readers: Language, including f-word. Violence, murder, drugging another person, kidnapping, attempted murder, and one vampiric bedroom scene that is only minorly detailed.
