Like its predecessor, PERRY'S KILLER PLAYLIST is a slim volume. 224 pages nowadays seems more like an appetizer than a meal. But Joe Schreiber's second young adult novel puts the pedal to the metal and doesn't let up. This would be one exhausting novel if it were much longer.

(Although it could use a few less chapters that are only a page or two long.)

Fans of character-driven novels should look elsewhere. PERRY'S KILLER PLAYLIST is all about the action and comedy with little room for anything else. Perry is a young man touring Europe with his band Inchworm. This could be their big break. But then he runs into Gobi Zaksaukas, the foreign exchange student his family hosted during senior year - until she revealed herself to be an assassin on prom night and forced Perry to drive her as she sought revenge. Now she's killing again and Perry is once more caught in the crossfire.

There is some attempt at characterization, but it's secondary to the crazy set pieces. Honestly, I found PERRY'S KILLER PLAYLIST extremely fun. I enjoy a good action movie, and PERRY'S KILLER PLAYLIST is like the book version of The Killers except not terrible. (Let's face it, it should be criminal to screw up, "One is a cold-blooded assassin! The other is an ordinary person! Together they escape certain death!")

I think PERRY'S KILLER PLAYLIST can be read and enjoyed by those who haven't read AU REVOIR, CRAZY EUROPEAN CHICK. The beginning starts with Perry and does a pretty good job of introducing who Gobi is and why he hopes to see her despite having a wonderful girlfriend. And this isn't a series that asks you to remember any complex backstories. There is continuity, like Perry's issues with his father, but I think father issues are pretty easy to understand.

Do you want to read something quick, funny, with bursts of improbable violence? Then you'll probably enjoy PERRY'S KILLER PLAYLIST. You might not care deeply about the characters, but it makes for an entertaining hour or two.

Read this and more at Living Is Reading!

To say that I was hesitant to read Perry's Killer Playlist is a bit of an understatement. Most sequels as of late have turned out to be unnecessary and just written to put money in somebody's wallet by expanding a stand-alone into a whole series. Au Revior, Crazy European Chick ended pretty nicely for me, and I saw absolutely no need to read an entire book more about Perry and Gobi, even if I enjoy reading about their characters.

While this final (?) installment in the series isn't as good as it's predecessor, it's still an entertaining thrill ride, with guns, explosions, continental manhunts, betrayals, and a seriously badass Lithuanian assassin. I finished this book in a little over a day, since it was impossible to put down with the fast-moving plot and Schreiber's writing that seems to just fly by (as well as the very short chapters).

Let me just say though about Perry's father: that's just fucking wrong. I can't even muster up enough energy to express my utter disgust at this man, but it takes "gross" to a whole new level.

Some of the elements that didn't jive with me very well:

-Gobi's illness. While it did kind of explain some of her actions as to why she does what she does, it just seemed like a plot device to create tension between her and Perry because of what she tries to do when she kind of . . . looses her touch on reality
-The "romance" between Gobi and Perry. It's not an actual romance, but there's definitely romantic tension of some kind. I don't know, they make a great platonic pairing, but I just have a hard time buying into it
-It just doesn't feel necessary. It doesn't truly add anything new to the story. There's no justification as to why it needed to be written and make this a series
-The secondary characters could've been far more developed
-The European setting could've been more taken advantage of, but whatever - guess after Just One Day I expect a little bit more from books set in Europe

I know that sounds like a lot of negatives for a 4 star rating, but I know that these books aren't literary perfection. They're fun, entertaining, the main cast of characters are interesting enough to read about, there's always something happen in the plot department, and the action is very well written and easy to visualize.

A book series that I could pretty easily reccomend to so many people as looking for something to spend a lazy afternoon reading.

As I mentioned in the first book in the series, "Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick", this is a bit of a departure from what I usually read, an fast-paced action and adventure featuring a male protagonist. That being said, I still quite enjoyed it. Aside from the literal "kept on the edge of your seat" and "page-turner" aspect to it (almost as soon as you start this you will find that you have finished it, it lends for a few hours of easy escapism), I think that one of the book's biggest strengths was its setting- Europe. The number of European cities that Gobi and Perry travel to in mere hours is mind-boggling. However, what is perhaps best about all of these settings is that each is extremely well-developed, it truly feels like you visit each of them alongside them, rather than feeling rushed or underdeveloped.

I think that another strength of this book is that the female character is the physically stronger character, while the male character is the emotionally stronger character, the opposite of what we typically see in YA. As such each character compliments the other perfectly- whenever Gobi is hellbent on bursting into a room with her guns blazing, quite literally, Perry is there to talk her off of the edge, again literally at times, whereas Gobi is able to draw Perry out of his comfort zone, letting him see that there is more to life than getting a girlfriend, going to university, and so forth.

All in all, I think that this is the epitome of an all-inclusive novel- male readers will enjoy it just as much as female readers will, and vice versa. Furthermore, being a shorter book that is so fast-paced I think that it would greatly appeal to reluctant readers. I look forward to seeing if Gobi and Perry have anymore adventures up their sleeves!

Perry is on tour with his band in Europe. All of the band members fear the worst: Gobi showing up and ruining the tour. Well, a little bit more than that happens, and nothing ends up well.
Usually, I hate the sequels to books because they're never better than the original. I don't hate this book, it was actually pretty good. All the heart pounding excitement, love, surprise, thrill. That made me love the book. But compared to the first book, this was pretty lackluster.

Originally reviewed on reutreads, a young adult book blog.

I had a vague notion that there was going to be a sequel to one of my favorite reads of 2012, Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick , but it wasn't really on my radar. When it showed up in my mailbox, I was very excited. Turns out, Gobi was never quite done with Perry, and there are still many targets to assassinate.

I love the zaniness and surrealism of this series, but more than that I love how it balances said zaniness with realism and dark topics. Gobi's a bit crazy, yes. She is constantly keeping Perry second-guessing himself and her about their relationship, about everything, really. Her actions are so calculated that they are made to seem impulsive, if that makes sense, so Gobi orchestrates everything in their relationship, leaving Perry--and the reader--unsure about whether they can trust her. But with that fake impulsiveness comes a dark side as well. Gobi's character is further developed in this book in my favorite way--subtly and vaguely, but definitely hinting at the many, many secrets in her past.

If you're looking for a fast paced and quick read, I would definitely try this series. Both books are under 250 pages, and the chapters are short and sweet. There are fight scenes, car chases, assassinations... what more do you need?

Lastly? I was really excited to hear that there will likely be a third installment of Gobi and Perry's adventures, as Joe said in this interview:
One of the fun things about that relationship is that it still hasn’t settled itself out yet. There are still some bumps in the road to sort out. I think there’s at least one more installation on the horizon for them.

Can't wait.

Gobi and Perry are back for another action-packed adventure that'll push Perry to his limits, and Gobi to the extreme. Filled with some excellent scenes, intriguing twists and turns and a lot of mayhem, these two will keep young adult readers entertained and wanting more of this fun and unique series. Personally (and I'm in my mid-twenties), I can't wait to see what is in store for the dynamic, albeit different, duo. Pretty Lethal by Joe Schreiber is the second book in the Pretty Deadly series and I hope that he won't leave us hanging. That being said, it was still a fun read. Really. I quite enjoy the growth of the characters (which were already starting to show in the first book) and I liked the way that Gobi and Perry interact with one another. Two very different people from two different worlds trying to find common ground is quite a nice plot when one's in the mood for something along those lines.

As in Pretty Deadly, Pretty Lethal was well-written and nicely thought out, which will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

I personally love how Schreiber is able to keep the action coming. There's never a dull moment, which is what young adults want from their books, and I really quite enjoyed the setting. Now, I can't tell you how accurate the imagery of Venice is, because I've never been there before, but the descriptions that Schreiber used were adequate and drew me in.

Yes, your teenage bookworm will enjoy this book if he/she is into these spy/assassin/action/adventure type of books. So, start buying up some great reads before the Christmas rush.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

My Summary: Perry's life has been almost perfect since his wild night with exchange-student-turned-assassin Gobi. He has the perfect girlfriend, a happy family, and his band is starting to really take off.

In fact, Inchworm is set to go on a European tour. Wandering around Venice, he makes a choice: he's going to visit the bar he and Gobi promised to meet at. What happens next leads Perry on another wild ride around Europe with the deadly assassin he may - or may not - still be in love with.

My Thoughts: Another great read from Joe Schreiber! I didn't think I'd enjoy this installment as much as I did the first, but I was pleasantly surprised - Perry and Gobi's second adventure is just as fast-paced and action-packed as the first!

Schreiber's books may be a little on the short side, but he definitely knows how to pack one heck of a story into those pages. I was so pumped to read Perry's Killer Playlist after scanning the summary and finding out it was set in Europe - there's something so incredibly badass about a gun battle staged in a Parisian cafe, mais non?

And, like in the first installment, Schreiber begins every chapter with a song title (something this music hoarder really loved!).

Final Thoughts: I recommend this to readers who enjoy action-packed YA with a little romance thrown in - male readers will definitely enjoy it!

Loved it. Perry is at it again- he's taking a year off- delaying college (got into Columbia with an essay that outlined that wild night with Gobi that we read about in Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick) to see where his band, the Inchworms might go. He hooks up with an unlikely girlfriend, 22 year old Paula, hot and a music promoters assistant. Not one to delve too deeply into his good luck Perry is delighted when she sets up a European tour for the Inchworms.
In Venice, Perry cannot help himself and goes to the meeting place he and Gobi set up if he were ever able to get to Europe.
Of course this kicks off events that rival that evening in Manhattan the year before with crosses, double crosses, kidnappings, imploding/exploding families and at the center of it all our witty friend Perry and his homicidal friend Gobi.
I am not sure how Mr. Schrieber pulls off the hijinks Perry gets into- in other hands it would be a tiresome checklist of explosions, gunshots, exploding walls... you get what I mean- but with Perry narrating it is amusing and fun.
Really, I can't wait for the next installment.

Au Revoir Crazy European Chick is a recent-ish favorite of mine, and I somehow forgot there was a sequel. By the time I got to reading it, my overall feelings about it were still high, and this book just feels more tacked on and unnecessary than anything else.

Perry's band is touring Europe, and who else shows up but Gobi. Quickly, it becomes a big international espionage/manhunt situation, and there are double-crosses and major conspiracies abound before coming to the conclusion. The issue is that the first book worked by going along with the absurdity and just having someone come along for the ride. In this one, there are far too many other people involved, and the conspiracy is far too broad to really make a ton of sense story-wise.

It's like a bad sequel to your favorite movie. Consider skipping it and just sticking with the original, you'll be happier.

Perry Stormaire is doing well. He has a new love in his life who isn't a Crazy European Chick. A wealthy European promoter is going to sponsor Perry's band, Inchworm, for a 12 city tour in Europe starting in London. Their opening gig is a hit.
Then they come to Venice. On a whim, Perry checks out Harry's Bar on the off chance that Gobi, the Crazy European Chick will be there. They connect up with Perry helping Gobi get rid of a steamer trunk holding a person she has just shot. They dump it into the Grand Canal and things go crazy from there.
Shootouts and bombings are some of the things that Perry and Gobi encounter on her trail of killings.
Another great adventure with Perry and Gobi.

The follow-up to Crazy, European Chick, this book continues the adventures of Perry and Gobi. Why are they? Why, a 17-year-old bass player and a hitwoman of course. How in the world did they meet? I'm glad you asked. Gobi was assigned to Perry's family as an exchange student. Their wild and crazy adventures continue in this book as Perry's band, Inchworm, lands a tour deal in Europe where he encounters Gobi again. There's a good amount of gunfire and death, but I feel pretty safe in telling you that all turns out well. A fun YA read.

I had read the first book on the Perry and Gobi series and was excited to read this one. Surprisingly, this one was hard to find and I had to get it used, which was fine.

I thought the pacing was supreme, super fast paced, lots of dialogue and loads of fun. This one didn't have as much action as the last one but I still gobbles it up.

I highly recommend this series if you're looking for something that will grab your attention and is a fast read.

Inspiring and crazy

I made this rating because I loved it. It just as good as the first book. I liked all the book including the characters Perry and Gobi. Who I wished finally got to be together as a couple. I would recommended you read the first book before reading this one but if you like espionage and thrill seeker thus book is for you.

Perry has a new girlfriend and is on his way with his band to tour Europe. When he sees Gobi again, she’s back to her old tricks and he’s running around Europe with her, being shot at and discovering that what he thought was the truth is not. The two books in this series are fun, quick reads that make you laugh out loud.

A follow-up to a great first! I liked this one too, but probably the first better. These would definitely appeal to YA but enough violence that I wouldn't want mine to read it for a few more years.

Meh. There was a lot to this book that just didn’t make sense. The band, the girlfriend, why he’d want to meet back up with Gobi. Reluctant readers who liked the first one, and like a series so they don’t have to learn new characters would like this.

Te deja mucho que desear, medio pesado.
Muchas partes de la trama me parecen súper inecesarias y no te da el cierre que esperabas de la historia. Personaje muy vagos, sin una personalidad llamativa.

Like the first book in this series, this was a fun, fast paced adventure with clueless Perry and assassin Gobi. Being the nerd I am, I made Perry's Killer Playlist on Spotify and even though it includes a few 80s songs I was never really fond of to begin with, it is as much fun as the book.

Freaking awesome. The only two words in the English dictionary that can be used together to describe my thoughts of Perry’s Killer Playlist by author Joe Schreiber. Seriously, after reading Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick his first YA novel, I have been eyeing the sequel for about a month and now that I’ve finally gotten to read it I can proudly say that I = mind blown. I had my concerns, I mean, the first novel was nothing but Perry getting to play Gobi’s getaway driver/hostage before he learns that he might be falling for her. Well, that and the fact that he becomes her accomplice to the murders she pulled off in New York City. Perry and Gobi are back and this time, it’s on Gobi’s home turf of Europe.

Europe, guns, betrayal and a femme fatale? Yeah, that sounds like my cup of tea.

Perry’s Killer Playlist occurs a few months after the events that took place in Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick. We have our main character Perry who is now living a life without Gobi. He has found a new girlfriend, his band is going on a European tour and after one day in Venice, Perry has found Gobi again. She has another hit list and she needs his help, whether he likes it or not. Perry and Gobi travel around Europe, finishing off the men that Gobi has marked for death. The two characters quarrel much like in the last novel, but the difference now is that Perry must face his feelings towards Gobi while Gobi begins to hide the single thing on this Earth that can kill her from Perry. To make things worse for our buddy Perry, it looks like his girlfriend might be just as messed up as the girl who keeps on taking him hostage; Hasn’t he figured out yet that if their name starts with a constant and ends with a vowel they are most likely assassins?

The one thing I think I loved most about Perry’s Killer Playlist was that it takes the story in a whole new direction. It isn’t the novel before it being repeated in a different setting, the plot is entirely different, the characters seem to have developed into these badass creatures and with that comes more dangerous situations. Perry goes from being the hostage to actually getting his hands dirty himself, and as he faces his feelings for Gobi we get to see a side of him that wasn’t really looked into in the last novel. Perry reaches an extreme and I loved every minute of it.

I’ll admit that I felt like the action that we got throughout Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick wasn’t seen as much in Perry’s Killer Playlist. Sure Gobi was still killing bad guys left and right and sure there were still tons of moment where I thought she was going to shoot Perry in the face, but there were more people problems in this novel. We have to deal with Gobi’s own mortality, emotions, girlfriends turning out to be assassins and what not.

But, considering the deux ex machina that we got at the end of the novel, I’ll let it all slide. The ending might have been one of my favorite scenes out of all the YA novels I’ve read. It screamed Rush Hour 3 meets every movie that has Jason Statham. Seriously, by the time the novel came to a close my heart was tired from pounding so much and alas, I found myself yearning for the third novel that I’m sure won’t disappoint.

I’d recommend this novel to fans of the one prior to it. Readers who love action and thrillers will adore series and those of us who are looking for quick reads will probably have just found the apples of their eye.
