Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
These Naruto books bring back memories when I use to watch the anime. I love Naruto so much that I named my daughter Sakura. I love how funny, silly but loyal Naruto is to his friends and those he cares about. I will read and reread this series forever....and then I will rewatch the show! I highly recommend this series to anyone that loves manga.
I hate seeing Naruto be such a weakling on his first real mission, but as Kakashi says, he IS the one to grow the most in such a short time.
Of course, that's not hard when you're that pitiful. :)
I have to admit, I like the first battle between Kakashi and Zabuza better in full animation over the original version. The psych-out was great.
Original Review:
Introducing Zabuza! The Demon of the Hidden Mist is up against rank amateurs. What a surreal sight this is, after seeing what Naruto and Sasuke eventually become. What? This little moron and this budding psychopath will become two of the most powerful ninjas in the world?
Definitely not yet. It really helps that this series sets up very interesting and extremely impressive villains like Zabuza to hopelessly outmatch our heroes.
Naruto was my gateway drug into the world of manga around 8th grade (thank u Peter for lending me your entire bookshelf of 3-in-1 editions 🙏).
That being said, I'm fuming at my 13 year old self for deleting my reviews of around 40+ volumes (literally the only series I've deleted from this account), and only because I didn't like the way it looked having them logged as 3-in-1's....
Anyways, today I stumbled across several volumes of Naruto at the thrift store, and buying them finally ignited the deep-buried fondness and nostalgia I hold towards this series. I have no idea where I left off thanks to the aforementioned review deletions.......... so I'll just have to start from the beginning, and finally finish! (good times were my classmates teasing me for Iruka being my favourite, instead of someone more powerful 😭)
In this 2nd volume, Naruto and his two teammates get an assignment: to protect an old man. But this job is a bit trickier than they originally thought (let's just say that intel - correct intel - is key).
It's apparently about teamwork and different techniques and ... yeah, that's about it. Sorry.
We seem to be getting one opponent after another so the kids can get better and better ninjas. Along the way, we also meet different ninjas of different levels. Rinse, repeat.
Still not sure I like this. Especially the whole fighting-followed-by-lengthy-explanations stuff. :/
Naruto got me hooked, why didn't I read this before? This one Naruto and his friends start their first mission with the help of one of his powerful teachers.
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are junior ninjas now but they're tired of their menial missions and ask for something more difficult. They get more than they bargained for when they come up again Zabuza, "the demon."
This is really not my thing. It's all fight, fight, blah, blah. My husband insists that the story is uh-maze-ing though so I push on even though I'm secretly thinking, 'what story???' At least in this volume Naruto is approximately 50% less annoying than the first.
I realized I haven't put up a review for this and the next few volumes, so here it comes :)
It's not bad, with the first mission of our Kakashi-tutored trio on the road and facing off Zabuza, the Demon of the Hidden Mist. Naruto the Maverick Ninja shows off his skill and quick thinking, while Sasuke starts his meteoric rise to ninja power. Kakashi is definitely among my favourite characters of this manga, and his way of teaching is very interesting indeed. Again, it's Sakura who gets the short shrift, and I guess I will keep bemoaning the unfair treatment of women in Naruto till the end of days ;)
Zabuza's Water Prison Technique was perfect! Despite being perfect and all, Team Seven's brilliant strategy prevailed against Zabuza! Not to mention Kakshi's copy techniques were unparalleled, too!
Story Line: 5 stars out of 5. I really do love going back to the beginning. It's so much fun reading it! I'm not going to go detail crazy like I did with the first volume. I'm going to try to keep my reviews short now. Also I forgot to mention that I have been into Naruto for over 7 or so years.
Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke want harder missions. They are tasked with escorting a bridge builder back to his home. At first, they believe it's going to be a simple mission. They are attacked by two ninja. They are after the bridge builder, Tazuna.
Sasuke defeats them easily. Naruto froze up while he was in battle. He gets wounded by a poison kunai. He vows to never freeze up again. He cuts the poison out of his hand and makes a vow of pain.
Gato is angry that the two ninja that Zabuza sent out didn't complete the task. Zabuza goes to fight them. While fighting Zabuza Kakashi is caught in the water prison jutsu. He tells Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to run. They stay to fight. Naruto is able to come up with a plan. They help free Kakashi.
It is also revealed that Kakashi has the Sharingan eye. That is from the bloodline of the Uchiha clan. Kakashi uses the Sharingan to defeat Zabuza. Haku shows up, throws needles into Zabuza's neck. He takes his body and runs off.
Kakashi collapses after battle. They make it to Tazuna's house. Kakashi starts their first lesson.
Characters: Naruto- I love how he keeps developing throughout this volume. He grows as a character. He makes a plan that no one expects him too! I will support him throughout the whole manga!
Kakashi- He is so awesome. He has faith in his students! He also shows his strength in this volume. He is pretty cool with the Sharingan as well.
Sakura- I still really dislike her. I don't like the way she treats Naruto. She can go somewhere.
Sasuke- He is such a jerk. He even makes fun of Naruto because he froze up. I really don't like how cocky he always is!!
Drawing/writing style: 5 stars out of 5. Absolutely love!

The trio are finally sent on their first serious mission and find themselves going up against tough foes who look to cause harm.
A lot of lore-building in this volume and gives us a quick teaser of the vast world of ninjas, the darker sub-cultures within each village and even a brief taste of ninjutsu!
We also get our first look at Kakashi's special ability! No one wonder he was such a badass to my eyes back when I was a kid.
I liked this book because it is about ninjas and I like ninjas and I was like what they do they climb things very fast and they also have cool ninja stars. And this book is about three ninjas training to be a ninja and they want to be the best ninjas ever but they always get attacked and they get hurt.I recommend this book to Kenneth because he likes Naruto and he also likes action books that are cool and interesting.
Not as exciting. I'm more looking forward to the Ninja trials. Those were my favorite parts back in high school when I first read and watched Naruto.
I will say that this volume did have a pretty epic fight scene with Zabuza. Naruto/Sasuke/Kakashi all showing off their skills. I can't wait for Sakura's character arc to come during the trials!
