Now in its 16th year, The Bathroom Reader — which seems to have replaced the tie as the most popular Father's Day gift idea — has become a movement, with satisfying, easily digested new selections sure to wipe away bathroom boredom. Handily arranged by length — “short (a quick read), “medium (1 to 3 pages), and “long (for those extended visits) — the book covers everything from Americana to The Name Game to Pop Science and Wordplay. Readers can learn the origins of superglue, sample news stories about underwear, read about animals famous for 15 minutes, and learn of unknown heroes of the Wild West. This broad assortment eliminates ennui while wittily educating readers trapped in airports, cars, buses, or lavatories.
I've been reading several books this year, and this is the first one I've finished. It's obviously not great literature, but it is entertaining and you learn some totally useless information too. For instance, Elvis' last words were "I think I'll go read a little bit." and George Washington had two horses shot out from under him in the French and Indian War.
I've read a ton of Uncle John's Bathroom Readers, and everyone of them, does not disappoint. If you like random non-fictional factoids and short stories then these books are perfect for you.
I love this series of books put out by 'Uncle John' and is meant to be some interesting reading for when you find yourself attending, um, the bathroom and have some unexpected time on your hands...! I am HOOKED!!! I am hooked, and I love these books SO much, I feel spoiled when I have to attend a bathroom without the comfort of one of these bad boys in it! I feel as though the time is wasted when I could have spent it reading!
It's also because of these books that I now have a wee library shelf in my bathroom now, and stock it with either real trash, or real interesting, material. The content of these books are a lot of humor, general interest, pop culture, stories, origins, top tens, and some longer in-depth topics, for, longer, um, meetings.
Do you read in the bathroom??? Let me know; is it a crossword, or a newspaper, a novel or a tablet!? A bookcase??! I wanna know and hear from you!!
(Trust me; 'unstoppable' is something that you always want ass-0ciated with you and your bathroom!)
Like all Uncle John's Bathroom Readers, this was an enjoyable read. A collection of articles, lists and facts of varying lengths, many of which will stay lodged in your head long after the book is done. I found this book in the Thunder Bay Flybrary, a selection of books in the Thunder Bay International Airport, maintained by the TB Public Library. I will try to return it next time I return to TB, which will probably be next June.
I love these books, even though I don't read in the bathroom. They're full of cute stories, useless information, trivia, and some actual educational material. I buy them used, even taking the risk that some previous owner took them into their bathroom. (All smells are particulate.)
I first heard of this books a few years ago but in one of my summer class's our professor let me borrow one and I absolutely love these books. They are full of useful and useless knowledge. The funniest thing was we were talking one day in class about The Flash and how he couldn't be real and blah blah blah, and low and behold as I was thumbing through the book there was a section on super heroes and if they were possible and one of the pages was about the flash. I really think this series of book could get students not only to read but to start asking question therefore taking control of their learning. Great books.
My young son first discovered Uncle John's awesome books and I quickly got hooked. These books are so easy to read, and if you are a trivia buff like my son and I are, then you will thoroughly enjoy sinking your teeth into these very enjoyable books.
Yet another fine edition of fun facts and trivia from Uncle John. My favorites were the story of the French Legion and how the Democrats, Republican and Whig parties were created. The great thing about this series is that you can pick it up, open to any page and find something interesting.
There were many interesting facts and stories...but the pages given over to speeches by past U.S. presidents and the history of both major U.S. political parties left me yawning...in fact, I read about .001% of those over-lengthy writings.
What better way to spend an afternoon then on expanding one's mind with tons of nearly useless information!? I heartily enjoyed this installment (pun rather intended) of this series and plan on picking up another when the need for random facts, or something else, strikes me!
