Named a "modern masterpiece" by The A.V. Club, the crticially-acclaimed series Locke & Key takes on new life in a reformatted hardcover collection. The end is here! The Locke & Key Master Edition, Vol. 3 features the fifth and sixth L&K arcs, "Clockworks" and "Alpha & Omega," with all-new cover art and design by co-creator Gabriel Rodriguez.

The final parts of the Locke and Key series, I’m sad to say goodbye! Everything that has happened in the previous instalments, the functions of all the different keys… it’s all coming to a head in these final two segments: “Clockworks” and “Alpha and Omega”.
“Secrets are the prisons we make for ourselves.”
Guys… I gotta say. This entire series blew my winter socks off! And these two final instalments in particular were incredible. In “Clockworks” we go back in time to see what exactly happened all those years ago… and then in “Alpha and Omega” we get the final showdown – and it does NOT disappoint.
I have a lot of love for these characters, they have been so well-developed and they just feel so real and human. Kinsey has even grown on me, as I initially found her a bit irritating at the start. Tyler, however, has my heart. And Dodge was just so hateful and annoying... but I don't wanna say anymore for fear of potential spoilers. It's really hard to discuss the final part of a series as I don't want to discuss what I thought of certain events as I like to keep my reviews spoiler-free.
In the final part I was getting all sweaty and nervous as I flicked through each page; the stakes were high, no one was safe, I felt so stressed as I’ve grown attached to the Locke children, and even to their mother. But I can say that I’m very happy with the ending, I feel it was executed perfectly. It wasn't necessarily what I expected, but at the same time, I didn't know what to expect either! Just when I thought I knew what was going on and where it was all heading, Hill would throw me another curveball!
I never thought comic books or a graphic novel would get me all emotional and make me cry, but Locke and Key has proved me wrong. This is truly some of Hill’s best work in here – and when you combine that with the absolutely breathtaking illustrations that Rodriguez provides and this series is just another level. I implore you – if you think you are not a comic book person, or if you don’t know where to start…. READ LOCKE AND KEY. It’s been the best I’ve read. It’s been a fun ride and I’m sad to get off! But Hill has alluded to future stories connected to this world, sooooo that’s pretty darn exciting!
A fellow Locke & Key fan on instagram suggested I choose my favourite key explored in the series. I've gone for the Timeshift Key, I think it would be pretty awesome to be able to go back and revisit different time periods. You may not be able to change events, but just being able to observe would be enough for me!
Bye Locke & Key... *cries* but I will revisit some day I am sure, and I'm excited for the TV series!
★★1/2 I found myself wondering if the characters here ever got tired of talking. Because they never stopped running their mouths! Seriously, it was talk talk talk talk talk talk talk. There were some great developments and I really liked where Joe Hill took the characters in the resolution, but I really think Joe Hill needs to work on his pacing and momentum, as well as work on plotting so everything can work as a satisfying whole. This is the third time I’ve been left less than impressed by Hill’s work. Maybe his work just isn’t for me.
At last, the history of the keys! As you might expect, everything comes together while Dodge makes his final move. Equally compelling to the story of the keys, is how this fractured family, recovering from a tragedy, struggles to maintain that family bond and overcome their personal issues. I really fell for the kids as well as the mom, who were just trying to cope and get through life.
All of the major plot threads were wrapped up and it was very satisfying. You don't get all of the answers but it was enough for me. The art was also very consistent with only a few pages of an alternate artist. Very pleased with this series. Can't believe I put it off as long as I did.
Alas, it is over. This was a great end to the series. I wouldn't say it is the perfect ending, but I still loved reading it for both the story and the beautiful artwork. Now, I just need that Locke and Key TV show and my life will be complete.
I’ve been really looking forward to reading this whole series expecting it to be a five star series.
Slightly disappointed yes but still brilliant. So many great ideas but for me it didn’t focus enough on its potential.
There were at times too much dialogue for things that weren’t needed in the final volumes when they could have been explaining the keys further or even the demons.
This is actually my second time reading the entire Locke and Key graphic novel series. That alone should tell you how good it is. I very rarely reread anything, I reread all three huge volumes of this one in a single weekend.
I would consider Locke and Key to be one of my all time favorite books. On the surface it is a supernatural horror tale written by the acclaimed Joe Hill. But it goes so much deeper than that.
10/2022 Damn it! The last volume made me cry. I think last time I was so immersed in the story and rushing so hard to get to the end because this is an edge-of-your-seater kind of read that I forgot a lot about the last several issues. This time around I took my time some more and stopped myself from furiously flipping through the pages to find out what happens. I say this all the freaking time but Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez got my adrenaline going there at the end for sure and that is the makings for a story I’m sure to love. I’ve read many more comics now as opposed to the first time I read this series and now, comparatively, I can say with certainty that this series ended so strong and stayed so cohesive throughout. Since my last read, Locke and Key: The Golden Age has come out and I am going to go straight into that one now. I can’t wait!
09/2019 Oh goodness, this has been such a fun read! This comic series makes me want to try so many more and that is what truly makes a book great. Anything that is so wonderful it inspires more is true art and success. I have said in my reviews of the previous books in this series that I love how easily the story flows and how you don’t get lost in the content like you can sometimes in other comic series which is why I think this would be a great starting point for someone wanting to get into comics. There are so many fun surprises that pop up throughout this series. The idea of the keys unlocking all the mysteries of the house is so magically genius! This series had a solid ending, no loose threads were left which was wonderful. The characters grew so much. By the end I felt attached to each of them and I just wanted them to succeed. Like almost everything else by the King family, this book isn’t at its core a scary story, it’s a story about family and forgiveness and finding your way in life. I could sit here and gush about the story and the art forever so instead I will stop here and just say you need to give this series a try, you just might find that comics are cool even for adults who don’t want to read strictly about superhero’s.
I can see why this series won awards. The characters are well defined and you care about them. The villain is horrible and keeps finding ways to stay ahead of the characters. You feel the characters you care about are in real danger and the magic remains an interesting mysterious element. A well done series though with the deal and issues mentioned certainly one for adults rather than young audiences.
Wow! My jaw is on the floor because of how everything came together in this finale. I honestly want to read the whole series again! This last volume was absolutely thrilling and had tons of action, magic, tragedy, and heart—all the workings of a great story! This definitely makes my top graphic novel series list.
What a way to close the story. The first half of the book gives you all the background stuff you wanted to know. They history of the house and how and why the first keys were made. It also tells the story of Tyler’s dad and his friends and all the stuff the did with the keys followed by what happened to Luke. Amazing revelations. The second half of the book is the big finally! This had me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen to everybody. I even got teary eyed reading the final bits of this story. Highly, highly recommend checking this one out!
Difficult to rate this book on its own while I've just had a read through the entire series but this book was clearly the standout. Don't get me wrong the previous two master editions were wonderful but this was a whole other level. This book was tense and I felt a sense of anxiety I rarely feel while reading other comics. I was nervous and sweating and there was no hold up on the drama. Right to the end. A tad emotional also.
Some spoilers ahead.
At this stage I'm already well invested in the characters themselves. Some I love and some, well one in particularly I truly despise. Whether it's Tyler coming to the rescue, roofus playing his part to save bode or uncle Duncan stepping up. Each character has a marvellous story in the ending of this book.
The book was written so well overall. As I mentioned I truly despise dodge and while it was luke who was possessed by a demon, when he got his ending, I couldn't care for him. Dodge was that good as an a**hole.
The magic of the keys continued to impress me and with so much whispering iron left now, it makes one wonder will Joe hill return to this story one day? Probably not, some things are left well alone. But you never know ....
There are some spinoffs and prequels which I will hunt down to read. This series overall is a must. This book, the conclusion of the story was pretty epic. Check it out.

(Zero spoiler review) 4.5/5 If I really wanted to, I could find a few things to quibble about this final collection of Locke and Key, including one galling creative choice that had slipped my mind from the first time I read it, and had me near apoplectic at the sheer unnecessary absurdity. But then that final issue hits, and all the minor, and one major problems I have with this collection falls away as the feels kick in at something pretty darn special coming to an end. And what an ending at that. Undoubtedly the greatest single issue ending to an ongoing comic of all time. I defy you to tell me otherwise. God damn Joe Hill obviously usurped all of his fathers power of good endings, because all of pappa King's endings put together don't better this one. A beautiful end to one of comics hidden gems. Just avoid the Netflix adaptation like the plague. Sound advice across the board, that. 4.5/5
Hell yeah!!! Terrific book (all of them actually)... just felt a bit dumb in the "final resolution", I even needed to recur to google to understand "how it was done" (hate being so dumb).
Un troisième volume qui conclue très bien cette saga horrifique et fantastique et qui nous apporte des réponses quant à ses fameuses clés magiques ! [CHRONIQUE] -> http://pugoscope.fr/2076-locke-key-ma...
Not a very satisfactory ending (ending was too convenient) but otherwise I loved it. 5th book was better than the 6th one. I gave 5 stars for the 5th book and 4 stars for the 6th book. 5th was probably the best one since it gives the backstory of Rendell Locke and his friends, also the backstory of the locks and keys in Lovecraft mansion. Overall a great horror series. Even though I am a chicken when it comes to horror, I did okay with this series. I guess I am more scared of the movies because of the sound effects. Books don’t scare me that much. 4 stars for the entire series. Definitely one of the best graphic novel series I have read so far. The artwork was great too.
A lot of things were left unexplained at the end. How did Dodge get trapped in the well? Wasn’t Luke already killed? Then how did the demon possess Luke’s body, even though it lay rotting in the water filled cave? What is it with that wellhouse? Rendell’s mom appeared there and then Rendell himself at the end? What kind of magic is that and why do they vanish if they get out of wellhouse? How did Bode come back? How did he get into his body again? I have way too many questions about the ending, which is why I am not entirely satisfied with the ending.
The third and final volume collect Clockworks and Alpha & Omega. Clockworks serves as a narration device to finally let us know what happened all those years ago to set Dodge off. Alpha & Omega serves as a (somewhat) satisfying conclusion. There is a moment at the very end that feels a bit like deux ex machina (Bode...), but the book still ends with some serious consequences. 8/10 for the story and 7/10 for the art.
Overall, an enjoyable sci-fi, horror story. 8/10 for the story and 7/10 for the art.
Great comics. They have the readability of a novel combined with great artwork. The characters and dialog drive the story with the pictures making it better. It doesn't rely on pictures to make up for a lack of story. It also has an interesting ending that is satisfying with out being too predictable.
I don't think I actually cried when I read this series the first time, but I cried just now finishing it the second time. Locke & Key truly is my favorite comic ever!
Final two volumes are collected in this hardcover. Hill nails the ending cementing this as a comic masterpiece. I re read this series at least once a year. A must read for any comic book fan.
The re-read of Locke and Key was as great as the first time around. I can't wait to read the Locke and Key/Sandman collaboration. They all get 5 stars :)
