I Dreamt of Netherfield

Rate this book
When Elizabeth Bennet walks three miles to Netherfield to look after her beloved sister, she wishes for nothing more but to see Jane restored to health and to Longbourn. What she most certainly does not want is to be continuously thrown into increasingly dangerous adventures with the arrogant Mr. Darcy. But as Netherfield's ghosts begin to draw her in, so does the man she most particularly wishes to avoid.

Supernatural romance, clean.

creepy!

Ghost stories really aren’t my thing. I don’t find joy in being scared! Had this not been an author I know I like, and a P&P variation, I likely would have stopped before the end of the story. Luckily it was, so I kept reading. And I’m glad I did. The story wasn’t *too* scary. I’m not sure the conclusion made much sense, but maybe it would for ghost story readers. I loved the epilogue. It was a fun but I’m glad I didn’t read it at night!

A paranormal variation on Pride and Prejudice, with ghosts and strange happenings, this story borders on horror, but does not go quite that far, though it is gothic and quite dark. It's not a novella, but it reads like one, because the reader feels glued to the story until it ends.

The Netherfield of this story starts out as a creepy old mansion that has not been lived in for quite a long time, and it's in bad shape, with the detritus of past lives left behind. The farm land has all been sold off, so all that remains is a decrepit pile, gardens growing wild, and a lake on the park, about which local stories are used to frighten children.

Elizabeth Bennet arrives to nurse her ailing sister, and wonders what Mr. Bingley was thinking when he leased the place. The story is told through her first-person point of view, as well as Mr. Darcy's, and sometimes Caroline Bingley's. The only time I got momentarily confused about point of view was when I was in such a hurry to read what happened next that I failed to notice the heading at the beginning of the section telling me whose perspective followed.

This is a suspenseful story, and its strange occurrences soon heighten the need for interaction between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, so that they find themselves caught up together in events even while they attempt to solve a mystery from the house's past. Highly recommended.

This was excellent! I could have just highlighted the whole book.

It manages to be funny, scary, romantic and true to the original.

I especially liked Caroline’s part of the story and her part of the epilogue.

Highly recommend. I will be reading it again.

Wonderful

A super spooky ghost story that begins during Elizabeth's stay at Netherfield Park to nurse Jane. In this version, Netherfield has been abandoned for many years prior to Bingley's arrival, and there's a lot of creepy rumors that were in circulation about some horrible events that happened there long ago. While Jane is sick, the ghosts come out to harass some of the residents, including Elizabeth and Darcy. They're caught together in many of the ghosts' hauntings. As per usual, Darcy already admires Elizabeth, and Elizabeth gradually learns that Darcy isn't such a stuffy and pompous person as she originally thought.

I love the author's use of the first person narrative, switching from Elizabeth to Darcy, and then even to Caroline Bingley. This author is a master of witty banter, and she has a fabulous sense of humor, which I greatly appreciate. The humor is particularly important because this story becomes extremely dark and dangerous. It needs the many lighter moments she creates in order for the romance to shine through, and it does. This is a swoon worthy Darcy, and I just love his character. I also love Elizabeth, as she's courageous, caring, and receptive to her changing feelings for Darcy. Surprisingly, even Caroline becomes a sympathetic character, and that's unusual.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for a dramatic, romantic, and imaginative story.

I am a reader not a writer.

I couldn't stop reading this book. Great job MS wei, reading this book was a rough ride on an old boat. I couldn't guess what was going to happen next, I'm a reader not a writer so I can't put into words how much I enjoyed this book. Anyone who is a p&p fan would enjoy this book. Great job MS wei. A Rather Gothic Treat - Tastefully Presented.

This book combines so many elements in such ways and yet maintains all the traits we enjoy in each character. It kept my interest and repeatedly challenged me as the great truths were discovered so as to cause more than one to improve their view of life and those around them.

I have never read a variation by Lin Mei Wei that I didn’t enjoy, and this one did not break that streak. This well-written variation was fun, spooky, exciting, and romantic.

another wonderful novel

Mei Wei Lin has done it again. I am fascinated at this author’s ability to creat such distinct and wonderful variations. Each one features a slightly different version of our beloved characters that still remains true to the canon, while allowing the exploration of the plot.

I loved the paranormal aspects of this novel. It was well done without it overpowering the story. You still saw character growth and the eventual falling in love of ODC.

I loved the Elizabeth in this story. She is not overwhelmingly brave or smart. She behaves as a woman of the times would. She is allowed her moments of confusion and fright. But then, she turns into out Lizzy with her wit and charm. She feels very human and very honest. Darcy too is very well written. I was very happy with his portrayal and of the little breadcrumbs he leaves for Elizabeth to realize the gentleman is not unmoved.

I did not like that this was in 1st person and it alternated points of view. I prefer 3rd person POV. This is a preference and not something to take points away from the story. Personally, if you are going to write in first person than there should only be one narrator. Or at least not switch back and forth as much. Given that this author writes in the style of Jane Austen, for this story it worked. I also understand why the author made this selection.

Spoilers:
I was a little disappointed by the mystery. The bathtub and pond scene made me think something more sinister had happened. But I also think it would have been hard to have such a happy ending if it had been.

I am also not a fan of the body swap trope, but recognized it provided much needed humor and moved the plot along nicely.

Finally the ending dragged a bit, but this seemed to play homage to the original story, so I could not fault it.

Overall, it was a great novel. I highly recommend it. It has just the right mix of paranormal mystery with two people slowly growing closer together. The paranormal experience forced the two of them to work together and fully see each other in a favorable light. I highly recommend this book.

I don't have much taste for ghost stories, but I truly enjoyed this.

What particularly struck me as carefully considered and well handled was Caroline Bingley's arc. Yes, we all enjoy a good Caroline setdown, but after a while (especially with all the JAFF I've read), Caroline-bashing ceases being satisfying. After all, if the point of Pride and Prejudice is the examination and improvement of one's own character, isn't it rather contradictory to follow an author's manipulation into cheering at our Caro's ritual humiliation?

Instead, this author envisioned a story that forced Caroline to experience directly the end result of runaway selfishness and then gave her a choice: is this what you really want? Darcy, too, is forced to face his culpability in stringing Caroline's hopes along past the point of decency. Caroline's choice is entirely believable given the events of the story, and that (and the conversation she has with Darcy afterward) is deeply satisfying.

I appreciated the author's skill in upending this tired humiliate Caroline fandom trope. Well done.

I loved this story and finished it in one sitting. This is one of my favorite JAFF authors who comes up with different storylines in each of her books. This time, we got a bit of paranormal, a ghost story. Netherfield looks like a haunted house and it turns out, something very weird is going on at Netherfield. Elizabeth and Darcy see, hear or feel extraordinary things... Some people from a century past were once very unhappy there, and the ghosts recognize the parallels between their own jealous anger and Miss Bingley's bitterness. There is a body swap sort of a curse but that's by far not the worst of it. This is written in alternating first person perspectives and I don't usually favor that style of narrative in a historical but I did not mind the least bit here because the author's narrative voice and ironic dialogue clicks with me. For all that the book is a bit gothic and scary, it's also quite funny, in an understated way.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. This is a clean, supernatural romance story. Darcy, but as Netherfield's ghosts begin to draw her in, so does the man she most particularly wishes to avoid. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

A really scary Regency era ghost story

Netherfield is most definitely haunted by ancestors of the Bennet and Eden family and has been seriously neglected. The rooms are dark and forbidding and both Darcy and Elizabeth start seeing ghosts! Even Caroline Bingley becomes affected by the dead spirits from over a hundred years ago.
It's most definitely different from the usual adaptations with a few new characters and quite a few missing ones. About 90% of the story revolves around Netherfield and the usual characters we have been used to seeing there.
I admit to becoming a little confused as to the families history and the exact historical events but it didn't lessen my enjoyment of experiencing this story.

Oh Man THIS WAS GOOD!

It has some slow parts but they are moments compared to the whole story. I Love It when characters grow and develop and transform. Here it was not only Darcy.
This is a scary tale and I had to put the book down last night and wait to read it in the light of day😱. I am an easily spooked person.
I did cry but laughed more than cried. The writing was wonder and given in many points of view.
I could feel hints of Heathcliff and Dark shadows in the story but twisted in a good way.
There were not any bad/villains just people making terrible mistakes and living with regrets.
Worth my time to read and enjoyed it.

Unique variation!

If you like a ghost story, this one is for you. As the title tells you, it's setting is Netherfield and the ghosts are found there. It's a bit hard to understand the actual size of mansion house, so picturing some of it was easier in some descriptions than in others, but definitely was a different type of variation than expected. It was well written and developed and will keep you reading. There are even bits of humor. Although I'm not normally a fan of first person Regency, I very much enjoyed this story! Enjoy!

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars.

I have pondered what to write about this story for several days. It is basically a ghost story. There is more than one ghost and although at first only Elizabeth is "treated" to her/their antics, Darcy is soon caught up in the "spells" cast.

Elizabeth uses her family Bible to discover some connections: which I won't disclose here. We do learn that the Bennets have family/blood connections with other owners of Netherfield.

SPOILER: This story also has Darcy and Elizabeth trading bodies...embarrassing, to say the least. I don't remember reading another story that had a man and a woman trading bodies, although I have read several in which people of the same gender swapped bodies. END OF SPOILER

I found this story interesting in that I have not read another with a premise close to this story's. This is the fifth story by this author that I have read.

This story is very good, scary, funny and full of E&D. But most strange thing about this story for me - where Mr Darcy did learn to "trick" young woman into "spoiler" as he did there (not his favourite method, indeed). I wish to know what his favourite one is. Well, may be this Mr Darcy spend too much time with Mr Wickham.
And I rated only for 4 stars, because Elizabeth in final part suddenly become a coward. This woman fight supernatural and couldn't give good set down to Mr Collins? No way.

A most excellent thrilling variation

The writing itself is worth the read. But it’s the engaging story infused with the right amount of horror, humor, romance and suspense that make this a must-read for fans of P&P variations. Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet, and surprisingly Miss Bingley, are in top form here, and most assuredly won’t disappoint.

This is the first ever variation I read of this author and I anticipate reading more of her stories.

Killer Ghosts

Neitherfield has been rented to Bingley, Jane becomes ill and Elizabeth comes to take care of her. Here ends the ordinary story and the wild one begins. A scorned woman, trying to kill her then best friend, the friend trying to save Darcy and Elizabeth and throw in Caroline Bingley for the cake topper and you've got a don't want to stop reading until the end book. Just brilliant. Buy it now.

Supernatural adventure

A surprising adventure for our favorite characters. Elizabeth is haunted by ghosts of Netherfield’s past when stays to help Jane recover. She could easily think herself going crazy if not for Mr. Darcy experiencing the same. Their growing relationship has the power to heal more than their own hearts. Coming from someone who has read over 100 P&P variations, this one was a great read.

Extremely Enjoyable Read

I rarely leave reviews but was amazed at the dialog (both spoken and inner dialog) that seemed to encompass our dear couple so well. Add to the excellent characterization a very well written, intriguing (and spooky!) plot, and I am sold. What a suspenseful, romantic, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny variation!

A terrific Gothic parody

Inventive, scary, romantic, and often humorous alternate universe where Netherfield is haunted in a frightening fashion. As Lizzy comes to take care of Jane when she takes sick at Netherfield, the story takes off on a wild ride and is a roller coaster of adventure and romance. I usually do not like gothic tales and this was very, very well done!

Delightful!

I generally do not read fantasy/supernatural/magical stories, but I’ve liked (a lot) everything else Mei Wei Lin has written so I decided to give it a try. I’m so glad that I did as I found the story to be most enjoyable with lovely versions of D&E. The story was well-paced and well-written. Looking forward to her next book!

The story begins with Jane falling ill at Netherfield and a disheveled Elizabeth arriving to care for her. Almost immediately the supernatural events begin. Both Elizabeth and Darcy see ghosts on separate occasions, but when they join forces to unravel the mystery of the haunting, the real danger begins. Although I'm not a fan of ghost stories, the denouement in this one was jawdropping.

Fantastic!

An excellent variation exploring supernatural shenanigans at Netherfield Park. This is very tightly written with the majority of the action taking place over a couple days with a very limited cast. This is an angsty read but lightened with humour and just enough romance.

Catherine Moreland would approve!

I think this is my favorite variation so far of the 50+ I have. This is also my first by this author. A delightful combination of a little spooky, mystery, and gothic romance. I felt like Catherine Moreland in Northanger Abbey.
