Emily Windsnap #2

Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep

Rate this book
An enchanting tale with a fabulous monster, engaging characters, plenty of mermaid magic, and a page-turning story, Liz Kessler's new middle-grade fantasy has all the charm and warmth of its predecessor, THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP.

Picture an island set in a glittering blue sea, sparkling with white sand and palm trees, a secret place where humans and merfolk live together and where a girl who grows a mermaid's tail when she enters the water is not considered a problem. To Emily Windsnap - half mermaid, half human - her new home is perfect. That is, until Emily ruins everything by waking a legendary sea monster known as the Kraken from its hundred-year sleep. As the Kraken rises from the deep, putting the future of the islanders in jeopardy, Emily makes a desperate attempt to save them. But how could she have dreamed that her best friend, Shona, would stop talking to her, or that Mandy Rushton, her old enemy from junior high, would turn up when least expected?

There are some books that fill your heart with brightness and exploding suns. There are some stories that wrap your body in starlight and breathe fresh air into you, protecting you from pain and harm. There are simply some tales that you will always come back to, no matter how old you are, just to seek comfort and be more in control of reality's wild spiralling.

The Emily Windsnap series will always be these books for me.

Since the moment I received the fourth book in my birthday (it can be read as a companion novel) and after finishing it and crying tears of pure joy, a feeling I haden't felt in a long time, despite the fact I was in a tender age, I knew something had changed in me. Since the moment I stepped foot in the bookstore and purchased the other free, I knew something had made my heart feel light.

And since then, in my darkest times, when I could sometimes barely remember that life is important, I read this books, and it all came back to me.

Emily, a girl from Brightport without a father, who has bullied and didn't feel good for herself, but later found out she was a mermaid, and her father was alive, kept in prison, was the main character. The girl who changed from a caterpillar toa butterfly, and in each book, she grew more and more, not just physically but also mentally. I connected to that girl in a spiritual level. I was a girl who was stigmatized from bullying for a long, long time. And I needed someone to show me that being myself was the most wonderful feeling. Emily did that. Since then, I followed her loyally in all of her adventures.

In this book, I travelled with her to her new home, where merpeople and humans lived together peacefully. Was it the quite paradise it seemed to be, though? Of course not. There was something hiding beneath the surface, a terrible monster that was sleeping its eternal sleep, until a ship crossed the Bermuda Triangle. Because then, it would wake. And it would take what belonged to it.

Emily did not wake the Kraken up before its time out of sheer curiosity. That's what I remembered, since it had been a while since I read the books. No, not at all actually. She woke it up because she wanted to be liked. She wanted friends who thought she was brave and beautiful. She wanted to be admired, and not hated and mentally tortured like in her old human school. When I realized this, something broke inside me. I shed a tear on that page, and I did not feel ashamed. Because Emily needed to learn.

Thank God she later realized what a bad, bad decision she had taken.

The writing of this book was so freshed, and as developped as a middle grade book writing can get. It made me dream, and wish, and believe, and took me out of reality, giving me my own unique place inside the story. I also adored the dual POVs, although the second one belonged to a character I do not personally like.

The plot made me cry, as always, and smile, since these books are just perfect for the summer. I realized that there were some things I did not remember about the characters. Their guide to the island (who later becomes Millie's boyfriend) was called Archie and not Arthur and Mandy Rashton actually has short hair! I felt slightly ashamed of myself because both of these mistakes were visible in my name meaning aesthetics I had made about the series a while ago.

The characters will always, always have a unique place in my heart. Not only Emily, but also her parents, who are sweet and loving and just the perfect family, Shona, her best friend who proves that being girly and feminine can make you more badass than one could realize some times, Millie, the psychic whose optimism and clear mind made me smile, Archie, our newly introduced guide with an important position of power and hell, even Mr Beeston and Mandy, will always remind me and teach me so much.

I just don't know what else to write. This is a childhood favorite for me. Plus, there are some really creepy moments in it, and the way the Kraken is described is just A+.

Also, since this is a really underrated series, if you guys have an urge to read middle grade, something mermaid related, or just a story about friendship, bravery, forgiveness and mental growth, read this series as soon as possible ♥
Until my next review
Keep swimming, fishpeople ♥

This is a cute series for young girls but I think I am a little too old for it. I like most mid grade books but this series is at the younger end. That being said I still want to finish the series. I love how Neptune puts on an air that he doesn't care but always does the right thing. I'm glad that Emily and Mandy made up at the end and I liked how the author showed both sides. Over all Emily is a nice girl and I'm glad she has her good friend.

Read for Anna's ABC&D bookclub

This book picks up shortly after the events of book 1, The Tail of Emily Windsnap. Flipping fins, their lives at Allpoints island begins with 12 year old Emily, excited about her new home, still has the same fears she did in her old home of being different and not fitting in. Her efforts t to impress brings out the bogey-mer of merfolks nightmares and she's the only one who can fix it.

"It lends itself to a touch of insomnia, getting stranded on an island the size of a pair of underpants, with nothing to eat, no way of getting home, and no one to talk to except your parents." (102)

There are some laugh out loud moments, as you can see from the above quote, and some tension grabbing ones. It is the smaller moments of life, dealing with issues of family, friendship, courage, and bullying, that make you care about these characters and what happens to them. I really loved how the issue of bullying was explored from the point of view of both girls involved. Bullying was touched on and finished off, so I thought, with aplomb in the first book, which made this a pleasant surprise. Each has insecurities, each feels there is something wrong with themselves, and they both have a need to be understood and accepted. One lashes out toward the other as a way of coping, while the other pushes the rules and does crazy things in an effort to fit in. This could be a nice way to broach the subject for adults and a way for both adults and children to see how it affects all involved.
"How could I compete with a full-time, real mermaid with stars on her tail and gold seaweed in her hair?" (28)

"I want to (help). Part of me wants to shout and cry and ask why it has to be like this. But I can't. Show her my weakness and she can hurt me even more. Forget it."(134)

This would have been 4-1/2 if not for a part of the story that just seemed too far fetched. Fearsome, formidable King Neptune was too easily swayed by characters that just made no sense to me, especially given his feelings towards these insignificant folks. Maybe future books will explain this so it makes more sense, if so I will come back and change this to a 4-1/2, for now it stays at 4. As in the first book Emily pushes and persuades her new best friend, Shona, to do things she really didn't want to do. Will Emily learn from this behavior in upcoming books, we will just have to wait and see. Emily's changes are slow but more realistic than the instant changes in some books, so she will probably continue to make mistakes, allowing us along on her adventures as she grows and matures. This ends with a little twist in the end that could have some interesting consequences for the series.

as you will see from her review below.

Anna's review This one was so good but it went too quick! The back of the book tells you that Emily gets help from someone she never wanted to see again. Then as you read the book you get clues, that was an interesting surprise I never would have thought of after the first book.

I didn't like Emily suddenly not being scared as I know I would be facing the monster alone. It was just too easy, she just talked to herself and calmed herself down, just like that, too easy.

I really like how the author showed Mandy, the bully's, point of view. Getting to see how they both felt was very interesting. I could understand why Mandy did some of the things she did, and was mad and took it out on Emily now. It made a lot of sense with everything she had to deal with at home.

This book was more thrilling than the first one, we both agree on this. Really liked this one and want to read the next one in the series. - From Anna

Anna and I agree that we liked this second book better than the first and that it was much more exciting and both give it 4-1/2 stars (maybe that should be fins). To put it in merfolk speak. Sharks alive, you won't be off your fins if you keep a gill open and put a fin on this book, but tough tails for you if you don't!

QUARTER FOUR CHOICE BOOK FOUR

The first book was SO GOOD... so what happened to this one? In the first like seventy pages, the story moved really slowly and almost nothing happens. The story line was really predictable, and the author didn't even try to put a cool twist anywhere in it. I mean, I guess I liked the fact that she told us more about the characters, like, for example, we learned why King Neptune hates when merpeople and humans have relationships. AND Liz Kessler also added some new, important characters such as Nancy. But, otherwise, this story has no effect on the full series. In the first book, she gets her father back, finds out she's a mermaid finds out her mom married a merman, and that she now gets to live on an island for mermaids. This book, we just find out about a sea monster but then they just defeat it and we're fine. Thats it. But to sum it up, I just wish the author would give the readers a bit more and have it actually effect later books!!

Emily is all set to live happily ever after with her parents, but of course it doesn't work out that way. In trying to fit in and make friends, Emily accidentally awakens the Kraken. It looks like the Kraken will destroy Allpoints Island--unless Emily can find a way to avert disaster. Her old enemy, Mandy, shows up to further complicate matters.

Not quite as good as the first book in the series, but cute.

💜Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep by Liz Kessler💜

Book Two in the Emily Windsnap series.

This was a cute sequel to the series! It was a bit harder to get into the story.. but soon enough it got my attention. Although, I found the first book more enjoyable than this second book.

I liked the character development with Emily, her mother, and her father! Emily wanted to explore and make new friends at the new place she was living.. she also got to learn an important life lesson. I loved the dynamic between Emily and her father! By the end of the book, it seemed like everything between them had been changed for the good. I especially liked seeing more of a caring mother in Emily’s mom; which I had wished there was more of in the first book. So that’s a check ✅ for me!

*I also want to note that ,in this book, there were more instances that God’s name was taken in vain, so I took away a star for that.* 😕

The plot was interesting enough. I feel like most sequels have that “This was just to fill in the space between the 1st and the 3rd book” kind of element. But I enjoyed reading this sequel to the series. I fully intend to keep continuing this fun and SWISHY series! I can see lots of younger girls enjoying this series.. if they like tales of mermaids, some action, and fantasy!

The perfect sequel to an amazing kids' adventure about family, mermaids, and, of course, facing your fears.

I think Kessler did an excellent job with developing the characters, and the alternating perspectives of Emily and *oops, can't spoil it* were so good as they both had different perspectives in everything even though they both didn't come from very much to start out with.

I feel like there was nothing that needed to be changed about this sequel. I feel like we can identify with Emily and her friends as they go through all life's most difficult situations while solving mysteries and staying faithful to what -- or whom -- they love most.

Definitely a ***** read for me, nothing more, nothing less!

This is the sequel to the Tail of Emily Windsnap. I enjoyed the first book, despite it's young adult status ;) It was not as descriptive as the first book, but in this book the ocean and undersea life are more known to our young mermaid so the wonder is wearing off a bit. The insecurity that the heroine felt in the last book is also dealt with in this book. One of the main differences in this book is the duel perspective. Half the chapters are written from Emily's perspective and half are written from her arch nemesis of the previous book Mandy. It seemed like the author was trying to make Mandy a bit more likable, or at least explain why she was so mean and going for sympathy but it really didn't work. In an attempt to impress her new mermaid friends, and feeling insecure about being the only half human/half mermaid, Emily accidentally awakens the Kraken by going into the forbidden lagoon. Since she woke it up she is the only one who can get it back under control as Neptune's pet. Neptune is once again a big bully who just wants to cause destruction on the humans this time with the Kraken and of course being a former human herself Emily does not want this. One of my biggest problems with this book was no one changed, yeah there was the "forgiveness" between Emily and Mandy but both really stayed the same as individuals at the end.

First of all I hadn't had the chance to read the original book and didn't know this was a sequel until I had already picked it up. As a result I cannot say anything about the series or even place the book itself in a comparable study compared to the others in the series although one friend really likes the third book the best and others say the first was good but that is from others' viewpoints.

To me the book was too flat and emotionless since it was basically the same issue times two with a bunch of complaining from both protagonists who didn't learn anything but how to make things worse even when they were trying to make things right. Meanwhile the tone of the book seemed really girly and although I know I wasn't of the targeted crowd it read of the drama relating to overly dramatic fifth to middle aged children.

The reading of the book was simple and easy so it would make for a good book for those who are working on expanding their reading to easy-type chapter books. In the end even if you are a fan of YA or mermaids I wouldn't recommend this book unless you are part of the related audience who doesn't mind for overdoing things.

It is a terrible misfortune that the popular book series about being a mermaid is told through the perspective of someone who only wants to fit in.

A cute read that follows Emily's journey to a secret island with her parents, her quest to make new friends and fit in better and her adventure with the Kraken, the monster that controls the sea and must not be woken up.
Love the way everyday sayings have been adapted to fit mermaids..
'Keeping a gill out for kraken related activity'
'What in the ocean?!'
'Are you off your fins boy?'
'Sharks alive!'
'Are you pulling my tail?'
Very cleverly done and gives the book a funny touch!

This book is very good, the story is about the protagonist trying to impress her new mermaid friends at her new home, which led to her waking up a monster from the deep, the kraken, at the wrong time. This monster was suppose to keep humans away from their home, to keep them from finding out about mermaids. I kinda don't like how she let her feeling of trying to fit into the mermaid world get the best of her because she ended up making a huge mistake, that led into a dangerous situation but she learned from her mistake in the end and fixed it. I learned that, you have to think first before you do something that you know might cause trouble or anything else.

Book 2 in an interesting and surprisingly unique middle grade series. Emily continues to let her adventurous streak and need to be accepted get the best of her... this time unleashing a monster set on demolishing everything! I adore this spunky and brave little girl, probably because she reminds me a little of myself- so desperate that new start would fix everything that she gets a bit TOO eager and messes it all up. Important lessons about friendship, being yourself, forgiveness, and the true value of riches.

review of the first book

An adequate, readable sequel to the first Emily book with some nice surprises, despite a less gripping plot. While it’s not disappointing in any specific way, I feel as though reading Emily alone would be adequate and I wouldn’t push people to complete the whole series based on this sequel.

The plot, first of all, is switched up some—we’re focusing on a big evil monster, not so much on Emily’s internal self-discovery. As in any good book, the monster sets the stage for Emily’s insecurities, but this plot feels almost phoned-in as a fairly typical monster-of-the-week setup that betrays the ingenuity of the original book.

With that said, it’s not bad; just not the refreshing bite of the first book. I still read this all in one sitting, and I still enjoyed it all; it just didn’t bring me to the verge of tears or make me laugh out loud. This is only dull in comparison to its predecessor, and then not even very much so.

The real reason this gets 4 stars, though, is for what Kessler attempted with Mandy. Very early on, we realize we’re getting not one but two narrators this time around—and our second is Mandy. This is a great choice, and one I think could have been even better utilized to humanize Mandy and overall spread a positive message of support and love between women. In the book, the two get a pretty simple “you have to apologize or the world ends” dynamic, which is a shame; I’d have really liked them to sit down and ask why their relationship went the way it did. Kessler wrote a stereotypical mean girl in the first book, and now she’s stuck trying to understand her POV—which is hard, because she was never meant to be realistic. It feels as though Kessler gives up just when she’s closest to really connecting the reader to Mandy, which is a shame. Still: major props for even trying this, because it’s important and very enjoyable and unique.

As usual, I go too deep into a children’s book. This is not a bad book, I say, again! It’s just not as good as Emily, which isn’t really a fair comparison, because nothing is as good as Emily. I would recommend this if your criteria for the rest of the series is that it be enjoyable; I wouldn’t if you’re busy and not a completionist. We’ll see if things change, though, when I read Book 3…

UPDATE: I read Book 3! And would now recommend reading this just to read Book 3. Again, absolutely nothing wrong with this.

So Emily's story picks up with she and her parents arriving to the new Island home Neptune granted them. It is a paradise Island called Point Island. It is located at the Bermuda Triangle. She needs up with her friend Shona who moved with her parents too. They meet up with two other merpeople, Marina and Alfie who take them on a tour of their school down in underwater caves. They also show them Neptune's meeting place and a special cove. The dare/convince them to go into the cove and later that night the girls do. While exploring they move a large Boulder and awaken the Kraken. The Kraken is awake 100 years and sleeps100 years but they awoke it after only 92 years and the Kraken, Neptune's loyal pet, is now rampaging out of control. They marration jumps back and forth between Emily and Mandy, who ends up on a cruise that her mother won. Her parents are fighting all the time and have been for years and Mandy is miserable with her life. With help of Mandy and Shona, Emily must get the Kraken under control.

I'm pretty sure I read this a few years ago, but if I did, I completely forgot 90% of what happened, haha. I did enjoy this one, but definitely not as much as the first. Emily seemed so whiny throughout almost this entire book, and while it was probably realistic, it was kind of annoying... I really did love the ending though and I can't wait to read the next book!

I...do not remember this one too well but I remember I used to be so proud of myself (I was in 1st grade okay) for reading a somewhat "scary" book. I think this book was like a Kraken was released or something and I remembered one of my friends said she didn't finish this book because it was too scary and I was so proud of myself lol and thats all I remember of this book

This book was awesome. I loved it. Emily and Mandy became friends again after Mandy was jealous of Emily for being "perfect". It turned out that Emily and Shona where both afraid to talk to each other for they thought the other would be mad. This book was a thrilling adventure. It deserved a 5 star review.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I kept thinking 2 or 3 as I read. Was about the same as the first book. It was ok. At least it had some surprises but I feel as if the writing and characters are still... weak? Not the worst though. I'd still read another in the series. Better for kids.

My only complaint is that they say Oh my God a lot. Other than that, I love it!
