Much better than the unrelated anime. It makes the story much more “realistic”

Another adorable volume of fun tales! This collection has a very short story chapter on Bulbasaur, another visit of a tribe of Clefairy, and than a large section devoted to the Pokemon League and ends with Ash's decision to travel the Orange Islands. It hits on most of the plot points of the anime, but with the large chunk of details cut from the story, it makes for a choppy read. Again, I'd only recommend this title to huge Pokemon fans or younger audiences just being introduced to manga. It really sucks that the characterization and campy adventures are put on a fast-forward almost; although the chemistry between Ash and Misty has been amplified. One final volume of the Pikachu series to go!

Really love the Pokémon franchise, mostly the games and anime! This this was an alright quick 20 chapters manga about ash’s original Pokémon journey in the Kant’s region and the orange islands part😁👌

Well, that was a fun, quick read. From what I can tell of this one volume (I haven't read the rest of this series yet) this series loosely followed the plot of the tv show, but with a slightly edgier tone. Even the beloved characters were a little less Goody-Two-Shoes and a little more flawed, which made them less lovable, but more interesting. We also get some pretty intense Pokemon battles with Watership Down levels of animal violence.
Speaking of an edgier tone, the shonen art style and tweaked designs of the characters and Pokemon were a completely awesome (and occasionally terrifying) departure from the tv show. Just take a gander at this depiction of Gyarados from the first volume of this series:
I'm pretty sure Ash needed a new pair of pants after that incident. I know I would.
Long story short, if you're a long-time Pokefan and are looking for something nostalgic and Pocket Monster-related to read, definitely give this one a shot.

In this volume, Ash helps solve a mystery about a sudden burgeoning Clefairy population, busts one of Team Rocket's scams, competes in the Kanto Pokemon League, and signs up for the Orange Islands Pokemon League.
At this point in the manga, Ash, Misty, and Brock are the best of friends, but know when to take breaks from hanging out to pursue their own ambitions. Although it took time for Misty and Brock to get close to Ash (because they're older than Ash), Ritchie and Ash become best friends instantly and see a lot of themselves in each other. James really doesn't seem cut out for Team Rocket and only seems to be in it to impress Jessie. Meowth is pretty depressed in one of these chapters and deals with it by spending time away from Jessie and James, which just seems to make him more depressed. I think there's an implication that he's happier when he's with his friends.
Themes include having hope, appreciating the little things in life, learning when to let go, not judging a book by its cover, saying what's in your heart, stepping out of your comfort zone, knowing when to throw in the towel, putting other's needs before your own, and not being hard on yourself.

After a second reread I think this book deserves another star. It really closes out Ash’s Indigo League journey well. Plus anytime Muk makes it on the field is totally worth the price of admission.
And this one has a much more intense ending then the episodes in the anime. Instead of Charizard just choosing not to battle and Ash being eliminated instead he loses control of Charizard while battling Richie’s Charley and seriously hurts the other Charizard. A much more dramatic battle reaction.
Another beautifully drawn volume by Toshihiro Onl. His Venasaur and Gyarados are especially majestic looking. I wish he would get another crack at the series.

My parents somehow won a set of Ono's four-volume Pokemon manga, and my brother and I argued over them for hours. We both loved Pokemon and liked this series - and only liked because it was a lot different from the TV show in content, a surprise both fascinating and confusing. The manga was darker and more violent than the show was, portraying characters a little less cliched and lovable; I appreciate that more now than I did at eight.
This is a fun read for Pokemon fans.
