The final book in Davidson’s laugh-out-loud trilogy featuring an unconventional FBI agent who finds love in the most unexpected places. Cadence (and her sisters) has moved in with Patrick and everything is more than she could have ever dreamed. Except why does the dreamy Dr. Gallo keep popping up unexpectedly in her fantasies? When her pleasantly steady love life suddenly starts looking pretty darn shaky, Cadence and her sisters find themselves knee-deep in a new case that brings the escaped Threefer Killers back onto the scene. The stakes are higher, the danger more real, the hijinks more hilarious, and the love and passion are more delicious in this final book of an unforgettable trilogy.
Candace has been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. Her “sisters” as she calls them, the other personalities that reside in her same body, both help and hinder Candace as she works for a special department of the FBI which reasons that the best way to catch a sociopath is a sociopath. Candace is working with a therapist to co-exist with her personalities so that they are not so much separate identities but facets of one personality. This way the alternative personalities don’t feel threatened and try to take over the main personality and Candace actually starts to heal from the trauma of her childhood. While working through her past family issues and trying to learn how to live with her boyfriend, Candace must also catch a trio of serial killers.
Even a brief description of the plot line reveals that Davidson has a quirky sense of humor. I enjoy how this plays throughout each book and the series. While there is a lot of dark areas of Candace’s past, Davidson deals with those issues with research, sincerity, and humor. While there are some funny moments, Davidson has done her research into personality disorders and shows how they interact with the world in a real way. I also like how the people with personality disorders are getting help from a therapist and a place to work. A lot of fantasy and scifi books and series have people with a lot of issues that never get help for those issues. Here, Davidson uses Candace’s recovery and growth as the driving force in the series arc. Well done I say, well done.
If you like reading strange quirky humorous novels with a science fiction bent, about people with personality disorders catching serial killers than give this series a try.
Cadence Jones is an FBI agent for BOFFO, a branch of the FBI that is completely staffed by individuals with mental disorders. Her partner is the crass sociopath, George. Together they are working on a murder investigation where the killer is making it appear his victims committed suicide. During their search for the killer they are hit with the news that BOFFO has lost its funding and they are faced with the fact that this very well could be their final case.
Meanwhile, Cadence has finally decided to take the plunge and move in with her boyfriend, Patrick. And, she’s bringing her ‘sisters’ aka her alternate personalities along for the ride, which may prove to be too much for all involved when Cadence finds herself daydreaming of one Doctor Gallo instead of the man she’s now sharing a home with.
I have to say this book is like nothing I’ve ever read before. I have not read the earlier installments in the series and found it to be quite a shock to learn that the lead character had multiple personalities. At times, especially early in the book, it made things a bit confusing not knowing which personality was actually in charge and conversing with those around her. It does get easier to determine as the book goes on and you start to understand the author’s writing style and the different personalities of the alter-egos. But it definitely takes some time to get used to.
This novel is marketed as a romance, but in my opinion, the romance was pretty muted during the majority of this book and it felt more like a cozy mystery as Cadence and her BOFFO friends hunted a killer. The romance really started to bloom at the end of the story, and I found it to be really nice and I only wish we had gotten more of it!
Overall, this book was an okay read, but ultimately just wasn’t my kind of story, not to say it was bad by any means. It was just different from what I’m used to. I also found the ending to be quite abrupt and I was expecting there to be another chapter or two and there wasn’t which was especially surprising considering this is the last installment of the series. But if you’re looking for an interesting mystery with a quirky lead character, then this one might be for you!
This was the third book in the Cadence Jones trilogy by MaryJanice Davidson. I have Ms. Davidson pretty much on auto read, so this book was a given. The first book in the trilogy, Me, Myself and Why? came out to very mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it. I found the second book, Yours, Mine and Ours not quite as good as the first, but sometimes that happens. This book however, really brought it all together and ended it on a good, if surprising, note.
This is the story is of Cadence Jones and her two "sisters" Shiro and Adrienne. Cadence has multiple personality disorder and has since she was a child who witnessed her parents murder/suicide. Cadence is also a member of a secret FBI group called BOFFO or Bureau of False Flags Ops division. All of the members of BOFFO have some kind of mental illness, from her partner George who is a clinical sociopath, to a member of the crime scene team with kleptomania, and the office secretary who is agoraphobic. They all work together to fight crime, looking at things through a slightly skewed lens to track down killers.
Cadence, Shiro and Adrienne all know about each other and see each other as separate individuals who just happen to live in the same body. Cadence is the tall, blonde, blue-eyed Scandinavian decent primary personality, Shiro is a small logical, dangerous Asian woman and Adrienne is the red haired, fire starting wild child. Adrienne's appearances are sporadic and erratic. While on the other hand, Shiro and Cadence were the more dominant personalities with some differences. Shiro could look through Cadence's eyes and know what was going on, but Cadence could not. Cadence would then come back not knowing the date, time or even geographic location of where she was.
This book is the one that brings out all the secrets, lies and brings the sisters the closest to reintegration that they have ever been. I know that the reviews for the previous two books have been very diverse, but if you have read the first one, or the first and second, you must read this one. It completely flips everything we thought we knew on its head and changes the rules. I was very impressed how Ms. Davidson pulled it all together and made it make sense. I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads for shocking me with the outcome.
First sentence: "I'm moving in with my boyfriend, the one I share with two other women, and I'm doing this because we're in love, and want to live together and make a family, our own family, and not because I'm desperate to do one normal thing."
Cadence Jones (and Shiro and Adrienne) is moving in with her baker boyfriend, Patrick. She is excited to finally have a real boyfriend and do a normal thing like move in with him. Unfortunately, duty calls and serial killers don't catch themselves. And, of course, Dr. Gallo is back on the scene making things difficult. Plus, something is up with BOFFO. It's enough to make a sane person crazy, not to mention an FBI agent with multiple personalities.
I really enjoy this series, and this installment in particular was great. The author does a great job showing the progress Cadence (and Shiro and Adrienne) are making. The case in this book was also very interesting. The author does a very good job in portraying mental disorders in a sensitive and factual manner while making an entertaining and funny book. There are many surprises in store for the reader in this book which makes it even better.
My only problem with this book was that the "sisters" did not have as distinctive voices as they have had in previous chapters. This may have been the author's intention to show how they are moving closer to reintegration. It made it a little difficult to read, but still quite enjoyable.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good laugh or people who like humorous mysteries. It is a quick, light read.
I won this book! I was so incredibly excited to win an ARC (Advance Reading Copy) that I actually didn't believe I won. Then the book showed up in the mail and I started to believe it.
I am a huge fan of MaryJanice Davidson. This series has been quirky but fun and I have been awaiting the release of the final book. I wasn't sure how things would wrap up but knew it would be good.
To be honest and if given the opportunity to, I would give this book 3.5 stars instead of the 4 I've given it. The reason I went with 4 instead of 3 stars was the ending. I loved how the book ended.
Getting back to the review... The book was hard to follow at times, meaning I had trouble determining which character was talking. It could be that the ARC missed an edit that the full release copy gets (?).
This book starts with the girls (Cadence, Shiro, & Adrienne) moving in with boyfriend Patrick. Naturally Moving Day is interrupted by a murder that Cadence & her partner George have to investigate. Again. The investigation and uncovered details lead to a good ending for this series.
I enjoyed the slow closure and wrap up of the story. Giving more of a story to Michaela really tied this story up fairly neatly. The ending was absolutely priceless!
I really like this series. I have to say that I was a little sad that there wasn't very much Adrienne though. I find her exploits quite fun. Shiro is by far my favorite though as she is a kick ass heroine and clearly has all the brains of the operation. Cadence is the real chick but she is too wishy-washy for me. So what is this whole book about? Well Cadence is a multiple, she and her two "sisters" work for a division of the FBI, solving crimes and putting away criminals. This book picks up exactly where the previous book left off so Cadence is preparing to move in with her beau and have a perfect life. Nothing is ever that simple for her and soon she has a whole lot more to handle and with multiples, this can sometimes be too much. I really liked the direction this book took the series and found it once again colorful on the local commentary and genuinely amusing. I will continue to read this series as long as it lasts.
I devoured this book. Though I was not shocked to find out about BOFFO, I was surprised that it was a major plot point. And the resolution of the actual murder case was a bit of a letdown, but circumstances being what they were, it made sense.
What I liked the most about this book was the tension built up between Cadence/Shiro (Adrienne was thankfully absent a lot) and Dr. Gallo. It was nothing short of amazing. The scene in the car where Gallo gives her(them) a ride home left me near breathless. I'm still smiling about it.
I tried to get into Davidson's Queen Betsy series a while ago but I gave it up after the first book. I thought the sex scenes were great but I found her gratuitous use of profanity and violence off-putting. After reading this series, I may try visiting Betsy again.
Bizarre, funny, gonzo, and a great love story all in one package. An enjoyable conclusion to Davidson's trilogy about BOFFO, the strangest FBI Bureau that may or may not exist.
Building on the premise of "It takes a thief to catch a thief", BOFFO uses certifiably wacko agents to catch serial killers and other people with twisted minds. Our heroine is Candace/Shiro/Adrienne, an agent with multiple personalities that come to the fore depending on the moment and the need. It takes a special man to love the three of them, and the girls think they've found their guy. First though, they have to figure out who the latest serial killer is to target the Twin Cities, and how to make sure BOFFO doesn't lose its funding.
This is the third book in the Cadence Jones series and it wraps up the series well. I adored the banter between Cadence and her partner George. It is entertaining to see Cadence cope as her world goes upside down and the rules change completely. Cadence has to deal with the unexpected in her romantic life and in a professional capacity. Cadence and her sisters deal with their personal issues as they pursue a unique serial killer. The book was extremely difficult to put down and made me laugh at times. The book deals with disorders in a sensitive manner and weaves them effortlessly into the story.
I liked this book better than the other two books for the simple fact Cadence's growth is awesome. How she, Shiro and Adrienne have changed and melded together from the first book is amazing and I believe she became not only a better multiple but a better person and character. The killer storyline in this book was a bit anticlimatic but that was okay because the journey of Cadence/Shiro/Adrienne was what it was all about and the twist at the end was totally worth reading this series. Nice to see a HEA for this origionally troubled heroine.
I love it! It was the best, and the funniest of the series. I was very sad to learn it would be the last book. I wanted more Cadence and George.
Cadence must find a killer who makes his victims looks like suicides. Cadence is moving in with her baker/boyfriend Patrick. But all is not well when she keeps having naughty thoughts about Dr. Gallo. Everything changes when Cadence finds out BOFFO has lost its fundings, not to mention its darkest secret it's yet to be revealed.
I was very satisfied with the ending. It left me with a warm, glowing feeling :)
I thought this was a very different kind of story. I had not read the previous installments and found the multiple personalities of the lead character to be quite a suprise. And, it was pretty hard getting used to that aspect and figuring out which 'sister' had control of the body, especially early in the book.
This story was marketed as a Romance but felt like a Cozy Mystery to me.
The book does get better as time goes on, but really just wasn't my kind of read.
Full Review written for Open Book Society and can be found on their blog.
Well, in this, Cadence Jones book, we have Cadence and her sisters trying to solve a couple of deaths, find the Two-Left-of-the-ThreeFer, deciding on a single name for their new pet dog, and moving in with Patrick. Oh, and did I mention--they have also lost their funding, so the whole crew is in danger of being RIF'ed? (RIF=Reduction in Forces for those of you who don't speak Government Speak, since God forbid that they should just say they are going to FIRE a government employee, right?) Yet another of Davidson's fun and breezy works.
While I enjoyed the first two books in the series the third didn't really do it for me. At this point in time it looses some of it's charm. I for one was a bit concerned about Cadence at this time and was all for her and her sisters "uniting" for lack of a better word. The scene with the boyfriend falls flat and it broke my heart. Also the ending was a complete disappointment. It was very anti-climatic. Fans of the series may want to read this just to tie up loose ends, but it was not my favorite work by Davidson.
Not exactly a romance. Not really a mystery. Elements of both= a very funny book! I like Cadence Jones & her sisters. They discover that they aren't really in love w/Patrick the Baker, but more like a serious case of LIKE. They find the guy for them & save BOFFO (which isn't really a part of the FBI after all) & solve the serial killings (w/Black George's help--sort of) that have been troubling their city.
This is an interesting book. The lead is schizopenic. multiple personalities. and working for BoFFo. a supposed offshoot of FBI. all the people in this organization are medically challenged. but they chase and catch serial killers because they are of the same mind in some cases. It was entertaining and I laughed in places. I did have trouble with some of the writing style but all in all entertaining story. Try it and see if you like it.
First I have to say I read everything by Davidson, I find her humor and writing style very readable. Apparently this is the 3rd of a trilogy, which is probably a good thing as the premise is quite strange. A woman with multiple personality disorder works for a secret law enforcement agency that employs, shall we say, misfits. The reader must pay attention to the interaction between the 3 personalities. Each book is also a murder mystery. So Unique and fun.
I loved this trilogy, and I'm pretty damned depressed that it's over. The snarky, sarcastic humor is right up my alley. Don't get me wrong, I love the Betsy Taylor, Queen of the Vampires novels, but I'm really going to miss Cadence, Shiro, and Adrienne. And I'm really going to feel the loss of George Pinkman, sociopath extraordinaire.
Read this book during my convalescence it was pretty good. The end seemed rushed. I enjoyed the characters so the end of the trilogy is kind of sad but not lamentable. The mystery aspect in this book takes the way way back seat, it was almost as though solving it was an afterthought to solving all the character issues developed in previous 2books.
I really like the characters in this series...but the last 2 books have been sliding down the quality hill. Glad the trilogy is done. Great laugh out loud moments. Tied up all the loose ends. Although seriously that main one was way too easy. unfortunately i just can't get over being pissed at the 30+ page scene from the last book being cut and pasted into this one. What a waste of space!
This is a fun book & conclusion to the trilogy. Davidson manages to make the characters with their various psychological issues funny, yet not make fun of them, and the quirks of human minds make for some pretty interesting reading. Light, amusing, and not very serious, it left me smiling.
I didn't know how MJD would wind up this series in a way that would WORK for me. Turns out, she totally could and did. I love the ending, love the romance, love the main characters. Selectively recommend because it really wouldn't work unless you had read the first two.
very happy with how this ended :) I will truly miss Candice and Shiro (ok i will even miss Adrienne a little bit!!!) I am so grateful for this trilogy because it introduced me to a great author!! so freken funny!!!!
Maybe I read this too close to the 2nd volume, but the 3rd volume had my head in a whirl by the plot twists that had the characters dancing like puppets. A decent book, just not as satisfying an ending. Also, the release of tension at the end may spell the end of this series.
