Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

A fairly cute one.

Didn't we all dream about finding buried treasure in our backyard? Although, I'm going to have to be practical and say I'm sure the money they found wasn't legal tender anymore, and it's kinda hilarious that they just took the old yellowed bills to the mall and bought walkmans and earrings, lol. Also, if all my classmates thought I stole money and I had a very simple, easy explanation that would make my parents mad, but not all my friends, I would have fessed up immediately.

The whole side plot where half the school bullies treasury candidate Peter Dehaven is just tiring -- these kids be bullying someone in every single damn SVT book!

I always loved these books as a kid. I preferred books that centred around Elizabeth though. Jessica is just not a nice girl. Also Elizabeth’s friend Amy is a nasty person in this book. Like really really nasty.

Again Jessica (and even Saint Elizabeth as she picks on poor Peter) are horrible people in this book and go unpunished. The Wakefield parents are really the worst lol.

Even Amy was a massive bitch in this one. Kids can be so cruel.

(Still adore this series and I've been secretly loving revisiting it after reading it 20 years ago!)

Buried Treasure
Ellen’s brother Mark is upset because the cat attacked his bird and killed it, and he wants to give it a funeral. While he’s digging, he discovers a treasure box. Jessica and Ellen immediately decide they don’t want to share the treasure with him so, Jessica makes up a story that he bumped her ankle (that she got in a previous book from falling off a ladder trying to scare Steve). So, they send Mark to get her crunches while they go through the box. They find 200.00, some photos, and a bunch of love letters. The love letters are from a man named William (a gardener's son) to a woman named Jane. William apparently isn’t good enough for Jane’s father, but he’s loved her from the first time he’s laid eyes on her. So, he asks her to meet him one night and elope. The letters stop there and their fate is unknown. Elizabeth is at home with Amy working on her campaign slogan for treasurer against Peter DeHaven. She and Amy make fun of him a little bit before Mark shows up and they go to search Jessica’s room.Liz discovers Jessica hasn’t sold any of the candy bars for the trip to Disneyland. (hmm, maybe that’s how they ends up at the Enchanted Forest tickets probably cheaper tickets).

Jessica strolls in without a care in the world loaded with shopping bags. She tells Elizabeth, she just holding them for Ellen. Then she says she “luckily” found a Walkman like the one that she had that she accidentally messed up by leaving outside in the rain. She says she “found it” on a bench outside Sweet Valley Fashions. At school, Amy comes up with the slogan “Elizabeth Makes Cents (Sense).” In Mrs. Wyler’s class, Liz is surprised to see Jessica (and Ellen) raise her hand to turn in money for the candy.

All the Wakefields end up going to Dari Burger later They see Peter DeHaven, but he’s tried to change his appearance from brown pants, belt, socks, and shoes to surfer shorts (still with the brown socks and shoes). To make it worse the price tag is still on the shorts. Some guy comes by and yanks the tag, and this sets off Steve and then everyone in DB is cracking up. (What does Alice do? Give her children “a disapproving look” instead of blasting them out and go making them apologize). Liz says he might be kinda cute if someone helped him out in the style department but when Steve teases her about having a crush on him she says “GROSS!” (Nope Liz. I wouldn’t. He turns into a butthole years later). Peter bravely tries again this time with brown socks and white sneakers (which is funny because sometimes I have an Uncle that I’ve seen wear before). The Unicorns think this is hilarious and plan a trick.

The next day the candy money goes missing. Right after class, Liz sees Ellen show off her new earrings to Lila. Lila says she knows they cost a fortune. Liz thinks this is odd but brushes it off. Jessica wouldn’t steal. Mark also thinks something is off. Ellen licked him when he tried to tell his parents about the treasure claiming she didn’t want to have to give the letters back. So Mark waits until she’s not home from school and reads the letters. One of them mentions 200.00. Then Ellen comes home with Jessica talking about her earrings (that cost 55.00) and putting them away so her mom won’t ask about them. Mark finds out he’s definitely been PLAYED! Ellen finds Mark in the closet and they get into it. He demands his money and says if she doesn’t he’ll tell. Ellen tells Jessica tho, she has a plan.

Liz is at home working on her speech and having writer’s block. She goes in Jessica’s room and notices the bag of clothes that are supposed to be “Ellen’s” then she sees the still full box or candy and a receipt for the Walkman. (Why would Lila want an orange, sweatshirt with a lion on it? That’s just not something I see her wearing). Mark immediately tries to tell his mother when she comes home, but when their mother comes to question Ellen about the money she’s hidden all the evidence (the box and the earrings) and blames Mark for eating too much sugar. Liz also tries to confront Jess when she gets home, but she says Ellen said she could borrow the clothes, she’worked with Ellen to sell her candy first, and the Walkman she sticks to her ground and says she found it at Casey’s Place. But Liz points out last time she said Sweet Valley Fashions. Jess says she doesn’t remember.

The Unicorns all show up with brown socks and white sneakers. Amy gets in Janet’s face about it. Janet, them implies that *she* was the one that stole the money. Ken even asks if maybe she just *fogot* that she’s got the money somewhere. Seeing that Ken is practically saying she stole the money too she goes in the bathroom and cries. Later she confesses at lunch to Liz, Liz then implies in a scenario without saying names what she suspects Jessica and Ellen did. Amy tho gets it and goes over to Caroline Pearce. Afterward, everyone starts to freeze Jessica and Ellen out. We learn that Jessica has been keeping the box and the earrings at her place.

Elizabeth gets in Amy’s face about what she started and they have an argument which ends with Liz walking off with Ken. Of course this adds more fuel to the fire. Later, Amy gets it in her head that Ken likes Liz. So, she decides to make him jealous. She tells Liz she quits being her campaign manager. Then she asks Peter if she can be his campaign manager. (I’m starting to notice Amy didn’t just start being nasty in HS.). Jessica and Liz fall out bc Liz straight up accuses Jess to her face and she denies it. Now they aren’t speaking. At dinner, her father says he has a secret but it’s not the right time. (Ned you REALLY should have kept that secret!) Even Unicorns start giving Jess and Ellen the cold shoulder.

As Peter gets more popular (because of the makeover from Amy), Jess and Ellen get more unpopular. Their teacher Mrs. Wyler calls them out about the money. They stick to their story. She gives them the benefit of the doubt but says they better not be lying or they’ll have the class to answer to. Jessica switched’s Liz’s notebook with hers to copy her homework and then switches it back in the morning but her campaign speech was in Jessica’s notebook. Liz finds out and blows up at Jessica. Jessica tells Ellen they have to tell everyone the truth. (Peter btw turned his speech into a Johnny Buck concert and gives himself the alias “Rockin Peter”. Elizabeth and Amy run an errand for Mr. B and find themselves locked in a supply closet but in the closet is the money.

Jessica has been dreaming off a woman coming back to money and one shows up at Ellen’s. It’s Jane’s granddaughter who was in the area and wanted to see the old house. The mothers show up and after reading the letters she gets emotional She’s in the same situation and makes her decision. Her grandmother didn’t marry William. Laura has been dating another guy (David) and being pressured to marry him but she decides to go with her heart. She lets them keep the money but they have to give the rest to Mark. Liz apologizes and says they find the money. Amy and Ken make up. Olivia makes president and Elizabeth makes treasure.

My Thoughts: NEVER GET INVOLVED WITH THE BOOSTERS! I don’t know how it escaped my attention how HORRIBLE Amy is even before SVH and it all started when she joined the Boosters. In this one she uses Peter to make Ken jealous. She cuts Elizabeth off cold and cancels their friendship and her promise to help her run. She throws Jessica and Ellen under the bus just because everyone blames *her* which is a bitch move! Then Peter spends time letting Amy upgrade him and allows Janet to convince him to perform with them and in SVH ends back updating Amy and turns into a JERK! Again AFTER Amy transforms him in middle school. THE IRONY! In Keeping Secrets (the next book) I also remember Amy turning her back on Elizabeth because she didn’t tell her the secret. Why Liz didn’t see her *true* colors in middle school I don’t know.

I remember when I first read this I thought Peter should have won. He had the most entertaining speech for sure. Rockin Peter? Not sure if that’s the best alias (stage name) but.. But when I re-read it did any of them (Liz or Peter) really have any experience handling money? Liz said she did but it never mentioned *what* her experience was. Everyone thinking she’s mature and responsible should NOT have been a qualification. But this is SV why would you need logic?

I can see why the class went hard on Jessica and Ellen. Interesting that they did NOT go to Disney land but when to a fever dream park known as “The Enchanted Forest”. But I think the mothers were a little unreasonable. They didn’t exactly *take* the money from someone. They *found* it buried in the backyard. I agree they should have shared it with Mark tho. When I first read this I wondered if as old as the money was they could even still use it. It was probably ancient and yellowed by this point. It’s weird too that the year this book was written 200.00 seemed like a fortune. Still I wish I could find 200.00 or any money buried in MY backyard.

Rating: 7 This is a book I had and lost in my SVT collection and was happy to find it again online.

Jessica and Ellen find a pile of money and spend it without telling anyone about the treasure, right at the same time that the money for the class trip is discovered to be missing. Honestly, I liked how Jessica was given the stinkeye for this one, simply because she's done so many things in the past that people naturally suspect her. But she doesn't learn anything from the experience really, even when she comes clean it all comes out right in the end. Which seems somehow unfair.

I'm siding with Elizabeth on this one.

This story was dry af. Jessica and Ellen Riteman find a box of treasure with $200 in Ellen's back garden. There was a potentially awesome story there with the love letters but it didn't get more a half page resolution.
No fat shaming, instead we moved onto bullying Peter for wearing brown socks instead of white (why was that an issue, lol). The main thing I got out of this book was s mention of mimeograph paper, which led me into a Google deep dive (a mimeograph was essentially a photocopier before they existed. Now you don't need to waste your time Googling!)

Aw, look how cute Ellen is on the cover! And she's so normal here, not the ditz she is usually portrayed as.

I love how they use old bills from the early 1900s and not only do cashiers accept them, but don't even question it. I know it's still legal currency, but it should have raised some eyebrows.

Sweet Valley Twins 10 - Buried Treasure
Jessica, Ellen and Mark (her younger brother, who didn’t exist in SVK 🤔) find a metal box in the Ritemans backyard. The girls open it, and find $200, pictures and letters from 1928. William, a poor gardeners son, is begging Jane to elope with him, and sends her $200 to do it! That’s like $3500 today, poor guy. The girls split the money and only share the letters and photos. Of course, they spend it all at the mall and have to lie about holding stuff for each other. Meanwhile, Liz is running for Treasurer against Peter DeHaven, who gets picked on a lot, but is trying to dress more like the other kids. Amy is in charge of the money raised for the class trip, and it’s now gone missing. I’m sensing a theme… Anyway, Liz starts to suspect Jessica’s new found wealth is related to the missing money. Ellen’s brother finds out about the $200 and blackmails the girls into getting his share, but they trick him. Liz confides her fears to Amy, who feels like she’s getting blamed for the missing class trip money. Amy tells Caroline and then it’s all over school. Liz and Amy fall out, and no one is talking to Jess or Ellen. Amy even goes so far as siding with Peter against Liz for the election, and Liz is upset and confused. Liz accuses Jess of taking the money, Jess doesn’t come clean about how she got her stuff so now they’re not talking. Jess also manages to accidentally take Liz’s speech, so Liz blows it, finds out it was Jess’s fault, and Jess tells Ellen they have to come clean about the money 👏🏻 Amy apologises to Liz when they accidentally get locked in a cupboard… and find the missing money! Coincidentally (😒) Jane’s granddaughter drops by Ellen’s to see her grandmothers house, but she looks so much like Jane the girls think she’s a ghost and confess everything, just as their mothers show up 🧐 But James granddaughter is just happy to get the letters because she’s in the same situation and takes this all as a sign not to make the same mistake Jane did. She’s so happy she lets them keep the money. Mark gets some too. Oh and Liz wins treasurer, like that was in doubt 🤦🏼‍♀️
My rating - 6/10 - It was a little overly complicated with a few different plots, but that also made it more enjoyable.

Oh my god. I don't know why i picked up this book. It looked intriguing, I guess. The story itself is decent, I suppose. It's the characters I hate.

Words can't freaking describe how much I hate Jessica. I always have. When I first picked up a book from this series, the older boy, I learned just how much I hated her. If you don't believe me, read my review. The book sucked.

So this time, I decided to give the series another shot - it can't hurt, can it? And this way I'll know if that one book was just bad and the rest of the series is okay. Hey - you never know!

But I was sorely mistaken. This book had no backbone. Like, literally, all it is is a girl who finds some money in her friend's backyard and they split the money and hide it from their siblings and parents. Then they spend it on crap and people think they stole the money - essentially, they did, but not this particular money - for the class trip.

It's dumb. This is the kind of plot a first grader would write. Yes, it's that bad.

just don't bother. and if you are a fan of the sweet valley twins and all, then honestly, i don't know what to say except that your taste is bad. really bad.

And to the author. Here's a word of advice for you: Predictable storylines are okay..when you know how to do them. Not like this. Please stop writing stories full of bad plot twists anyone with eyes can see from a mile away.

No one asked for a story this predictable and stupid. It's so cliched that the author's twist on buried treasure just took the life out of the novel.

I won't be giving theses books another shot.

RATING: 4 STARS
(Review Not on Blog)

I picked up one of the Sweet Valley Twins novel at the library (before my strict read in order only rule) and fell in love with the California twins and their friends and family. I had just started reading thicker chapter books, and joining the library summer reading club, I went through these books pretty quick. I was excited that I could read and really fell in love with books and reading. I believe I was about 7-9 when I read these books so it was exciting to read about 12 year old popular preteens. I could relate to both Elizabeth and Jessica, and really could not pick which twin I liked better. I would not finish this series as I would quickly move on to Sweet Valley High (Double Love). These are very tame books, and any age could read them. First crushes and bullying were the big issues that I can remember. This is very Full House (TV series) kind of books.

In this story Jessica and Ellen have found a box buried in their yard. They find it contains some $200 in cash along with letters and a photo. A young boy named Mark had also found it but the two girls split the money and leave Mark out of the loop.

What complicates matters is that the school is holding a fund-raising drive and Jessica is supposed to be selling candy bars but she doesn't. The box containing the money disappears just at the time when Jessica and Ellen have been buying some things like earrings that are expensive and a walkman. Gradually a situation arises where the other students think the girls stole the money and they shut them out. Even Elizabeth thinks Jessica might be a thief.

Complicating even more, Elizabeth is running for class treasurer against a guy that the other students make fun of. Elizabeth's friend Amy defects to help him and the chances of Elizabeth getting elected look grim.

Finally, one more complication is thrown in when the woman the box was meant for shows up. Altogether it's a good story with, as usual, a moral message in it.

Geez, Liz really doesn't have a very high opinion of Jessica. She comes very close to accusing her of shoplifting at the start of SVH, and outright accuses her of stealing the class's Disney money in this one. Nice sister, Liz.

Anyway, this one is good, because there are fun layers of rumours and coincidences and friends acting badly and the cringeworthiness that is Rockin' Peter.

If I read Buried Treasure (maybe at the age of 11) I'd love it. This book isn't just for me at this age (I'm not that old, I'm still 13). I cringed so much. I didn't like the characters, the plot and everything. It was so predictable. I love reading childrens/middle grade books but this book didn't work for me.

Ahhh, I did like this one :D I love how there are so many of this type of story too, where someone comes into secret money RIGHT at the same time as someone else has money stolen. Even Enid Blyton back in the day had a few cracks! :D
