Being a teenager is tough enough. Peer pressure, expectations, wanting to belong is just a few reasons why it just sucks. It’s even harder when you decide to ride in car with your friends, knowing that the driver was unreliable, and ends up with your friends getting killed and scarring you for life, inside and out. Jenna’s world is turned upside down when, after a car accident, leaves her face scarred. She is emotionally distraught and wants nothing more than to hide for the rest of her life. To top it all off, the drugged-up, drunk jerk that drove the car roams free with only a slap on the wrist. Jenna has a hard time with all the stares and snickers behind her back. It’s tough being different.
One day, she meets Ryan. She was walking her dog when she notices him and his boat docked up on the canal. Ryan and his mom, Karen, are travelers; not gypsies per se, but close. Though Ryan is a very much a hit with the girls, he is a sweet and, overall, a good natured person. He grew up practically taking care of his, often times, unstable mother. He, too, has his issues. Though Ryan and Jenna’s initial meetings were far from perfect, they start to develop a friendship. Its cliché, I know, but Ryan sees past her scars for the beautiful person Jenna truly is. Their relationship takes its natural course and doesn’t seem rushed what-so-ever. As they start to know each other, they find out that they can easily tell each other anything. Both Ryan and Jenna have problems and I loved how they had each other to lean on. Their relationship was so endearing, I loved every minute when they were together.
Overall, I really liked this story. There was definitely drama, but the story also had a little bit of mystery. One reason why I couldn’t give it more stars was because it took Ryan and Jenna a long time to even come to within speaking terms with one another. After they started to hang out more, it started to get more interesting. However, the biggest reason why it wasn't more stars, was the ending. No worries, it was a happy one, but it left me wanting more, a lot more. I sincerely enjoyed most of this story and to leave me with that kind of ending, was disappointing. Aside from those reasons, I really did like it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good YA story :)
