Death Note, Vol. 10: Deletion

Rate this book
With Near openly suspecting the new L of being Kira and sowing doubt in the hearts of the taskforce members, Light is once again forced to pass the Death Note on to another to take the heat off himself. But this time, Kira chooses a disciple from among his true believers. With no way to contact his successor directly, Light must rely on his faithful follower's adherence to Kira's goals. Will this newest move bring Light's ideal world closer to reality? Or will losing control of the Death Note spell Light's doom?

Tsugumi Ōba (Profile in Japanese: 大場 つぐみ), born in Tokyo, Japan, is a writer best known for the manga Death Note. His/her real identity is a closely guarded secret. As stated by the profile placed at the beginning of each Death Note manga, Ōba collects teacups and develops manga plots while holding his knees on a chair, similar to a habit of L, one of the main characters of the series.

There is speculation that Tsugumi Ōba is a pen name and that he is really Hiroshi Gamō. Pointing out that in Bakuman the main character's uncle was a one-hit wonder manga artist who worked on a gag super hero manga, very similar to Gamō and Tottemo! Luckyman in all aspects. Also that the storyboards drawn by Ōba greatly resemble Tottemo! Luckyman in style.

Mello and Matt are the highlights of this series! I need more of them... They need their own series! They are my favourite team. And I fear to say that if it came to Mello/Matt vs Kira, I would be supporting Mello and Matt!

Loved Misa in this one, she's hilarious and I loved Mello's reaction to her, so much fun.

However, I have to say that I miss the old days where Light could freely communicate with Ryuk. Now, we have Ryuk on the page but he's just there, standing and watching. The apple loving creature needs more space! And I want Mello to meet Ryuk!

And hopefully, I don't even need to mention that I don't like Near. The monkey child is rather boring and honestly, he does not seem to have any ideas of his own. L thought that something was true so Near follows it.

I really liked the new character and the character that was brought back from the past. They definitely gave the story some freshness that it needed.

Since Volume 7 or 8, my fondness for this series has started to flag, and the reasons why were particularly evident in this volume: a cast of unlikable characters, tortured storylines and lack of thought. Spoilers ahead.

Even though the characters were either ineffectual (Matsuda, Sochiro Yagami), evil (Light, L arguably, Mello) or kind of silly (Miss), you could always see where they were coming from and relate. Insights were clearly explained and understandable, motives clear. You were impressed with L'a conclusions and Lights countermeasures were logical if somewhat unrealistic (but within the realms of acceptable suspension of disbelief). You couldn't help but like Matsuda and Mogi's attempts to contribute, even though they were well out of their league. Even Mello's efforts were logical, if brutal. Unfortunately, all that has ended.

Nears conclusion that Light is Kira has yet to be even remotely logically supported by a shred of evidence. At best he proves that it *could* be the case, that it isn't impossible. This would be a fine start, except he goes on to dismantle the efforts of Light and his team to find Kira: fine if he's right, but catastrophic if he's wrong. It's impossible to respect his alleged intellect, when all he does is respout L's conclusions and evidence of doubtful veracity provided by Mello, who has a clear motive to lead Near in the wrong direction, and who should be treated as morally unacceptable as Kira himself. The attempt to go in a different direction to L is commendable, but in this case it hasn't worked out, and relies heavily on plot-forcing, rather than logical progression. The suspicion stirred up in people who should have been the last people to suspect Light was dine entirely too easily, given what we know of the characters involved, and no justification given.

All in all, it comes off as extremely forced: Tsugumi Ohba set up a fantastic story and set of characters, but now has been forcing the story to end with the "bad guy" defeated and the "good guys" victorious, regardless of whether it actually makes sense or not. A real decline of a story I deeply, deeply enjoyed.

The new character, as well as the character that was brought back from the past, were both fantastic. They really added some much-needed originality to the plot. Light is finally suspected of being Kira by someone other than Near and Mello.

As Mello and Near continue their search for Kira, the puzzle pieces are slowly coming together. The information they are able to obtain as a result of their ruses and spy methods is astounding, making it appear as if Light has no chance in this cat-and-mouse game.

By this point, the plot appears to be a little stale. But I'm confident that the final volume will compensate for it.

Actual review: 3.5

There is a certain frustration in reading a series where the same thing happens over and over with different people. The cycle gets tiring after the fourth or fifth time. I flew through this edition, unlike the previous two, but I still don't care about any of these characters like I did at the start of this series. They could live, they could die, and I see no stake in it. It doesn't help that those who are trying to catch the killer are not likeable as well.

I'm looking forward to the end.

Fan-freakin-tastic. I loveeeeee how complex everything continues to be, as new and old characters come together and the stakes are always staying incredibly high. Onward!!

TW// murder, car crash

Death Note has dragged on for far too long. It keeps running in the same circles over and over again. I’m really bored of the series, but I have only two more volumes left before I finish the series so I’m going to try to push through to the end.

Kind of entertaining. The plot didn't drag as much and there were some interesting twists and turns with Light and his ex and him manipulating his team into believing his innocence. Was disappointed with all the poor female characters, they were all idiots.

I have so many problems with this volume.

First of all, Light acted so recklessly in the first half of the volume. Near and Mello are annoying af, they’re no where near as good as L. The back and forth between L and Light was 🤌🏻, but now Light is facing two kids and their big egos.

Secondly, everyone’s zeroed on Light for being Kira and that without any solid evidence. His companions are easily swayed by both parties (that being Near and Light). It’s really irritating to see how things from the beginning of the story are getting repeated yet again.

Lastly, how misogynistic the story is. The woman representation in this manga is falsely done. Any woman that Light has encountered is either really naive and is easily charmed and manipulated by Light (they already worship him and kiss every step that he walks on🙄(I’m looking at Misa and Takanda)) or is a badass but gets killed by him in the very next second.

I would’ve loved it if L’s successor was a woman and got his revenge by making Light fall in love with her and spilling his secrets to her. He does so very easily too, so that wouldn’t have been a problem.

-hasretlendi-

Why am I even reading this??! Why?! This volume read like a filler. The plot was unravelling at a dragging pace. The new characters were utterly imbecilic and delusional for people who were deemed intelligent and sensible. There was so much of dialogue for nothing new being conveyed. Now I am only rooting for Near and Mello to put an end to this whole saga because Heaven knows this has got to stop. 😔

Mello a Matt! Luxusní dvojka a chtěla bych, aby tam byli víc... mnohem víc! Třeba úplně pořád? Nebo by mohli mít vlastní sérii? :)

A Beautiful mind game!! It gets as interesting as it ever can be!

Death Note, Volume 10 is an amazing game changer! Light trying to fight with the wits of not only super smart Near, a somewhat subdued Mello tailing Light's men but also a bigger threat in form of Japanese Task Force's Aizawa and Ide!

Just when Light was at his most dangerous game of actually getting revealed, he plays his master game of switching his subordinates & finally even contacting them!

I am loving the brain storming behind the book however, somewhere Near's ability to think is not justified and not convincing.

With two new characters in the game, it has just gotten more intense!

Can we speed forward to the part where Misa murders Kiyomi with a machete?

The cover this time was absolutely amazing. I can't stop looking at it.

However, it's just not the name now that L is gone.

Finally someone other than Near and Mello is starting to suspect Light of being Kira! I loved the plot line of some of the task force working with Near to investigate Light. Light's ego is completely out of hand now- his God-complex leaving him a little sloppy in his cover-up.

And we have a new character! That threw me off a little bit since we only have two more volumes left in the series. He's very intriguing, though, and I think will make things VERY interesting in the future!

I have to rant just for a few sentences about how poorly women are written in this novel. The only women characters who have any page time live to serve Light. Misa just sits around in lingerie all day just waiting for Light to tell her what to do. And the new female character that is introduced towards the end of this volume looks like she won't be much better. Pretty much the women are there to advance the story for the men.

Overall, I enjoyed the pacing much more in this volume. There weren't as many long Near or Light long monologues this time. And the story line is fresher. Let's see how this all starts to wrap up!

The dots are slowly being connected as Mello and Near continue their hunt for Kira. What they are able to discover thanks to their ruses and spy strategies is impressive, making it seem like Light doesn't have a chance in this cat and mouse game.

The introduction of Teru Mikami was perfect and actually gives new life to this series even if the end is near. The surprise arrival of a secondary character in the earlier volumes also added a nice twist to this volume.

This volume was quite a good one but, come to this point, it is already clear that I'm a bit tired of the series; especially given how hateful Light's character is, and how misrepresented are women as a whole.

The (re)introduction of Takada could have been quite an interesting addiction to the plot, but the way she is so easily manipulated by Light/Kira, once again, makes her pretty boring and even annoying.

Once again, glad this is almost over...

Gave a couple of month's gap between Vol 9 and Vol 10... and got heavily confused on who was who, and whats actually happening.

Re-read vol9 and then Vol 10 was a charm. [Don't ask whether now I know - who is who!]

Difficult to rate each volume individually. Overall the series is a 5 star!

Fortunately, I'm getting closer to the conclusion, ... and I already own the boxed set, ... so I probably won't abandon this, given my investment, but this volume didn't really speak to me.

Much as the run has ebbed and flowed, seizing and losing my interest, ... particularly in the last couple of volumes, I've been fascinated that the rampant misogyny has bothered me more than the (recently increasing volume of) carnage/murder/cleansing.

I know, I know, it's just manga, and I've read (and enjoyed) plenty of garbage over the years, but, ultimately, I'm guessing that if I was enjoying the books more, all of this would bother me less.

In any event, the finish line is in sight.

With only two volumes left to the series it is probable that the creators knew I would keep reading no matter how dull and drawn out the conversations had become in this series. Unless they knew I found the conversations dull. Then they were intending to bore me, but threw in Mikami to completely take me by surprise. Unless I read it on a Saturday. Then it would be obvious that the bagel I ate was far more interesting to read than a new origin story about a magical killing person. But they anticipated that I would find that plot line tedious so they tossed in some Mika scenes and the new eyecandy chic to distract me from the novelesque word balloons and chore-like storyline. The creators have out-thought me at every step of the way. Truly brilliant.
