They were the Squadron Supreme, heroes exiled from another dimension to our own--but the twisted science of the Project: PEGASUS facility cloned these defenders, infecting them with a virulent zombie strain. Now, it's up to Jill Harper's desperate special-ops team to keep the plague contained within the facility--whatever the cost. But Harper discovers that the Squadron wasn't the only unconscionable experiment being kept off the PEGASUS records, and her shocking find may be the key to saving the human race. Join Frank Marraffino (Haunted Tank) and Fernando Blanco (MARVEL ZOMBIES 5, THUNDERBOLTS) as the bodies and unpredictable resurrections climax in the most gore-soaked chapter of the Marvel Zombies saga yet!

3.5 stars would probably be closer to the mark, as this is better than the other books in the series I gave 3 stars to, but I couldn’t quite bring myself to give it a 4. I’d be so much happier if Goodreads would let me mark books out of ten or, even better, let me give them a percentage! :-)

This started out as yet another in the increasingly long line of Marvel’s zombie books, albeit almost entirely unconnected to any of their other zombie books, plot-wise. It then veered into a Superman parody for an issue, which was OK if you like such things; I feel it’s been done-to-death by this point, personally. Then they finally grabbed my interest by introducing (resurrecting, I suppose, but not as a zombie) Jack of Hearts as one of the protagonists in issue 3, a character I’ve always liked, mainly because of his cool visual.

Along with Jackie boy came a metaphorical dump truck, which backed up and deposited about a thousand tons of puns on our heads. I love a good pun, but these were a bit much after a while, even for me. Also, why they felt the need to call Jack’s new love interest ‘Jill’ is beyond me. Just TOO cheesy, guys. >eye roll<

Overall, this was quite entertaining and did make me chuckle a couple of times, and it was nice to see Jack of Hearts back among the living, but did it really warrant yet another zombie-based mini-series, Marvel? I get it; The Walking Dead is REALLY popular, but you have plenty of your own fan-favourite properties without having to muscle into Robert Kirkman’s market share, mmmKay?

"Marvel Zombies: Supreme", the sixth collected edition in this series, will be a treat for the die-hard fan of old-school Marvel Comics and fans that are knowledgeable of Marvel history. I am neither, but I still enjoyed this nasty little blood-fest.

Squadron Supreme was a short-lived series from the 1980s that has garnered a bit of a cult following. They have popped up in several "reboots" and guest-starred in other series throughout the years. The superhero team is essentially a parody/homage to DC's Justice League, with heroes very obviously based on the DC pantheon. Hyperion (Superman) is the leader, followed by Nighthawk (Batman) and Power Princess (Wonder Woman). There is even a Flash rip-off who runs super-fast called the Whizzer, which sounds more like a superhero with a urinary problem.

Anyway, in this edition, the Squadron Supreme have arrived in one of the many alternate Earths in the Multiverse, and they somehow become infected with the zombie virus. A military platoon (clearly modeled after G.I. Joe), led by this Earth's version of Captain America and the villain known as Jack of Hearts are the only forces stopping the Squadron from spreading the virus to the rest of the world.

This is another fun, and gory, entry in a series that just won't die...

I didn't care for this one as much as the others in this series. I think the fact that most of the super heroes in this were "C" level at best had a lot to do with it. Then again the human zombies were pretty lame as well

Not bad. Actually better than some of the previous entries in the Marvel Zombies series. Got to have fun with the Squadron Supreme, Battlestar, Jack of Hearts and the superhero team representing Kansas in the Fifty State Initiative.

This was a pretty standard underground base with zombies in it story. Some of the zombies happened to have super-powers and showed a much higher level of cognition that your average lamebrain. This didn't shy from being visceral but was also not over-the-top gore for the sake of it. I didn't know any of the heroes in this, but enjoyed it at a purely superficial level. The artwork was clean and clear, though having the main human characters all wearing helmets did make it harder to know or care which one was which.

The Marvel Zombie books are always hit or miss, with more misses in my direction. I'm still always curious to check them out despite lower expectations. Supreme was so-so for me. The biggest plus was opening my eyes to Squadron Supreme which is a total blindspot and has piqued my interest to seek out more of their books.

It is kind of cool to see Marvel's version of the Justice League becoming zombies and I did laugh when they had Hyperion kind of reenact Superman's origin story with the landing in Kansas and being spotted by a Ma and Pa Kent stand ins. But it did feel it did drag a bit but still kind of cool.

How low did this series get before it got the axe? Is the very rocky bottom or will the next one be even lower?

Another one that's not really connected to the original Marvel Zombies story but still decent.

Pretty decent zombie story [not the original Marvel zombies] with great vibes similar to the original Resident Evil movie [underground lab, etc.]. Actually "scary and suspenseful" with some real surprises.

Well, A for effort on this, the final Marvel Zombies book (that I will be reading). I don't envy Maraffino's task of finding something new to do with a series that had burned itself out long ago, and the fact that he managed to put together a story that at least has moments of originality and humor is pretty impressive. That said, it still feels like a "Why this? Why now?" kind of book that just hoped to squeeze every last dime out of this franchise before killing it (and then waiting a few years and releasing Marvel Zombies Destroy!, which, come on).

Anyway, the story. This one doesn't connect to the Marvel Zombies universe of the previous 6 entries, but instead finds zombie versions of Squadron Supreme being created completely separately via "mad science." I'd say this cheapens it, forcing it to exist on its own and disregard previous continuity, but who really gives a shit. It's a story about a knock-off, parodical version of the Justice League eating everyone. There are so many balls being juggled already, I forgive the lack of continuity (plus the continuity kind of sucks anyway).

Now, I have never read Squadron Supreme, and I have no idea who Jack of Hearts is (or if he's really even a Marvel superhero or just someone Marraffino made up), so I was at a bit of a loss going into this. I think this was written with a lot of references pre-loaded, and as such I didn't understand them or appreciate any of the character decisions. This definitely could've been handled with a little more finesse, so that the reader doesn't have to constantly feel like he's not getting some inside joke. Additionally, the human soldiers Marraffino created to be the central protagonists of this series all look and act alike, with very little to distinguish, and that kind of lost me. I also didn't care an ounce if any of them lived or died.

That said, there are some fun moments here, mostly drawn from direct homages to Justice League characters. For instance, Hyperion (Superman) has a pretty decent issue devoted to him going around and eating people that are direct references to Clark Kent and his upbringing, and made for some decently funny visuals. Also Shape (Plastic Man) has a pretty dumb scene where he keeps eating people but his plastic powers just make him get fatter and fatter instead of digesting them, which made me laugh.

But, in general, I don't think Marraffino is much of a comedy writer. He's clearly TRYING to be funny, with lots of homages to zombie movies and really forced dialogue that seems like it was meant to be a parody of comic book dialogue, rather than an actual attempt at it. However, there's just something missing with the delivery and style that makes it seem like someone telling you a joke they heard a comedian tell, rather than the comedian telling the joke himself.

So, definitely skip this unless you're a Marvel Zombies completist. And if you're a Marvel Zombies completist, congratulations on being the only one of something!

This was my first time reading any kind of Marvel Zombies comic. I'm aware that it generally takes place in an alternate universe where heroes have been turned into zombies, but not much beyond that. I really wasn't that interested, since I don't have a great love of zombies. That said, comixology had a sale around Halloween, and in an effort to be festive, I thought I would check it out. I don't know a lot about the Squadron Supreme, though they seem to be pretty much the Justice League (and I have since seen Hyperion in some Avengers comics and Jack of Hearts in Secret Avengers, I think). This was fast-paced, and had some amusing one-liners and homages to Justice League characters, and the art was rather well done, but it just didn't really do it for me all that much.

While this spin off limited run wasn’t the worst of the Marvel Zombies stories, it felt far more unnecessary than anything else.

For better or worse, VanLente pretty much sealed the story in the previous iteration so to revisit the idea just feels more like a cash grab or preying on nostalgia.

It also contains mostly B and C grade versions of zombie superheroes (which aren’t even the real versions of the superheroes anyways).

Again, not really all that necessary in the grand scheme of marvel. I will say the story is pretty dark, the story is self contained, and the art work is decent.

This is the first Marvel Zombies book I've read that I will not be keeping on my shelf. It's also the first I've read that doesn't tie in with any of the other stories in any way. I thought maybe it would retcon how Hyperion got the zombie plague, but it's a self contained story.

I really wouldn't suggest this for much of anyone, unless you happen to REALLY like any of the characters in here (Squadron Supreme, Jack-of-hearts).

fun read. Dialogue was bad, and taking hyperion down with mad cow disease was a bit anticlimactic, but nice popcorn book.

A very shallow story. The Hyperion issue (#2) actually has some nice homages to Superman, but that’s the only particularly notable element in the whole series.
