A Knight's Vengeance

Rate this book
Geoffrey de Lanceau is a knight, the son of the man who once ruled Wode. His noble sire died, however, branded as a traitor. But never will Geoffrey believe his father betrayed their king, and swears vengeance against the man who brought his sire down in a siege to take over Wode.

Lady Elizabeth Brackendale dreamed of marrying for love, but is promised by her father to a lecherous old baron. Then she is abducted and held for ransom by a scarred, tormented rogue who turns out to be the very knight who has sworn vengeance against her father.

The threads of deception sewn eighteen years ago bind the past and present. Only by Geoffrey and Elizabeth championing their forbidden love can the truth - and the lies — be revealed about a knight's vengeance.

A Knight’s Vengeance by Catherine Kean
Historical romance. Knights #1.
Geoffrey de Lanceau wants revenge. He kidnaps Lady Elizabeth Brackendale in pursuit of that revenge.
They say every story has more than one truth. While Geoffrey knows his father died in battle, there is more to the story. And having his revenge is wearing against his conscience.

Elizabeth is amusing in her expectations of being treated like a lady. And while it may be historically accurate, I didn’t care for Veronique having the run of the castle as well as Geoffrey in her bed, nor did I care for his treatment of Elizabeth. He was just being vindictive and it wasn’t necessary.
It does have a happy ending.

A handsome tormented rogue set on vengeance. A feisty spirited beauty abducted by said rogue as part of his revenge against her father. Both agonizing and melting over the burning desire that is growing between them... Now, where have I read that before?
A Knight's Vengeance is a textbook cliche of a medieval historical romance and/or bodice ripper. There were some inconsistencies and bits that didn't make much sense and a lot of it was fairly predictable (thought there were a few twists I didn't expect -I said a few, mind!), BUT it did manage to keep me engaged and turning the pages, something most fail to do.
I won't go as far as to say this was a great read or that I'd label it as a favourite, and I certainly don't think It'll go down in history as one of the classics, but it sure was nicely written and very entertaining to read.
As a side note, it took me a day and a half to finish this book. It's been a long time since a book made me want to keep reading for that long. I'd definitely give Catherine Kean a second go.

This is a stupid book. I mean I try not to call books stupid but wtf?! The premises had promise but then miss Kean decided to shit all over the whole book with a stupid rapey, agnsty hero who sucked!!! How does he suck you might ask? How? Well He kidnaps Elizabeth in her sleeping gown..in the cold, he allows his mercenaries to hurt her and then blames her for it, he gives her shitty food just cuz, and and he takes away her brooch which was given to her by her DEAD MOTHER! And then, then he gets pissed that after traveling for a full day and getting cut up and stripped by strangers and rolled in mud and all this other shit, he gets mad that she WANTS a BATH!!!! Tha FUCk?!!? Yeah it was a DNF I have better things to do than waste my time on a poorly written revenge novel thing.....

4**** Very good historical romance. Geoffrey our hero kidnaps Elizabeth to force her father to give up The estate his father once held. He is determined to prove his father was not a traitor. There is someone around who can't let that happen. Elizabeth is the innocent caught in the middle trying to do the right thing for everyone. An enjoyable love story with plenty of twists and turns to keep the pages turning. I look forward to reading the next one in the series.

I really went back and forth on my opinions on this one--the beginning is pretty uninteresting, but it got better as I got to see more of the characters. I never really warmed to Geoffrey, though, and while I did wind up liking Elizabeth it took me awhile.

I thought this book was so full of passion and romance. I loved her hero so much and it was all just sweet. Kean did a great job building the medieval period, mentioning just the right details to really bring you into the world she was building. I love this author.

Cheesy, and predictable...I needed something light and romancey after reading a spooky ghost story. I did enjoy it, though. Might even read the next one, as I did warm to the characters.

Kidnapper to lover romance

Kidnapping does not fall into my list of favorite story foundations although I understand that kidnap for random was not uncommon in medieval times. The pace of this story dragged for me in some spots. In all honesty, I did not grow very fond of either main character, but I very much liked Dominic, a secondary character that that will probably get his own story at some point in this series. The sensuality done well without becoming disgustingly graphic sex. I would definitely recommend this book to medieval romance enthusiasts.

I purchased this book because of the amazing reviews on Amazon and oh boy, they were all right. Such a good book with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. I love Historical romances and this one is so well writen and the way the author describes it all made me feel like I was on the story! I felt like I was on a roaller coaster of emotions! I couldn't put this down until I ended. Can't wait for book two!

Actually, I chose this because it's an interesting, romantic story in Medieval England, same time like Robin Hood. I think the story of a knight and his captured maiden is told in a sweet, cheesy way. The writing is easy and fluent, full of comparisons, but I think it's a bit too modern (like the father is proud that his daughter is intelligent -people would think different in this time period). Nevertheless, it's of course, not a clean romance - especially one particular scene was too...descriptive and unrealistic. I skipped it. The sparks between Geoffrey and Elizabeth are enjoyable and it would make a cute swashbuckler movie, for sure. I read it in the German edition, which has even the better cover in my opinion. I fell in love with this book, years ago, when I was too young, but rereading it after my skimming and waiting, lead to surprises as well to disappointments. There are classic tropes, like the hero's faithful buddy, the murderous Lady de Winter-rival, the plotting villain, the old healer and a shy servant. Language isn't as bad and violence appropriate for historical fiction (just one baddie to mourn).
Summing up, a romantic fairy tale for experienced readers (I still think apart from one peculiar scene it would be a perfect, old-fashioned historical movie).
The German translation is old-fashioned- I don't know if it's in English, too.
Drat, I' ll always keep swooning for Geoffrey and Elizabeth!!

With the review ratings being all over the board, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but I actually enjoyed it! Yes, the hero does seem to be cruel and mean and the heroine doesn't seem very strong but the storyline explains why they are the way they are!! Lots of twists and turns in the story and it kept my interest from start to finish.

A Knight’s Vengenace AUDIO by Catherine Kean was an exciting listen. Geoffrey De Lanceau had watched his father be killed when he was only ten years old. They said he was a traitor but Geoffrey knew better. He was grown now and had spent years in the East fighting for his king. He had returned to kill the man and recover the castle and lands that had been his father’s and now should be his. Lady Elizabeth Brackendale was the daughter of the man who had filled Geoffrey’s father. Foremost amongst her problems right now was how she would escape the betrothal that would end in marriage just one week in the future. He was a repulsive old man and she wanted none of it. Geoffrey met her in the village although neither of them knew who the other was. Any romance reader can see where this is going. The problem, though, was the betrothal and the fact Geoffrey hated her father.

What a good listen. Of course, she got kidnapped and they fell in love. That is hardly a spoiler. Their romance was an entertaining one and had plenty of twists and turns along the way. Elizabeth was stubborn and determined to prove her father’s innocence and escape from Geoffrey. She tried several times. She was not treated as a prisoner, but as a guest. That proved to be her downfall: his kindness. It was a good plot. It moved along but skipped nothing. The characters were plentiful and well-rounded. The story was an old trope: enemies to lovers, but somehow Kean put a new spin on it. It was relatively accurate to the time period. I enjoyed listening to it.

I did not enjoy the narrator, James Gillies. In the opening scene, where Geoffrey’s father gets killed, he was dreadful, but as the story wore on I adjusted to him although there are many other who could do a better job. His accent and his voice were both too much.

I was invited to listen to A Knight’s Vengeance AUDIO by the author. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #CatherineKean #JamesGillies #AKnightsVengeance

When it comes to historical romance, the devil's in the details: a story can be completely ruined for me if the author did not do his/her research. This author most certainly did.

The hero is a "rogue" hell-bent on avenging his father's death, a man who was accused to be a traitor to the king. The heroine is a spoiled, arrogant, only daughter whose father is the target of the hero's revenge. Geoffrey kidnaps Elizabeth and her handmaid--the perfect pawns to lure her father into a melee.

The plot is fast paced, the characters well-developed, and the conflict constant. I would like to have seen a more realistic development of the love story: what starts out as hatred, then lust between the H/h too quickly transforms to true love. All in all, the story is an intriguing rollercoaster ride, and I do believe I will be reading on in the series.

This reads very much like an old school bodice ripper (which I was a fan of) but if you're not into that sort of thing, you'll want to pass on this. Also, when reading a book set in MEDIEVAL times, it's best not to do so with a 21st century mindset. Yes the hero does things which are not PC, but it's the freaking 1100's for god's sake. It's amazing he didn't do much, much worse than what some readers are whining about.

I did enjoy parts of the book, but for the most part there isn't anything original or memorable about it. It does fit the bill if you're in the mood for a classic feeling medieval story without too much depth. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

This is the first book by Catherine Kean, in A series, it's set in England in the year 1192, Geoffrey de Lanceau is a boy and watching his father bleed to death,he was murdered. Later years he rescued Lady Elizabeth Brackendale and finds out who her father is, so he keeps her for revenge against her father because they are sworn enemies! There was times Geoffrey wasn't very nice to Lady Elizabeth, but after a short time they fall in love with each other, Geoffrey won't give Elizabeth back to her father, he wants his land returned to him! I found this book very interesting and enjoyable, story had drama in it ,love story with historical. I think you will enjoy this book as much as I did!

Enthralling

The only reason I gave this 4 stars was because it was a little over long. Also as the first book in the series where would I go from here? The tale itself was very interesting. The depiction of medieval life was romanticized. But I suppose a true depicting of the squalor and primitiveness would be off putting. All in all I truly enjoyed this story and I am looking forward to the next book.

The enemies to lovers trope in this book is great! You can tell how much she hated De Lanceau. But the passion and hate together was 🔥 I wish someone would throw me up against the wall, hold me by the chin, and kiss me too! I’ve never been so jealous of a character. 😂 He was trying to get revenge for his father and hold her for ransom. What he got was love instead and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I will definitely read the rest of the series!
