When an alien invasion threatens everyone she loves, cybernetic samurai Cat LeBlanc must upgrade her warrior skills, in this thrilling cyberpunk tale.
The megacity of New Montreal has become ground zero for the Antithesis. Having burrowed deep beneath every continent on Earth, the aliens have emerged in massive waves, destroying all sentient creatures in their path. All that’s standing in their way is the elite vanguard of cyber-samurai determined to stop humanity’s extinction at all costs.
Catherine “Cat” LeBlanc has only been a samurai for a week, tackling trials by fire as they erupt with guts, grit, and a lot of explosives. As a warrior-still-in-training, her unorthodox and spontaneous fighting style has saved many lives. Now, with New Montreal recruiting soldiers for war, Cat will be on the frontlines with fellow samurai like pyrotechnic nun Gomorrah; buggy, trigger-happy Grasshopper; and goth public relations specialist Emoscythe Mordeath Noir.
Despite her prowess in battle, Cat requires stronger armor and more powerful weapons to defeat the Antithesis’s endless hordes. She also needs to ensure her girlfriend, Lucy, and their “kittens”—the brood of orphans they’ve adopted—are safe. But protecting New Montreal and its citizens requires methods of warfare designed to quickly wipe out as many Antithesis as possible. Is the price of victory worth the potential mass destruction it will leave in its wake?
The fourth volume of the hit LitRPG sci-fi series—with more than seven million views on Royal Road—now available on Audible and wherever ebooks are sold!
A bird that likes comfy and happy things, and also knives. Once ate a god’s eye and awakened the ability to see all that is good in the world. Known to steal shiny ideas and baubles. Currently forbidden from writing his own bios.
This is fourth in a LitRPG series that builds over time. Read in order.
We're back to fighting aliens! The action is great. We get some interesting new samurai for Cat to bounce off of. And I was completely engaged throughout.
I don't have a ton more to say about this. I will note that the blurb is a bit overwritten. Cat's found family are never in any danger. The protective forces for her home city are competent and have things in hand enough that Cat can spend some time going proactively destructive. And I like that way better than the desperation tone the blurb implies.
Plus, Grasshopper is low-key awesome. I squeed more than a little when she showed up after the action in
Anyway, this is back to the full five stars and is what I'm in this story for.
A note about Steamy: There's some intermittent steam with Cat and Lucy, but there's an actual "Interlewd" with Delilah and Franny putting this on the low end of my steam tolerance. The scene itself was on the tame side and had some oddly distancing emotional byplay. It's entirely skippable, frankly.
Poor Catherine “Cat” Leblanc is now headfirst into a war against the antithesis. This loses a lot of its cyberpunk qualities and slice of life to focus instead on the front lines of a massive war. While I prefer the cyberpunk stuff, I still had a lot of fun reading this stuff. Catherine having to try to deal with the locals and their attitude is also fascinating.
Sadly, RavensDagger’s better story devolves into disgusting smut at the end of the book. It’s like the pervert just couldn’t hold back imagining two girls having sex and wrote it out without any idea of real intimacy. You get a feeling he was truly the one pleasuring himself while imagining a few teen girls getting it on. It’s gross and creepy and I really don’t know if I want to read any more of his stuff. It just goes on for so long. Dozens of pages. Nasty smut.
I really enjoyed this book, like the ones before it in the series. It was great to get back to the alien killing that started the entire series and that Cat is actually designed to deal with. At the same time, the ante was really upped for this book. The stakes will have to be lowered for future books I imagine. It's hard to top planet-wide alien incursion. It's also really hard to maintain the same level of ramped up urgency long term.
It was nice to see new Samurai this time around. Even literally brand new ones. Working with Gomorrah is fine and all, but it was really fun to see Cat working with new people as well. Didn't get as much time with Lucy or the kittens. At this point the kittens are just random flat characters that I barely recall anything about. Hoping that might change a little eventually, it would deepen the writing to add more depth to all the side characters.
There was a spicy scene in this book. It wasn't nearly as awkward as the previous ones. I do want to point out that masturbation in front of a partner (or potential partner) is much more intimate than a kiss. Where the author came up with the idea that shy little Delilah would be more amenable to that than a kiss boggles the mind. On that note, it was also great to see Delilah (Gomorrah) and Franny admit to feelings and begin something.
It’s been four books and I have liked all of them, the stories and characters are great, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some minor problems. I have got used to the introduction at the start of each chapter, but I still find this just interrupts the flow of the book for no real reason. The books are a mixture of SciFi and Fantasy, but there are times when the Science part really doesn’t bear close examination, even for Science Fiction.
Cat gets to meet several other Vanguard during a worldwide incursion. Loved Grasshopper! The action was great, as usual. Interesting new developments. Gomorrah and her friend have a sex scene that's entirely skippable.
I've been reading so much fantasy and horror lately that science fiction is refreshing.
Cat and Gomorrah continue their growth from new Samurai as a global invasion is happening. Making a home for Lucy and the kittens is the best part of being the defender of her city and the area around it.
I mean, how can you not like a book that has a character with that name!? Funny as always, back to alien destruction. Loved getting to know the other Samurai as well. This is definitely one of my favorite series.
Glad this one was all about fighting aliens again, especially since book 2 and book 3 didn’t have as much action. It’s not as good as book 1 but still great, just a bit short.
Being warned about the global attack, it quickly becomes clear people will have very little time to prepare. Stray Cat and Gomorrah are of course in the thick of it, or at least the thick of it around Montreal. What follows is a book filled with wise cracking, fighting against aliens and on occasion buying new things. Of course, the whole idea of samurai and the ease with which new technology is created does ask a bit of the reader's suspension of disbelief, but I have no problems with it. The smut at the end should not come as a surprise. It isn't the first time in the series and if it is not your cup of tea a title like "Interlewd" should give a clue on what is about to happen. Anyway, it was an entertaining fun read, nothing deep, just wisecracking action and that is what I was expecting.
