Timeless are the tales of the Brothers Grimm who, in an effort to preserve native folklore, unwittingly crafted a cornerstone of Western literature.

German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

A catching flies moment

Sometimes, when you read a review you have to wonder if the person isn't having you on. Having a joke on you? I mean they can't be that willfully ignorant, can they? I've just read a review of this marvellous book with the pre-Disneyfied endings and came across a 1-star review that had this to say,

"I am in love with the Once Upon a Time TV show, we both are, but this book is nothing but a collection of fairy tales that they used to base the show off of. This book is not about the tv show at all which is what I was expecting."

The mind boggles...

And another, Grimm's Fairy Tales illustrated by Arthur Rackham (I've just bought this for the shop),

"Fascinating and horrifying! NOT for young children!"

Some people have been watching too much Disney. At some point they'll get round to making an omnibus film series of the Old Testament but with happy endings. It'll get the Bible banned! Lord knows (intended) how they could Disney-fy the Crucifixion though.

I was surprised at just how different some of these stories are! Some I didn't even know! I thought I knew all the fairy tales. Most shocking to me was how different Sleeping Beauty (my favorite fairy tale, ever) and Little Red Cap were nothing like I expected them to be. You'll be in for a shock reading this, but you'll enjoy it! I highly recommend you read it!

This book is a collection of classic fairy tales that all tie into the TV show called Once Upon A Time. The people that live in the town are storybook characters. The show gives it an interesting spin on these classic stories. For example, Snow White is a thief and she steals from Prince Charming and that is how they fall in love. These stories are crafted to take its readers to a different land that has readers sitting on the edge of their chairs. I really think that this book is something that everyone needs to get.

The novel was surprisingly very good. Even though it consisted of stories that had been told time and time again, it was written so well. I recommend this excellent book to people of all ages. If it had one more chapter, it might contain a story about The Princess and the Frog or about Pocahontas. These are two well-known stories that weren't in the novel.

I truly enjoyed these stories. A quick read & if you're in a hurry, you can read just one or two at a time. I loved reading the script from the pilot of Once Upon a Time, the TV show, very interesting! :)

Not ashamed to admit that I typically prefer the Disney-fied versions of fairy tales. But I'm glad to have read the originals.

Even if you've read other Grimm fairy tale books, you will still appreciate the stories within.

This was actually a real fun read! The original fairy tales are a lot more gruesome but I still liked it very much.

This collection has some familiar and unfamiliar fairy tales. I don't think there is anything special about this collection over others.

I knew the Grimm tales were grim...but never realized how terrible and filled with death and murder they really are! Nice curated selection in this compilation, which reflects many of the storylines and characters in the “Once” tv series.

I am not exactly sure if this was the version I read. I did the audiobook on Libby. It was about this long. It was cute and sweet stories. It made me think of my childhood. I used to have a book of these fairytales

Although it was interesting to read these fairly tales in their “original” form, for the most part I did not enjoy this book. The stories are weird and gruesome. It was not my cup of tea at all. EBN24 Category: The original source material for the retelling (A retelling was another category)

I finished it, but I don’t remember very many of the stories. All I really remember is that I was kind of bored and just wanted to hurry through it so I could finish it.

For the first book I read in my life, as an 11 year old, it's a very nice book that kept me engaged and it's very short finished it in a day.

Os contos de fada originais não são nada como os imaginamos ou como mostram os desenhos animados modernos. E certamente não são adequados para as crianças de hoje.

I have always wanted to read the fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers and this book was great. I love the TV show Once Upon a Time and this book was foreword from the creators of the TV Once Upon a Time. I have two more versions of the Grimm Brothers classic fairy tales. Both versions from Barnes and Nobles; I’m hoping to start reading one of the books and read more of the other fairies that weren't in this book.

The collected stories are the exact same stories from other books by the Brothers Grimm. This book is no good for those who already have a Grimm's Fairy Tales Book. I never read the whole book, just the first few stories before I realized, HEY! I just read that in my other book.

I give it 1 star because it was not what I was expecting at all.

I am in love with the Once Upon a Time TV show, we both are, but this book is nothing but a collection of fairy tales that they used to base the show off of. This book is not about the tv show at all which is what I was expecting.

I already recently have read a good part of Grimm's Fairy Tales (see my list) and when I started to read this Once Upon a Time book, I was just re-reading what I just read but in a different book.

It's too bad but I was really hoping this was going to be different from what it really is.

Returning the book.

hmf... I never knew that Sleeping Beauty's mother was in the bath tub when a frog jumped out from between her legs to tell her to expect a child soon..... thats a little weird...

Yet, these stories are oldies but goodies.. they still, after all these years, have the ability to make me hope, and fret, and even though I know the ending, I still have a tendency to sit on the edge of my seat hoping against all hope it will all work out in the end... then again, I am a lady who loves a happily ever after...

I really liked being able to read these original fairytales and to see how the original stories were told. Some of them I had heard before, but many of them I had not. It is amazing how much influence these old fairytales have had on our modern entertainment and will probably continue to for many more years. My favorite fairytales from this collection were: King Thrushbeard, The Goose Girl, Rapunzel, and The Fisherman and His Wife. Definitely a set of timeless tales!

This was a nice collection of traditional Grimm fairy tales. Though the book appears small, it backs in more stories than I was expecting. I'm happy to see the creators of the show encouraging viewers to delve into the original texts while experiencing their retellings.
