Victoria Laurie is the New York Times bestselling author of 32 books and counting. Over the past 16 years Victoria has created several series and a few stand-alone novels. Her mystery series include: The Psychic Eye Mysteries, The Life Coach Mysteries, and The Ghost Hunter Mysteries. She's also the author of two YA books, When and Forever Again, as well as a middle-grade series called The Oracles of Delphi Keep.
Currently, Victoria is working on the 17th book in both the Psychic Eye Mysteries and the 3rd book in the Life Coach Mysteries, along with also working to produce a brand NEW series called Spellbound set for release winter/spring 2020.
My 3rd time reading this book and still love it. I'm glad Abby let herself see what could happen with Duffy. After the way Dutch had treated her, she had every right to do that. I did think it was a convenient ending. I didn't buy that Dutch would be so forgiving. It made me wonder what he'd been up to while they were apart and since we only get Abby's POV, we just don't know.
One thing that bothered me this time around was the constant warning to the reader that something was going to happen. At the end of half the chapters is was something like, "Little did I know that...." Something bad was going to happen. It got old and took me out of the experience. Basically, it reminded me I was reading a story instead of experiencing. I don't think I was bothered by it the first time around because I didn't know what was going to happen and now that I did, I was more critical. I'm nit picking. Love the series and I love Abby.
At this point I wasn't sure Abby should be with Dutch, but I know I grow to think differently.
How Abby gets herself into these situations, I will never know.
Victoria Laurie delivers yet another charming edition to her psychic eye series. In Killer Insight, Abby Cooper, professional psychic, finds herself flying to a friends wedding to fill in for a newly missing bridesmaid after breaking up with her boyfriend, FBI agent Dutch Rivers. It doesn't take long for Abby's crew to start singing, and Abby soon realizes that the bridesmaid she's filling in for isn't missing, she's dead. She pairs up with the bride-to-be's older brother (who she may or may not have a one night stand with...I'm not telling!) to solve the murders. In the process she paints a very large bulls-eye on her back.
For any of you who have read some of my earlier reviews on previous books in this series, you'll be aware of the fact that I'm not exactly in love with Dutch. In fact, he's not my cup of tea at all. Most of the time I'm urging Abby to break up with him in my head. So, it surprised me when I almost cried when they broke up at the beginning of the book. (I say almost as I was on the bus and put the book away quickly before I embarrassed myself). This goes to prove just how good of a write Laurie is.
She made that scene so realistic for me. Nothing in it seemed outlandish, or even made me roll my eyes. It was perfectly written. Good enough to get someone who didn't even think the two of them belonged together to shed a tear over the thought of them losing each other.
That was just one of the examples of her great writing skills that were in this book. I believe it to be one of the better in the series thus far (and I'm looking forward to reading more!)
My recommendations: If you haven't read any of the Abby Cooper books, start with the first one and don't stop! If you have read all of them up until now, and wondering if you should continue...what are you thinking? Pick up the next one and get reading!!
Should you read this book? Answer: Have you been reading the series? If Yes, then you probably should to keep up with the story-line. If No, then I would pass.
Here's why:
This novel is not Victoria Laurie's best. While the book ends with a bang, it takes forever to get there. The last 50 pages are the best of the whole book, by far. The beginning of the book drags as Abby deals with personal issues about her relationship with Dutch and her burgeoning relationship with Duffy. The conflict between Dutch feels contrived and Abby's flight from Michigan (while remaining true to character) seem like an easy way to deal with the interpersonal relationship between Dutch and Abby which wraps up in a nice package at the end of the book.Victoria Laurie never really deals with what went on between her Abby and Dutch. For a book series that seems so extraordinary, Victoria Laurie always, previously, had her characters seem so real, the way she dealt with them in this book seems to take after a romantic comedy.
The over-arching mystery in this novel takes a back-seat to the aforementioned romance triangle. This is sad, as the mystery could have been taken a lot further than it was. It wasn't gripping as the previous books in the series were. This book was much easier to put down than Victoria Laurie's previous books. The twist does redeem this book, that is if you can get through the beginning.
Don't feel disheartened by this novel in the Psychic Eye series, overall it is a brilliantly written series that balances both wit and intriguing mysteries.
Ehhhh, mixed feelings! I'm reading these books for some light fun. That being the case, I try very hard to ignore inconsistencies and things that make me go "what the hell?". Still, a few things... Abby is supposedly close friends with the bride, but (ignoring the fact that we never heard about the girl in the previous books [which is fine to me, I suppose the author can't plan out everything]) it feels like they're great childhood friends. It doesn't seem as if Abby knows much about her friends current life, which causes a bit of a disconnect.
The way she broke up with Dutch was seriously lame, and this was the part of the book I winced over every time I read it. I'm not thrilled with their relationship, but breaking up with him so quickly and easily... On one hand I think Abby relies too much on her psychic powers, but I usually think she doesn't rely on them enough (or doesn't listen to them enough).
I also dislike the way the author constructs the book, so that there's a shot of the present, and then the book rewinds and Abby tells the story up to then. I hated the way the author sometimes interjects Abby going "If I knew I would regret this..." so on and so forth in her previous books, but in this one, it was even worse.
The end was... meh. I actually liked the plot of the book until the end. The way Abby resolves her relationship with Duffy is really convenient. As is the way she resolves her relationship with Dutch. Argh. 2-3 stars, putting 3 down because I did like it better than the last book and I had enjoyed it for the most part.
She definitely leads an interesting life. Heartbreak, weddings, dead bridesmaids, mystery, traveling, truly horrible parents....all through a psychic bend.
Overall I liked this book. In this one Abby and Dutch break up. She ends up a bridesmaid in her friends wedding. While here people begin disappearing. Now she tries to figure out who is behind it all.
Sometimes, I enjoy reading mindless fluff. And that’s exactly what the Abby Cooper: Psychic Eye mystery series is. Never deep, complicated, or overwhelmingly reeling, I found the first three books in the series to be fun and easy. I took them at face value and didn’t judge harshly. After all, they entertained me.
I ignored Abby’s annoying behavior (e.g. a woman never tells a man that she sat by the phone all week waiting for him to call – unless she’s a Victoria Laurie heroine named Abby Cooper). A woman also never makes a scene in public over tedious mishaps on her boyfriend’s part – another one of Abby’s favorite pastimes.
Nevertheless, I got over it, also ignoring the unrealistic characters, such as Abby’s richer-than-Bill-Gates sister, Cat, who always seems to show up for… absolutely no reason at all. I’ve seen Abby’s sister described as “a beloved character” on other reader reviews. Personally, I sigh in exasperation any time she she’s even mentioned, and pray to the heavens that Laurie doesn’t find some humdrum reason for Cat to make an appearance. Which happens in every single book. Even though she lives a plane ride away.
Then there’s Abby’s boyfriend, Dutch, an FBI agent whose personality changes from book to book. He’s either depicted as the perfect boyfriend, and also the most easygoing boyfriend to put up with Abby’s erratic behavior, or, come the next book in the series, the most thoughtless ass Laurie could dream up.
Mostly, however, I’ve always ignored (which is VERY hard for me to do) the run-on sentences, comma splices, occasional missing period, and other numerous grammatical errors.
Then comes Killer Insight, the fourth book in the series. Like I said, I take these books for the mindless fluff that I figure they’re supposed to be and focus on the fact that they entertain me. Killer Insight, however, is slow, boring, predictable, and, quite frankly, almost painful. Without entertainment, the annoying characters, weak writing, and lack of depth make each page excruciatingly agonizing to get through. Even making it from one sentence to the next seems like a hardship that no reader should have to bear.
The plot: After a fight with Dutch (he's inconsiderate and completely oblivious to it this time around), Abby finds herself bolting to Colorado to be a bridesmaid in an old friend's wedding. But things take a nasty turn when the other bridesmaids start disappearing and all evidence turns to the groom. Seems like a good enough premise for some light chick lit, right? Well, it's a shame what could have been.
The first three books are exciting, fast-paced thrillers, all worth reading if you enjoy a guilty pleasure now and then. But Killer Insight falls flat. If you’re a fan of the series, read the fourth installment at your own risk. But don’t feel bad if you have to put the book aside and skip on to the next. You won’t miss a thing. Promise.
Parts of this book I liked, the other parts were just meh....
Abby finds herself running away from a relationship (meh #1) to be a bridesmaid in her best friend's wedding. Her heart really isn't to it, but she goes because they are very close....yet she knows none of the other bridesmaids (meh #2), Her pyschic intuition is off and she's not quite to her intuitive self (meh #3) and finds herself in a heap load of dead bridesmaids.
Like I said, I did enjoy certain parts. I understand that these books are very light reading and I do/have looked over certain things. But the mehs just keep bugging me.
Meh #1 - As much a I like Dutch, I don't like how he doesn't embrace Abby's gift of sight as openly as she would like, but I think her blaming their "break up" on him was a no no. It was most def Abby that did all the breaking as Dutch just wanted some breathing room to focus on his new job with the FBI. He adores her and she didn't give the caveman his chance to try to take his foot out of his mouth.
Meh #2- Abby had never even heard of any of these women. I just have a hard time with that. If you're besties with someone, you must have some inclination of who her friend is spending her time with. Plus the fact that she's basically a fill in for a missing bridesmaid just irritated me. (Granted that Abby does live 1200 miles away)
Meh #3- I don't really like how Abby just gives people readings all willy nilly-like. Some people aren't prepared for that kind of shock and she's often blurting things out. But in this case she was just "off"?? I just don't buy it. Espcially since she was off on numerous occasions.
It's hard to read a cotton candy book like this when you can't imagine ever wanting to be friends with the main character.
I really like the psychic twist in these fluffy books. Since Victoria Laurie is an actual psychic, it makes it interesting.. other than that, though, it wasn't my favorite of hers that I've read by a long-shot. Usually, knowing that the books are just fun to read and not to be taken seriously in any way, I can ignore Abby's dumb behavior. In this one, though, I found myself getting really annoyed with the main character and how conceited she is and this feeling like the author just assumes anyone reading the book would agree with her dumb thoughts/behavior. After a while it really grated on me..
The book almost lost me with this one, "I rolled my eyes and turned away. This woman was coming close to deserving a bitch slap..." Seriously? A bitch slap??! Ugh.
Goodness but this girl gets shot/stabbed/concussed/assaulted a lot. For someone's who's supposed to be psychic, she's really not very good at listening where her own future is concerned.
This mystery took Abby out of Detroit and off to Colorado for murder and mayhem. A wedding shouldn't be such a deadly thing...
A good twisty tale, I rather liked this one. I also like that she spent some time away from Dutch for a spell. It's good to take a break. ;) We also got to meet all kinds of new characters - and even got a chance to see her parents which we've heard so much about. Pacing went rocketing along which was nice, making this a quick read, that was really enjoyable overall. I can't wait to grab the next one!
This story begins with the heroine getting shot and facing her killer as she prepares to be shot again. Then we hop backwards to see how this all comes together. Abby breaks up with Dutch on Valentine's Day because she disappears from his "aura." In her misery, she heads to Denver early for her friend's wedding just to get out of town. And gets involved in a murder. It's a good, suspenseful read. I liked it a lot.
I am not hugely fond of Abby, but I do like the idea of her abilities, so I ended up reading this book despite my misgivings after the last one.
Abby is still managing to get on my nerves on occasion, acting rashly and ignoring her so called guides when she really shouldn't, which always gets her in trouble. This time is no different and she ends up breaking up with her boyfriend because of it, before leaving town to attend one of her childhood friend's weddings.
Unfortunately worrying about being alone at a wedding isn't her only problem, since she soon discovers that the bridesmaid she's replacing at the wedding didn't simply go after her ex boyfriend, but is in fact dead. The town sheriff who happens to be the brother of the bride and Abby's childhood crush, asks her for help in discovering what happened to the dead bridesmaid, and the sparks between them are another thing that she has to deal with.
The case seems to be more complicated than they initially thought when another bridesmaid turns up dead, while Abby herself seems to be in danger as well. .
Mystery solved, relationship issues cleared up, and life moving on for Abby, who returns home to have more adventures in Crime Seen which comes up next.
Jumped into this series mid-stream. It was pretty entertaining, even if I found quite a few aspects frustrating. The drama between Abby and her boyfriend was ridiculous and contrived. Additionally, it was really easy to figure out who the killer was early in book. Despite this, I found "Killer Insight" easy to get into and devoured it in a single day. I liked the characters enough to potentially pick-up another book in the series.
This is the fourth book in the Psychic Eye Mystery series that I have thoroughly enjoyed! Although it can be a stand alone book, I really like the way I'm getting to know the characters as the series progresses.
In Killer Insight, Abby, a professional psychic who sometimes helps the police with cases, and her FBI agent boyfriend, Dutch, have had a less than romantic Valentine's Day dinner, culminating in Abby realizing the relationship is over and asking Dutch to please leave. Heartbroken, she reluctantly agrees to fly to Denver to be a bridesmaid for her friend Ellie, thinking the change of scenery will do her some good. The scenery is definitely an improvement when she sees her friend's hunky policeman brother Duffy! Unfortunately she also intuitively learns that one of the bridesmaids is dead. Not wanting to upset Ellie, she voices her concern to Duffy, and the two of them try to solve the mystery of the missing bridesmaid. A serial rapist/murderer is also in the area, and some of the clues are pointing at Ellie's fiancé. As the bridesmaids start dropping like flies, Abby's change of scenery may be a permanent one unless they can catch the killer.
I loved this one just as I did the others because I really got caught up in the characters and the storyline. Just when I thought I had the mystery figured out and was waiting for the denouement, there would be another interesting plot twist! I also really like the way Abby uses her gift and how she worries about the ethics of whether or not to tell her friend the messages she is receiving. The little bit of romance to help Abby's bruised heart was nice, too! A great, engrossing read!
I had no idea that so many spirits were hovering around just to prove that Abby's powers are genuine. The book was great, but the constant grandstanding "oh, you don't believe me? Your dead relative says _______" really ruined it for me. There was also one part where Laurie really contradicted herself, as in one part where she said that psychics weren't always turned "on", yet Abby is always able to switch on to contradict a skeptic or get that oh so convenient clue.
Anyway, onto the plot. The plot surrounds Abby as she heads back to her old home town for a friend's wedding. What should have been a fun trip back to memory lane turns into disaster when Dutch dumps her on Valentine's day and a missing bridesmaid ends up being dead.
I did enjoy this book, but like I said... Laurie seems to spend way too much time showing off to skeptics. It's a horrible trend in her books that every skeptic is "shown the way", yet the only person who doesn't believe her is automatically a drunk loser. (Who is the only person in the series so far who wasn't convinced by Abby's miraculous psychic abilities.) That normally wouldn't be so bad, but I get the feeling that Laurie's using these books to lash out at the naysayers. The book is good & I recommend it, I just wish that the books weren't so formulaic. If not for that problem I would have easily given this book a much higher score.
This was one of my least favorite books in the series, mostly because the book starts with my least favorite TV show plot devise. This is where the show opens with the main character is in some dire circumstance, and then goes back in time to show you how they got there.
This book was made worse by the character knowing this was a flash back and constantly adding negative foreshadow at the end of chapters. "Oh if only I'd done X instead...." Kind of stuff.
Still a good series, but this one drove me nuts.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It had earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
This is the fourth book in the Abby Cooper, A Psychic Eye Mystery series. I just adore this series. Picking up one of these books is like catching up with a bunch of old friends. And I just love Abby. She's so darn cool! I've actually had this book on my bookshelf for almost a year, but because I put it with the other ones, it was in the back. :/ And it wasn't until I picked up the fifth book last weekend that I remembered I still hadn't read this one. Lol.
Anyway. I loved it! Pretty much read the bulk of it during two nights. I got started, just wanting to read the first chapter, but kept going and going. This morning I had about twenty pages to go - just got too tired to finish it last night - and just had to get through it before doing anything else.
I definitely wasn't disappointed! It was awesome. Who would've thought that Abby (who is a psychic, BTW) would have to solve a mystery while attending an old friend's wedding. Phew! But that's exactly what happens. She gets caught up in the middle of an awful mess that slowly unravels...
Killer Insight begins when Abby and Dutch seem to have broken up. She hasn't gotten a call from him in days, and she believes he doesn't want her anymore. But when she goes to Colorado for a friend's wedding things start to get really complicated for her. People start dying who know her friend, and she ends up around her childhood crush a lot.
Add into the fact that another killer is on the loose, and Abby is making some crazy choices in this one as well. But it was nice to see her respected by the police at least somewhat in this one.
The only thing that annoyed me was what Abby with her crush, I wish she hadn't made that mistake. But other than that I thought the story was really interesting, and I enjoyed it a lot.
And the ending was pretty crazy and made it really interesting and good. I can't wait to read more in this series now.
I had gotten away from this series for some reason and now I can't think why. If the first 3 were as good as this one... The heroine, Abby, is sharp, funny, compassionate, oddly naive, and has a fascinating and satisfying psychic ability. The supporting characters are strong, the romance rewarding... In this book, Abby visits Denver for a friend's wedding, but bridesmaids start vanishing, and the groom might be a suspect. Laurie leaves breadcrumb trails of information throughout the book, and while they might seem random, it all ties together in the end. Some might seem obvious, but the less-obvious or forgotten ones bring delightful surprises. This is only book 4, and book 8 is due out in July. I've already downloaded #5 and am starting it immediately.
This book was a bit better than the last books that I've read in the series - although, I gotta say - Mercury Retrograde was a huge tipoff when things started to get screwy with Dutch and Abby. However, it was well-played. :)
Again, Abby needs a temper lesson and needs to stop flying off the handle. Her character is becoming shrill and intolerant. It's starting to make me like her less.
Duffy and Ellie were good supporting characters and the twist was actually something I didn't see coming until the last ten pages. Dutch, still a sweetheart and Viv cracked me up.
This book is a mix of mystery, romance, and chick-lit. While I read it I didn't enjoy it as entirely as I would have with the other books in the series. Killer Insight was a long read but it was average for me. The suspense is delivered excellently as well as the mystery, character development, and storyline. It was a light read but nothing spectacular or off-the-charts. However, I do recommend it because the entire series is delightful and fresh for me as I've never read a book about a psychic. I do recommend reading the entire series in order. 3/5 stars.
This one isn't as good as some of Laurie's earlier books in this series...but it doesn't mean I didn't go out and order every other book in her series once I finished this one. As usual, I read this one in one day and I loved it! It makes me want to either be a psychic or befriend one. I really enjoyed this story--I felt like it gave us some insight into Abby's life outside her role as a psychic. While Laurie's books are "easy" and "mindless," I can't help but love her and would recommend her to anyone and everyone!
Killer Insight by Victoria Laurie is the 4th book in the Psychic Eye mystery series. Professional psychic Abigail Cooper is called on by her friend Ellie to fill in as a bridesmaid at her upcoming wedding after one of the bridesmaids takes off. When she is shown a photo of the missing bridesmaid, Abby immediately sees that she is dead and becomes involved in the investigation. Another fast paced exciting addition to the series. It was interesting to see how some insights can be interpreted in different ways. A difficult book to put down until the end.
Chick lit psychic mystery. It opens with Abby asking herself why she didn't get a psychic warning that this was the killer - an excellent question. Then we go back and watch Abby's romance break up and all of her friend's bridesmaids murdered one by one, much to Abby's mystification. It was a fair enough read once I got into it, but I won't be reading the others.
