The Guild Codex: Warped #4

Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures

Rate this book
What’s a hardworking MagiPol agent need to do to get a little R&R?

Between Agent Söze, the treacherous Internal Affairs tyrant who’s taken over my precinct, and the super illegal sorcery my partner Lienna was hiding in said precinct—which is now missing—my usual routine of busting magical criminals has fallen apart in favor of hectic damage control.

But that went out the window too when a respected Guild Master was found dead. Agent Söze is trying to cover it up, which is all the reason I need to make solving the murder my top priority.

Except now Agent Söze is trying to arrest and/or kill me. Not entirely unexpected, but both dangerous and highly irritating.

With the clock ticking on the next mysterious Guild Master murder, Lienna and I have to find a way to prove Agent Söze is behind it all. We need rock-solid evidence to bring him down, which is kind of tricky when crooked agents, shady allies, and cutthroat assassins keep complicating matters.

And if we don’t get to the bottom of it fast, my next day off will be in the morgue as another corpse to be swept under the corruption rug.

The plot thickens and expands from a few corrupt agents to possibly fucked-up higher-ups, well shit. We are now way past all the other series plotlines, so I was curious what would happen 👀 I shouldn't have worried, I couldn't put it down.

Don't you love it when books manage to scratch some itch in your brain you didn't even know about? 😅 Well, it's either that or Annette is putting hard drugs in her books. Not complaining either way!

Oh but Annette Marie fucking KNOWS what she's doing alright because first there was Zak, and now a big cameo from Zylas?? (GCU: Demonized series) 😍😍 I'm sorry but how am I meant to NOT lose my mind?? And the next book will deliver Darius King himself!! Silver fox daddy Darius, okay, I'm okay... pfffft who am I kidding, super-fangirl mode fucking activated! 😳🤸😳

Oh and what's with Kit and collecting super badass hot guy friends? Because the way he just got curious and excited about Zylas, after the initial terror of meeting an (almost) unbound demon ebbed away, was hilarious and the highlight of the book 😍

The romantic part of Kit&Lienna relationship will probably never NOT bother me. I like their partnership and deepening friendship, but the pining and the sexual attraction mixed in? Leaves me stone cold ✋

MmmMmMMMmMmMmmmmMM. I don't know. I really don't know.

Listen, listen. I liked this book. Of course, I liked this book. At this point, I'll like anything Annette writes. She's just one of those authors for me, so regardless of characters and worlds and settings, I know I'm in for a good time.

And Kit's books are a good time! The story arc for this Warped series is actually VERY top tier and I'm invested in ways I can't fully articulate right now cause it's 1am and I'm running on five hours of sleep at best. It's just!!!!

It's gotten to the point where I kind of just block out the overly excessive Kit-ness. Sometimes, it feels like too much with the constant jokes and references and whatnot. This is 100% a personal preference, so I'm trying not to affect my overall enjoyment of the whole series. I've seen that Kit can be a little dark, and frankly, I know I like that more than the happy-go-lucky guy he always is. I want to see that development with his character, honestly.

I'm just not on board with the romance in this series. I don't feel it! I don't like it. I'm not a fan of Lienna as the love interest. Is it because it's told from a guys' pov? I'm not sure! It just falls incredibly flat for me. I'm the type of person who searches up the word 'kiss' in almost every book I start cause I know what I want. I didn't with this one, and I've been anticipating it for a while now.

I don't want to be a hater, however. I did like this book, and it's wholly because of how good Annette and Rob are at writing together. It's full of nonstop action and if I had more brain cells to comprehend the whole guild codex arc, I would be even more amazed at how Annette is still managing to keep her readers on our toes and still coming up with new ways to trip us up. Things have gotten a lot deeper on Kit's side of the law, and I am thoroughly hooked on it.

Anywayyyyy. 3.5 I think?

After the murder of two guild GMs, Agents Kit and Lienna are forced to go on the run. The bad guys have taken over the MPD and Kit and Lienna find themselves Most Wanted one and two.

Another entertaining book set withing the Annette Marie's Guild Codex world. Now the wait for Book 5 which might be a little longer after the author was involved in a car accident and needs to take some time to recover.

You’ll want to listen to this series in order, but I also recommend you start from the beginning of the Guild Codex Universe. You can find the chronological order: The Guild Codex Universe on the author's website.

The story takes place a little after More Than a Little Warped. I recommend reading the novella first. Kit & Lienna are MagiPol agents. Agent Söze, an Internal Affairs bully, has taken over the precinct. Missing sorcery and accusations complicates things further. One could say their nemesis is evil.

Kit and Lienna are trying to solve the murder of a Guild Master, but Söze is trying to cover it up and they’ll need to stay one step ahead. The story was intense with plenty of action, near death moments and some twists. Including working with characters from the Demonized and Spellbound series. I loved it!

The romance is progressing, and it’s a slow-burn. While it sometimes can frustrate me, I love their chemistry and the strong friendship that is developing along the way. It feels genuine and I look forward to more.

The ending has left me excited for Mage Assassins & Other Misfits, which releases in September 2023. The authors set us up perfectly with hints of things to come. If you haven’t yet dipped into the Guild Codex universe, I highly recommend it. Perfect for fans of urban fantasy, paranormal suspense and unique, well-honed characters.

Iggy Toma narrates and did a wonderful job of bringing us the voice of Kit & the others. His pacing and tones added to the overall experience. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

This book was a great combo of heartwarming friendship, breathtaking suspense, and the believable kind of wonderful and low-key romance that can last for a lifetime. Kit/Lienna is now my favorite ship in the Guild Codex universe!

**I voluntarily read and reviewed a review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Any quotes were taken from the advanced readers copy and as such may not be accurate or present in the final version**

Stolen Sorcery is yet another fantastic instalment in the Guild Codex universe. I really shouldn't still be shocked that Annette manages to interweave each timeline seamlessly, bring in our favourite characters for cameos (and seriously, there are some fantastic cameos here!), and still manage to come up with non stop action, snarky humour and put-the-book-down good surprises.

Hello, rock. Greetings, hard place. Glad to be between you both this fine Vancouver morning.

Kit and Lienna have really got their hands full in this one, and I enjoyed watching their friendship and relationship grow in complexity and depth. Their slowly budding romance is aalll the slow burn; at times frustrating but also beautiful to watch the building chemistry and physical connections.

The events of Stolen Sorcery come right after the novella in the same series - More than a Little Warped (Warped #3.5) - and I wouldn't recommend trying to skip that one (not that you would want to miss out on more Kit and Lienna goodness as well as plenty of your other favourites Guild Codex Characters!). In terms of series timelines, the novella is during the finales of both Spellbound and Demonized, and this book comes right after, but before the first Unveiled book. You can find a list of books in publication order, chronological order and recommended reading order on Annette's website.

Possibly some of my absolute favourite moments in all the series are the crossovers and cameos, and both my favourite demon and my favourite GM make great appearances here.

Hanging above the bar, almost invisible in the shadows, was a silver war hammer. The “Hammer” of the Crow and Hammer. A thick, heavy, symmetrical head at the end of a long, aged wood haft. Why, hello there. I didn’t need to be stronger or smarter than my enemies; I just needed a bigger stick. I was sure Zylas would approve.

For any Annette Marie fan, for any Guild Codex fan, for anyone who just loves a great story to be immersed in, I cannot recommend Warped enough.

“You don’t speak demonic, do you?” I was fairly confident that Hellbeast Languages 101 wasn’t a standard abjuration course. But I was just a lowly psycho warper, so what did I know? “No,” she admitted. “But the syntax doesn’t match. And think about it. Most of it is a meaningless interjection. How would he translate it?” I frowned. She took a hand off the wheel to hold up a finger. “Also, he said he would teach you ‘one thing.’ Not necessarily the thing you asked for.” “Eshanā hh’ainun mailēshta,” I whispered to myself, mulling over each syllable. Then I weighed it against its alleged English counterpart: “Yippee-ki-yay, m—”

I always love Kit. His personality is fun to follow and although he doesn't always agree with Magi-Pol and may bend the rules, he always stays true to himself and what he thinks is right.

Kit is lots of fun, as usual, and I especially enjoyed the cameos of Robin and Zylas. And with the ending of this (and the title of the next one) I'm excited about Darius taking a more central role in Kit and Lienna's fight against their newly-revealed "big bad".

05/28/2024: Reread. (Audiobook!)

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

This was Kit's best book yet! This story was so magnetic and mesmerizing. No joke, I was drawn into this plot like moths to a flame. It was so enchanting, fast-paced, and unpredictable. I couldn't anticipate what would happen next and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time trying to unravel all the mysteries in this one.

I love how atmospheric these books are. This is urban fantasy that grips you and makes you feel like you are right in the thick of things right along with the characters. And the plot? Just, wow. I was so enamored with the direction of the plot. It was so addicting and made me anticipate avenues that the authors would take us down throughout the remainder of the series. I have always loved Annette Marie's storytelling and I also love how she and Rob Jcobsen's combined storytelling bring Kit and Lienna to life with such enthusiasm and authenticity.

I love how Kit and Lienna feel very authentic. Their personalities aren't forced and it is easy for the reader to connect with them and root for them. They both have an incredible character arc throughout the series. The reader gets to gradually see deeper and deeper into what makes them tick as the series progresses. I think that both Lienna and Kit had some significant character growth in this book.

The romance was kicked up a notch in this book, which I totally loved. We have seen Lienna and Kit become closer and closer throughout this series and their feelings for each other are written all over their fictional faces. Their feelings show up in everything they do and say. Lienna has been against coworker relations from the beginning but she was the one initiating romance in this book so who knows where things will go. Either way, I am rooting for them. Kit and Lienna are so well matched because they balance out parts of each other.

Overall, this was a fun and exciting addition to the Warped series. This was the most thrilling book in the series yet. The books just keep getting better and better. If you love urban fantasy with magic or police procedurals then you'll love this book. Kit and Lienna are both such unique characters that always end up surprising me when things get dicey. All of the books in the Guild Codex universe are excellent and I highly recommend them all. If you haven't started any books in this world yet then you should pick up Three Mages and a Margarita by Annette Marie to start at the very beginning. You'll thank me later.

This was so much fun. Waiting for the audio release was hard like always but worth it. I am so excited with where this one leaves off, I want more of the Silver Fox! There are some great cameo moments from characters from other series in the world which I loved immensely. There is a lot of sneaking and running around in this one which was fun. Not as much learning about magic types at this point which is fair. Also not as much of Lienna's magic cube or magic in general. I don't know what else to say about this series at this point other than I love it.

Who knows. Maybe this series is my favorite for the dorky protagonist and the compassionate other protag and their buddy-cop/partners/friends dynamic. Plus the slightly less awkward content, though it's still pretty much the standard of all Marie's books.

Another installment from our trustee Kit! Here we see an unfurling of a complex conspiracy within the MPD, a VERY IMPORTANT CAMEO and the return of our beloved Crow and Hammer!!!!

The only thing that I think I will say is that I still dislike the authorial voice in this one. Something about Kit’s voice really rubs me the wrong way and comes across as juvenile. But he still somehow comes across as a sympathetic protagonist so I did enjoy seeing his interactions with other characters. Lienna on the other hand …. Boring as cardboard. Ugh.

I am a diehard fan of the Guild Codex universe so will absolutely pick up the next instalment, but my head canon still says Kit and Zak belong together 🤪

I received a free copy and am voluntarily reviewing it.

Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures starts shortly after More Than a Little Warped. Kit and Liena are sent to investigate a mysterious GM death while Söze is still wrecking havoc in the precinct. It quickly escalates with Söze trying to cover up the murder and going after Liena and Kit. This book started off strong and kept going with a steady pace and plenty of danger.

Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventure has a bit of a different vibe than previous books with Liena and Kit having to sneak around more and trying not to be caught by Söze. This book felt quite tense at times, but I liked how Kit often tried to lighten things with his humor. I really enjoyed reading about Kit and Liena. In some parts I felt like there was a lot of them reacting to things that are happening to them due to the nature of the plot in this book, but then they do start to figure things out and everything comes together at the end of the book. There's also a clear set up for the next book with not everything fully getting resolved. I was able to predict a few of the twists/ reveals in this book before the character did, which was a bit of a bummer as it felt obvious to me now and then the characters figured it out later than I did.

I really like Kit as a main character, he's fun to read about and he has some interesting magical powers too. I like reading about him. In this book there are a few more enemies that have a defense against Kit's powers, which makes sense, but it also sometimes got in the way of him being awesome with his warp powers. There were less new warp powers in this book and mostly more of the same, but I still like reading about how Kit uses his powers to get through situations. I also liked the scene toward the end where he gets involved in a battle in a unique way.

The romance seems to be progressing a bit more in this book. There is less tension between Liena and Kit due to their opposing viewpoints at times and I felt like they became even more of a team and partners in this book. There is something Liena isn't telling and I was curious to see when the truth would come out, I liked when she finally confided in Kit and how Kit handled it. I feel like they're growing closer and I look forward to seeing where their romance goes.

There are some cameo appearances of characters form the Demonized and Spellbound series as well in this book. And I definitely recommend reading these series in the intended order as I think it's more fun that way. Some appearances feel a bit forced, but it's nice to see more of characters I already know and like. And the direction things take at the end of the book with Kit teaming up with a side character from one of those series is quite promising.

To summarize: This was another great read in this series, this book starts of strong and keeps going with a steady pace. There is a bit more tension in this book with Kit and Liena being on the run and not being able to move about as easily as in previous books. At times it felt like they were mostly reacting to what was happening, but I liked when they started figuring things out and piercing together what was going on. I enjoy reading about Kit and his unique warp powers, even though there are more enemies that seem to be able to withstand them in this book. The romance between Kit and Liena seems to be slowly building, with them feeling more like a team and there's less of their opposing viewpoints. There are plenty of cameo appearances with characters from the Demonized and Spellbound series. I look forward to the next book!

5 Stars.

I just adore this series, every single book in the extended Guild Codex is such a delight and the Warped series is always such a fun, action-packed, emotional page turner. Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures absolutely lives up to the incredibly high expectation I have for this series overall, delivering on action from the very first page, brilliant dialogue, great characters, an extension of the world building and an overall progression of the broader plotlines.

Kit's voice is snarky and joke-fuelled as usual, which is always such a delight to read, and Lienna provides the perfect balance to their partnership and overall dynamic. The rest of the gang are all there, including trusty Eggsy. As the series has grown, I have been constantly in awe of how Annette Marie (and Rob Jacobson in the Warped books!) have woven together all the different series into this huge world, but this book in particular is really an easter eggs delight for long time readers and seeing all the familiar faces so fun.

I also really want to praise how the overall plot of all the books overlaps so wonderfully and continues to build with every installment. The romance is also a real delight - I always mention the fantastic slow-burn romances in all of these books and I am really enjoying the development of Kit and Lienna's romance. I am also very excited about the turn of the story in this book and the characters being brought more to the forefront - let's just say it involves a long term favourite character of mine!

I only every encourage readers to pick this series up and this is another stellar installment. I always turn to Annette Marie's books during a reading slump or when I'm feeling like a pick-me-up, fun read and they always deliver.

I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I'm really liking Kit and Lienna, and even if their "romance" is moving VERY slowly, I love that that is not the focus of this partnership. Instead, their growing friendship and their belief in each other, as well as their willingness to call each other out (usually her calling him out, but not always) as well as forgive each other's foibles. Bottomline--I really love their partnership and friendship without all the complicated relationship stuff getting in the way. This one takes place immediately after the novella More Than a Little Warped, and while reading novellas are not always necessary, I think it would be helpful if you read it first, so that Soze going off the rails doesn't seem so sudden. Plus, the novella overlaps the last Spellbound book, and helps explain how Kit suddenly arrived from seemingly nowhere.

I loved how the Crow and Hammer showed up in this book, and there were some hilarious scenes with not just the Spellbound folks but also Zylas and Robin. When Kit suddenly spots the hammer, I was dying. Just look for that scene.

This series started out slowly, and I wasn't so sure that I liked Kit and Lienna, but after this book, I am glad there are at least two more books planned for this series. I can't wait to read them both!

This review was originally published on Myth and Magic Book Club

Myth: 4/5

This was my favorite in the Warped series so far. Kit has really grown on me, and his reads of Lienna are increasingly delightful. I think ultimately my favorite part of this book is the ending because it gives me so much excitement for the next book, already titled Mage Assasins and Other Misfits, so you can just guess who Kit’s newest partner in crime is.

Magic: 4/5

I wish we knew more about Lienna’s power at this point, but since everything is through Kit’s eyes and there is still a bit of a barrier between them, it’s understandable. Kit’s magic, though, has had that steady build. Is the reality warp a real power? What’s its deal? What is the cost?

Overall: 4/5

Can’t wait for the next book. It brings in one of the most mysterious and likely fan-favorite characters from the other Guild Codex books. Kit and Lienna’s chemistry is still on a low simmer, but I thoroughly enjoy the plethora of movie references and fast-paced plot.

I've been a fan of Annette Maries books for years, and when I got the oportunity to get an ARC copy of the latest book in the warped series I was so excited! And it did not disappoint!
Her books are what I categorice as "easy-reads", and this is a good thing. I don't need to use any brainpower to read it, the story just plays in my mind like a movie. And Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures are a great action-comedy, and I really enjoyed it!

From the first page the story was filled with action, a bit of mystery and as always Kit's wit and jokes.
The thing that would take the book from 4 to 5 stars in my oppinion is to give Lienna a bit more personality, I feel like she 'disappears' a bit, like we don't get to know her. Which makes sense since Kit has that same feeling, but it also makes me less engaged in the 'love interest scope', and I don't really care if they end up tohether or not.

I just love Kit and Lienna. Warped is rivaling spellbound in my opinion. It’s a little more lighthearted than part 6,7,8 of spellbound and *still* deep, moving and full of character development. I love seeing Kit explore his powers, his morality and himself through these books. He’s incredibly funny and just a really really good guy. Kit would be the kind of person that you could have great discussions with and who would actually be open to changing his mind. These books make me literally laugh out loud (not just snorting) and squeal through the slow burn. Really exited for the fifth book — and sometime in 2025 hopefully the sixth! 💗

First of all, I just want to say thank you to Annette Marie for giving me an ARC of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. No compensation was given, offered, or taken to alter the opinion.

Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures is the fourth book in The Guild Codex: Warped series. This book moves at a rapid pace, going from one high-stakes action scene to another. I love Kit's personality with his humor and "movie buff" pop culture references. The action combined with the humor makes these books very enjoyable to read. Annette is a brilliant writer because the connections between all the Guild Codex series is really well thought out. I love when we get cameos of our favorite characters from the other two series. It's genius how the storytelling brings everything together. I highly recommend this series! It has it all: a magical world, amazing characters, and fast-paced action. It's always so hard waiting for the next book to come out...

Kit just cracks me up. I love him. But I hate agent Soze. I like that this story starts up with Soze still somehow in charge and still being the biggest douche ever. Of course that leads to our sweet angels, Kit and Lienna, having a hit put out on them and then their lives are in danger. These two, Blythe, the mole and Eggsy are going to find out who is trying to ruin so many lives. And eventually Darius will be helping. I absolutely cannot wait for that. We also get to *finally* see some realization from Kit that Lienna is showing him she cares. Come on Kit, get it together.

This one started a little rough for me, I was worried I wasn’t going to like it, but then stuff started happening and just kept happening. There were some good team ups/interactions with characters from the other storylines in the guild codex series and it had an interesting ending that had me checking to see when the next book comes out (September).

The end was really intriguing, and I'm glad we get to find out more about Darius. I am looking forward to that in the next book.
But the beginning waffled, and the whole book wasn't paced well.
Once again, Lienna and Kit work great as partners and friends but not as a romantic couple...I don't feel much there. The plot and Kit being Kit and solving problems his way is the main draw of the series.
Also, I basically read the entire Guild Codex books in 2 weeks because I really love the worldbuilding lol.

This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures

A Guildmaster has been found dead and Agent Söze is covering up the evidence. Kit and Lienna are determined to find out what he is hiding. But with Söze out to clear the board of any agent working against him, they must tread carefully. Söze won’t hesitate to put them down, and without concrete proof of what he is doing, Kit and Lienna don’t have a chance.

Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures ups the danger Kit and Lienna have to survive. While they are still trying to do their jobs as MPD agents and solve the murder of the Guildmaster, Söze is running interference and actively trying to remove them from the picture. The corrupt agent will use all kinds of dirty tricks and criminals to achieve his goals. And while Kit and Lienna make a dynamic team, they will not have enough support alone to take down Söze.

The leaps and bounds Kit and Lienna have made as a team are incredible. Starting as partners who miscommunicated and generally didn’t think in line with one another, they have grown from each other's influence. The slow simmering romance adds an underlying temptation for readers as well. And for those who fear romance will overshadow the rest of the plot, it most certainly does not. There is still plenty of magic-slinging action and close calls. If anything, Kit’s embarrassment and confusion over Lienna are endearing. He really wants to make sure he isn’t pushing boundaries without consent.

Kit took a while to solidify himself as a character worthy to follow, but his journey to where he is now in the series is worth the wait. There is an underlying mystery around his powers, and what exactly he will be fully capable of. Each book is a more intense exploration of the world and the various people and magics that create it.

The Guild Codex world is a great adventure for those who enjoy urban fantasy, fast-paced plots, character development, and a touch of slow-burning romance. Stolen Sorcery & Other Misadventures shows that Kit and Lienna have much more to learn and accomplish. And I can’t wait to see what they tackle next.
