After escaping from The Corridor with DogThing, Rudy and Adler, James discovers that the world awaiting him outside is just as harsh as the one he had left behind.
The horrors that he had escaped from, that lurked in the darkness, would continue to haunt him in the bright sunlight of The Broken Lands.
Will he find a way to recover his memories?
Who was the creature that hunted him in The Corridor?
GLYNN JAMES is an author of science fiction, post-apocalyptic, dark fantasy, horror, and dystopian fiction. His love of science fiction began when he was eight years old after discovering HP Lovecraft and Richard Matheson, and then later on Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, James Herbert, Clive Barker, and Stephen King.
In addition to being author of the “ALTERLIGHT” supernatural mystery thriller series, he is author of the dark sci-fi series "DIARY OF THE DISPLACED", the post-apocalyptic "THROWN AWAY" series, and co-author of the "ARISEN" series and the “DUSTFALL” series.
James, DogThing and all the Maw, and his two ghostly friends Rudy and Adler have escaped the Corridor. But their move to a new world? dimension? plane? is a classic textbook example of "out of the frying pan, into the fire." This new world that they find themselves on is reminiscent of a 21st century zombie post-apocalyptic nightmare. The George Romero kind.
Nice. I found another happy place. Thank you, Mr. James.
An assortment of new players are introduced to James and Crew, particularly post-apocalyptic Reg, with two double-barreled shotguns blazing. James finds Females make an appearance in this book as well, even though they form a secret society of healers who keep apart from men. I hope they author isn't sharing any of his own troubles with the fairer sex.
Overall, I enjoyed The Broken Lands and am quite enamored of this series. Onward to the next book!
When James Halldon escapes his prison that is the Corridor, he, Rudy, Adler, and DogThing, his maw friend, set out on a new adventure. Along the way they come across new creatures that Cutterjack has created. When James meets Reg, he travels in a new direction, searching for the Sisters of Rahl. Many hardships come along the way, but when they reach the Sisters, James's memory will return. When he learns about his family, and those he left behind, he returns to the Corridor to complete a deal, but will a turn in events leave him alive?
In this book, James never travels without DogThing. Reg has traveled alone for many years. James has no memory and does not know who he is. Reg, on the other hand, knows exactly who he is and where he is going. The similarities between the two of them may include the fact that they are both members of the Resistance. They are also both over 100 years old. Plus, they are both looking for their wifes at some point in the book. Out of the two, I liked James better. Reg was suspicious at first. I also like James's personality more.
I would personally recommend this book to higher level readers. This is very confusing and filled with surprises. I would not recommend it to people with no patience because the book ends in a cliff hanger and the last book isn't out yet. If you like action, zombies, and unsuspecting turns of events, then this is the book for you!!!
Not QUITE as incredible as part 1, Diary Of The Displaced, but still a very good read. We get a lot of answers to the questions that we were left with at the end of book 1...for instance what exactly had been going on during the whole book and why James couldn't remember why he was there?! So that was definitely a plus. I thought the author did that in a very unique way. Yes, we've seen flashbacks before but these were different to say the least. These flashbacks completely took control of James to where he wasn't even aware of his surroundings...I'm sure you can gather where this is going right? Yeah, not good to be distracted in an apocalyptic-style world where there's zombies and zombie leaders and everything else!! I did add this to my vampire shelf as well, even though there's barely any vampire-related stuff in it. A certain group of persons turn out to be vampires though, so in all fairness onto the shelf it goes. Really though...this is not a freaking vampire book!!!! No!!! It's let's-kick-some-zombie butt in very cool techno fashion, with an awesome companion of DogThing as our sidekick. :D
James has really created a storyline that draws the reader deeper and deeper into his bizarre worlds and realities. He has characters who make you want to know more about each of them and because of that, what could be a very complicated sell with the layers of reality and worlds he introduces the reader to, we are able to keep from getting lost in the complexity of it all. He tantalizes the reader along with very slow character development which, because they are such great characters, makes you almost desperate to know more, not unfulfilled enough to walk away but not fulfilled enough to feel comfortable. I adore Rudy and Adler. Their expanded role within the story really made me smile. I love the quirky little family James, Rudy, Adler and DogThing created. It's funny but I found myself almost irritated when he introduced Reg into the story...interrupting the atmosphere he had created with James, Rudy, Adler and DogThing. So many interesting twists and surprises. And the end...oh the end...can't wait to read more of the adventures of this crew of misfits that I grew so attached to.
November 21, 2023: I was preparing to start Book 3 when I decided to re-read this book, Book 2, even though it had been only 90 days. I find myself rereading the books in this series over and over again because I enjoy them so much. This one is particularly good because of all the background it provides, especially on DogThing - he's my favorite!
August 18, 2023: Absolutely fascinating! If you had told me there was a book about a resistance soldier with near total memory loss trying to escape a dystopian universe accompanied by two disembodied ghosts I would have said "that sounds corny!" Except, it isn't. This story is fascinating and just keeps getting more and more interesting. I can't wait to find out what happens to James, DogThing, Rudy, Adler, Reg and everyone else. And I can't wait to see what else James remembers!
Following on from the Diary of the Displaced: The Journal of James Halldon we follow our intrepid survivor as he discovers the answers to his many questions, giving rise to some very surprising revelations and yet more questions. In the process not only do DogThing, Adler and Rudy stick by his side by he finds himself aquiring even more friends and supporters as he finds himself to be more well known and important than he could have imagined. The writing is superb and thoroughly engrossing and the world of the Broken Lands is unnerving in its familiarity and desolation. A great addition to the series and I can't wait to read about Halldon's next exploits.
Another great read in the series, set in a strange and disjointed world with enemies on all sides.
As James continues his arduous journey, additional characters are introduced, alongside familiar ones. Together they make an intriguing plot come to life.
This installment also reveals important details of James' forgotten past and further unveils the reasons behind his enemies' actions.
Overall, some fabulously imaginative storytelling, yet there were subtle differences between this and book one - some of the humour was lost, phrases like 'off of' appeared (an American bad grammar thing) and there were numerous typos. However, I still enjoyed it...and love DogThing.
It's strange that this story progresses slowly yet rushes by at the same time. The whispers of the past are entwined with the actions of the present and it is compelling.
Absolutely loving this series. I love DogThing and the Maw. Love how this book plays out and how things become clearer for James. Since I started this series, I find myself wondering what will happen next and itching to carry on reading.
Brilliantly written, and you can really picture the landscapes the author describes.
Finally, answers to the many questions that were raised in the first book. This book is chock full of answers about James, the Maw, what is going on, what the corridor is, who Cutterjack is. The plot is also much deeper than the first book. In Broken Lands we find out a lot about the main character and this opens up a whole new world different from the first book. There are a ton of potential new characters and plotlines. Broken Lands was not as thrilling and scary as the first book, with a man trapped in the dark with monsters. This one has an actual world to explore and other people. There are still gripping scenes but it doesn't have the same feel as the first book. The dark is so much scarier than the desert. The only couple of things that caused this book to lose some star rating was the length and the errors in the book. This book felt really short compared to the first book. According to Amazon, this book was 182 pages but it felt a lot shorter than that, it only took me a couple hours to finish and that many pages seems like a stretch. There were also quite a few spelling and grammar errors that I caught. It didn't take away from the story but it was annoying to have to read the sentence over a couple of times to try to make out what was being said due to spelling. Overall this book was still really good and I couldn't put it down, but it loses half a star for length and editing errors. 4.5 out of 5 stars and starting the third book.
This third book really joins together the first two books and makes sense of a lot of things that happened in both. After reading this book, you will know why things happened as they did in the first two books. While I was happy to spend more time with familiar characters, particularly Reggie from book two, the storyline has shifted away from what hooked me on the prior books.
In my opinion this is no longer the weird horror fiction that I so enjoyed from the previous books. This has become more of a fantasy adventure for me. It's not high fantasy with elves and goblins, mind you. But what started me on this series was the bizarre and weird stories, the dread of what lurked around the corner or the wonder at why things happened as they did. That's just not in this book. The Broken Lands gives you answers and drains the mystery out of the story. Some questions remain, but they are not as compelling as the ones that were answered.
All in all, this was an enjoyable read and I can still recommend it to fans of the series. It ends with a promise of more adventure to come. I know I will continue to read new books as they are released.
I loved the first book for its overwhelming sense of mystery; for the feeling that I was just about to understand what was happening and how things worked, but never got there.
This second book in the series continues that feeling, showing the reader an ever-expanding world of richly imagined places, people and things. Then about two-thirds of the way through the book revelations begin to come fast and furious with one gut-punching moment after another of "wait, he's what?" and "Oh my God, she's who?" Even when you think you understand the truth behind what is happening, there is more to learn.
Fill of imagination and intrigue, this book continues a series that is taking readers to the height of literary entertainment.
This is a must read! We finally get answers as to why James doesn't remember his past, the truth about The Corridor and Cutterjack, and his history with DogThing.
In The Broken Lands, James stumbled upon the new creatures Cutterjack has created. He also meets another tough character who's seeking his wife in this disjointed world.
This sequel like the first one is high on survival and mystery but I find this a little bit on the SciFi side, not as incredible as the first book, The Journal of James Halldon. I definitely recommend this to readers who like action and loves cliffhangers. Four stars!
I loved this book just as much if not more than its predecessor. In this second installment we learn more about our hero, James Halldon, and antagonist, Cutter Jack. The environment and characters are rich and unique. The detail so clear and vivid the reader might as well be walking along with James and Dogthing. This series is definitely a must read for fantasy readers of all ages. I haven't been so enthusiastic about a fantasy series since Eddings Belgarid, or King's D.T. series.
2nd book in series. Better than the first? Not sure- equal to, at least. Loved it. Wish there had been a recap of previous book, as I am such a voracious reader that at times I forget some bits. Didn't take long for me to remember though. Yes, this book really does have all the creatures I mention on my shelves in it. It's not cheesy, it's awesome! I think a character in the book is a crossover from another book, or maybe I just read too much. More please!
Another intriguing tale from Glynn James which sees James Halldon (and the readers) get some questions answered. Great to see some familiar faces from the author's others stories appear in the book, and I'm intrigued by the more fantastical elements introduced in this story (vampires and werewolves). The ending leaves the story open for a follow up which I eagerly await.
the first one was slightly farfetched at first but once you realized what was going on you were sucked right into this world and it only got better with the second
