With his family’s honor on the line, Norse warrior Erik Halverson has no choice but to follow the orders of the royal house of Denmark. Now he must follow his destiny—and royal command—to sail to Scotland, find his enemy’s weakest link, and abduct her. Their mistake, of course, was thinking the Sinclair lass wouldn’t fight back.

From the moment her four brothers took control of their clan, Hannah Sinclair has learned to stand tall and defend herself. So when a big, brawny, and admittedly handsome warrior tries to abduct her, she isn’t about to give in. And the more he tries, the more she’s determined to make it as hard as possible...and enjoy it all the while.

Now Norway’s greatest warrior has a Highland hellcat on his hands, and Odin help him, he can’t resist her. But with the brutal Sinclair brothers coming after them, Erik is out of options. War is inevitable. And when a man is forced to choose between duty and passion, only one will win…

I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!

I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).

I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

This was ok. All of these books are just ok. Fairly well written, enough research to be believable and fairly steamy sex scenes, but very little plot depth or character development. Basically these books are pretty much campy Scottish trope-soup. They pass the time but all blur together after awhile.
If you haven’t read this author before, this could be a fun, sexy, not too deep read, but I’m kind of sick of her now after reading about five of her books. These are extremely templated and because of that, really repetitious. Even my review is repetitious because I don’t have much to say other than meh, been there, read that.
This book runs up against a major premise problem that the plot twists just could not overcome; if these amazing Wolf Warriors are the greatest and fiercest fighters why then did they need to kidnap Hannah? Their queen wants her so she can control her warrior brothers who are the greatest and fiercest fighters, so she gets the greatest fiercest fighters to kidnap her. One of these two groups, either the current series’ warriors or the next series’ warriors will need to be lesser warriors for this to work. I think this Wolf Warrior business is a set up for yet another series of four strong men with a strong feisty sister (why change now?) it kind of doesn’t work if we are meant to believe these Norse warriors are so shit hot. This is obviously a bridge book carrying one series to another and because of that, it’s kind of weak plot wise and overrun with characters from past books, story recapping and set up characters for the next books. I dislike books like this because inevitably the story is weak, which it is here, add that to the lack of originality and this wasn’t a great addition.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my feedback.

Good story, decent heat, and loads of history to absorb. 3.5 STARS!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This book was pretty quick to capture my attention. We have some great characters that ramp up the interest and hold it throughout.
In some spots, it felt like this was part of a series of books. Come to find out it is, but that didn’t detract from the story. But you certainly know you have other connections that are an off-shoot and connected to the main characters in the story. However, I would classify it as a stand-alone.
When it comes to Highlander romance, you definitely get a lot of the history of the time as it pertains to the characters and their developing story. I have to say in this one I did lose track of all of the historical interactions of who’s supporting who, who is protecting who, who’s at war with who. It left me confused a few times.
What I really love about Highland Surrender is the connection between the main characters. It was one of those lust at first sight that grew into so much more. McCollum did us right with the romance portion along with the heat and steam.
While there are a lot of characters to keep track of, most of them secondary, there are still many opportunities for the main characters to interact alone. This book does have a lot of action and continual activity which keeps you engaged. There were a few places in the beginning chapters that bugged me with repetitive thoughts, but that was gone by about 1/4 in.
Overall, Highland Surrender has plenty of steamy romance and passion, and it certainly satisfied that Highlander itch I needed to scratch.
A stubborn Sinclair! Hannah’s story.
It’s 1536 and Hannah Sinclair, the Sinclair Brothers beloved sister is approaching thirty and her future as a mother looks bleak. She longs for a husband and family but there’s no one who tempts her. Hannah decides that this might be the time to take what she wants. After all a husband is no necessity for a child. Her sister-in-laws agree to help her. (That chat was rather comic!)
Erik Halverson is a Norseman, blackmailed by Queen Sophie of Denmark-Norway to kidnap Hannah in order to have a hold over the Sinclairs. She’s worried about their power being set against her daughter Anne, wife to King James of England. She holds Erik’s sister as her bargaining chip.
Hannah chooses Erik which leads to some close calls as she tries to seduce him, and of course leads to her eventual kidnapping.
Well, that does call the Four Horseman of the Acopolypse to ride, but not in the way Queen Sophie had envisaged.
The women surrounding Hannah are strong and compassionate. I love the actions of the younger girls Trix and Libby.
A solid, sprightly and often amusing read with a fair amount tension surrounding the tale.
An Entangled invite ARC via NetGalley.
Many thanks to the author and publisher.
Heather McCollum's Sons of Sinclair series ends with Highland Surrender, the fifth and final book. The novel follows Hannah Sinclair, sister to the Four Horsemen and a woman with no prospects for marriage at age 29. When handsome tradesman Erik Halverson visits, Hannah plans to seduce him. However, little does she know that Erik is a fierce leader in his own right, and his visit to the Sinclair Clan is to find their weakness and exploit it to control the fierce Sinclair Horsemen.
Highland Surrender is a tale of two people struggling to find happiness in their lives, both hesitant to open up, but together find the courage to surrender their hearts.
Erik and Hannah's journey is filled with challenges. Erik's commitment to his country, men, and family often clashes with his desire for Hannah. At times, I found myself admiring Erik, while at other times, I wanted to throw something at him! Hannah struggled to reconcile her feelings for Erik with his deception and betrayal. She refused to give in to Erik easily, and I was relieved to see her demand better for herself! The secondary characters add depth and humor to the story, especially Bàs and Joshua Sinclair, who are both lovable and entertaining. The little girls, Trix and Libby, were also a delight and played a significant role in Erik and Hannah's story. It was heartwarming to see how the Sinclairs came together to support one another.
Heather McCollum's storytelling is simply superb! Highland Surrender is a must-read for historical romance fans who love a hard-won happily ever after. The novel's true conflict will tug at your heartstrings, and the satisfying epilogue will leave you feeling fulfilled.
Norse warrior Erik Halverson is under orders of the royal house of Denmark to sail to Scotland, find his enemy’s weakest link, and abduct her. The mistake was thinking the Sinclair lass would be meek. From the moment her four brothers took control of their clan, Hannah Sinclair has learned to defend herself and she isn’t about to give in. Passion is inevitable, but can a war be prevented...?
This is the fifth and final book in the Sons of Sinclair series. While each story can technically stand alone, the family is highly involved.
I really loved the last book, but this one just didn't strike the same cord for me. Hannah loves her family and her clan, but she also felt lonely as the overprotected sister in a powerful plan. She wanted a child of her own and thought foreigner Erik was her chance to make it happen. I struggled to see how they would develop a deeper connection after he kidnapped her, but there were some smart plot choices that made it plausible. In the end, the romance felt secondary to the political plot.
Tropes: Warrior, Spinster, Kidnapped, Ship Trip, Forced Proximity, Enemies to Lovers
Heather McCullum's books always make me happy! They never try too hard and are always a quick, fun read. This was a nice addition to The Son's of Sinclair series. I loved that Hannah finally found love of her own.
I've enjoyed this whole series. They're a nice break from heavier reading. The characters are all likable, and the relationships are all super hot. Overall, this book was just a great time all around and a fun diversion.
Northern Scotland 1592
Hannah Sinclair is feeling a bit of sorrow and depressed watching all her sister in laws with their bairns. She isn’t jealous as she is happy for each of them, it is just that she desires a child of her own. Yet there was no special man for her to love and she was almost 30 years old!  Plus even if there was one it had to be one who wasn’t afraid of her four over protective brothers who are known as the four horsemen of the apocalypse! She felt she was surely headed for a lonely future of spinsterhood and every one of her nieces and nephews favorite Auntie. Yet she desired that special someone to love too but more than anything she wants a baby!
Erik Halverston of Norway has no choice, but to follow orders of the House of Denmark since his precious sister Iselin’s life is on the line. He will do anything to protect his sister, even deceiving the Sinclairs of Scotia. He really is not a villain, he is just between a rock and a hard place and his sister is the only family he has left and the only person he will ever love! According to his Queen he must find the Clan Sinclair’s weakest link and he feels kidnapping his Queen’s enemies sister is the answer, but he is in for a rude awakening since Hannah Sinclair is far from being a frightened,  biddable, timid, lass who will obey to an enemy! Especially one who lied claiming he was a trader not a Wolf Warrior seeking to abduct her and  forcing her to marry this middle aged chancellor to keep her brother’s in line! See who becomes the real prisoner in this battle of the sexes!
The attraction between Hannah and Eric is immediate, but there are a lot of obstacles in their way, for one he is trying to protect his sister who is in the Queen's custody. He is the General and leader of Wolf Warriors for the House of Denmark. For another he kidnapped a Sinclair sister and he will have to deal with four braw horsemen of the apocalypse who will not accept a man who took their sister against her will! So dealing with a dowager Queen and four protective braw highland brothers Eric will definitely be in a bad position, not to mention their wives. Will it take a warrior Sinclair sister to save him from some of his own mistakes even if he had no real choice. Will the brothers accept this or even care? Read and find out in this brilliant series finale!
In this series finale which I am sad to see end as I have loved each and every book in the Sinclair series including this book Highland Surrender. McCollum’s books have a bit of everything including true history. As this one for example has Dowager Sophie of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. She was the Dowager Queen, mother of King Christian IV of Denmark and Anne of Denmark. She was Regent of Schleswig-Holstein from 1590 to 1594. Her daughter Anne was married to King James of Scotland and James I of England and Ireland.
I absolutely love how she puts some true iconic characters from history into her fictional stories which are positively brilliant! She also does an amazing amount of research, including interviews with experts that is absolutely extraordinary! This also includes enchanting landscapes, breathtaking betrayal and heartwarming passion that includes this author's triumphant series finale! It had me mesmerized and glued to each word on every single page that definitely swept me away. Yet the major scene stealer is the two stallaways Libby and Trix! It shows how two wee lassies try to save and rescue their favorite Aunt, yet win the hearts of all of the Wolf warriors too! One of the many reasons Heather McCollum has become one of my most favorite authors in the Scottish historical genre.
Reviewed for Wit and Sin
The sister of the infamous Sinclair Horsemen finally steps out of the shadows in Highland Surrender . I’ve been oh-so-hopeful that Heather McCollum would give Hannah Sinclair a chance to shine and she definitely does in this book.
Hannah is happy for her brothers and their wives and loves her nieces and nephews, but she’s lonely in the crowd. She wants a baby of her own but none of the men of her clan tempt her – not even the ones who may not be frightened of her legendary brothers. Enter silver trader Erik Halverson. The brawny Norseman is awfully fearsome for a supposed trader but Hannah isn’t going to let that stop her. She sets out to seduce him…only to find herself kidnapped.
Erik has been sent on a mission by Dowager Queen Sophie: he’s to kidnap Hannah and thus keep the Sinclair Horsemen under Sophie’s control. He doesn’t expect a strong and stubborn lass to fight back and knock him off his feet. Erik isn’t a bad person and his reason for doing Sophie’s bidding is understandable. He’s caught between a rock and a hard place and is trying to justify to himself why he’s doing something he knows is wrong.
The attraction between Erik and Hannah burns bright and hot and I liked how they went toe-to-toe with each other. Hannah has learned alongside each of her brothers and is just as brave and true as any of them. She’s Erik’s equal in every way and teaches him a thing or two along the way. If political machinations weren’t in their path, I imagine it would be mostly smooth sailing for this love story. But villains, politics, threats, and fears all make the road to happily ever after a rocky one for Hannah and Erik.
Highland Surrender is the fifth book in McCollum’s Sons of Sinclair series but you can jump in here if you haven’t read the others. There is a large supporting cast including Hannah’s brothers, sisters-in-law, a couple of mischievous children, and Erik’s brothers-in-arms who all have roles to play in the story. To her credit, McCollum never lets the supporting characters overshadow the main ones; not an easy feat with so many strong personalities. I liked all the different relationships and how each one shined and impacted the story.
Highland Surrender has passion, family drama, political intrigue, and romance. It’s an engaging story and a fitting end to the Sons of Sinclair series.
Disclaimer: I got an ARC but opinions are completely my own. But I hope nothing changes by the time it gets to print (October 24), because this is her best book in my opinion. I’ve read all her books and a fan but this one just feels different.
We have Hannah and Erik. Hannah is the sister of the Sinclair brothers who have the Four Horseman theme and are the Heroes on the other books in the series. This one though is all Hannah. Some of you on my friends list got a little turned off by the horseman stuff, so if that’s you - this book has them very secondary. The horseman stuff doesn’t come in much except to reference their reputation.
Hannah has been ignored or very protected - who could get close with her brothers? She has a plan for her life and things work out that she can actually meet Erik, the oh so not harmless Norse (I imagine Viking but he’s not but just go with it) visitor. Things ensue and his plan is to abduct her (this is on the cover blurb on Amazon so not a spoiler). Hannah being a Sinclair sibling is no simpering fool. She is written strong and with wit. She’s not made as a Mary Sue either. It fits in well with her arc in the series.
What’s really great about this story is the politics, history, and political intrigue. It is a big part but the romance is all there as well. This feels like a Monika Mccarty story in that sense and that is such a high comparison. Her other books haven’t felt this way but this one definitely had the skillful writing of the politics and history of the time but blended well with the growth between Erik and Hannah.
I’m torn on whether it can be stand alone. If you need it to be stand alone, you could. It’s a story on its own and just know you’ll run into references of the family.
Now for those of you who read the series, this is going to be a great treat to pick up on things. To keep this spoiler free, one brother really has some great emotional growth. There is one scene that really stuck out to me as powerful. When the brothers are saying something, Erik does something that challenges with words, with one it feels like a direct hit and very powerful. It was definitely a standout scene, for me, for the series that makes the one brother have to face some emotions he did in his book.
Of course angst and drama ensues and Erik has to do some inner searching. But both Hannah and Erik are written strong and it’s such a great end to the series.
So, if you’re a Heather McCollum reader, definitely read this great end to the series. If you want to give her a second chance, definitely check this out. If you haven’t heard of her, try this book!
I’ll be rereading this again for sure. Enjoy !
I’ve really enjoyed the Sons of Sinclair series, and I was so happy to see Hannah get her own story. Hannah is the sister of the fearsome Four Horseman, warriors who were the MMCs in the first four books of the series. Hannah loves her brothers and is so happy each has found love, but something is missing in her life. Surrounded by family but still feeling alone, Hannah wants a child of her own, and with no marital prospects in sight, she decides to take matters into her own hands.
When solver trader Erik Halverson arrives at her clan, Hannah decides to seduce him, but she is instead kidnapped, as Erik is not a trader but a warrior sent on a mission by the Dowager Queen. By holding Hannah, the Dowager Queen believes she can keep the Four Horseman under control. But the Dowager queen has severely underestimated Hannah and her family, and Erik has met his match.
The chemistry between Hannah and Erik is fiery, and their love story is filled with angst, danger, and sexual tension. At first, Hannah is furious when she realizes Erik and his men have kidnapped her. But when they encounter a storm, and they have to make repairs to their ship, Hannah learns a lot about Erik’s motivations and the impossible situation he is in. It definitely makes her more sympathetic to him, and she understands him more. They are such a great match! Both feel alone, both have suffered trauma in the past, and both are loyal and family-oriented. There is nothing these two won’t do for the ones they love.
I also loved that the main characters from the first four books had dominant roles in this story. There is so much love between the brothers and Hannah, and the way that they, their spouses, their children, Hannah, and many other members of the clan have grown so close is so lovely, especially after knowing of the trauma they experienced when they were younger. I also really love how the story highlights the strong bond between Hannah and Bas. They are such supportive and loving siblings, and they share a special connection. And when the family is all together, the teasing and banter are spot on, and seeing these fearsome warriors joking around and loving their family is so heart-warming.
I also love that the women take leadership roles throughout the story. The wives of The Four Horseman are fierce, especially when it comes to protecting their family. They go into total mama bear mode, and it is a delight to see. There are also two young stowaways that completely stole my (and many of the characters) heart. Libby and Trix are a delight, and though they have the best of intentions, they cause so much trouble. lol
Like the other books in the series, I inhaled Highland Surrender. It’s a fun, exciting, and romantic love story and a great conclusion to the series. Special thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
Erik started out as a bit of a villain in this book, and I worried that might make me dislike him, but he still showed himself to be honorable, and I liked that he saw Hannah for herself and not just as the sister of the horsemen. It was so satisfying to see Hannah come into her own and stand up for herself and her own wants and desires, as well as realizing her own worth, not just to her brothers/family but to her entire clan. The plot itself with Dowager Queen Sophie’s silly machinations seemed a bit thin and I wanted to see a bit more of the Horsemen and Erik’s men working together but I did like how things worked out in the end, and I appreciated Erik’s romantic gesture toward Hannah. I don’t think this one was as strong as the previous book, hence docking half a star, but I still enjoyed it and found it to be a satisfying series wrap-up.
Highland Surrender
Sons of Sinclair #5
Heather McCollum
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Norse warrior Erik Halverson knows that he has no choice but to follow the orders of the royal house of Denmark. He is one of the most elite fighters they have, and now him and his men must sail to Scotland, find the enemies' weakness, and then abduct her. The only mistake is that they have no idea that Hannah will not go without a fight.
Hannah Sinclair has learned to stand tall and defend herself. Her brothers are the four horsemen and you don’t mess with any of them. So when a big and handsome warrior tries to abduct her after pretending to be mere traders, she is ready to fight and make it as hard as possible while enjoying herself as well.
Now we have Norway's greatest warrior battling a Highland hellcat, that he just cant resist.
Then when war seems inevitable with the Sinclair brothers at the helm he will be forced to chose between duty and passion, and we all know only one will reign supreme.
Oh my goodness what a book. Heather McCollum is absolutely fabulous. This author is on fire. I loved Bas' story, but this might just have stolen my heart. I had so much fun reading this story and I'm actually sad to be done. I hope the author decides to write a story for Cait's girls because they are so animated and endearing. Hannah is a character I've loved from the beginning, but Erik well he is totally amazing. Put these two together and you have the ultimate power couple. Take my word you need to read this book. Ms. McCollum must have a little wand hidden because this is another magic story that you will adore as I did.
5 Stars! Heather McCollum did not disappoint with Hannah’s story! This is the 5th book in ‘The Sons of Sinclair’ series and can be read as a standalone but this is such a great series, I’d recommend reading all of it in order. I read book 2 first, then went back and read book 1, then books 3, 4 & 5 and loved every single one.
The main characters are Hannah Sinclair, sister to “the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse” and Erik Halverson, leader of the Wolf Warriors of Norway. I loved both of them and also loved getting updates on the past main characters and all the secondary characters, especially Trix & Libby. I laughed a few times at things they said and did. If you enjoy historical Scottish romance, you’d really enjoy this authors works. This book has lying, kidnapping, fighting, a few hot ‘sexy times’ scenes, brotherly love, with an HEA ending. I love how all the females in Heather McCollum’s books are strong women and not the weak damsels in distress. This is probably my absolute favorite series that I’ve ever read and I read a lot, so that’s saying something! I highly recommend this series! Trust me on this, you won’t be sorry!
Full of action and romance! I liked the fast paced plot of this series finale.
The first 4 books went through each Horseman finding his bride, it was finally sister Hannah's turn to find happiness.
Erik from Norway was sent on a mission from Sophie of Denmark with his Wolf Warriors to bring back Hannah in exchange for his sister. Of course this gets complicated when he and Hannah get close.
I liked Erik's character, but he seemed so conflicted and wishy washy sometimes. I just wanted him to fully stand up for his girl. At least him and Hannah got pretty steamy.
This could be read as a stand-alone, but it was helpful to have read the previous books because a lot of previous characters were in this one. It helps with understanding the deeper personalities of the characters, especially Bas.
I enjoyed this series and am hoping to enjoy the next!
I have thoroughly enjoyed the Sons of Sinclair series and I was super happy to see that their sister, Hannah, was also getting her own story. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop, the story captivated me fully. I've always said that Heather McCollum is one of my favourite authors and she's just proven why again.
When does being protected by your 4 brothers become TOO much? Hannah has finally had enough and at nearly 30 years of age, she's determined to find out what she's been missing in the love department and desperately wants a child of her own. When she meets Erik, she decides he's the one but doesn't find out until it's too late that he's not who she thought he was! I really loved Erik's character as well.
Hannah and Erik's story is filled with action, humour, romance, politics and intrigue and I really enjoyed how the author has done her homework where the history is concerned. It was fun to see Hannah's four brothers and their wives be part of this story as well. I must also mention Trix and Libby....oh my goodness, these two little girls were an absolute riot!!
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
With his family’s honour on the line, Norse warrior Erik Halverson has no choice but to follow the orders of the royal house of Denmark, even if he doesn't agree with them. From the moment her four brothers took control of their clan, Hannah Sinclair has learned to stand tall and defend herself. So when a big, brawny, and admittedly handsome warrior tries to abduct her, she isn’t about to give in.
The final book in the series & I’m so glad Hannah has had her story, as we've seen her grow & mature throughout the series. Another delicious book from the author, the characters have depth, the pace flows effortlessly, there’s sizzling chemistry, danger & humour. I loved Hannah but whilst I liked Erik I didn’t love him as he didn't put Hannah first. I loved Trix & Libby who added a lighter element.
Erik Halverson, leader of the Wolf Warriors of Norway, must save his sister. A prisoner of Queen Sophie, his mission is to bring Hannah Sinclair to the queen in exchange for his sister. Hannah is also a warrior and will not make it easy to be kidnapped. Erik must win her trust and the trust of her one brother. Once Hannah is kidnapped it's war. A very complicated plot with the only solution for a happy ending. Descriptive sex.
Very fine. Some nice moments and solid characters, but the end was convoluted and I don’t believe for a second that Erik would be content with life in a cottage in Scotland.
Highland Surrender grabbed my attention from its opening page, weaving an enthralling narrative that held me spellbound throughout. The story's captivating cast of characters, coupled with its scintillating romance, rendered it utterly irresistible, leaving me unable to put it down.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is the last book in the Sons of Sinclair series. I thought this was a pretty good finish to the story. I enjoyed the story and was glad that Hannah got her HEA. I would recommend reading the books in order but they were pretty well done.
Barbara’s rating: 4.3
Series: Sons of Sinclair #5
Publication Date: 10/24/23
Period:1536 - Elizabethan - Highlands
Number of Pages: 340
This was an absolutely perfect ending for the series and exactly the right man for Hannah Sinclair! We’ve watched Hannah through all of the book when her warrior brothers – known as the Horsemen – found their own HEAs. Those warrior brothers are overprotective of Hannah – to the point that she is almost thirty and has no prospects of finding a husband. How could she find a husband when all of the men are terrified of her brothers? So, she has resigned herself to never marrying, but you don’t have to have a husband to make a baby, and she is sure she’s found the right man for the job. He’s a visitor and will be long gone and unreachable before she knows whether she is with child. If he is gone, her brothers can’t kill him, and she’ll have the baby she wants so badly.
Erik Halverson, a Norseman, is a powerful warrior and leader of Wolf Warriors who protect his country’s border with Sweden. Except, here he is in Scotland, on a mission with which he doesn’t agree. However, as a loyal subject of his country, he’ll complete the mission. He has no choice because his beloved sister, his only surviving relative, is a hostage. His mission is to find the Sinclair sister and make sure she is the key to controlling the Sinclair brothers – if she means as much to them as his sister means to him. If she does, he’ll trade Hannah for his sister and his sovereign will be happy.
Hannah’s kidnapping goes smoothly, but Erik doesn’t count on Hannah’s warrior spirit nor the two stowaways, and especially not the storm that blows them well off course. Trapped on the Shetland Islands with a damaged ship, Hannah sees a different side of Erik and begins to think he might be more than a soulless kidnapper. Would he allow her to go free? How many times will he betray her?
There was a bit of wit and humor throughout the story and most of them involved the two little girls who stowed away, Libby and Trix. They are absolutely incorrigible and adorable. One of the best scenes, for me, is Hannah’s conversation with her sisters-in-law when she is trying to discover how seduction and intimacy work. You’ll love it.
This was an excellent, exciting, well-done story and I liked both Hannah and Erik very much. They both love their families and would do anything to save them – and they both prove that over and over. They are perfect for each other – especially since Erik is one of the few men in the world who could go toe-to-toe with her brothers. I had to keep wondering about Erik right up until the end – with so much betrayal, how could they ever truly find their HEA? Ah! But when they did finally get their HEA it was worth waiting for and it made for a wonderful end for the series.
You can surely read this book as a standalone and you’ll still love it. However, if you want to get the full effect of all of the characters and the backstories, you really should read the other books in the series as well. I only rated it down a bit because Erik took so long to get to where he should be. Even at the end, he was still willing to turn Hannah over – and I had trouble trying to figure out how a good and honorable man could ever think it was okay to kidnap one innocent woman to trade for another. To me, that made him as bad as those who were blackmailing him and I had to work to get over that. He was a cunning and powerful warrior, yet he couldn’t figure out another way to rescue his sister.
I hope you’ll love this story as much as I did should you decide to try it. HAPPY READING!
This fifth and presumably final Sinclair book is the story of the only Sinclair daughter, Hannah, and Norseman Erik. I only read the previous book (Bàs and Shana), and I really loved it, so I was looking forward to this one. However, it didn't quite hit the mark.
I liked Hannah well enough, and I didn't hate Erik as a character. As the male main character, however, meh. He too easily keeps key info from Hannah and lets her walk away too often. I suppose it was kind of tricky for the author, who has created four invincible Sinclair main male characters, to introduce another invincible male in Erik. Someone—or several someones—has to give in, and MMCs in successful historical Highland romances typically don't do that. That said, I found myself rooting solely for the Sinclairs.
One thing I either loved or hated—still trying to figure out which—is the decidedly campy way the Four Horsemen and the Wolf Warriors are portrayed. When reading Bàs' book I recall thinking the whole biblical ritual with the green horses and spooky Horsemen quotes was a little bit cheesy, especially as each brother had shed his mystery in favor of a wife and family. In this novel, the author seems to give the cheese a nod, tossing in banter among Erik and his men about needing a similar shtick (Yiddish mind). I truly appreciated this humor, though I wonder if it undermines the previous novels in some way.
Another thing I didn't fully love was the whole reason for Erik to kidnap Hannah. I didn't buy the whole Dowager-Queen Sophie bit at all—it seemed forced—and the Chancellor was character who didn't belong.
Fans of the series will be thrilled at how much page time the brothers and their wives get. For me, I only had Bàs' story being me, so I appreciated getting to know the other three men abs their wives better. The best characters by far, however, are Libby and Trix.
Okay, all that said, I'm still giving the book 3 stars. My enjoyment level was lower, I'm afraid, but in the greater scheme of things (i.e., the hundreds of books I've read this year), this book was well written and made a decent if not exciting read.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the publisher and Netgalley. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
Highland Surrender by Heather McCollum is a riveting Highlands’ tale of the sister of the four Sinclair brothers. They were the fiercest of Scottish warriors known as the Four Horsemen, and for them family was everything. Erik Halverson and his Wolf brothers were in Scotland to ascertain if Hannah was important enough to them, and if so, abduct her and take her to the throne of Sophie, Dowager-Queen of Denmark. Sophie had assured his compliance by holding his own sister, his only living family, until such time as he delivered Hannah. Sadly she made it easy for him as she had decided it was time she rid herself of her maidenhead and he was the man for the job. She wanted a child and there was only one way to get one. Plus he lived across the ocean so she wouldn’t need to bother with him. She was seducing; he was kidnapping. Her sisters of the heart, her brother’s wives anticipated her success and so did not notice she was gone immediately. Only one brother was at home but he followed immediately, with all the wives insisting they go, too, leaving only a message for his brothers.
Erik eventually tupped Hannah and it was the best thing that had ever happened to her. What he had done was treason as she was meant to marry a Danish chancellor, but he could’t resist. Erik was a good man. He hated what he was doing but his sister meant everything to him. When they rested along the way, he and his men helped the farmer they imposed upon, even capturing their tormentor, Patrick Stewart, son of the traitor Robert who the Four Horsemen had already delivered to the king. Erik didn’t know where his allegiance lay: his sister or Hannah, and by proxy, her brothers. But, they came up with a plan and were all allowed to leave Denmark. Dowager-Queen Sophie was not happy she’s been outsmarted and Erik was beyond broken to watch Hannah sail away. It was a good adventure and a decent romance. It is about men and women of honor who strive to flourish in a tremulous world. McCollum wrote a good book.
I had only read Bas' book (and loved it!) so I really wasn't sure, it could go either way. Y'all, I got sucked IN by this book, I could not put it down and tore through it in just a few days. Be advised there are a LOT of characters here to try to keep track of (4 brothers, each with a spouse and kids), but it absolutely could be read as a stand-alone.
This book was startlingly funny, I was not expecting as many laugh-out-loud moments as there were. The plot was perfectly bananas, just what I love in a romance novel. There is something new happening on almost literally every page, it's just one adventure to the next. The tension between these two was great and this is very much a) flirting/sexual tension to b) whoops turns out we're enemies to c) lovers with benefits to d) undying love, while also being achingly romantic. I laughed, I awed, I cried, I fanned myself.
These two are down bad for each other and the emotions just built out beautifully. Erik is my ideal hero: strong, tortured, stoic and swearing to never feel love again. Hannah is such a great heroine: she's 29 (gasp) and hellbent on getting a bairn sans husband. A sister of the 4 Horsemen warriors, she's practically a Viking herself and is quite a badass.
There is a lot of political intrigue going on, and I actually learned some things about Norway/Denmark/Scotland that I didn't know, so that was a plus! If lots of war talk and war strategizing puts you to sleep, just be advised there is a solid chunk of it in this book, but there is so much humor I really didn't get bored.
After reading this, I quickly got obsessed with Joshua so I'm going backwards to read his book because he is a standout funny character in this book.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the ebook in exchange for my honest review.
Time to surrender your heart!
What's a girl to do when her brothers are four of the most fearsome protectors ever to walk this earth? Hannah is near desperate to escape from her brothers' overbearing care and is willing to take nearly any risk necessary to pursue the Viking trader who is visiting the Sinclair castle.
Erik may look like a traveling trader, but he and his men have a secret mission, one that is laser-focused on the Sinclair daughter. Once Erik meets Hannah, his mission is both easier to accomplish and so much harder to complete.
I loved getting to know Hannah, her forthright confidence, and her fearless determination to take her destiny into her own hands. Erik is more than the hero she needs, even when it appears he's just the opposite. The unspoken connection between these two was palpable, especially when they're on opposite sides of the field of battle. The intricate plot beautifully knits together a fascinating story of royal intrigue, political allies, betrayal and the profound evidence of when trusting becomes inevitable.
The only thing that didn't quite sit right with me was the part of their HEA where Erik, after having been a high-ranking leader of men, is reduced to living with his wife's family, which is already filled with a surplus of warrior leaders, with seemingly no position left available for him to make use of his legendary skills. Not once throughout the book, even toward the peacemaking end, did Erik give even a hint of the impression that he'd be willing to be subject to the authority of one of Hannah's brothers. So the romance has a very solid HEA, but I wonder what their future looks like in the long run.
Still, the writing is absolutely perfect, instantly captivating, completely engulfing my heart and imagination. If you've read any of the early Sinclair books, you can't miss this one. If you haven't read them yet, you owe it to yourself to start at the beginning and treat yourself to one of the best Highlander series ever written. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
With his family’s honor on the line, Norse warrior Erik Halverson has no choice but to follow the orders of the royal house of Denmark. Now he must follow his destiny—and royal command—to sail to Scotland, find his enemy’s weakest link, and abduct her. Their mistake, of course, was thinking the Sinclair lass wouldn’t fight back.
From the moment her four brothers took control of their clan, Hannah Sinclair has learned to stand tall and defend herself. So when a big, brawny, and admittedly handsome warrior tries to abduct her, she isn’t about to give in. And the more he tries, the more she’s determined to make it as hard as possible...and enjoy it all the while.
Now Norway’s greatest warrior has a Highland hellcat on his hands, and Odin help him, he can’t resist her. But with the brutal Sinclair brothers coming after them, Erik is out of options. War is inevitable. And when a man is forced to choose between duty and passion, only one will win…
‘Highland Surrender’ is book 5 in the Sons of Sinclair series but can be read as a standalone.
There is a little dictionary for the foreign words used in the book.
The author has done a lot of research and uses this in the book to blend it with the story.
The pace is a bit slow; there are lots and lots of discussions about what to do next.
Libby and Trix are definitely the stars in this story; they are fierce, fearless and funny little girls:
“Once we are all together, nothing here will stop us from seeking revenge on you and your men.”
“Wolf Warriors,” Trix called. “The fiercest fighting men of Norway.”
“Then the Sinclair Horsemen seek revenge on the Wolf Warriors.” Bàs said the name of Erik’s army wryly as if the title lacked any weight. “Wolves eat horses,” Libby pointed out, nodding as she lifted onto her toes to lean over the water.
Highland Surrender is the fifth and final instalment of the Sons of Sinclair series by Heather McCollum. While the first four books focus on each Sinclair brother named for the four biblical horseman, this final book is centred around their beloved sister Hannah.
Hannah Sinclair has always been the quiet,shy sister of the Sinclair brothers. Always in the background taking on whatever role needs to be played for her Clans safety. While her brothers all found love and strong wives, Hannah has always been protected and never allowed to seek her own happiness.
While her brother’s are away on Kings business, Hannah decides to seduce the Norwegian silver trader that has recently landed on their shores. Little does she know, he is no silver trader and the Sinclair sister is what he is there for.
After Hannah is abducted by the fierce warrior she knows her brother’s will come for her in revenge. As Hannah and Erik spend the voyage to Denmark together, there is no hiding their attraction to each other.
Hannah and Erik need to devise a plan that will allow them to explore this new relationship among political powers threatening to destroy both of their families.
I really enjoyed Hannah and Erik’s story. This was a perfect ending to a series of epic love stories. This is a 4 star read for me. I highly recommend the entire series, I’ve done both audio and physical book and loved them both. The series does not need to be read in order but you do see all other characters throughout each of the books. Excellent storytelling and family threading throughout the series.
Highland Surrender by Heather McCollum
Sons of Sinclair #5
As worthy of being a son as her brothers, Hannah Sinclair is up to conclude the series and will find her happily ever after with a Norwegian Wolf Warrior who stops in on a mission for his queen.
What I liked:
* Hannah: intelligent, capable, protected by her brothers, skilled in several lethal talents, acted as a mother figure to her youngest brother, ready to stretch her wings and achieve one of her main life goals
* Erik: warrior, leader of men, loving brother, strong, wise, won’t deviate from the quest his queen sent him on because if he does…someone he loves will suffer
* That Hannah knows what she wants and is willing to reach out for it
* Erik’s backstory and why he is so committed to the current task though he begins to question whether or not it is “right”
* Catching up with the Four Horsemen, their wives, and families
* Trix and Libby: two young girls adopted into the family who add interest at times and are always willing to “save” someone they feel needs saving
* The plot, pacing, setting, characters, and conclusion
* Wondering if there will be a spinoff series that includes Osk, Niall, Sten…or if the author is thinking of something else entirely
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how difficult it must have been for those without power when those in power chose to run roughshod over them, take what they owned, and harm them and their families
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes
