Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers by Chris Grabenstein and narrated by a whole cast of performers is very entertaining and enjoyable for a kids book. Riley is hated by the sheriff and his mom's boss, each one a crook. There are lots of crooks in this town and Riley and his gang always find a way to serve up justice with clever and ingenious plans, and usually with the help of one adult too. They don't do anything to illegal ( sort of) and it is only fiction.
Great narration too!

This one didn’t quite do it for me. It might be a generational thing: My kids love “Gravity Falls” but it’s too … something for me. This story felt similar in many ways. It’s so unrealistic, I had to imagine it as a cartoon.

Riley Mack and his crew are sort of vigilantes, and they solve crime in the most outlandish, difficult, and over-the-top way.

The sheriff is a crook, which is fine for a story, but I do wonder if that sends the wrong message to young kids. If they are in serious danger, they need to know it’s okay to tell someone in authority.

Audio production is full cast with sound effects and funky music.

The version I am actually reviewing is the Audible Originals one. It is not listed in the editions available. I chose the version I hope matches.

I chose this title as part of the Audible Original program. I debated getting it as I’m not a child. Okay, some who know me might argue that so, I’m way above the age of being considered a child. I was kept entertained the entire time. I can’t wait to share this with my grandchildren. I know they are going to love it! The actors did a great job bringing this book to life. This would be a wonderful title for a road trip.

The grandchildren mentioned are in range from 6 to 12. I think the two older ones are more suited for the book but, being the audiobook version, I believe even the youngest will be kept entertained. The Audible Originals version runs just over 4 hours and has a big cast. I think even the adults in the car will be entertained. It will also provide an opening for talking about bullying. Oh and there are dogs. What child hasn’t asked for a dog at least once?

These troublemakers make trouble for bullies, thieves, and other bad guys. Best of all, they shut down a puppy mill.

This is a case where the audiobook is even better than the original book. The book is funny; the audiobook, with its excellent full cast and vivid sound effects, is hilarious. Riley and his troublemakers are likable characters, and the bad guys are over-the-top villainous and not too bright. And there are dogs, lots of dogs.

Recommended for all ages, and for anyone who enjoys laughing out loud all the way through a story.

My daughter and I enjoyed this fun audiobook while we were traveling to the beach. It was adventurous and busy enough to hold her attention and smart enough to engage mine.
For me, the mark of a great middle-grade book is this: "Mommy, when can we listen to the rest of Riley Mack?!" Bingo. You win.

I listened to the audiobook as an Audible Original. I really enjoyed it for what it is. It was well acted and presented. I liked seeing the story building up and different parts of the story come together at the end. The cast of characters is very standard for a children's book, the main character, the silly sidekick, the girl, the nerd and so on. I would get this book for my little cousins any day.

From mystery critic Lesa Holstine

"Chris Grabenstein's Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers is a fun romp. It's funny and filled with great characters. The villains are truly nasty and a little stupid. The group of heroes are appealing characters. Chris Grabenstein has been one of favorite authors since I read his first John Ceepak mystery. He continues to win my loyalty with every book. Now, he's added one of my favorite sub-genres to his repertoire, the comic crime caper. Share this book with a kid you love. But, do yourself a favor. If you enjoy a comic adventure, read it for yourself."

This was a fun book. The kids are smart and love their parents. They fight a dirty cop, but with the support of a father who is in the military. I can't think of many books where the dad is active duty and the mom and son are happy together at home. My favorite character was Jamal with his extensive vocabulary.

Love the author, but this is a very YA novel - think Encyclopedia Brown plus the Hardy Boys, maybe, but with Chris’ humor. Glad I read it, but I probably won’t go on with the series.

This was a free Audible Original that I found in my library. I was looking for something lighthearted last weekend, and sadly the events of the past week made my choice seem all the wiser.

I assume this audio play was written for children, I'd guess children in the 4th-8th grade range. I thought it had pretty much everything you could want in a children's book:

- exciting capers designed to foil evildoers
- laugh-out-loud humor (really, someone my age shouldn't be laughing at a fart machine, but it was pretty awesome)
- for the parents, a dictionary-memorizing 6th grader to painlessly introduce a series of vocabulary words.

Well written, well acted (by quite a large cast), definitely worth the time!

Riley Mack is the first book by Chris Grabenstein that I have pick up outside of the Mr. Lemoncello's Library Series. This audible original is read by a full cast and has background noise as well. Each character is read by a different voice actor/ess.

The book is the first in a series, and it follows a boy named Riley Mack. He and his gang of friends help their friends and family solve mysteries and crimes in their small town. The story was fun and all of the different plot elements kept me guessing. There are a bunch of smaller side stories that all come together in the end and it added a lot of depth to the story.

Riley, the main character, just wants to do good, but the town cop has it out for him, much like the cop's son has it out for all the 6th graders. Riley tends to get wrapped up in trouble as he tries to help the people around it am it lends to some hilarious mishaps and trouble for him and his friends.

An aspect that I really liked about the story was that one of the kids always uses great vocabulary words and then defines them for the reader, and he does it quickly and it is part of his quirky personality so it fits really well into the story - so well in fact I didn't even realize I was learning definitions until I had to stop and really think about it. A great learning tool that is obvious but not so.

I enjoyed this book, but the full cast thing kind of threw me off again. I listened to an adult book that I gave up on that was similarly done. I think it is a fun way to voice all the characters but I feel like presenting it this way also takes a bit away from the character development that I like in most books.

This book was fun and very short, so I think reluctant readers will like it, however since I really love the Mr. Lemoncello's Library series, this one fell a bit short for me in comparison.

I haven't read a middle grade book in years and I probably wouldn't have until I was asked to review Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers . The title alone got my attention and I'm sure will be even more appealing to the age group it's meant for. I also like the cover, actually that goes for most middle grade books they have no problems keeping book covers original.

Now on to the actual book, I found myself laughing within the first few pages. Tons of smart come backs, funny phrases and innocent fun. Riley Mack and his crew are a great set of characters all with their own individual personalities that Grabenstein really made shine through. Riley and his friends are a group of kids I would have loved to grow up with. They are all about doing what is right, standing up to the bullies and the younger kids really looked up to them.

As far as the bad guys you had your bully, bank robbers, a grandma who ran a puppy mill, a banker with a gambling problem and Police Chief Brown who was one crooked cop. Hopefully there is a book two to this series in which Chief Brown gets what he deserves also.

Overall I had a blast reading this with tons of laugh out loud moments. If you have kids who are between ages 8-12 or if you are still a kid at heart and enjoy a good fast paced middle grade book with mystery and it's share of comedy I highly recommend Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers.

Okay, that was really funny and fun. I hadn't the least clue what to expect when I got this from Audible's monthly freebie options, but it was very enjoyable. Basically, this book is a series of mini stories where Riley Mack and his friends (a.k.a. The Other Known Troublemakers) solve mysteries that each build on the one before it. We start with a case involving basic bullying and end with bank embezzlement.

I liked Riley as the lead character. His history is that he used to be a trouble making kid who got caught shoplifting once, but then his military father convinced him to use his smarts for helping people, especially defending the defenseless, instead. And Riley goes about doing so with much dedication and vigor, no matter the odds. His friends, a rag-tag mix of kids boy and girl, big and small, black and white, help him in doing good. They are all smart kids in their own, unique ways, and work well as a team, employing each kid's special skills to solve the problem at hand.

This story has a humorous tone throughout even when dealing with serious-ish topics like puppy mills and bank robbing, which allows it to touch on such topics in a way that informs readers as what these things are and that the things are bad without making them so heavy that they become inappropriate for the target age range. The various villains don't have any questionable gray areas. They are clearly bad but shown to be so in a goofy rather than scary way, adding to the humor. Though they challenge the main characters, each progressively more than the last, they are all ultimately defeated.

Overall, aside from some minor cautions which I'll cover in the content section, I felt this book was plenty appropriate for the target age range of Middle School age kids and will make them and their parents smile. It certainly made me smile.

As a side note, the audio version of this book that I listened to was EXTREMELY well produced. It had a full cast of voice-over talent, sound effects, music, everything. I enjoyed the experience very much.

Content Advisory:

Violence:

What little violence is present remains slapstick and is mostly the bad guys getting defeated. It's never get intense or icky.

An instance of bullying includes a kid having his head shoved inside a freezer (he's rescued in a humorous manner and unharmed, but his tongue does get frozen to some ice.). The bully is shown to be from a home where his father and grandmother don't exactly have great moral standards, either. The same bully later steals a dog.

Authority figures:

This story has a somewhat even mixture of adult who are good and who are bad. Riley and his parents have an especially trusting and loving relationship. Riley turns to them both for help and advice multiple times and returns the favor my helping his mom out of a sticky situation at least once. Though his father is active in the military and not always able to be physically present, Riley video chats with him regularly and clearly admires him. Both parents are honest, hard working people with solid moral standards.

Riley's friend Brianna's mom is basically a hippie. Her name is Moonbeam and there is a scene where the kids stop briefly at Brianna's house and Moonbeam tells the kids to listen to the crickets and absorb their wisdom. A brief reference to the stars being aligned is in this scene. When the kids leave, Brianna apologizes for her mom's strangeness but the kids acknowledge that all their parents are weird in their own way and there's no need to be embarrassed.

The kids have a faithful friend in a 20-something news reporter who is trustworthy, honest, and enjoys using her reports to help defeat corruption and other crime.

The town's chief of police is unreliable because he always believes his son (who happens to be the town bully) over the kids being bullied and is later shown to be corrupt and complicit in multiple crimes. The mother of the chief of police is shown to be a mean and gross person, and owner of a puppy mill. Her son and grandson are aware of all her crimes, but do nothing. Sometimes they even participate in them.

A bank manager commits embezzlement and frames an employee for it. He is condescending toward Riley and friends and does what he can to thwart their investigation efforts, partially by making reference to their past wrongs to make them seem untrustworthy. There is also a scene where he is shown gambling in Las Vegas in order to get enough money to help fund an illegal activity. (He lies about why he was away from the bank that day by saying he had a cold and then pretends to be sick when he actually isn't.)

Related: Kids lie to the untrustworthy adults and other kids multiple times. One girl imitates multiple people, including a police officer, cheerleader, and radio show host, among other things, in order to deceive people for the sake of solving the mystery of the day.

Drugs/alcohol:

The kids witness one nasty character spitting brown liquid multiple times and realize she's chewing tobacco. (This is portrayed as really gross.)

The bank manager gets drunk while in Las Vegas.

Language:

No real swearwords used, only swear replacements. These include: Cr*ptacular, cr*p on a cracker, wakadoodle, what the h*ck, "what the double h*ck"

Don't know whether to scratch my watch or wind my butt

Other:

Middle school humor including a couple brief references to poop and a bully being portrayed as gross because he spends his evenings scratching between his toes and sniffing his nails. (His grandmother is said to do the same thing.)

A couple fart-centric gags, including the story opening on a scene where one of the boys keeps getting texts and his notification tone sounds like farts

Brief description of a puppy mill where dogs are sick and starving and kept in cages with mesh bottoms so the poop can fall through to the mud.

Book title: Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers. Book author: Chris Grabenstein.
The main character is Riley Mack . He is important to the story he is clever, really funny, and very brave.
Mongo and Brianna help Riley Mack with different situations. The main conflict for Riley Mack is his mother has been accused for stealing thousands of dollars, but actually her boss stole the money and blamed it on her. So know Riley Mack has to prove his mother is innocent. The theme of the story is being brave and sticking for what's right. Riley has to face different challenges like, proving his mom innocents by braking into a bank. I would recommended this book to people who like action like, kids trying to stop bank robbers by using dogs

Okay yes, this is a middle school book and some of the things that happen are somewhat silly and unbelievable. But it was an enjoyable adventure and I very much enjoyed the audio production. The Opera scene was both ridiculous and hilarious and the ending was very satisfying. I think a lot of late elementary/early middle schoolers would enjoy this book. I may have to read some more books from this author.

I got this story for free as part of my Audible subscription (I know, I hate amazon, but then again I'm on goodreads as well right?), and I was hesitant about it. I didn't know anything about Chris Grabenstein (and honestly I probably would have thought less of it had I known he'd partnered with James Patterson, but that's a blog for another time) and I thought this was going to be just a cheap, low produced audio book.
I was blown away. First of all, the production value was spectacular. I was uncertain about how big the cast was (though a big cast should have told me there was some money behind it), but they did a spectacular job. It's actually performed like a play, with sound effects and everything.
Then on to the writing. It is actually really sound. The story is hokey (but come on, it's about a genius twelve year old solving crimes), but the characters are deep and the story complex.

I was really blown away. I couldn't even stop listening to it. Highly recommend!

You have to read this as a children's book, one where the adults are kind of inept and the clever kids save the day. With that frame, this is a delightful book. It's got bank robbers being stopped, animals being rescued, and bullies getting tricked. It's everything a child would find exciting and fun. And I "read" this as a full audio drama, with sound effects, multiple actors and even music. I'll share this with my kids for sure.

Riley Mack and the Other Known Troublemakers I had obtained this book from Audible Originals and I know and like the author. I have read a few of his books and thought this would be just as fun as other books. Riley Mack and his friends work to help other children being bullied by the sheriff's son. His father is away on military business and he is only able to talk with his father when he is not working. Because of this, he has had some issues when it first happened. His mother works at the local bank and her boss steals from her drawer every chance he gets so that he can go and gamble away the money. He calls it his retirement plan. On top of all this, someone has stolen the puppy that his one friend's family had just acquired. When they start their own investigation the find things that are shocking in their small town.

I feel that this book might be the beginning of another kid's series by Chris Grabenstein.

Fun story written for 8-12-year-olds that will capture their imagination and fill them will giggles. I think boys, in particular, will enjoy the silliness that Riley Mack and his cohorts get into as they seek to defend the underdogs.

This was a free audible original and is probably geared best toward early middle school kiddos or even younger. But I loved it! It's performed with a whole cast, and the sound effects, etc. had me laughing out loud. If you have kids in that age range, I highly recommend you listen to this on your next road trip!! Super cute and well performed!!💕

4 stars - Audible - Creative story about a middle-school detective and friends, who solve a number of intertwined crimes. I smiled a lot, wishing Riley Mack was around when my boys were young. Lots of fun - and the background music was fun too!
