About 3rd grade or so. Graphic novel.

I didn't think this was quite as interesting as the first book in the Fangbone series, but most young boys will like it. Smelly feet, burping, and armpits all figure in the narrative with smelly feet saving the day. The story--a dragon's egg gets sent from Skullbania to Earth and Fangbone is supposed to nurture it so it will hatch. His 3rd grade classmates help him keep the egg warm and keep the egg from the dreaded Drool who wants to steal it as part of his plan to conquer Skullbania. Slapstick humor. Outright funny when Fangbone tries to understand American culture such as going to the supermarket to look for a bargain. "We shall hunt the wicked bargain...and we will return victorious! We shall make this horrid bargain wish it had not been born! It will weep at our feet and beg the gods for mercy."

It's probably better to read the first book first to set up the characters and basic plot. Not essential, but better.

Another Fangbone winner. I hope that Rex keeps writing these so I can keep reading and recommending them.

"Bill the Beast, are you ill?"

"Your feet . . . smell . . . sooooo bad . . . "

"Yes! They are fragrant and bold. They reek of a life filled with triumphant battles!

"There once was a great warrior named Stinkpit the Musty. He did not use a sword or ax or club to defeat his enemies. He simply had to raise his arm, and enemies fell.

"Finally, Stinkpit met an army that his Pits alone could not overcome. For the first time in nineteen winters, Stinkpit removed his boots. The smell was so powerful, it burned the armor and clothes off the entire army . . . and made them cry like babies! The stench turned the forest into desert and the rocks into lava! The army, now called the Weeping Naked of the Burning Armpit Badlands, aimlessly roamed the desert forevermore."

2.5⭐

The second installment of Fangbone, read for a graphic novel alphabet challenge (I was not a big fan of this series, to begin with). Kind of chaotic, kind of funny, kind of cringe, kind of wholesome. Not really my thing, though.

😍 The good:
This was a very fast read and the graphics were quite fun to look at. The story has both entertaining and thoughtful elements for the age group.

😅 The not-so-good:
The colour palette is not my cup of tea. There is not much of a well-developed plot or characters and some parts try to be funny, but don't really succeed for me. Maybe I'm really not in the right age group for it anymore.

I enjoyed this even more than volume 1. It’s a combination of adorable and disgusting, which is perfect for middle grade boys—and I love how friendship is emphasized. My son gets so excited to read these that by the time I sit down with him, he has already looked through the whole thing himself, and I have to remind him not to give me spoilers!

The Rollicking Adventure Continues

This is the second book in the Fangbone series and while it tells a complete stand alone story it would really be best, I think, to read the first book first. The first book sets up the whole premise of the adventure and establishes all of the characters, and this second book takes off with a bang right from the point at which book one ended. The author makes an honest attempt to bring new readers up to speed, but you will miss a lot, (about Billy, Fangbone, Class 3G, Skullvania, Venomous Drool, and so on), if you start here.

Short Version Summary: Young Fangbone has been thrust into our world, tasked with safeguarding a relic that will keep a terrible evil, (the "Venomous Drool"), from arising on his home world. He decides to hide out in an elementary school and is immediately and unquestioningly befriended by Bill, who takes it upon himself to introduce this foreign "student" to the mysteries of third grade. Some of the Fangbone-out-of-water business is silly fun, but all around it the author has embroidered some very sly and knowing humor. The first book addressed ADD, special needs classes, bullies, obtuse adults, and the loneliness of the outsider kid, without once ever making it a big deal, and this book builds on that with an emphasis on friendship, cooperation and resourcefulness.

That said, there is a lot of rousing action and some very funny set pieces. But this is not a message book or an after school special. It has some pretty sly humor, (Fangbone's first visit to a supermarket is clever and funny), and it runs from broad slapstick to pretty subtle. On the adventure side, this is a terrific, generous, and big-hearted book in which every kid character gets to be a hero in his own way. What a rewarding treat.

Please note that I found this book while browsing the local library's Kindle books, and downloaded it for free. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

This is the second book in the Fangbone series featuring a time-traveling eight-year-old barbarian. The narrative is humorous - in a snarky, deadpan way - and will certainly appeal to the target audience (as well as many adults), but the hilarious illustrations are the highlight of the story.

We all read this book independently, and it's a fun, fast read. We are all looking forward to reading the next book in the series, The Birthday Party of Dread.

Class 3G gets a new challenge - to present a skit for the extinction pageant. Fangbone gets a new directive to hatch an egg so that he will have a dragon to help him guard the toe of Drool. But all is not as it seems.
I love the way the whole class is coming together to support one another and the new weird kid - Fangbone - by helping him "sit" his egg. Bill is showing skills in becoming class leader of the Dodo project and the go-to guy for attack strategies against evil monsters.
A super fun read.

Volume two continues the humor, action, and grossness (smelly feet play a big part in the story) of the first volume as Fangbone and his third grade friends must continue defending the Toe from the evil Venomous Drool. I love the parts where Fangbone is trying to figure out this new world, such as when he meets his friend Bill's pet cat for the first time and wonders what it is for ("Her purpose is to be cute." Bill explains.) I think young readers will really enjoy this series!

Book #2 has Fangbone once again fighting monsters & struggling to understand the crazy new world he finds himself in. Added is an egg sent to him from his time which he thinks he's been selected to care for & hatch to defeat the bad guys. However, all is not as it seems & things go from bad to worse when a crazy feathered bird hatches & tries to kill him. More hijinks ensue before Fangbone & his crew save the day.

Another one of those kids' books that is SO kiddish that I couldn't get into it. These are really tough to review: I recognize that their true audience will find them brilliant and funny, but...I don't know. I felt left out. I admire the author for being able to plug directly into that age level, but I can't say I enjoyed it more than three stars' worth.

The second Fangbone book, and it was about as good as the first. Entertaining, light humor. You can read this book without having read the first and not miss any of the storyline. This time the student of 3G prepare to put on a play, while also having to deal with keeping a dragon's egg warm until it hatches. Cute and fun, even though I don't much like the sepia-style coloring.

The third grader in me giggles at the very mention of Fangbone's name. These books are a RIOT, and Book 2 successfully lives up to the promises of Book 1. Hooray for Fangbone! Reluctant (and avid) readers everywhere rejoice.

Multiculturalism goes bezerk when third graders have to deal with Dung Trolls (One touch and you will be doomed! Puss-filled boils will cover your body and your tongue will grow hair!) and a three-foot barbarian has to survive...the school pageant!!

Fangbone is a natural leader. He also has really smelly feet, which come in handy when he's fighting off dung trolls. Hand sanitizer works just as well for Bill.
