Break Away

Rate this book
Ice Queen. That's what everyone calls Dafne at school. The girl with the striking looks of a Raven Princess but whose cold-steeled touch freezes everyone in her way. Her reputation works for her and she even likes it. People don't mess with her—except for her sister's infuriatingly handsome boyfriend, Ian, who loves pushing her subzero temper to its limits.

Life in Berryford is flowing exactly as she wants it—no drama, no boy trying to get into her pants—until she starts noticing odd, glazed-eyed students everywhere. Something weird is happening and, unusual enough for her, she needs to find out why. But when people start falling into a coma with no reason, among them Dafne's sister, she decides to take the matter in her hands, because if her intuition is right, this isn't something doctors or virologists can fight. This is something…more.

With frustration and guilt leading her way, and Ian forcing himself to her side, Dafne will step onto a road that'll open her eyes to why ignorance is bliss, why hate is so close to love, and why our imagination might be the most dangerous weapon ever known.

Good news for everyone: there are no vampires, no werewolves, no mermaids, no fairies, no shifters, no zombies, and no fallen angels. Cool, right?

Once again, Tatiana Vila has blown me away! I love this book! It offers up new and unexplored (for me at least) territory. This book grabs you from the beginning and whisks you breathlessly all the way to the end. This is a read that you will have a hard time putting down. The characters are fully developed and so lovable. Tatiana Vila is definitely one of my new favorite authors. Between reading Break Away and The Ylem, I will be waiting with baited breath for the next books of both of these! Thank you Tatiana, once again, for a fabulous read!

Break Away (Away #1) by Tatiana Vila

Tatiana Vila writing is good her words flowed well and I found it pretty easy to read. The character descriptions in this book were good and you really got to know everyone in the story. The humour was excellent and I laughed at the Dafne’s sarcasm.

Dafne the main character in this story is known as the Ice Queen to everyone in town and most people stay far away from her as she does have a temper. Losing both of her parents has hardened Dafne and there is no one she cares in this world more than her twin sister Buffy. Now Buffy’s boyfriend is another story; Ian loves to push Dafne’s buttons and they spend all their time arguing and I think right here you know there is something more going on here. During school Dafne notices changes in her classmates, they seem to be walking around in a trance like state and their eyes are glazed over. Now people are falling into comas and not till Buffy is affect by this does Dafne know in her gut that something is not right. Dafne and Ian will team up to figure out what is happening to everyone and how can an unknown virus be the cause of this.

Dafne has to use all her inner strength to fight this battle and knows she has to open herself up. And we do get to see Dafne become a better person.

The paranormal part of this book is unique and I did enjoy it the idea behind it. I rated the book 3 stars because I did enjoy parts of the story and I may continue on with the next book in this series just to catch up with Dafne and Ian.

I read this book as part of read2review with PNR&UF Fanatics group. Thanks to Tatiana and the moderators for this chance to read this book!

I really enjoyed this book. It was completely original. I don't think I have heard of anything like this world which is really great. The reason I am giving this four stars instead of five is because I liked the Ylem better. There was just something about this book that I didn't connect with.

I wish more time had been spent in describing how the human world related to the other world that is in this story. I'm sure this will probably be addressed in later books in this series, but I wished we had seen more of it here. That is really my only complaint.

Once again Tatiana Vila created a story that held my interest the entire way through. She is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.

I recieved this book as a part of the Read 2 Review program.

Where I liked this authors other book, the Ylem, I didn't like this book very much. It wasn't a bad book and the things I didn't like were more personal and may not bother other readers. The characters were well developed ad the story was original, but something bugged me. First let me say the the book moved entirely too slow for me. I found myself skimming which isnt a good sign, then I would have to go back and re-read when I realized I missed something. But mostly I didn't like his one because, . It's late for me, so I will revise this review tomorrow when I've had time to think about it more.

This story is about 17-year old Dafne. She and her sister, Buffy, are still coping (or not coping, in the case of Dafne) with the loss of their parents. More often than not, they seem to take their pain out on each other. Dafne has earned herself the title of ‘Ice Queen’ at school thanks to her closed-off attitude and the air of bitchiness she's adopted.

A few people can see through Dafne's façade though, one of them being her sister's boyfriend, Ian. Ian and Dafne are practically at each others throats on several occasions throughout the book - but there is definitely some secret reasoning behind this, and it's not entirely clear to either of them what that reasoning is.

Dafne's whirlwind feelings are soon pushed to the back-burner though, because something is going on. Dafne begins to notice something odd going on at school. Large numbers of students sit around reading books in these strange trance-like states. People all over the place are dropping into comas seemingly at random, and without explanation. Dafne feels in her gut that these two things are connected somehow. Finally, the disaster strikes home and Buffy falls into a coma. Now, Dafne & Ian have to find a way to save her - and trust me, the solution is nothing you'd ever imagine.

Okay, let me get what I didn't like out of the way first.

I feel incredibly nitpicky by even mentioning this, because I didn't see anyone else mention it when I scanned over some of the other reviews for this book, BUT it bothered me to no end so I have to mention it.

Some of the sentences were backwards. I had to re-read a sentence about every 30 pages because it was like this. I'll give one example:

Dafne is talking to her grandmother about apple trees, and in the conversation Dafne says: “Oh, and you could make more often those German apple kutchens and banana breads. It's perfect.” - to me it sounds SO OFF. Sentences like this were all over the place and I was so insanely irritated by it because it slowed me down due to the fact that I had to read the sentences again and again.

The other thing that I didn't like was the pace of the plot. I didn't really get into it until around 50% of the way through. It really picked up then, and I couldn't stop reading. It was super hard for me to get up to that point though. There just wasn't enough going on. It was mostly banter, banter, banter. Argue, argue, argue some more. Bitch, moan, complain.

I enjoyed the characters A LOT, but I think Dafne was hard to like. She was a bitch, first of all.. and even self-proclaims it so. She is SO MEAN to her twin. It was way too easy for her to do this, and I don't feel like she felt enough guilt over it happening.

Buffy was much more likable than Dafne, and I liked Ian. I found him to be quite swoon-worthy! :) Even after all of the mean things Dafne said to him, he still wanted to be there for her and help her with the task she was about to undertake.

The paranormal aspect of this book is so unique! I haven't read anything like it before, and I want more! I am so sad that we didn't get to spend more time in the dream-world Tatiana has built in this book. It's by far the most interesting thing about this story. I am so anxious to read the second book because I'd love to know more about this place & the characters that were introduced there. They were intriguing and again, unique. More please!!

You definitely want to read this book if you need a break from the usual vampires, werewolves, angels, & fae. I'll definitely be reading some more by Tatiana Vila.

This was an extremely entertaining read. I absolutely adored Dafne and her sarcastic and biting humor. After her parents’ death, she’d put a wall around herself, using sarcasm and bad attitude as a shield to not get close to anyone. However, Dafne can be nice if she tried, and we learn that she wasn’t always like this. Sure enough, she does become only kind of nicer later.

While the book was very entertaining, the plot kind of fell flat. The first half was way too long before the dream thing started happening en masse. The good part is that you really get to know the characters and their relationship with one another. The only thing that pulled me through were the writing, which was very well done and the humor. Ms. Vila had a way with words that kept me hooked, even while I kept waiting for things to happen.

Also, it would be nice to know what’s so special about Dafne that she just knew the coma wasn’t some virus. What made her so special? The ending also felt really rushed. Where was the conflict? Yeah, people fell comatose, but it was way too easy. All Dafne had to do was go and rescue Buffy, but there were no obstacles really, no danger, so there was no satisfaction from reading that the heroine actually survived some conflict.

Other than that, I really hope Dafne and Ian get together, but I also really like Buffy, so I don’t want that to happen to her. However, the fact that Dafne was ready to jump some other guy’s bones a few pages after what happened with Ian was kind of a turn off. For the first half of the book, she sounded like a judgmental prude, but she was perfectly fine with idea of hooking up, so she’s kind of hypocrite.

Overall, a very interesting idea, with the dreams. However, I did get tired of criticizing humans wastefulness and boring life and blah blah blah. It feels like every book I read recently had some say on human behavior, but that’s really just my mood and my personal preference, not the books fault!

This is the first book in Tatiana Vila's Away series. It's a paranormal book without the usual paranormal creatures. The story is about a 17 year old girl named Dafne, who has been deeply hurting since the loss of her parents. When her sister is one of several people who have fallen into a coma for no known reason, Dafne has a gut feeling that it is more than a virus that is to blame. One interesting question arises in this story – Where do you go when you dream?

I have to admit that I had a little trouble getting into this book during the first half, though I can't put my finger on exactly why. I guess I didn't really like Dafne's attitude so I had trouble connecting with her. I feel that I connect more with a character when they have qualities that are similar to mine. Dafne grew on me during the second half of the book, and we found out why she has this major attitude problem with Ian – her sisters boyfriend.

The second half of the book involved some sexual tension and some heavy kissing, and that's always a good thing in my opinion. Also during the second half, we meet Comus. He's definitely a character that keeps things interesting. The paranormal qualities toward the end caught my interest as well. If I gave half star ratings, I would give this 3.5 stars. I think teens and young adults would really like this. If you're looking for something a little different from the norm, I would give this a try.

I can't put my finger on it, but I liked this book. It wasn't earth shattering or anything, but the paranormal concept was interesting. I also found myself really hoping things would happen between Ian and Dafne even though her sister is nice and doesn't deserve that... I just wanted it... Oh, and I wanted some action between Dafne and Andras... Yah, I wanted her to have both.. So not normal of me.

Another note, this author is pretty good with original creativity concerning the paranormal IMO. I've read both books this author has published, and even though I still don't know what a Ylem is, I feel both series are unique. That's the kind of paranormal I want.

Dafne is content with her reputation as the Ice Queen, and most people in the town of Berryford have learned to keep their distance. The unfortunate exception is her twin sister Buffy’s infuriating boyfriend, Ian, who insists on pushing Dafne’s temper to its limits. Even with this irritation, her life is continuing in a comfortably predictable pattern, until she starts noticing many of her fellow high school students developing a glassy-eyed stare. When scores of people start dropping into comas with no discernable cause, Dafne feels in her gut these events are somehow connected to the students’ strange behavior and that something more than a freak outbreak is to blame. After Buffy succumbs to the coma, Dafne must battle her own demons and force herself into an uneasy truce with Ian so they can work together to save her sister. Faced with compromising and guilt-ridden situations, Dafne must embrace the unexplainable and open her mind to the paranormal in a race against time to save one of the few people she actually cares about – before it’s too late.

Vila’s story makes a compelling proposition – that there is a defined bond between creative works and the need for humans to use these works to journey away from our everyday lives to dream-like states of wonder. Break Away asks the reader to consider what might happen if we fervently held onto these travels away from our humdrum lives and were able to live in our imaginary fantasies – how (and indeed why) would we ever come back? I found this a fascinating proposal and particularly enjoyed Vila’s skirting the boundaries of appropriate relationships by highlighting the tension between Dafne and Ian. It is easy to see how some of these relationships would play out in real life and for the reader to see herself in Dafne – however much she might not want to.

My biggest challenge with this novel is one that I see often in self-published works – the need for a professional editing eye. I found myself distracted by the frequent grammatical errors and awkwardly worded sentences, and some of the literary gems were almost lost. The exquisite wordplay and delicious descriptions in the narrative deserve utmost care so they are not overshadowed by grammatical mistakes. Vila certainly has talent and more comprehensive editing will help her bring that talent to the forefront.

Break Away story is compelling and engaging and worth a read for any lovers of young adult fiction. I’m excited to see what Vila has to offer in the future.

Break Away by Tatiana Vila was a fantastic read from Read 2 Review. I found this book to be a refreshing read from what I have been reading in the past couple of months. While the story unfolds in a quick reading manner, the answers to questions within unfold in a juicy delicious slow way. Far from being annoying and an overused mechanism it is delightful. The plot was extremely fast paced and unwrapped in entertaining way. The characters were completely interesting filled with sharp and at times snarky humor and content. For those readers that have read other Tatiana Vila books will enjoy this story as well. It is not just another story line with different named characters but a whole new story. I love when authors are not afraid to break away from molds and previous works. I cherished that this book while being a complete story; it set up the future books in an exciting way that leaves the future story wide open with so many interesting possibilities.

I got sucked into this story very quickly.Dafne was such a loveable character. I loved all her snark and quick wit.Its always nice to see a character that is not afraid to be themselves no matter if it makes them well liked or not. Dafne is such a positve character because she plays by her own rules. She alone made me want to continue reading this story. I loved the fierce protectiveness she had for her family. This story was well written with such vivid descriptions that made me really visualize it all in my mind. I loved the interaction between Dafne and Ian and cant wait to see what happens with them next and the changes that am sure will come into play with Dafne and Buffy now. I have to say I had a lot of unanswered questions that I am hoping are cleared up the next book. Overall this was a cute book and I would love to read the next one.

I like the premise and like others I felt that it really got good towards the end. I'm conflicted when it comes to Dafne, I liked her sarcastic wit and retorts regardless of the fact that it was a defensive mechanism. I didn't like the fact that she always seemed to contradict herself. It was almost as if she has no true personality. The whole thing with her sisters boyfriend was not needed for storys sake, I guess it was added in due to the cliche formula of having a love interest to keep people engaged during the slow moving points. I also didn't like how the readers were left with nothing to figure out since Dafne had all the answers even though there was no basis as to how she did it. 17 yo gut feelings don't amount to to much in the real world but in a book the impossible will be forced on you to be possible. Like I said nice premise, too easy, unrealistic.

Definitely a good start of a series!! I loved the characters, the setting, the plot, the tabasco-hot chemistry between Dafne and Ian, and Comus! God I loved Comus! He's one of the most interesting and funny characters I've ever come across.
I can't wait to read the next installment!

To be honest, I was too sleepy to read this properly. I mainly wanted to get to the end. The writing can be long-winded but it's easily skimmable to get to the interesting parts without missing out.
Dafne and Buffy don't have much of a relationship.
Even though Buffy is the “cool” twin she really wants to reconnect with Dafne. Dafne's cynical and sarcastic with a lot of walls up but she loves Buffy and tries to oblige.
Dafne is quite a depressing character and she's hard to like. I might've got on with her better if she wasn't so nasty. She's not an Ice Queen she's a serious bitch. I actually think there's something seriously wrong with her. Some kind of social disorder maybe.

Linda - “Sheesh, no wonder why guys are so afraid of you.”
Dafne - “Oh, what a cruel world, loneliness hunts me. I’ll never meet love.”
She shook her head. “And you really don’t care.”
“Of course I don’t. The day I’ll decide I want a guy…he’ll come to me in a heartbeat, easy as that.”

Ian and Dafne love to fight. Despite the awkward fact that Ian is dating Buffy, he and Dafne are downright combustible. Their chemistry is off the charts. Ian is crazy about Dafne. He always has been from the start. But she shot him down because he was a womaniser with PDA issues. I love how Ian later relates what that meant to him.

“Well, that day you made me realize some things.” He brought up his eyes to mine and locked them there. “That if I didn't change, all the good girls were going to pass me by.”

This book is a little weird. But I desperately need to know what happens to Ian and Dafne. Sequel, where are you?

First, let's just ignore all the grammar and typos errors in this book. I was a bit annoyed by them, but when I checked out Ms. Vila's blog, I discovered that English is not her first language, so taking that in to consideration, her translating from her native language to English was pretty good.

When I first started this book, I thought I was going to give it 4 stars. The characters are well developed and story started out pretty good, but somewhere along the way, I started to ask myself "When is something going to happen? When is it going to start to get exciting?"

The premise of the book is how suddenly in this small talk, kids/adults go to sleep and fall in to comas. No one can figure out what's wrong. Other than the small little fact that they won't wake up, they are perfectly fine. While it sounds interesting, I just felt it never quite 'got off the ground' and took off in a direction that got me really excited and interested.

She did a good job near the end with world building and the tension/relationship between Dafne and Ian (her sister's boyfriend) but this book just fell short for me. There is a 2nd one in the series, and the ending has peaked my interest a bit to want to see where she goes with this, so I will likely pick up book 2 when it is released.

WOW!

That was one hell of a book!

Seriously, I canNOT remember the last time I encountered a TRULY badass main character. What I mean by "badass" doesn't include whinies, the ones lacking self-confidence, droolies, the ones sighing whenever they see boys and the ones which scream the-author-tried-but-i-ended-up-a-total-mess.

Dafne is so full of it. I loved her personality, how she keeps up the cold Ice Queen facade till the end. It was truly what kept the plot flowing.

The plot was surprisingly good. I don't know what I had expected when I picked up my Kindle, but I couldn't put Break Away down until the end.

The best thing about the story is, nothing seems forced. We all know writers who twists reality and everyday actions-reactions so that all fits into a YA book. This book is NOT one of them.

The fact that Dafne is not drooling over her sister's boyfriend is a relief. It gave me the hope that YA characters (or some of them anyway) actually have some self-control.

You really, really should read this book. It's a great opportunity to get away from the crappy turned-out-to-be-book "books" that are out there. I can't wait to read the next book.

I love the cover. Its the first thing that caught my attention. It made me want to see what ii was about. when I read it. i was like what would happen next. I really want to read the next book.Dafne is a strong character. holdin a lot baggage on her shoulders. with her parent gone and then her sister falls into an coma. Ian is... I don't know to express him. he also is a strong character. he's is dating her sister.
she thinks of him as the womanizer. for which when thy meet he was kissing a girl and seeing him with different girls all the time. she think he ganna hurt her sister. besides hating him for that. deep inside she likes him. and ian likes her. since she back talk to him when they first meet.
Dafne is the only one to take her out of the coma. there are other stuff that is going on and information of whats happing. but i wont say it all. the last thing i'll say is that there is a scene between Ian a and Defan. That would leave you smiling and happy. saying finally.
i definitely recommend this book to evryone. once again i love the cover. hope you get to read the book and enjoy it the way i have and even more.

So i've been reading a LOT of books lately but haven't felt the need to review them i mean they were great books and all but nothing to write home about literally but i read this and i was like OMG i could't wait to tell anybody and everybody about it 4.5 only because love triangles suck and this one is especially awkward and in some spots it was kinda draggy but it was good she was a great heroine she acts super self absorbed but she is so far from being self absorbed that its nearly comical she just hides to protect herself and honestly who doesn't put up a few walls but whats sad is that her sister doesn't realise this yet her sister's boyfriend does sooo love triangle sorta starts then then sis goes into a coma now she has to find out what is causing half the country to fall into these strange comas but he is persistent to tag along so all and all really good book :) to read more reviews like this go to http://mytinkerbellblog.tumblr.com/

Break Away is an interesting paranormal series with no vampires, werewolves, angels or zombies. This review is very hard for me to write since I can't say I loved or hated it. My thoughts are very middle of the road. The idea of the story is unique, but it didn't really pull me in since the first half of the book, I was wishing that something would happen. Once things got moving, I was intrigued, but I don't know if I am interested enough to keep reading the series.

I read this thanks to read-to-review and I wouldn't have finished if I didn't have to post a review. I really, really hated Dafne for a good half of the book. I found her brattish, arrogant and hypocritical. I had some trouble with the prose and the editing too. That being said I'm glad I stuck with it because the last half of the book was good with a good ending. I liked the world of Chimera and the whole concept. It was original but I don't think I'll read the sequel.

Was very different then I thought it was going to be and was just to new age for me. Also for her sister's boyfriend to be cheating on her while in a coma with the main character was also just not right in my mind. The writing was good and the story was intriguing but the morals in the story was just something I couldn't get past. If you are into books about astral projection and achieving a higher state of consciousnesses then this is a book for you.

I liked it, but didn't love it. It was a new and interesting concept. I liked the characters and their chemistry, but something felt off to me. The writing got a little confusing when I read certain parts and I felt like there were times where I couldn't connect with the characters or they felt unrealistic. Those contentions aside, the book was rather interesting and I do look forward to seeing what happens next.

Ugh. This book was quite annoying to read and it wasn't until the last 2 or 3 chapters that I even started liking the pace of the story. It was slow and the main character was hard to like, a walking contradiction. For most of the book I felt like it was a slightly different version of the movie "The Happening" I'm just glad I finished it
