I am quite happy to read about young Rachel Morgan in her novelette, freshly wanting to join the IS and having to deal with her mom, her brother, and her father's ghost.
Of course, magic doesn't always go the way we want.
Introduce ourselves to Pierce, here. :) Cool little mystery/adventure, too.
I'd recommend this for anyone who wants the story that is only hinted at in the later novel.

Two Ghosts for Sister Rachel surprised me in the best way. I went in expecting a quick side story, something fun to fill in a gap in The Hollows timeline, but it ended up giving me a much deeper connection to Rachel Morgan as a character. Seeing her at such a vulnerable point in her life, long before she becomes the confident and stubborn witch we know later, adds a whole new layer to her journey. She is still figuring out who she is, still trying to prove herself, and still dealing with the weight of expectations that feel impossible to meet. That rawness makes the story hit harder than I expected.
What really stood out to me is how Kim Harrison balances the emotional moments with the supernatural tension. The ghosts are entertaining and eerie, but they also serve a purpose in Rachel’s growth. They push her, challenge her, and force her to step into her own strength even when she feels like the world is stacked against her. The pacing is tight, the dialogue feels honest, and the stakes are clear without ever overwhelming the heart of the story.
I also loved the family dynamics. Rachel’s relationship with her brother and her parents feels real in a way that makes the quieter scenes just as memorable as the action. You can feel her frustration, her longing to be taken seriously, and her determination to carve out a place for herself. It is the kind of character development that makes you want to reread the main series with fresh eyes.
For a novella, it delivers more emotion and depth than many full‑length novels. It is touching, tense, and surprisingly uplifting. If you already love The Hollows, this fills in a piece of Rachel’s past that makes her future even more meaningful. If you are new to the series, it is a great introduction to the tone and heart of Kim Harrison’s world.
Five stars without hesitation. This one stays with you.

So that’s a story. Young Rachel (finishing school, desperately wanting to go to the IS), still living at home with her mother, when her brother comes to visit! Given that we’ve barely seen them on page (have we see her brother?), it’s some fun bit of backstory…
And then the entire story revolves around trying to contact Rachel’s dead father to win a bet (and to join the IS in his footsteps), well, of course things are going to get complicated.
It’s a fun story with just the right amount of gut punches and backstory. I do wonder what we’ll see ‘in between’. How does Rachel end up strong enough to go on runs? She certainly isn’t doing that well here. And will see see her time at that camp?
Overall, worth the read!
Side note: red eye flights being renamed to ‘vamp flights’ is a fun detail.

Read the English version of this story, "Two Ghosts for Sister Rachel" in the compilation "Holidays are Hell."
I really was happy to have a short story about a teenage Rachel, just coming into her powers, struggling with her physical weakness caused by her disease, and determined to become a runner for Inderland Security. There is also the added dynamic of her family having survived the death of her father.
I'm hoping there are a few more stories about this earlier time in her life.

I enjoyed this a lot and it gave a much better perspective on Rachel and her drive to be a runner. It also showed a side to her that is only discussed in the books but we never get to see how it truly affects her and that is being a survivor of the rose-wood syndrome. It also shows how she got her unreal expectations with men by showing us her first encounter with Pierce.

Ein sehr süßer Zwischenband, Rachel entwickelt sich wirklich schnell zu einer jungen Frau, der erste großer Ärger, ein paar letzte verirrte Hormone und ein gutes Elternhaus. Neben Rachels Backround, kriegen wir auch eine spannende Zwischengesichte mit Geistern und Vampiren. Was will man mehr.

Wer die Bücher rund um Rachel Morgan nicht kennt, hat die Welt verpennt. Rachel's Geschichte beginnt in "Blutspur". Sie ist eine Hexe, die bei der Inderland Security - der Polizei, die für die Paranormalen zuständig ist - als Kopfgeldjägerin arbeitet.
Und da jede Karriere irgendwo ihren Ursprung hat, lässt uns Kim Harrison nun auch hinter die Kulissen blicken...
Rachel Morgan, 19, ist eine Hexe. Genau wie ihre Mutter. Doch auf eine Uni zu gehen und Zaubersprüche zu lernen ist ganz und gar nicht das, was sie will. Nach ihrer langen Krankheit in der Kindheit und dem langen Unterricht durch ihre Mutter ist Rachel weiter als andere Kinder in ihrem Alter und hat Probleme mit den älteren zu denen sie in die Klasse kommt. Die meisten sehen in ihr nur ein kleines, schwaches Mädchen und haben keinen Respekt vor ihr. Um sich behaupten zu können, nimmt Rachel Karateunterricht und hat sogar den schwarzen Gürtel.
Als ihr Bruder Robbie vier Jahre nach seinem Fortgehen zu Besuch kommt, will er sie unbedingt überreden ein paar Zauberkurse zu belegen und schlägt vor, dass sie und ihre Mutter ihn nach Portland begleiten. Als Rachel ihm dann eröffnet, dass sie zur I.S. will, wo auch ihr Vater gearbeitet hat, ist Robbie strickt dagegen. Schließlich hat seinem Vater dieser Job das Leben gekostet und man bindet sich auf Lebenszeit, ohne Chance je wieder auszusteigen. Doch Rachel ist sich ihrer Sache mehr als sicher und so handeln die beiden einen Deal aus.
Ihr Vater soll entscheiden! Da dieser Tod ist, kommt also nur ein Gespräch mit seinem Geist in Betracht und Robbie hat auch schon den passenden Zauber parat. Jedoch verlangt er, dass Rachel den Zauber ohne jegliche fremde Hilfe windet.
Als der Zauber offensichtlich gelingt und einen splitterfasernackten Mann vor ihren Füßen landet, ist nicht nur Rachel überrascht, sondern vorallem ihr Bruder. Denn der Zauber ist einer der schwersten überhaupt...
Ich habe dieses Buch fast in einem Ruck ausgelesen. Viele Seiten hat es ja nicht, dafür ist es aber wieder randvoll mit jeder Menge toller Rachel-Power!
Ich kenne Rachel bisher nur aus den anderen Büchern und in denen ist sie eine erwachsene Kopfgeldjägerin, die sich allen möglichen Gefahren schon gestellt und immer wieder mit einem saloppen Spruch auf den Lippen sicheren Hauptes entflohen ist. Sie ist eine großartige Persönlichkeit, der ich aber hin und wieder gerne mal die Leviten lesen würde...
In "Blutflüstern" ist sie neunzehn Jahre alt und hat ein Ziel vor Augen, woran sie noch leichte Zweifel hat. Sie muss noch ihren Weg finden und im Laufe dieser Geschichte, wo sie zusammen mit einem Geist aus dem 19. Jahrhundert ein kleines Mädchen aus den Fängen eines pädophielen jahrhundertalten Vampirs retten muss, erlangt sie die ein oder andere Selbsterkenntnis und festigt ihre wahre Berufung.
Bislang hatte man in der Romanreihe zwar Einblicke auf Rachel's Familie, aber es hat Spaß gemacht mal ihren Bruder und ihre Mutter in Aktion zu sehen.
Und auch Gordon Pierce, der Geist, den Rachel durch ihren Zauber beschwört, ist ein lustiger Geselle. Sein Sprachgebrauch verleiht der Geschichte etwas exotisches. Es hat unglaublichen Spaß gemacht auf der einen Seite Pierce' Wortgewandtheit und auf der anderen Seite Rachel's Schimpfkanonaden verfolgen zu können.
"Blutflüstern" hat eine kurze, aber sehr spannungsgeladene und tolle Geschichte offenbart. Ich blicke gerne auf Anfänge eines Charakters zurück und es wäre wirklich wünschenswert, wenn es noch mehr solcher kleinen Einblicke in die Welt rund um Rachel Morgan geben würde. Nachdem in "Blutmagie" Ivy Tamwood - Rachel's spätere Partnerin bei der I.S. und Mitbewohnerin - eine Vergangenheit bekam, würde ich mir wünschen auch sowas über Jenks, den kleinen Pixie, lesen zu können.
Warum nicht? Kim Harrison würde das garantiert schaffen!

Ich mag diese Gegensätze zwischen ihr und Pierce, nachdem sie ihn in einer völlig fremden Zeit - nach einem missglückten Zauber - wieder zum "Leben" erweckt.
Mit ihrer Art zu schimpfen, verwirrt sie ihn so manches Mal, aber auch all die neue Eindrücke, die er bekommt, lassen nur noch mehr Verwirrung bei ihm entstehen.
Rachel selbst ist ebenso wie ihre Mutter eine Hexe und möchte - gegen den Willen ihren Bruders und ihrer Mutter - nach dem Tod ihres Vaters in seine Fussstapfen treten. Erst nachdem sie zusammen mit Pierce dessen letzte Handlung auf Erden "vollzogen" hat, entscheidet sich die Mutter dazu, die Einverständniserklärung zur Aufnahme an der I.S. ( Inderland Security - die Polizei, die für die Paranormalen zuständig is) zu unterschreiben, damit sie - ebenso wie eben ihr verstorbener Vater - Kopfgeldjäger werden kann.
Ich denke, ich muss mir die anderen Bücher, die dazu gehören auch noch besorgen, um mir ein entgültiges Bild zu machen, auch wenn ich da bei der Anzahl an Bänden einiges vor mir habe. *lach*
Aber ich bin zumindest neugierig geworden, wie ihr Leben weiterhin verlaufen wird, wie ich sich an der I.S. schlagen wird.

A solid novella-length work about a young Rachel Morgan as she attempts to summon the ghost of her father in order to get permission to join the IS. Better than many of Harrison's other shorter works, I think part of its success is due to the fact that the longer novella format gives her more room to work with than the short story. Although a prequel to the primary novels, the events in this book set up characters and events that start to appear around the 7th book.
Unfortunately, some of the events detailed in this book are later contradicted in the primary novels. I don't think this story is to blame, as much as Harrison wanting to integrate characters and ideas without having planned ahead to do so, and thus essentially being forced to retcon certain details in the novels to fit the greater theme. It's a shame because the later changes potentially detract from what is a solid story.

I've put off reading this because I didn't really want to read it toward my goal, but I was bored and couldn't find anything to capture my interest, so I gave in.
I'm glad I did. It put a lot of the intricacies of the series into perspective. I wish I had read it earlier, then I would understand Pierce and Rachel's relationship. I understand her draw to him now, but I still find it odd.

Totally worth the read, We now know how and when Rachel and Pierce met and the FIRE started, She might not have ever thought twice about him and the passionate kiss they shared the one night they worked together but I am sure.... He remembered it and it make purgatory all the easier for him.... LOVED IT.... and then of course the other stories are good to. The clair switch project was awesome too. Read it and find out for your self... No spoilers here..

I jst looved these short stories,it gives such insight into the characters backgrounds.It really adds to the the Hallows Series. Wish i had them as a hard copies instead of jst on the e-readers to go along with my collection. :)

"Blutflüstern" hat 1 Nachteil: Sie ist eine Novelle und damit viel zu schnell wieder vorbei. "Blutflüstern" erzählt die Ereignisse einer einzigen Nacht, als die Hexe Rachel Morgan aus der bekannten Rachel-Morgan-Serie von Kim Harrison 18 Jahre alt ist und statt ihres Vaters versehentlich den Geist des attraktiven Gordian Pierce beschwört. Nun haben Rachel und er nur bis zum Sonnenaufgang Zeit, um Pierces Seele und ein unschuldiges Mädchen zu retten.

Just as good as the first time. A short story full of the typical Kim Harrison - Humor everyone loves. Perfect for these who want to see more of Pierce & a teenage-version of Rachel who's still learning how to kick ass!

I really enjoyed this short story. I feel like it elaborates on Rachel's need for the adrenalin high that lands her in potentially lethal situations constantly
