Science Fiction has proved notoriously difficult to define. It has been explained as a combination of romance, science and prophecy; as a genre based on an imagined alternative to the reader's environment; and as a form of fantastic fiction and historical literature. It has also been argued that science fiction narratives are the most engaged, socially relevant, and responsive to the modern technological environment. This Very Short Introduction doesn't offer a history of science fiction, but instead ties examples of science fiction to different historical moments, in order to demonstrate how science fiction has evolved over time. David Seed looks not only at literature, but also at drama and poetry, as well as film. Examining recurrent themes in science fiction he looks at voyages into space, the concept of the alien and alternative social identities, the role of technology in science fiction, and its relation to time - in the past, present, and future.

Meh.

By the time David Seed eliminates everything he is not going to do in this very short introduction to science fiction -- define science fiction, trace its development chronologically, consider non-Western SF, engage with SF scholarship/criticism, etc. -- all that's left is to pick several topics such as "Time" and offer a short laundry list of a bibliographic essay on SF works addressing this theme. Even then, Seed fails to point out when major works responded to each other or how these works, and SF as a whole, represent a conversation.

If you're looking only for a U.S. and U.K.-centric SF reading list, this book could come in handy. But if you're looking to better understand the genre or come away with a broader, more nuanced understanding of how SF developed or why it is important, look elsewhere. There are many better introductions.

I can't imagine that anyone who picks up this book is expecting to find what's actually inside. The cover reads "Science Fiction" something that, even if everyone has their own personal definition, most people understand - except the author of this book. No one (in my not-so-humble opinion) picks up a book called "Science Fiction" and expects 60% of the book to deal with material written before the turn of the century. No, not the 21st century, the 20th century. I don't pick up a book called "Science Fiction" to read about stuff written in the 1700's. I'm sure there is a niche for whom this book is intended (professors wanting to "expand their horizons," perhaps?), but then the book needs a new title to better relate its inner contents.
Everything in this book (for me) fell into one of two categories: 1) it's so old or obscure that I don't care, or 2.) I already knew that.
My search for a good, quality overview of science fiction continues...

يعتبر الخيال العلمي موضوع مفضل لكثير من القراء، ومتابعي الأفلام السينيمائية، ويعتبر كذلك موضوع هام جدا بالنسبة للعلماء؛ لأنه يفتح أمامهم بابا للأفكار الجديدة، ومن ثم بابا للابتكارات الجديدة.
هذا الكتاب قدم موضوع الخيال العلمي من مداخل متعددة، فالكتاب تحدث اولا عن رحلات إلي الفضاء، بعتبار أن الرحلات الفضائية هي أعظم وأكثر ما يدل علي خيالية الموضوع، حيث تعتبر أفلام الخيال العلمي ورواياته _ كلها تقريبا _ موضوع السفر في الفضاء الموضوع الأبرز والأهم للحديث عنه. ومن غزو الفضاء إلي لقاء الكائنات الفضائية، وابتكار الأفكار المتنوعة حول طبيعة هذه الكائنات، فممكن أن تكون خيرة, قد تكون العكس، وعلي أساس طبيعتهم تكون القصة قصة صراع للبقاء أو قصة تعاون وتنافس.
تحدث الكتاب عن التكنولوجيا المتقدمة في مجال الخيال العلمي، كذلك تحدث عن المدن الخيالية في المستقبل، وقسم هذه المدن إلي نوعين: مدن يغلب عليها الخير المطلق، وهذه تسمي يوتوبيا، والأخري يغلب عليها الفساد والشر المطلق، وهذه يسمونها ديستوبيا.
الزمن في الخيال العلمي له باب كامل في الكتاب، حيث السفر في الزمن بين الماضي البعيد جدا، والمستقبل البعيد جدا كذلك يعتبر من الموضوعات المفضلة لكتاب الخيال العلمي، وباحثي مجال المستقبليات، وكذلك صانعي الأفلام الخيالية.
الكتاب يقع في أقل من 150 صفحة، ويعتبر سهل في مادته، ومن له متابعة ولو ضعيفة في هذا الميدان عليه أن يعتبر نفسه قد قرأه، لأنه لا يقدم جديد بعيدا عما نعرفه بصورة عامة.

I am a big fan of science fiction, and like most other fans consider myself fairly knowledgeable about this genre. Nonetheless, I have not thought deeply and systematically about science fiction, and this very short introduction was very informative and enlightening.

This book presents a good short overview of some of the most important Sci-fi writers of all time: H.G. Wells, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. Le Guin, and many others. This is a very nice and historically well-researched introduction, with plenty of references to some of the most influential works of science fiction. The book is structured thematically along the main subgenres of science fiction: voyages into space, alien encounters, science fiction and technology, utopias and dystopias, and fictions of time. I would have also liked to see a dedicated genetic manipulation and biotechnology chapter. This has become one of the most significant science fiction themes in recent years. The last chapter deals with the field of science fiction as such, and it takes a bird’s view of science fiction literature.

One slight issue that I have with this introduction is its overwhelming emphasis on science fiction literature. A few notable movies are mentioned, but only as book tie-ins. The fact is that the most successful movie of all time (Avatar), as well as many others on the top-grossing list, are all very much science fiction works. Far from being a fringe, science fiction is one of the most dominant forms of the cinematic arts. Hence an introductory book like this one should have given it much more space. Another minor annoyance are the several attempts throughout the book to raise the issues that are very dominant in the academic literature departments, but are very far from the concerns of most science fiction readers. I feel that these attempts were made in order to make science fiction seem more important from the point of view of “serious” literary studies, but I find these concerns somewhat artificial. Fortunately these digressions are few and far between.

Overall, this is a very well written book that would be of a lot of interest to all the science fiction fans, as well as to people who want to learn more about this fascinating genre.

"It is helpful to think of an SF narrative as an embodied thought experiment whereby aspects of our familiar reality are transformed or suspended."

I'm not entirely sure what the aim of this little one was: it neither conveyed a great passion for the genre, nor did it provide a great quantity of information for those already in possession of that passion.



In a somewhat sober tone, David Seed picks some examples to elaborate the historical moments leading to their creation and demonstrates through that how hard it is to grasp science fiction as a genre. As this was meant to be A Very Short Introduction, I think I would have preferred a more linear overview instead of different plots' summaries.

He does leave you with some – frankly, obvious – points to remember about science fiction, though. Science fiction in its form we enjoy it today has been around since the 20th century and is a genre constantly evolving and changing. Not afraid to interrogate the limits of human nature, identity and difference. Aliens for example are so predominate in the genre as to encourage readers / watchers to re-examine their self-perception through confrontation with The Other.

I can't say I truly enjoyed reading this, but this has been my first read of this series, too, so maybe I'm just not sure enough of what their aim truly is and who they are targeted at. The curious, the knowledgable? Either way, this was a quick read and did leave me with one or two interesting thoughts, so I also wouldn't go as far as calling this a waste of time.

One of the best VSI books I’ve read. I really appreciated how he paid attention to lots of 19th century examples. This helps to give the reader a much broader perspective and understanding of how far back some of the conventions of the genre go.

Abrogating any attempt at defining science fiction, the author of this book simply takes a list of things that get called by that name, loosely organized, and says, 'It's something like this!'

The overwhelming focus of the book is on novels, with other media only mentioned as asides or alluded to briefly. This seems to me at least to be a rather bizarre approach, given that the whole genre of SF (as the author admits) is very much defined by the fact that it has come about contemporary to various new media - be it film, TV series, or comic book. This last one, perversely, is not even mentioned as far as I noticed, which is probably this book's biggest failure.

But for my money, the unifying factor behind SF is not its nature as a genre at all, but as a subculture - it is a group of people who like That Kind Of Thing. This book does get around to mentioning this in the last chapter, but only in passing. I feel that a sociological study of this phenomenon would be far more interesting.

This book was like listening to Sheldon Cooper. Too much names and information, and less focus about the essence of the subject.
I expected to read a book that discuss, through a few well known examples of fiction and movies, the meaning, philosophy, necessity, and the joy of sci-fiction but it went through unnecessary listing of endless novel titles like it was a showoff.

Zaskakujące, jak obszerny zakres tematów i pojęć związanych z literaturą i - w nieco mniejszym stopniu - kinem science udało się zawrzeć Davidowi Seedowi w tak niewielkiej objętościowo publikacji. "Krótkie wprowadzenie do science-fiction", rzeczywiście jest "krótkie", ale niech to Was nie zmyli - autor udało się zawrzeć w niej ogromną ilość zagadnień i tematów. Sięga do najstarszych źródeł, które zapoczątkowały istnienie gatunku, wskazuje na różne tropy i motywy charakterystyczne dla literatury fantastycznonaukowej, umiejscawiając ją w różnych kontekstach - historycznych, politycznych, społecznych i socjologicznych - oraz przedstawia jej ewolucję i wpływ na literaturę głównego nurtu.

Znakomita, zwięzła i rzeczowa publikacja, która - co jest w mojej opinii jej jedynym mankamentem - z racji czysto analitycznego podejścia profesora Davida Seeda, może się okazać dla niektórych czytelników nieco nieprzystępna. Jakkolwiek, jest to pozycja, którą każdy fan literatury - i nie tylko - science-fiction powinien posiadać w swoich zbiorach. Polecam!

“The urge to impose a single classification on SF ignores the generic hybridity of many novels: incorporation of the Gothic in The Island of Dr Moreau, of Shakespeare’s The Tempest in Forbidden Planet, and so on.”

This book delivered precisely what it promised: a BRIEF INTRODUCTION. Focusing more on the turn of the 20th-century texts, the novel introduces the various significant literary and cultural works that potentially define the origins of science fiction. It engages with the various subgenres that make up SF and explores historical and contextual factors, but never explicitly provides a definition which might put some people off.

To me, this book serves more as an encouragement for further study. The author doesn't attempt to box in SF with a rigid definition but instead provides enough context for the reader to dive deeper into the subject. As someone invested in the academic study of SF, I found this a great way to discover other fictional and scholarly texts relevant to the topic.

Čitanka za svakog ljubitelja SF-a. Lijepo pisan, prohodan prikaz glavnih tema i preokupacija SF-a (s najvećim naglaskom na književnost i malo manje filma, za otalo je Seed fino objasnio da nema prostora u Vrlo kratkom uvodu...). Ovo dođe kao dobar početak prije nego što se uhvatite njegovo Companiona. Obavezna literatura za svakog željnog malo više spoznaje, znanja, očuđenja. Ne bojte se, o teoriji žanra ima taman dovoljno da ne ispadnete neznalica na pub kvizu, a opet da ne kolutate očima (ta dovraga niste neki komparatist, kritičar ili teoretičar). Možda vam i pomogne u budućnosti izbjeći čitanje nekih proklamiranih remek-djela koja su zapravo sranje.

يعتبر هذا الكتاب مقدمة قصيرة للتعريف بأدب الخيال العلمي، المنفصل عن الواقع. حاول ديفيد سيد توضيح أحداث الكثير والكثير من الروايات والافلام والقصص المتعلقة بهذا الموضوع بأسلوب شيق حتماً..
يتألف من ستة فصول، يتحدث الأول عن الرحلات إلى الفضاء في الخيال العلمي وكيف تطورت مع مرور الزمن وتوالي الاكتشافات العلمية، والذي جعل الخيال يقترب من الواقع.. كانت اغلب الروايات التي تتحدث عن الرحلات الفضائية تستخدم مركبات ضد الجاذبية لغرض زيادة السرعة وتقليل المسافة للوصل باسرع وقت نحو بقية الكواكب..وأيضاً لم تقتصر هذه الرحلات الاستكشافيه على الفضاء القريب وحسب، وانما شملت ايضاً الارض نفسها وجوف الارض...

اما الفصل الثاني فهو بعنوان لقاء الكائنات الفضائية والذين يختلف شكلهم من كاتب لآخر ومن فيلم لآخر لكنهم عموماً اصغر حجماً واكثر ذكائاً (مرات يطلعوهم متوحشين مرات حبابين حسب نفسية الكاتب 😁). من المهم توضيح ان مفهوم الكائن الفضائي في ادب الخيال العلمي لا يشير فقط إلى مخلوقات مختلفة تعيش في كوكب آخر، بل قد يشير إلى الاغتراب الاجتماعي مثل التناقض الطبقي بين الفقراء والاغنياء..بمعنى ان مصطلح الكائن الفضائي يشير إلى الاختلاف (هسه ابن كوكب المشتري يگول لاصدقائه علينه: توجد في كوكب الارض كائنات فضائية غريبة الاطوار تعمل على تدمير وخراب ذلك الكوكب المسكين بما فيه ومن عليه..أليس هذا غريباً يا أصحاب..؟! يي بداعتي غريب ظلوا احچوا علينه نستاهل 👍)

الفصل الثالث تحت عنوان الخيال العلمي والتكنولوجيا، من المعروف ارتباط الخيال العلمي بالتكنولوجيا فنلاحظ ان وجود كائنات فضائية مرتبط بالتطور التكنولوجي حيث الاجهزة الغريبة العجيبة والبنايات أم گرون (شايفين فيلم كارتون عدنان ولينا هنا تقريباً نفس الشي 😂)

الفصل الرابع يتحدث عن المدن الفاضلة 'يوتوبيا' والمدن الفاسدة 'ديستوبيا' في الخيال العلمي، ونجد هذا الموضوع في الكثير من الروايات التي اشار اليها المؤلف مع شرح بسيط وافي لاهم ماذكر فيها...

الفصل الخامس الخيال العلمي والزمن، يرتبط الخيال العلمي بالزمن، فالحاظر لاينفصل عن تصورات الماضي وتوقعات المستقبل (وهنا يگولك ساهمة نظرية التطور والدراسات الجيولوجية بتوسيع نطاق الزمن بحيث اصبح التاريخ البشري مجرد حقبة زمنية وجيزة ليس الا...)

الفصل السادس مجال الخيال العلمي لم يحتوي هذا الفصل على تعريف لهذا المجال وانما تناول مواضيع التجديد في الخيال العلمي ونقده و تحدث عن مساهمة المجلات والتي لعبت دوراً مهماً في تطور هذا النوع من الأدب إذ كانت وسيلة للنشر بجانب دورها كساحة للنقاش المستمر عن طبيعة هذا المجال.

What I'm learning about the "Very Short Introduction" series is that they can be excellent, but dry in an audiobook format. They're "sit down and park your butt" books that require reading digitally or in paper form. In the latter instances one can re-read a paragraph and take the time to absorb the content and take notes. One can't do that when listening to an audiobook on the way to work. These books are short, but intellectually meaty. They need to be digested.

This particular book within the series is commendable for treating science fiction as a legitimate literary genre, something that has been overlooked in the academy. In this work the author frames his analysis thematically, looking at various themes within science fiction such as utopian fiction, cyberpunk, steampunk, etc., and working forward historically from the first examples to the most recent. The book includes mention of science fiction films as well.

The enthusiastic reader is going to get a huge list of "Gee, I gotta have these" books that the author introduces throughout the work, along with brief (sometimes too brief) descriptions in their role in contributing to the themes within which they're found.

So this may be yet another I have to buy for my shelf.

When you want a little context and history for those tales of utopias/dystopias, the imperialist drive of the space operas, the switch to technology as the driving factor rather than conquest, types of reality or the changing form of aliens over time, then this is a succinct little guide. Revelling in the new acceptance of SF, this book traces lines from the late 19th century to the present day, establishing the types of concerns that have interested each generation of SF writers.

There are some eye-opening points which have been rather lost over time, such as whether we see aliens as groups to conquer or deadly rivals for a different prize, and a look at how our view of our place in the universe has been changed by scientific advances of the last 100 years.

A good kick-off point from which to gain that overview that starts to perceive context by itself.

A solid short introduction to science fiction, largely by theme. There are no great insights in this book but it provides a good basic starting point for anyone not well versed in the genre and wanting an up-to-date guide to where they might put some time into learning more.

As one expects nowadays, obeisance is made to the small but highly respectable contribution of feminist writers and to the tiny group of self-consciously black authors in the genre. There is a respectful slight nod to Marxism so the text clearly comes from the modern academy.

There are around 15 decent illustrations.

Etter å ha lest noen få science fiction-bøker tenkte jeg at det ville være morsomt å lese en bok om hva science fiction er. Dessverre var boken på mange måter en oppramsing av hvordan forskjellige SF-bøker behandler verdensrommet, aliens, teknologi, dystopier/utopier, og tidsreiser. Dette var forsåvidt interessant, spesielt når boken tok opp SF jeg faktisk hadde lest. Men for de mange bøkene jeg knapt hadde hørt om - var dette mer en slags oppramsing uten kontekst.

Pertama-tama, apa yang anda pikirkan ketika mendengar istilah atau "Science Fiction" (atau, "Fiksi Ilmiah"). Ya, anda membanyangkan sebuah genre, bahkan waralaba, semisal Star Trek atau Star Wars.

Meski begitu, para akademisi sastra bahkan tidak menyepakati definisi yang tepat terhadap "Fiksi Ilmiah". Ada yang mengatakannya sebagai "Kombinasi atas Romansa, Sains, dan Ramalan", ada yang mengatakan "Spekulasi realistik terhadap kejadian di masa mendatang", dan ada yang mengatakan "Pembayangan sebuah alternatif ke dalam lingkungan pembaca".

Namun dari definisi ini saja anda dapat membayangkan karya mana saja yang dapat termasuk ke dalam genre "Fiksi Ilmiah". Misal seri film The Matrix (1999-2003), dimana mengasumsikan apa yang terjadi ketika robot mengusasi kehidupan manusia? Kemudian apa yang terjadi ketika pikiran manusia diunggah ke sebuah mesin raksasa ("Matrix")? Lalu bagaimana manusia melawan?

Contoh yang relevan terhadap pemaparan buku ini (dimana berfokus terhadap sastra), mungkin adalah terhadap film Blade Runner (Original, 1982). Film ini sendiri diadaptasi dari novel fiksi ilmiah berjudul Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968). Film dan Novel mengisahkan karakter bernama Rick Deckard, yang ditugaskan membunuh "Replikan" (Android, atau mesin yang didesain mirip manusia). "Spekulasi" yang ditampilkan buku (dan film) ini adalah, bahwa sekalipun para android didesain tidak menampakkan emosi sebagaimana manusia, terdapat karakter android yang dapat menampakkan emosi, sehingga membuat Rick Deckard jatuh cinta. Ya, apa yang membedakan Manusia dan Mesin (bila bukan emosi)?

Selain teknologi, buku ini mengkaji subjek lainnya yang kerap menjadi sumber spekulasi ialah; perjalanan ke luar angkasa, alien, utopia-distopia, dan konsep waktu. Utopia-distopia yang dimaksud disini adalah pembayangan sistem masyarakat, entah menuju ke arah lebih "baik" (Utopia) atau "buruk" (Distopia). "Konsep Waktu" yang dimaksud disini adalah pandangan mengenai waktu yang kerap berubah; bagaimana kita memandang masa lalu, ekspekstasi terhadap masa depan, serta pengaruhnya terhadap masa sekarang.

Anda telah mendapatkan contoh dan gambaran, mengenai apa itu "Fiksi Ilmiah". Buku ini dapat membantu anda sebab tujuan buku ini, adalah menunjukkan contoh-contoh lain dari karya "Fiksi Ilmiah" berdasarkan periode-periode sejarah tertentu. Terutama pada era Viktoria, paska tahun 1870an, dimana "Fiksi Ilmiah" muncul sebagai bentuk spekulasi terhadap temuan-temuan teknologi yang terus berkembang di masa tersebut, berikut kontak bahkan ketakutan terhadap masyarakat non-barat (sebagai, "Alien").

Tujuan selanjutnya dari buku ini, adalah bahwa "Fiksi Ilmiah" tidaklah dipahami secara statis, ia merupakan genre yang berkembang secara dinamis. Sebagaimana dicontohkan dalam Blade Runner (1982), bahwa genre Sci-Fi merupakan multi-media (dalam hal ini, novel dan film). Media lain termasuk majalah, puisi, gim video, bahkan papan permainan (well, setidaknya di Masyarakat Barat, utamanya negara-negara berbahasa Inggris; Inggris Raya dan Amerika Serikat).

Menjamurnya produk-produk film sebagaimana telah disebutkan di atas (Star Trek, Star Wars, The Matrix, Blade Runner), dan terjemahan beberapa novel yang kerap digolongkan "Fiksi Ilmiah" seperti "1984" (George Orwell, 1948), ke dalam bahasa Indonesia, membuat buku ini direkomendasikan bagi anda yang hendak mengeksplorasi lebih jauh genre ini.
