Born in 1901, Barbara Cartland started her writing career in journalism and completed her first book, Jigsaw, when she was just 24. An immediate success, it was the start of her journey to becoming the world’s most famous and most read romantic novelist of all time. Inspiring a whole generation of readers around the globe with her exciting tales of adventure, love and intrigue, she became synonymous with the Romance genre. And she still is to this day, having written over 644 romantic fiction books. As well as romantic novels, she wrote historical biographies, 6 autobiographies, plays, music, poetry and several advice books on life, love, health and cookery – totalling an incredible 723 books in all, with over 1 billion in sales. Awarded the DBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 in honour of her literary, political and social contributions, she was President of the Hertfordshire branch of the Royal College of Midwives as well as a Dame of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem and Deputy President of the St John Ambulance Brigade. Always a passionate advocate of woman’s health and beauty, she was dubbed ‘the true Queen of Romance’ by Vogue magazine in her lifetime. Her legend continues today through her wonderfully vivid romantic tales, stories that help you escape from the day to day into the dramatic adventures of strong, beautiful women who battle, often against the odds, eventually to find that love conquers all. Of course I had to read this book. Most people hate Barbara Cartland. Her heroines appear breathless and needy all the time, but I still love them. They're always clean and the good girl always turns the bad boy into a sweetheart. And, being a preacher's daughter, this was very romantic. Bryan still thinks I want a Duke.
For a time back in the 80’s & 90’s, my reading material of choice was frequently bodice rippers, historical fiction, and regency romances with a few contemporary best sellers thrown in for good measure. Most of them were pretty steamy (blush) &/or overly romantic, but I read them during a time in my life when I found myself as a single parent, and these books fit the bill. I found them to be highly entertaining.
I recently donated a slew of them, but I wanted to catalog them all the same. So if there is no rating here from me, it means that I don’t remember anything about the book other than I obviously read it. If there is a rating, it must have been in some way memorable for me.
I only wish that GoodReads had been around years ago so that I had some idea of the many books I have read – there were thousands! I did own a copy of this book, but most others came from the library because back then I could never have afforded the 100+ books I generally read in any given year.
And by the way, I still read bodice rippers – just not quite so many as I used to!
Imperious, handsome and gallant in battle, the Duke of Kingswood has stolen the hearts of many society Belles – but he is ‘a block of ice which nobody can melt’, determined never to marry. To continue the family line, he is counting on his cousin and heir presumptive Richard to marry well and produce a son.
To the Duke’s horror, Richard’s heart is bewitched by society siren and acclaimed beauty Lady Delyth Maulden – and disaster turns to tragedy when Richard finds his beloved in the arms of another, shoots him and turns his gun on himself. With Richard at death’s door, the Duke is determined that he shall find a more suitable young beauty to mend his broken heart; to marry him and thwart Lady Delyth’s scheming ways.
Like manna from heaven, a beautiful young grey-eyed waif calls to him for help for her ailing father as he rides through his estate. Could this modest, unassuming beauty be the ideal bride he seeks for Richard?
Benedicta gave a little cry and threw herself against the Duke.
"I am so frightened I may . . . disappoint you." He pulled her closer to him.
"Do you think I want you to know anything but what I shall teach you?" he asked. "I adore your ignorance, your purity."
He spoke with a fervor she had never heard be-fore.
"I was the first man who had ever kissed you. I shall also be the only man, and the last."
Benedicta gazed at him in awe.
"How could there be anyone else but you?" she asked wonderingly.
Very tenderly the Duke looked down into her eyes.
"You are mine," he said.
He kissed her until he could feel her soft and pliant against him, until his lips had awakened in her the first flickering flames of desire .. .
Like all Barbara Cartland books, The Duke and the Preacher's daughter is shallow, unoriginal, and not particularly well written. It's one quality is its predictability. Thus, it does the job.
Well, I'm not really a fan of the old kind of romance books so I didn't have high hopes for this book. It also being short - only 150 pages or whatever, meant that there wasn't enough room for good character development or understanding the depths of their characters. I also couldn't stand the FMC as she always - talked - like this. Not sure why the author did this, but it made reading her feel very stilted and took you out of the book many times.
I read this because of the title. If you read too many Cartland books back to back, they start to feel the same. All these breathless little damsels and young rich dukes. And the repetitive ‘kissed until the flickering flames of desire.’ They are wonderful little palate cleansers that really don’t offer much more than a good time. There’s a lot going on in life at the moment, so these are offering plenty of distraction. I’ve had a ridiculous amount of fun with these.
The last page, boring as fuck. The rest of the book, not bad. I only read this because my mum gave it to me and told me to read it, but it was not bad, I mean for being a romance book. It was entertaining and chill. Not bad
The story was so cute. Innocent naive h and older H is my kinda trope. I wish this book was on the steamier side. It’s a bit sweet and sugary for me. Nonetheless, I liked this short and sweet love story.
