Sakura, still grieving Oumi’s death, must fight the powerful youko of Uji. But she finds herself no match for the demon’s poisonous vapor. It’s time for Kohaku and Hayate—with a little help from the full moon—to step in.
Name in Japanese: 種村有菜 (Tanemura Arina) Western Zodiac: Pisces
Arina Tanemura was born on March 12, 1978. She's the author of Full Moon O Sagashite, Time Stranger Kyoko, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross, Sakura Hime Kaden, and more.
Her favorite hobby is Karaoke. One song that she sings is Smile, originally by Myco. She has two cats, named Riku and Kai. She has one elder and one younger sister and one brother. She's the type who hates to lose in anything. She also likes Ribon.
Tanemura says in one of her sidebars that she sees Sakura as being a stronger person than Haine, but they seem to be nearly identical to me. I don't like her take on romantic love that much--particularly in this series and Gentlemen's Alliance--but there's no doubt that it makes things dramatic.
Also: the people of the Moon Kingdom are reviled and feared by humanity as being nothing short of demons, so why is the royal house affiancing one to a royal prince? Surely there are enough noble ladies around that they wouldn't need to bother, especially since the Moon people tend to meet their ends by exterminating humans, and in turn being exterminated by them. Even if it's an "innocent until proven guilty" situation, it's evident they fully expect Sakura to meet the same fate.
The character development! I don't think I can completely blame the antagonist. I can understand why he did what he did, even though it's still not okay to do it. I hope the true villain gets what's coming to him.
Princess Sakura is a descendant of the creatures of the moon whose hand has been promised to the Imperial Prince Oura. To hide the powers that lurk inside her, Princess Sakura has been raised in isolation. But Sakura is unwilling to enter a marriage without love and chooses to run away - even at the risk of her true nature being exposed.
Sakura Hime: The Legend of Princess Sakura is everything wrong with The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross done right - it includes the best of all Tanemura's previous works. After the mess that was The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross, I was really worried that the then newest series of a long time favourite mangaka of mine would disappoint again. Luckily, that was far from the case!
The setting of the Heian Period allowed for interesting folklore and absolutely gorgeous designs for the characters; all those beautiful kimono and long flowing hair! Just the art alone makes this a pleasure to read. And thanks to the fantasy setting, many story elements that fell flat in The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross unfolded beautifully; there certainly was drama, but it suited the circumstances and we are, after all, talking about an Imperial Court. And I was so pleased to see her old humour, which I so love, return.
Although I felt that the romance developed very rapidly, I can't say that it bothered me. The first volumes do revolve around Sakura and Oura, but the plot focuses on so much more than just the two once the story gets going. Thanks to the romance not being the only focus, this story was rich in wonderful characters who all had their share of spotlight. There were wonderful friendships, family bonds, court intrigues, action and a plot that keeps you guessing. It was just such a beautifully well-rounded story from beginning to end.
This is one of those stories that has so many great characters, I wouldn't even know where to begin looking for a favourite. Although I am tempted to say that it is Sakura's little spirit friend Asagiri, there are so many others that are equally lovable. Sakura herself is also a nice character, I loved how she was sincere and naive yet would also simply be lazy and childish. There is a lot of character growth - not only for her but for the majority of characters. As there are so many characters to love, it's so easy to get emotionally invested and there's a lot of sadness the cast needs to overcome. It is also great how, as the story progresses, the line between good and evil dims more and more.
The only thing I would criticise about Sakura Hime is how conveniently everyone seems to be connected. Every character is related to someone else one way or another. After a while, it felt like a repetitive plot twist when yet another character was revealed to be someone's long-lost lover, friend or sibling. However, given all the wonderful elements of this plot, it is a small matter that can easily be ignored.
A delightful surprise through and through - I am utterly in love with the setting, characters and plot and after this am inclined to believe that Tanemura's stories work out best if there is at least a hint of fantasy involved! Now if only there were an artbook...
"Immorality isn't the gift you think. No matter how deep your body's wounds as long as you can withstand the pain you will heal over time. But immorality cannot heal emotional wounds."
I'm pretty sure this series is unfolding like a dramatic soap opera and I'm totally here for it! LOL! Though that opening quote would say otherwise and I think that is true for at least 25% of each volume, but especially this volume as it WAS darker then the previous two. That opening chapter with Oumi was so heart-hitting! Even things later on didn't make this an easygoing romantic tale!
But even with that said though, the characters continue to be a lot of fun, and especially liked Hayate in this volume! I easily see him being in my top three favorite characters, though it IS hard to compete with Asagiri and Kohaku right now because I continue to adore both of those girls! I definitely loved seeing them have some "girl talk" with Sakura and get to know each other better, even if it felt a little awkward/uncomfortable to hear what Sakura shared. (Though I will say, )
I will say that I am SO thankful that what I was wanted in the last volume happened in this one! It definitely felt like a moment of IT'S ABOUT TIME! LOL! Granted, the beginning was so heartbreaking, and even the new information that comes to light about what certain characters have said about others later on, it left it a little hard to FULLY appreciate this love blooming between Sakura and Aoba. There continue to be higher and higher stakes, and sure, this is just the beginning since the creator has even said she feels like this is where the story truly begins. BUT! It makes me thankful for the romantic reprieve because I really really like Sakura and Aoba together! They are similar in many ways, but also different, and feel like their differences make them stronger together. <3 (Also shoutout to Sakura for taking action and telling/asking Aoba if he is okay with simply letting her go! Like you go girl!)
Once again, I'm reeling from another ending in this series and have no idea where the story is going to go! Though this time I feel even more excited than usual because I'm curious how the worldbuilding is going to change AND how the unfolding of that chapter at the end is going to affect a lot of different characters!
Sakura continues to not have things easy, but like Oumi, I'm going to trust her to continue to shine bright and fight for a fate of HER choosing! (Also her magical girl transformation is so cool!)
In this volume Sakura, the princess of the Moon who has magical powers to destroy ancient monsters, is struggling with her relationships more than the monsters. There's still some action though. And that doesn't mean the plot isn't advancing, quite the opposite actually.
Sakura first has to deal with the heavy task of corrupted chancellor and transformed handmaid Oomi. It's not easy to be a magical girl and Tanemura gives a hint on the chapter notes that this indeed has an effect on Sakura. The emperor has also a fishy scheme that has been on since Sakura was a child and her brother was still alive. The brother's role turns out to be much bigger than expected! Tanemura is weaving such an intriguing plot here.
Many pages of this volume are about Sakura and Aoba's love and relationship. It's very refreshing that Tanemura is bringing the main couple together so early and instead of misunderstood messages and uncertain feelings, she's focusing on showing how the relationship develops and grows. And the characters actually say they love each other and talk about what is troubling them! Of course there is drama and miscommunication still but it's coming from a different angle and I like that. There were some slightly iffy lines about how women are fueled by talk of love and feelings but I'm not letting that bother me too much.
Aoba also finally grew a little on me. He's still one of my least favourite characters here but this time he showed he really cares for Sakura and that made me like him a little. Fujimurasaki is a character I thought to have sinister agenda in the volume two but now it seems maybe he doesn't?? What a mystery! I also liked seeing Kohaku and Hayate get some more background. I like the set of characters a lot and oh boy, we got new ones too! Can't wait to learn more about them.
The plot kicks in another gear when people from the Moon come to claim Sakura. I sense many conflicts coming, especially now that we know who that Enju person is who was introduced in volume 2. I'm really digging this story so far, I realised I haven't read this kind of fantasy shojo in a while and sort of forgot how much I like it. And what a cliffhanger! There's some quite heavy elements in the story (the way Enju became the way he is, for example) although this isn't a dark series per se. This volume still has some comedic moments but they are used well this time and don't ruin any dramatic moments.
Do I even dare to gush about the art again?? IT'S SO GORGEOUS!!! Every page has so much admire. No colour pages but even in black and white all the illustrations look amazing and the print quality is excellent.
Quality fantasy drama with the most beautiful art out there. If you haven't already started reading this series, do so ASAP!
Was gonna give this a 4 star but after seeing the beautifully drawn double spreads I just had to give it a 5.
We actually start getting a plot that was non existent in the first two volumes! I feel like the story wasn't really going anywhere beforehand, but now I'm really excited to see where the mangaka leads things. Also the new characters? I loved them so so much and even though we don't know much about them yet they seem super cool!
I really very super want the 4th volume now but I probably won't get it for a while since I have to order it online and it'll take a while to come🥲 but I'ma just fangirl over this series for the main time-
The greedy councilor gave into Lord Enju for promises of a higher rank, he then turns into a youko and attacks Sakura. Hayate returns back to his human form and helps Kohaku complete her mission. Lord Enju destroys the councilor. Sakura kills Oumi so she cannot bring destruction to anyone. Aoba and Sakura kiss and he gives her his soul symbol. The emperor, in order to subdue Sakura at an early age he took her older brother Kai and drowned him in a water chamber. It didn't kill him because he was immortal, so he would die again and again. Kai takes Sakura with him to the moon.

I thought I was going to really like this but unfortunately is not for me. There is a moon princess who has to fight the monsters and she is in love with an earth prince. Now her dead sibling is not dead anymore and created a girl who looks just like her and might be his lover. So, this is where I stop.
This was really similar to Sailor Moon but whereas I found Usagi endearing it, I find Sakura really annoying.

sakura and aoba's relationship is the cutesttt, she cares for him so much!! in this one we see her brother's story and aoba and sakura might be on good terms now (?) also, her brother just took her to the moon kingdom at the end of the volume!

I’m not sure what I think of this story. It seems all over the place.. And the main character and her love interest got over their hate so quickly and now are annoyingly in love lol. Why not build it up? It’s only vol 3??? Haha
I'm not sure I like how caught up in politics Aoba is. He seems to allow his political desires to effect how he treats Sakura and I'm just not a fan of that. The togu plays important role in helping these two as a couple and I'm loving Enju and Kai and how they are interfering and influencing the situation.
The side characters really are stellar in this and despite not being a total fan of the political side of the story am liking the back history we are being shown as we learn more about Sakura's brother. This kind of tragedy is so much better than star crossed lovers!
The art is still wowing and I pour over the frames and the way she lays out the frames and the characters within each frame. So well done! Probably why I keep reading.
BOTTOM LINE: I like this manga but I don't adore it.
I give this 4 stars. Lovely illustrations. I feel sorry for Sakura who gets kidnapped.Sigh. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spoiler Note to Self:Heian Era Princess Sakura(14yo,sis,Princess Kaguya's(moon princess)granddaughter,orphan,immortal(mixed blood),pal)+Prince Oura(Aoba,17yo,betrothed,nephew,transforms to wolf,pal2),Fujimurasaki(Togu(next emperor),uncle),Asagiri(mononoke(spirit),mini,snow spirit,blood cursed,companion pal),Priestess Byakuya (old,mononoke(spirit),immortal,pal),Kohaku (ninja,8th ninja village leaders daughter,pal2)+ Hayate(frog,human ninja, pal2),Oumi(Sakura's lady-in-waiting,minor rank noble,died),Enju(older bro Kai,immortal,insane due to repeated drowning), Maimai(immortal,Enju's team),Rurijo(Enju's team), Shuri(immortal, Enju's team,pal2), Ukyo(immortal,Enju's team).
Sakura, still grieving Oumi’s death, must fight the powerful youko of Uji. But she finds herself no match for the demon’s poisonous vapor. It’s time for Kohaku and Hayate—with a little help from the full moon—to step in.
My Thoughts:
Things take a bit of a turn here. Sakura isn't the only one from the moon around. At least she and Aoba are honest about their feelings now, but it seems even that was just a manipulation. Aoba doesn't seem to know anything about it, but Fujimurasaki does. What will he do?
We also learn something about Enju that I suspected ever since he was introduced. I feel for the guy. Something like that should never happen to someone. It looks like Sakura's being whisked away to the moon. What will you do, Aoba?!
More of a 3.5 than a 3, but not enough to round it up. It feels like Sakura Hime is finally finding is footing plotwise. It helps that we've dealt a huge character revelation that gives the series some serious depth, although some might see it as out of nowhere (and it pretty much was). Although one thing I'd ask is that we as readers see more of Sakura as this strong, independent, confident woman instead of other characters telling us she is. Also, less contrived romantic obstacles - but knowing Tanemura, those aren't disappearing any time soon.
The main arc of this series begins in this volume. We meet Enju and he quickly becomes our villain. However, by the end of this volume, we find out who he really is and how he became insane. This is where the story really takes off and we meet even more opponents that will challenge our favorite characters. At the end of this volume, Enju and Sakura fly away to the moon. When I first read this volume, I had given it 3 stars, but I'm upping it to 4.
This volume was super boring up until the last chapter! I already had figured out this twist before it was presented, but even so, I still got a little excited about it!
Now I am really pumped to see what happens next! I hope it keeps getting more intense and less lovey... this volume was too full of lovey dovey BS (I get it, it's a shojo... but there was a lot more depth to it the first two volumes)
