How to Study with Mind Maps: The Concise Learning Method for Students and Lifelong Learners (Expanded Edition)

Rate this book
How to Study with Mind Maps (HTSWMM) is a book by a mind mapper, who's also a decade-long college professor, on how to mind map and how to use mind maps to improve thinking and learning. Although substantive and comprehensive, the book is written in a light-hearted and conversational style with cartoons and inspiring quotes.

With the digital revolution happening all around us, including the classroom, it's just a matter of time before digital tools replace pen and paper note taking in classrooms. Discover why mind mapping and the Concise Learning Method (CLM) are setting a new paradigm in how students take notes, create and manage information and knowledge, learn, and collaborate.

The first part of the book discusses the foundation of mind maps as a learning tool, describes the benefits and uses of mind maps, and shows you how to draw mind maps, step-by-step, with a mind map diagram at each step. Even if you've never drawn a mind map before, you'll learn the basics and more in this one chapter that takes you through all the essentials of a mind mapping process. It also gives an overview of mind mapping programs and their features, and is accompanied by extensive resources on book's website.

The second part of the book shows you, step-by-step, how to use mind maps to improve your thinking and learning via CLM. With CLM, meaningful learning is achieved through a five-phase process that involves meaningfully organizing and connecting key concepts in a mind map, critically thinking, and asking key questions. CLM, already used successfully by thousands of students, will show you a better and more exciting way to learn.

HTSWMM is a condensed version of Concise Learn More & Score Higher in Less Time with Less Effort (hardcover). It's been especially formatted for Kindle and contains the entire first part of the original book (how to mind map and CLM). Due to Kindle's screen size limitations in displaying large mind maps, HTSWMM does not contain the second part of the book (the Skills of Success) and Appendices (find out how to get these Appendices as pdfs, including the CLM case study, at conciselearning.com/supplements).

As a bonus, each book also comes with a free 6-month trial of DropMind or ConceptDraw MindMap, two leading mind mapping programs on the market. To get your free access code, simply e-mail the author with your proof of book purchase and program preference.

The book offers a framework for using mind maps to enhance learning.

The main idea is to approach learning a new topic in 5 phases: Preview, Participate, Process, Practice and Produce, applying 4 steps in each phase: Identify key concepts, organize information and make connections, apply critical thinking and ask key questions. Mind maps offer a great support during this journey. I've recently started using mind maps intensively, so this framework is useful for me.

It all makes sense and I would've warmly recommended the book, if it wasn't for the poor writing style, superfluous phrases that are all over the book, quotes sprinkled on almost every page of the book and 90's style Clip Art imagery. I wouldn't make the effort of reading it all again.

Shallow and repetitious

I am a big fan of mind maps and use them frequently. I support the ideas promoted by this author but found his presentation lacking. Repetition is not necessarily a bad thing but repeating the same idea in consecutive sentences is too soon. One diagram was used five (6?) times. The constant references to what information could be found earlier and later in the book were distracting, that is why you have a table of contents. An additional proof reading might have found the compound sentence in chapter 3 where the second phrase contradicts the first. I also found the example describing a person with a mind map borderline insulting. People are far more complex than depicted, which might have been acceptable if you laid out a path to capture more of the person. It would have been better, given the focus on classroom learning, to pick an academic example. But kudos on championing a useful methodology.

3.5 stars. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the learning method, but the proof will be in the use of it. I'm not a student, so a lot of the book speaks around the uses I might have for it. But it does help make the uses of mind maps more focused. I read it for 'free' with kindle unlimited, if I had paid upfront, I'm not sure I would be as kind.
We'll see. I will revise, or make additions, as needed.

Good- but a little too repetitive

It’s a great book if you really don’t have any foundation for learning, however I found it to be too repetitive. Each chapter and section was similar to the last.

I appreciated the authors technique but I would have loved to see more examples.

Gonna give it a try

I am doing a couple of courses and am looking for a way of preparing for the exams more efficiently. This seems to make sense so will give it a go.

An open door to knowledge. After making mind maps, energy can flow in the right direction to help retain more information than usual.

Found this book by chance on Kindle Unlimited. Very good book, like a beefed up OODA loop. It only took me a few decades to truly appreciate mind maps.

I found this to be a good book, but I also thought the title was a little misleading. The real topic of this book is CLM, Concise Learning Method. Mind Maps are a key component to that topic.

As long as you know going in that the book is a tutorial for CLM and how to use mind maps in association with the method, it is a really useful book. Also, even if you don't choose to change the way you study, the coverage of mind maps is excellent.

At times, the text was somewhat repetitive. The same ideas were hammered home multiple times. I'm not sure if that was a flaw or was done on purpose. Repetition is key to learning as long as it is not mindless repetition.

So having sad all of that, the coverage of mind maps is the best I found anywhere. I am a long time user of mind maps and I find them to be highly useful. I have read other books and a lot of online material. Most of that content tells you what you can do, how to use the software, why mind maps are good, etc. None that I have found show you exactly how to make use of mind maps. I had to figure that myself.

I wish this book had been available years ago. It would have saved me a lot of pain on the learning curve. I don't use mind maps for studying. I use mind maps for brain storming, outlining, and for business uses. Even though this book is geared to students (and lifelong learners), I think the mind mapping portions of the book would be valuable to anyone using, or wanting to use, mind maps.

I do recommend this book.

I was so excited to receive a review copy of this book (*insert obligatory “I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review* disclaimer). I found out about mind maps about a year ago and fell in love immediately. As somebody who loves making lists and graphs, I’ve found mind maps to be a fun way to organize thoughts in a way that is visually pleasing. I wish this book had been available back when I was in college.
The author introduces the Concise Learning Method (CLM) in easy-to-understand language and explains how CLM can help readers learn in a new, more efficient way. The author ends each chapter with website and book recommendations of additional resources. The appendices arm the reader with a visual map worksheet and case study, which I appreciate. I also enjoyed the cute cartoon drawings.

I enjoyed this book very much, Mind Maps helped me when I was getting my Degree and from that time I use them quite often, So, seeing this book I instantly waned to read it. And I wasn't disappointed!
One other thing that made me like this book is the amount of quotes in it. I love quotes, so it was another added bonus to the reading process.
Also when you read Tony Bizan books on mind maps you are bombarded with "buy my products" slogan anywhere and everywhere and it is a huge turn-off. In this book there was nothing of such and it made reading and digestion of the material much much easier.
So, read it, use the techniques provided and you will see the difference straight away.

I read this book, mostly wanting to focus on Mind Maps (in an effort to teach my son how to do mind-mapping for high school notes). There was a lot of information on the Concise Learning Method, which was interesting, and possibly useful. I would have preferred more information on Mind Mapping, but there was sufficient stuff here for that purpose.

It's a relatively quick read, and I think it's worth the purchase.

Very interesting method for learning new things and studying for college classes. I think that I will add this to my lecture for freshmen on how to take effective notes as an option for them to consider. I think that it was a bit much to make a whole book for this, but overall the material is beneficial.

This was another Kindle purchase. It is really aimed at imparting study skills for college but I read it for information on mind mapping. There are some helpful tips on reviewing and learning materials and life long learning. Not a real 'page turner' but well organized and helpful for what it is.

Useful concepts but very repetitive. Maybe it was because the author is a teacher and know the value of repeating information with students. Or maybe it was a effort to stretch an article into a book.

Not really aimed at an audience of adult learners - there are better resources available for leaning mind mapping, including Buzan's own web site and the materials available there. The illustrations were distracting at best, insipid at worst.

An integrative way to organize information for study note. Note sure I would use it for all my notes, but I will try and integrate mind maps.

Easy to follow book. The Mind Mapping concept is something I have come to use later in my life, but wish I used when I was in college and high school. The book reenforced the concept and provided me other ideas and practices to improve my use of mind mapping.
