Studies have proven that music has an amazingly powerful effect on the intellectual and creative development of children. Simply listening to sounds, tones and rhythms can stimulate brain development, improve language skills, enhance awareness, reduce stress, and induce relaxation in children.
In this remarkable book, Don Campbell, author of the highly successful The Mozart Effect, shows how your children can tap into the healing, strengthening, and creative power of music. Each chapter is devoted to a particular age, from prenatal to school age, and parents and teachers alike can access excellent musical guides, practical suggestions, and games to play to stimulate children both intellectually and creatively. Follow these unique techniques, and your children will enjoy a healthier, more harmonious way of life.
This book reinforced to me how important music is during early childhood, and how sad it is that so many schools classify it as "frills." I also learned some science and theory behind things I guess I already knew intuitively. And I appreciated the specific song suggestions for various ages and activities, and suggestions of activities to do with my kids incorporating music, rhythm, and just having fun together.
I also like the way the book is organized with a chapter for each age group. It begins with pregnancy and ends with grade school.
My one complaint is that it was too long and a bit tedious to read. It could have been condensed to 1/2 to 2/3 the length. That being said, I liked it enough that I bought the Mozart Effect CD's for children. I think the subject matter is so important.
I actually still need to finish a few chapters, but it was overdue so I returned it. I learned a lot from this, it gave me many ideas of ways to use music with my children. I have been especially singing a lot more to my babies and they love it. I've been playing classical music for my kids to dance to and they love it. After returning the book to the library I read online some negative reviews about Campbell, saying he's making too many far fetched claims without scientific evidence to back it up. Maybe, maybe not. I was inspired. I love the organization of the book, by age of the child. I learned a lot about child development, things I'd learned way back in my psychology and biology classes but hadn't thought about for years. Also I loved the lists of songs to sing to your child by age group, I made copies. A wonderful resource. GREAT BOOK! I'll be checking it out again!
i found this book very informative. I bought it several years ago at a progressive book sale where the bookstore was dumping excess inventory. I read it and was surprised at how much a baby does learn before the age of 2. It also impressed me that their information was based in actual research and observation. I would highly recommend it for someone who has children or for someone who has a difficult time retaining information. According to the authors, 90% of what were learn through song is retained for the rest of your life. It is a book that teaches what effect music really has on our entire being and the effect that has on the rest of our lives.
Surprisingly, the book really isn't about Mozart. It's more about music in general and how the use of music/rhythm/beat can help children develop fully from the time they are in the womb to pre-teens. Lots of great ideas for incorporating music into the lives of children. Make sure you keep a pencil handy to jot down ideas. I didn't and now I need to re-read my favorite chapters!
I got bored about 1/4 of the way through this book and stopped. It's got interesting evidence but I like to think I'm a natural-enough of a mother to know instinctily that babies like music, nursery rhymes, rhythm, and dancing.
I have a great love of music and therefore was interested in learning about the effects of classical music on children. This book was interesting, but not as innovative as I expected.
This is really interesting on the effect music has for kids. It also goes through each age group and explains what is going on in their brain and why they are doing things. Very interesting!
