The book focuses on human needs and illustrates how one can apply motivational principles to their lives. A strong humanistic orientation with balanced coverage of behavioral, cognitive and physiological approaches is presented in the text.
"Motivation and Emotion", written by Johnmarshall Reeve, offers a comprehensive and updated approach to two fundamental concepts in psychology: motivation and emotion. A recognized expert in the field, Reeve presents the main issues related to motivation and emotion in a clear and accessible way, providing readers with a deep understanding of how these processes influence our behavior and psychological well-being.
One of the strengths of "Motivation and Emotion" is the rigor with which Reeve approaches the themes. The author explores classical and contemporary theories of motivation, such as self-regulation theory, self-determination theory, and expectancy-value theory. These theories are clearly presented and applied to real life situations, making it easy to understand the concepts and their relevance to our daily lives.
In addition, Reeve devotes special attention to the relationship between motivation and academic achievement, as well as motivation in the workplace. This practical approach provides readers with a useful perspective in understanding how motivation can affect different areas of our lives and how we can empower it effectively.
Regarding emotion, Reeve explores its nature, function and its different components, such as emotional expression and emotional regulation. The author gives us a clear vision of how emotions influence motivation and how emotional self-knowledge can be essential for our psychological well-being.
A prominent feature of this work is the inclusion of examples and case studies that illustrate how motivation and emotion are applied in real situations. This allows the reader to connect theory with practice, which is very useful for students, professionals and anyone interested in understanding and applying these concepts in their daily lives.
"Motivation and Emotion" by Johnmarshall Reeve is an essential work for those interested in delving into the concepts of motivation and emotion. Reeve offers a rigorous and up-to-date approach to these complex issues, presenting the theories and practical applications in different areas of our lives in a clear and accessible way. This book stands out for its combination of theory and practical examples, which facilitates the understanding and application of concepts to everyday situations. Without a doubt, "Motivation and Emotion" is a valuable read for those who wish to further explore the motivational and emotional processes that influence our behavior and psychological well-being.
Hated this book. It was course material for my psych subject, and this textbook made the subject difficult and boring. No pictures, no colour, no chapter review, no questions. Just the same text page after page after page. For the sake of future psych students, can someone please author a better Motivation & emotion textbook!
The past ten years have seen an explosion of useful research surrounding human motivation and emotion; new insights allow researchers to answer the perennial questions, including "What do people want?" and "Why do they want what they want?" By delving into the roots of motivation, the emotional processes at work, and the impacts on learning, performance, and well-being, this book provides a toolbox of practical interventions and approaches for use in a wide variety of settings.
I read this psychology textbook for fun. I enjoyed reading this. I only read the summaries at the end of every chapter since I’m not taking a test on this book or anything and I feel like I got a lot out of reading it. It has given me a lot to think about. Psychology is one of my favorite subjects to study and learn about. I think it’s interesting. One of the theories that was mentioned in here that I’m familiar with is cognitive dissonance theory. Cognitive dissonance is the mental discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs, values, or attitudes. People tend to seek consistency in their attitudes and perceptions, so this conflict causes unpleasant feelings of unease or discomfort. The inconsistency between what people believe and how they behave motivates them to engage in actions that will help minimize feelings of discomfort. People attempt to relieve this tension in different ways, such as by rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding new information.
This is one of my primary sources for my action research study on motivation in education. I read this book, parts of it, upon the recommendation of a friend pursuing a doctorate in education. After talking to my friend about my motivation research study, he suggested two books based on my lighter motivation reading interests, including Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Where Drive just touches the surface on the psychological needs of motivation, this book goes much deeper. As the author often references self-determination theory, naturally, that was the next book I read.
If you had to pick between this book and Self-Determination Theory: Basic Psychological Needs in Motivation, Development, and Wellness, I would pick Self-Determination Theory as that is more foundational.
Still, this has helped me a lot as I move through my own understanding of motivation.
DNF at 75% because I read this for my Motivation and Emotion class and did not need to read further for the class. I would still give this textbook a 2 out of 5 stars because the only thing it had going for it was an interesting topic. Other than that, it was a very boring textbook because every page was pretty much just straight text. There was hardly even any color to it! (I did read an online version, so maybe there was more color in the hard copy version). The lack of an engaging appearance is pretty disappointing since it’s a book about motivation.
Informative text - I think it could have been organized a bit better (it wasn't always clear how the chapter topics related back to motivation - the organization of content seemed a bit random), but informative overall.
It is good but outdated. There is a better book available in market which is in context of today's digital world and GENZ. I personally liked this book: https://a.co/d/bgoxEda
It's not a quick read, but appears to be a thorough, general basis to psychology.
The depth of the chapters is amazing. Only after reading 'Chapter 5 Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation' do I have the idea I'm actually starting to understand it. I've read about it before in multiple books, but only here it clicked.
'Chapter 6 Psychological Needs' gave me te context that I lacked in other sources. Autonomy, Competence and Relatedness. 1) The concept of Autonomy was clear to me from previous books. 2) But Competence was less clear to me. The explicit link with flow and structure was a connection I had not made. 3) Relatedness was a vague idea of which I mostly lacked understanding. This chapter made clear that mere interactions don't satisfy this need, but there needs to be perception of mutual caring about the other's needs. And the link with the internalization of values was very insightful, implicitly pointing back to the closer-to-intrinsic regulation styles. (identified and integrated regulation)
I read this book out of the desire to boost my own motivation in studying. Judge this review by the fact that I'm a complete novice in psychology, or specifically positive psychology in this case. That being said, the book seems to do everything: explain concepts (though some in this field don't have very good definitions), dispel myths, show criticism of the theories presented, exemplify how you can use this knowledge in your own life and relationships. All in all it seems like it's all you could want in a textbook about the topic at hand. Even though I'm left wanting more practical insight into how exactly to apply it to my day to day, this has a been great start. Naturally, it's already scheduled for a re-read.
Another semester finished, this was for one of my Motivation classes in Uni. I didn't much like this book., It was pretty dense for the class I had. I didn't much appreciated the class either but oh well, It was interesting enough.
