The "rules" of this fantasy world started to break down beyond a comfortable point for me, personally, in this book. I didn't feel quite oriented to the way things were supposed to be functioning; it took the fun out of reading it, because I couldn't anticipate the resolution to the mysterious malfunctions of the characters' powers. Rather, I felt dragged along, trying (and failing) to make sense of what was going on as it went past. Ultimately, it felt forced, rather than natural.
