Wayne Smallman I treat reading as a task, and as such, that places it within the remit of research. So yes, I highlight a lot, with notes explaining why.

︹ ︺︷ ︶ Job︸ ︹ ︺ ツ I still believe in the old school way
A book & a pencil ....love to keep it classic & original (^_^)

Nichole ~Bookaholic~ I highlight good quotes....the one's I want to remember...

message 4: by Makefetch (new)

Makefetch I highlight the passages that are so good that I want to remember them.

message 5: by April (new)

April I only highlight in my bible...not in my enjoyment reading! :) Unless there is something truly profound!

message 6: by Ulina (new)

Ulina I haven't read any novels on my Nook or Kindle app yet. They've all been tech pdfs. But I use a pencil to bracket or underline in my regular books and then put the page number in the back of the book.

I have used bookmarks though. The nook allows you to create bookmarks but i'm not sure if there is a limit.

message 7: by Alicia (last edited May 30, 2012 12:02pm) (new)

Alicia I was on the fence about whether to vote yes or no. On the one hand, I wouldn't say I "like" to highlight; I don't do it often. But on occasion, I will highlight a great quote, or if I'm proofreading a manuscript, I highlight errors.

Anyway, I voted yes.

message 8: by Elle (last edited May 30, 2012 12:20pm) (new)

Elle As a quote collector who reads mostly at night in bed, where a book and a pen is just not practical, the Kindle highlight feature has been a life saver :)

Definite yes!

message 9: by DarienMoya (new)

DarienMoya You should put up there, if you highlight sometimes.

message 10: by Aiesha (new)

Aiesha I do highlight and make notes sometimes (they should have had a 'sometimes' answer as an option) but it's usually to remember important characters or situations throughout the book. If a book has too many characters, they are hard to keep up with so I use the highlight feature so that I can refer back to see who they are and their significance in the book if their name happens to come up again later on! I hate that feeling of "wait, who is that again?" and having to try to find where I read about them earlier.

message 11: by Joy (new)

Joy I used to do it to correct grammar/spelling errors but there were always too many and I couldn't keep up!

message 12: by Moloch (new)

Moloch Why ask only e-readers users? You can highlight a paper book too! And my answer is: no, I don't do it.

message 13: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I highlight occasionally but I wouldn't say "I like to highlight". It is mostly just in an anthology, especially where I'm skipping around, to mark titles.

message 14: by Martha (new)

Martha D I highlight, because I usually make the notes and the marks in the book to help with my writing of the review :)

message 15: by Tabitha (new)

Tabitha Ormiston-Smith I was brought up as a child not to scribble in my books and that has carried over to the kindle.

message 16: by Erica (new)

Erica I highlight only for writing notes and feelings as I am reading the ebook upload it on my progress on goodreads and eventually delete the book out of my ereader

message 17: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I only highlight when i find a quote I really like

message 18: by Djrmel (new)

Djrmel I chose "other" because while I do highlight passages that I want to remember if I write a review, I can't really say I "like" to highlight. It's just one of the benefits of using an ereader, but I could live without it.

message 19: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I usually share good quotes i like on facebook. So this highlights it anyway

message 20: by Alysha (new)

Alysha Ellis I read fiction so I'm not sure highlighting is relevant for me.

message 21: by wally (new)

wally i highlight when i am enlightened & baffled....often.

message 22: by Lila (new)

Lila Cyclist i highligt in some parts, but not too often. But, i never open my highlighted parts. Lol

message 23: by [deleted user] (last edited May 31, 2012 04:28am) (new)

I only highlight by accident - then I can't figure out how to remove the highlighting so in it stays!

message 24: by Dany (new)

Dany Duane wrote: "I only highlight by accident - then I can't figure out how to remove the highlighting so in it stays!"lol. I constantly turn pages by accident.
I highlight so many things sometimes that I need highlights for my highlights. I feel like I'm scrolling through another novel looking through my notations.

message 25: by Kim (new)

Kim Hathorn For textbooks or other references for schoolwork--yes; for pleasure reading--no.

message 26: by Jael (new)

Jael If I did have an Ereader/If I wanted to have an Ereader Than yes I would Highlight favorite passages. (But there is no answer for that so I was torn between "I don't have one" and "other" go figure)

message 27: by Pam (new)

Pam Belong to two book clubs, and when I have to lead the discussion of the book, I need to highlight e-books, as well as regular books.

message 28: by Caitlyn (new)

Caitlyn Santi I highlight all my favorite passages when I read them, because if I don't then I forget where they are and my kindle makes it so easy for me to find all my highlights in a book!!! For example when I just read Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini I ended up with 44 highlights! I hate putting any markings in my print books, so when I read a print copy I really end up missing my highlight feature a lot.

message 29: by Laura (new)

Laura I don't exactly have an e reader but can read e books through amazon cloud which offers highlighting. When I am reading some books with it I highlight some amazing passage I want to remember, and I love how I can find it again. That said, I still prefer physical books.

message 30: by Rivqah (last edited May 31, 2012 07:46pm) (new)

Rivqah I makes it more time-efficient. I can more quickly return to what was important or to an exceptionally beautiful or inspiring passage that I want to re-read later.

message 31: by Lily (new)

Lily I can't imagine not highlighting, ebook or physical copy. (Yes, my books will never be good on the resale market -- unless I become famous, which isn't going to happen! :D )

message 32: by Annie (new)

Annie Brewer But I should highlight...I just forget to.

message 33: by Janina (new)

Janina I highlight the quotes that I like. Sometimes, I include some thoughts regarding this quote.

But with physical books... not really. I don't want to ruin the beautiful pages with my dirty handwriting. :( Sometimes, I use sticky notes but most of the time I just keep it to myself. A bad habit, I know.

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I sometimes highlight especially for book club. If it's something I want to discuss, I will highlight it.

message 35: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Mcelweenie I only highlight passages that stand out to me. The ones that make me stop and read them again, and that I'd like to share with others or to remember where they are when I want to experience them again.

message 36: by Angie (new)

Angie I also enjoy looking at Popular Highlights to see what other readers highlight.
However, here is a question for others: I am having continual problems with my Kindle freezing up for 30 seconds to a minute when I highlight or make marginal notes. It does not do it ALL the time but at least half the time. Amazon does not seem to know what is wrong. Does anyone else have this problem?

message 37: by Luisfius (new)

Luisfius If there is a passage that is absolutely ridiculous, or hilarious and I want to show it to someone, yeah. So far I've only highlighted two things though.

message 38: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Nope - unless it's for work/research, I don't highlight. And if I do, it's in the fluorescent yellow highlighter ONLY.

message 39: by Ginger (new)

Ginger I highlight when a phrase or a particular passage really speaks to me.

message 40: by Ginger (new)

Ginger Angie wrote: "I also enjoy looking at Popular Highlights to see what other readers highlight.

Angie, I have the same problem. It doesn't do it all the time, just once in awhile.

message 41: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I love to highlight on my kindle; then I can share it on facebook. also I love to use it to remember passages from the book!!!

message 42: by V (last edited Jun 02, 2012 10:00pm) (new)

V I never did this with real books, but I'm somewhat addicted to it with my kindle.

I like going back and reading over my highlights later - it brings me back to the mindset I had while first reading the passages I thought were important for one reason or another.

Popular highlights are also awesome, and I'm always disappointed when a book isn't notable to have them. (Which is often, with what I read.)

message 43: by 'SYM (new)

'SYM I omly highlight lines from poems

message 44: by Krysti (new)

Krysti I rarely highlight - on occasion, if I see a great quote, I will highlight.

message 45: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Kelly Yes I highlight. Especially favourite quotes. I like to reuse sometimes in my blog reviews.

message 46: by Jeremy (new)

Jeremy E-Readers are the latest yuppie fad. No thanks.

message 47: by Trixie (new)

Trixie Fontaine Sometimes the thing that pushes me over the edge into buying a book instead of just enjoying the sample as far as it takes me is the COMPULSION to highlight (only functions on bought books, not samples).

message 48: by V (new)

V Trixie wrote: "Sometimes the thing that pushes me over the edge into buying a book instead of just enjoying the sample as far as it takes me is the COMPULSION to highlight (only functions on bought books, not sam..."
Haha, that's happened to me a few times!

message 49: by Katja (new)

Katja I do highlight, but usually I highlight the typos. :D

message 50: by Kasia (new)

Kasia No, I write it down in my little reporter Moleskine, writing something down makes it easier to remember, otherwise there is very little contact with the fascinating through/part other than reading it and marking it with my finger.
