The File: A Personal History

When Timothy Garton Ash graduated from Oxford in 1978, he went to live in Berlin, ostensibly to research and write about Nazism. But once there, he gradually immersed himself in a study of the repressive political culture of East Germany. As if to return the favor, that culture--in the form of the dreaded East German secret police, the "Stasi"--secretly began studying him. As was Stasi's practice, over the years its study produced a considerable paper trail. After the fall of the East German communist regime, a government apparatus was established to allow those targeted to see their Stasi files, and Garton Ash discovered and pored over his. He then set about to interview the people who made this gross intrusion possible, the several case officers, and the numerous regular-citizen informers. The result is nothing short of a journey into the darkest recesses of the totalitarian mind, taking its place honorably alongside 1984 and Darkness at Noon.

Timothy Garton Ash CMG FRSA is a British historian, author and commentator. He is Professor of European Studies at Oxford University. Much of his work has been concerned with the late modern and contemporary history of Central and Eastern Europe.

پرونده؛ یک سرگذشت شخصی.
کتابی از یک تاریخ‌نگار و خبرنگار انگلیسی که ضمن مطالعه و بررسی پرونده‌ای که اشتازی، یکی از عظیم‌ترین دستگاه‌های پلیس مخفی در تاریخ، از او گردآوری کرده، نگاهی گذرا هم به تاریخ آن زمان اروپا انداخته و بعد با مواجهه با مأمورانی که روی پرونده کار می‌کردن سعی در کشف انگیزه‌های فردی که موجب چنین شری شدن کرده.
مطالعه این کتاب برای من خیلی اتفاقی مقارن شد با مطالعه کتاب "ابتذال شر" آرنت و هر دوی این کتاب‌ها موضوعی همانند رو در دو برهه تاریخی در یک جغرافیا دنبال می‌کنن؛ یکی به دنبال واکاوی شر در دستگاه حزب نازی و یکی در دستگاه اشتازی که کارکنانش رو فرزندان نازیسم تشکیل می‌دادن.
"آنچه اینجا، در این پرونده‌ها، دستگیرتان می‌شود این است که شرایط تا چه حد می‌تواند اعمالتان را تحت تاثیر قرار دهد. اینکه قلب آدمی تا چه اندازه تحمل درد و رنج‌هایی را دارد که قانون یا پادشاه مسبب یا درمانگرش است. آنچه دستگیرتان می‌شود بیشتر ضعف انسانی است تا خباثت وجودی-مجموعه‌ای گسترده از ضعف انسانی. وقتی با افرادی که درگیر ماجرا بوده‌اند صحبت می‌کنید آنچه می‌فهمید بیشتر ظرفیت تمام‌نشدنی انسان در خودفریبی است تا فریبکاری عمدی. طی تحقیقاتم هرگز با یک نفر که سرشتی کاملا شیطانی داشته باشد برخورد نکردم؛ ولی همگی‌شان انسان‌هایی ضعیف بودند که شخصیتشان متاثر از موقعیت، با خودفریبی شکل گرفته بود: انسانی زیادی انسانی؛ گرچه حاصل اعمالشان شری عظیم بود."
