The Fragile Fall

Rate this book
He had destroyed everything in his life and now he’s left with nothing.

Tragedy colored every part of Will Mathers life, shattered the sheltered bubble his parents had created, left him broken and alone. And it was all his fault. Guilt consumed him.

Ryanne Morgan was an expert at keeping all the balls in the air, her life a carefully planned balancing act held together with determination and chewed up bits of bubble gum. She didn’t have time for anything—especially love.

When an enigmatic boy moved in next door, she couldn’t deny the pull she felt toward him. She became the push to his pull … the want to his need … the light to his dark. And for the first time in a long time, Will could see past the blackness. Finally … finally, he wasn’t alone.

But the ever present guilt clawed at Will, robbing him of his newfound peace. The memories haunted him, so consuming that even Ryanne couldn’t light his way.

Guilt was the thief of happiness and shame had a way of twisting the knife deeper, proving the only way to go was down. Will was fragile and all he had left to do was fall.

The prologue had me. It was heartwrenching and it had me thinking. I was definitely sucked it. Will is a seventeen year old whose life is turned upside down one tragic day. He then goes to live with his aunt Liv. Will is shy, silent, withdrawn sort of person, without much friends. He gets closer to his neighbors, Ryanne and Jax, and he ends up falling in love with Ryanne.

This story is about heartbreak, picking up the pieces of your life and moving on. It's definitely not an easy book to read. It was emotionally draining and pretty intense for a young adult book. To deal with the tragedy, Will started to do some hurtful things to himself, but with the love of those around him he eventually found the strength to cope, heal and move on.

For me, there wasn't much romance and I couldn't really seem to grasp Will and Ryannes relationship. They fell hard for each other quickly in the story. It was almost like a insta-love which I'm not fond of. Also, Ryanne's brother Jax was a bit annoying at times. There were times when the story fell flat, but overall this is not an entertaining read but an emotional one. It's angst-filled, intense, heavy and in some ways thought provoking.

“God was punishing me for being a bad son.”

This was an okay YA contemporary romance, although it was a little predictable.

Will had obviously lived through a traumatic experience, and when the full truth was revealed it was easy to see why he blamed himself for his parent’s deaths. That being said, I didn’t connect very well with these characters at all really, and I didn’t feel enough for them to be bothered when things went wrong.

The storyline in this was about Will’s new life after his parent’s deaths, and the next door neighbours Jax and Ryanne who try to pull him out of his shell. We got a romance happening between Will and Ryanne, and Jax played the role of protective younger brother. We did get a bit of a storyline about Ryanne and Jax’s mother, and we also got a self-harm storyline.

The ending to this was okay, and things seemed to be wrapped up satisfactorily enough.

I think that being a beta reader means that I really can't review this yet as it's not truly finished. I would certainly be biased as this is something I've watched my talented wife pour herself into for months now. I have read the book twice now and probably will another 2-3 times as revisions come.

I merely, and perhaps selfishly, wanted to be the first person to mark this book as 'read' on Goodreads. :)

Love the sound of this and the cover is stunning!!

I’ve destroyed everything in my life and now I’m left with nothing.

Alone and scared.
Broken and shattered.
But I’ve found a way to deal with it.
Instead of all the pain being on the inside, I make the outside ache too. Anything to make it easier to breathe.
Until one beautiful morning when I look outside and see her.

She tries to help me…
But I’m lost.

And I’m not sure I can ever be found.

How does someone overcome their guilt when they know it’s their own rebellion that caused the loss of their family & everything they’ve ever known? This is the story of Will and his struggle to keep his guilt from shattering his already fragile existence. He’s recently moved in with his aunt and she tries to get him to go out; to make friends and meet people, believing it will help him begin to heal. But Will believes he isn’t ready yet, it takes all his strength to wake each morning and go through the motions. His guilt keeps him completely sealed off from the outside world. I couldn’t help but feel for Will, with all the pain he’s going through I just wanted to step in and rescue him myself! It’s not often that an author writes a story like this, told through the eyes of a teenage boy; I found this so refreshing!

One day, while looking out his bedroom window Will spots a girl and some of her friends by their pool. She looks up and sees Will watching her and instantly you can feel the pull between these two characters. A few minutes later there’s a knock at Will’s front door……..it’s her, Ryanne and she’s come to invite him over. You expect him to say no………. heck, he expects himself to say no! But that pull…….. he feels it and he know she feels it and it’s enough to get him to take his first tentative steps back into the real world.

As Will slowly starts coming back to life he forms a deep connection with Ryanne and her brother Jax, they become the best friends he’s never had. Theirs hasn’t been an easy life either; abandoned by their mom when they were little and having a dad that is never around, Ryanne had to step in and become a mom to Jax. These two have an unbreakable bond and it was heartwarming to see how they immediately took Will in and enfolded him into their lives. Ryanne is Will’s first real love and he really shows her what it’s like to be adored, purely and honestly. I loved that they gave to each other what each needed the most! Eventually, Jax begins to see that Will’s still battling some pretty strong demons; he tries to be there for him as much as he can but it’s not enough to keep Will from finding his own ways to cope with his grief.

The Fragile Fall is a beautiful story about struggling to survive ones grief and learning to overcome such loss. This story, many times, brought tears to my eyes! Kristy Love writes in such a way that I couldn’t help but feel what Will felt, each time he cried and struggled and ached…….. it just gutted me. This is a story about one boy’s journey towards redemption, it’s one I believe all teens can and will relate too and I loved it! Highly recommend for teens and YA fans.

Thank you to Kristy Love and NetGalley for providing me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

This book was emotional, I can't get into words of how I felt. Because I just felt broken. I don't even know where to start or even know how to live if I lost everyone I cared about. The Hero is strong than I am because I sobbed while reading this book.

And I always say if a story doesn't make you cry or even laugh/happy than it's not that good of a book. And it was a good book a beautiful written debut story I just didn't connect to it as much as I would love to. I would have loved to saw more.

I disliked Ryanne. Maybe because me and her are so totally opposite of each other. This is one of a few books that I felt a connect pole between the hero and it's rare for me. But I found that the author Showcased a lot and she is one to look out for. So I do highly recommend this book

Wow. This is a brilliantly written debut novel that will stay with me for a long time.

From the beginning this author will grab your attention. Will made one decision and that decision blew his life apart. My heart ached so much for Will. Just when he couldn't get any lower he meets Jax and Ryanne.

This is a really beautifully written and emotional story. It's a real emotional rollercoaster. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.

(I received a copy from Netgalley, In exchange for an honest review.)

I felt quite sorry for the characters in this at points, but I can't really say I liked them.

This wasn't a bad read, but unfortunately, it didn't hold my interest very well. I felt quite bored in areas, and It dragged slightly because of it.

Overall, Not a bad read, but not one for me.

“The Fragile Fall” by Kristy Love
5 out of 5 stars

This is a beautiful and moving story. If you don’t read anything else I wanted to get that out first. So, I’d love for you to read on but quite simply this gets a huge ‘yes’ from me on the ‘should I buy this’ question.

Will is lost and drowning in a sea of guilt. His life has been upended and the life he once lived is gone in a moment that continues to haunt him. After months of self-imposed isolation his neighbors thrust themselves on him and force him to start the hard task of living again. Can Jax and Ryanne help him heal or will the weight of his guilt be too much for him to bear?

I love to connect with the characters I read...in fact, I don’t enjoy books where I can’t find that connection. I absolutely loved being in Will’s head. It was intense, and hard, and sometimes uncomfortable but it was so worth it. I know that you are thinking that being uncomfortable doesn’t sound great but it is. I ached with him, and I cried with him, and I struggled as he struggled, but when he was triumphant I soared. As he found redemption, I felt renewed. His journey was one I was better off for having been on and I am so happy I was given the opportunity to read his book.

Jax and Ryanne are support personified. I’m not sure there are two better friends in existence and Will’s life is made much more colorful by their presence. I love that they aren’t perfect and it’s in their flaws that Will is able to see a hope for himself. They have their own little side story that makes them human and gives them each deeper characterization that is often missing from the supporting cast. Love really put a lot of thought into her characters and it really shines through in the story.

As for the writing itself, I couldn’t put the book down. I started it around 12:30 a.m. with the intention of reading a chapter or two and read the last page around 3:00 a.m. Love writes with an intensity that I haven’t come across before and I was completely wrapped up in the story. I’m not entirely sure that my house couldn’t have burned down around me without me even noticing. Her words flow effortlessly and the plot builds toward a beautiful ending. It’s a bit like listening to a symphony and I swear I could hear the clash of the cymbals as the climax of the story hit.

This one has made my highly recommend and must read lists. You will definitely not regret this one. Great job to Kristy Love and I look forward to reading more from her.

Ok... I have to start off by saying that I liked this book.. I felt the author did a good job... But, I just can't help but feel like something was missing...

This is the authors first book. And I must say I was pleasantly surprised! I felt she did a good job with the topic she wrote about.
It was a pretty heavy topic. I know a little about it.
But, having read other books on this topic I thought she did a good job.

The story starts off with the accident. You don't really know the full story until you read further into the book. But... Right from the start you feel Will's pain and all the turmoil that is going on in his head.

We get introduced to his aunt and her neighbors Jax & Ryanne. Jax & Will are the same age 17. & Ryanne is two years older than them.

I have to be honest here... I connected more to Will's story. Than I did to the whole "love" story line going on in this book.

Will & Ryanne relationship/ friendship in the beginning was kind of weird to me.
Ryanne was only 2 yrs older than Will. But, she acted much older. She flipped a lot on how she acted. It was hard for me to get into them as a couple. Because once I started to feel..their connection...
She flipped a switch and acted like she was his mother. Giving advice & always bringing up his past.
I don't know if the author intended that. But that's the way I took it.

I wanted to feel that undying need & want. Not, the whole mother act. By the time they become a couple... I just felt it was to late. But... They had their sexy moments.

Also too... I wasn't really feeling Jax at all. I found him to be kind of annoying.
The way Jax acted about his sister & Will seemed weird to me too.
Ryanne... "mother figure to her brother" had to get her brothers approval about seeing Will. Just didn't mix well in the story for me. It Seemed really out of place for her character in this book.
And seriously... Who is Jax anyway to tell people who they can & can't talk to.

Overall... This was an ok read. There were some grammar/consistency issues. I think a final sweep from an editor would have helped. Because they were really minor fixes that needed to be made in this book. I liked the flow of the book. And despite the heavy topic I thought the author did a really good job conveying what Will was going through. And how he dealt with it.

What a beautiful debut novel from Kristy Love! Let me tell you, she sucked me in from the very beginning and never let me go.

The prologue completely gutted me. Kristy painted such a vivid picture, I felt as if I was actually there. I could feel the bite of the cold air, I could here the sharp sounds of bending metal … I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll leave it at that!

Will has suffered terrible tragedy in his short life, and it takes tremendous effort to just wake up everyday and function. He goes through the motions, literally just existing … until he meets Ryanne.

My heart hurt for the pain that Will has endured, and I wanted so badly for him to find peace. I fell in love with him from the very beginning.

Ryanne was a breath of fresh air. She has a great deal of responsibility laid on her shoulders, and she takes it all in stride. She has a quiet strength about her that I love.

There are so many things that I love about this book. One of the things that really stood out for me is that this is not a story where the couple meets and all their wounds are magically healed. While that may seem sweet and romantic, it’s just not real life. Problems don’t magically disappear when a person falls in love. Will has real problems to deal with, and Kristy did a great job of telling his journey to recovery.

Great job, Kristy Love! I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Will made one decision, one decision that took his life and shattered it into floating pieces... Ryanne and Jax know all to well how life can be difficult and lonely. How these three met was fate. Fate sometimes is disguised as ugly, taking time to find the glowing light of it.... When will that light hit them, for sure its a battle...

Devestation.....Nightmares.... Love..... Family.....Friendship.... strength.... Courage...... Secrets.....Time....Forgivness... Will they get through it?

Emotionally sweet and sexy are words that come to mind. Kristy Love soared high with her debut. Storytelling is definitely a natural gift she was given. Going into this story I had no idea what to expect, and was I surprised! I was glued from the first page all the way to the last. This was a story line that I have yet to experience. Such a hard subject to write about was shared so delicately and magically making me feel emotion that I do love when reading a story. It was all there angst, romance, humor, and a little mystery having you questing on what happened? I loved taking the journey with Will, Ryanne and Jax. I also loved Aunt Liv too! I strongly recommend Kristy love's 5 star read and can't wait to read the next journey she sends us on!

This was an amazing story of a young man that has a tragedy happen in his life that he needs to overcome. He holds in so much guilt that he fears getting to know others because he's afraid that they too will leave him.

Can his new neighbors Jax and Ryanne help him overcome his fears or push him over the edge?

Highly recommend!
I read it in less than 24 hours that's how hooked I was!

I will start this off by saying that I started this series backwards. Its because I loved book two so much, I needed to go back to book one to Ryanne and Will’s story. If I thought I knew their story, I was wrong. I am so glad I decided to read it. It wasn’t until now that I truly understood the depth of their love and all it overcame.

“I ran from all the reminders that showed me everything I couldn’t have because of how broken I was.”

One decision shatter’s the life of seventeen year old Will. Everything he knows and loves is no more. Will grew up with overbearing parents that protected him from everything. Until one night they could not. Tragedy causes Will to leave his home and live with his Aunt. Will is broken by guilt and cannot forgive himself. His heart and soul is dark. Shattered into pieces. Until Ryanne comes in with her light. She threatens his darkness. She gives him hope of the possibility of happiness, life, and even love.

“His eyes were like a gentle touch that stayed on my skin even after he looked away. I could feel him when he was in the same room, even if I wasn’t looking at him.”

The moment Will sees Ryanne, his breath stops. And I felt it. The author puts you in that moment. The moment when Will’s soul awakens from the darkness. However, he is hesitant. Not sure how to make friends as guilt makes him believes he's not worthy of living again.. But Ryanne’s spirit draws him in and he wants nothing more than to be around her. Everyday Will comes out of his shell with the new found friendship in Ryanne and her brother Jax. They soon become inseparable. There is a bond between the three of them. There is also an underlying attraction between Will and Ryanne that they both try to avoid. Will believes he’s too broken. While Ryanne does not want to shatter his already broken pieces. Little do they know that life becomes more bearable when they are together.

“...but it wasn’t something that blossomed with time. It was swift and all-encompassing. And irreversible.”

When the pain becomes too much to deal with. When it hurts to breathe. Will no longer can hold on. He tumbles back into the darkness. The pain and the guilt overwhelms him. The author did an exceptional job on this sensitive and relevant subject. My heart went out to Will and his pain. And anyone that has to go through what he went through. But I was also in awe of his strength. It reminds us that the fall is not what matters, it’s what happens when you get up. And Will? He got up.

“You aren’t broken, Will. You are a survivor.”

This was not an easy story in the sense that pain, guilt, and even lies plague these characters lives. But what makes it worth it is their journey. The lives of Will and Ryanne are shattered because of their circumstances. But their love never faltered in these times. If anything their love and admiration for each other grew stronger though the darkness. These two have to trudge through some obstacles. Their love is tested and their foundation is shaken to its core. But their love always remained.

“Thank you for saving me, Ry. Thank you for loving me even when I was too broken to love you back.”

Can we talk about the that Prologue?! Hello Prologue! What a powerful way to start a book. And the rest of the story? This author’s words gave me LIFE. Every one of her words? I felt. Her words speak to your heart. The flashbacks, the writing style, and the development of the story and it’s characters was absolutely brilliant in it’s execution. This author has effortlessly written a story on loss, forgiveness, acceptance, and love. Ryanne and Will are two broken and beautiful human beings. It hurt to live until they met each other. Their souls became tethered the moment they meet. That’s the depth of their love.

“You aren’t numb. You feel everything when you’re with me. That’s why you’re running. You’re afraid to feel how good this is, how right.”

I think if you get put all the words of the most beautiful love songs together they would only describe a fraction of the love between Ryanne and Will. An entire week later my heart swells over the emotions of this story. I still get chills just thinking about it. I was emotionally overwhelmed in the best way possible. My heart and mind were consumed from the moment I started to the very last page. The characters stole my heart. I lived their story. The Fragile Fall is a powerful, poignant, and thought provoking story that will simply stay with me for a long time to come. Words cannot express how excited I am for the rest of this series and what is to come from this author.

4 Star Review by Jen Skewes

When I read the synopsis for this book I knew that it would be an emotional read and would deal with some tough issues. But I don’t think I was prepared for how emotional it was at times and the deeper issues that were explored in this book. This book is certainly emotional and heart breaking but also beautifully written. But at the same time it isn’t one of those books where the storyline is completely surrounded by heartache. It is a story about guilt and how you move on from it but it is also about survival. How a young boy learns to move on from the tragedy that happened in his life and how to survive through all of the pain and guilt. But it is also a love story and a wonderful story about friendship.

Will, oh how that boy just captured my heart. He was basically sheltered by his parents, being home schooled, never allowed to go out with anyone and therefore really had no friends. He didn’t get to experience the world outside of his home like most children do. As a teenager he made one bad decision that cost him everything. He lost his parents in a tragic accident and has not been the same since. He moved away from the place he called home to go live with his Aunt. He is still trying to deal with the loss of his parents and tries sheltering himself from the outside world. His aunt encourages him to go out, to meet the neighbors, but for Will, staying in his room seems like a better plan. Until one day he looks out the window and sees her.

Ryanne and her brother Jax live next door to Will and his aunt. They quickly become friends with Will, but the feelings between him and Ryanne seem to be more than just friends. But Jax and Will become best friends and Jax may have issues with is sister dating his best friend. Honestly Jax and Ryanne were exactly what Will needed. They knew a part of what had happened and knew he was grieving. Jax was very protective of him and did not want to see him get hurt. He is already going through enough pain. They were amazing friends who were very supportive of Will. Ryanne and Will eventually give into their feelings and Jax sees that maybe he was wrong. But no matter how happy Will may seem with Ryanne and Jax as his best friend, he is still grieving and starts to find away to cope with that grief.

Will is so broken inside from what happened to his parents. His coping mechanism seems to help with the pain, making him feel numb but there comes a point where you realize that the way you cope with life’s curveballs may not be the best way. And you realize that things are far worse than you thought and you need help. Will has a tough road ahead of him. He needs to learn to heal. But he also needs to learn to lean on the people that care about him the most. Ryanne and Jax want to protect him, support him and love him. They want to help him move on, but they cannot do that if he does not let them. Will Will be able to move on from the pain and the guilt of losing his parents, and learn to be happy and let people in?

This book is an emotional one and as mentioned earlier does deal with some deep issues. Ryanne and Jax were two supporting characters that I loved. They have their own family issues with a father who is never home and a mother who left them a long time ago. But they have a great relationship with each other and together they are exactly what Will needs. Will had lived such a sheltered life that love and friendship is something that seems so foreign to him. The one friend he did have ended up betraying him. So letting Ryane and Jax is hard for Will but slowly he sees how much they love him and vice versa. He has an amazing support team. His aunt is young and single and never had to take care of anyone before. But the amount of love that she has for Will is evident in her actions. She wants him to have a life and find friends but she is also protective of him. She loved him unconditionally and wants the best for him.

The Fragile Fall was a beautifully written story and one that got me from the very beginning. I felt the emotions that these characters felt. I felt the pain right along with Will. I wanted to be able to just hug him and tell him that it would be ok. A job well done by Kristy Love. I think my only issue is that I would have loved to go a little further into Jax and Ryanne’s family issues but I am hoping that we get some of that in Jax’s book. I look forward to reading more from this author.

How do you ever overcome the tragic night that shattered your life and changed your world forever? Even worse, how do you overcome the guilt you feel knowing that your rebellion is what caused you to lose your family? This is what Will is going to have to deal with. Growing up with strict, over protective parents, he finds himself and orphan and now living with his Aunt Liv whom he doesn’t really know. He goes day to day playing video games and playing music to drown out the silence of being alone while his aunt works. One day he noticed the neighbor girl at the pool and he begins to feel some emotions. Fear and panic come quickly when there is a knock on the door and he prepares for the beautiful girl to yell at him for staring. What he didn’t expect is to be opening the door to his first true love.
Ryanne isn’t immune to pain and heartache. Raising her brother she has her own baggage to deal with but she keeps the spirited attitude that brought her over to Will and asked him to join her at the pool. Jax her brother and Will develop a great friendship regardless of Will’s fears to allow anyone in his life. When Ryanne and Will begin to develop loving feelings she finds that she is going to have to make a choice in life. Should she allow herself the chance to see if Will and her have a future and risk it won’t work out, putting Jax in the middle or does she resign herself to loving Will from a far so the boys can have the bond they so need in life. Putting her brother first has always been her plan in life.
True love between Ryanne and Will won’t fix his issues. Plagued with the pain and agony that continues to occur every day she has to prove to him that she is there for him. The road isn’t going to be short nor is it going to be easy but the three are committed to each other to make it to the end.
What I loved about this story is how each give to the other what they need. Ryanne is a natural born nurturer with the loyalty to those she loves that can’t be broken. Jax needs Will as much as Will needs him and they forge a friendship that not only is supportive but life giving. I adore how the author didn’t just rush the story that true love and friendship fixes every problem, but it sure helps the painful steps involved in freeing yourself from the guilt and pain Will carries with him.
If you want an emotional story that will grab your heart and hold your feelings this is your book. It felt like one of the purest stories I have read in a long time with enough reality to keep it believable with an abundance of hope in overcoming the torment life brings. Will has to learn that not ever choice he makes in life will result in the same horrific event and that everyone needs others in order to survive. We watch him come from an isolated home to a reinforced cocoon that he feels he deserves to opening up his heart and mind to believe he deserves love and friendships. He has to realize that it is ok to continue to live and be happy and that is what Ryanne and Jax intend to do for him.

This is a beautifully written story of love, loss, and survival. If you are sensitive to mental health issues, proceed with caution as Will's mental health and his inability to cope with the guilt he feels surrounding his parents' death is one of the primary subjects of The Fragile Fall. Unfortunately, Will’s coping mechanisms are dangerous and all too common, especially for teens his age. If you can read such subjects, then I believe you'll enjoy this book as Ms. Love does an excellent job in treating the issue with care, sensitivity, and real-world knowledge.

I absolutely adored Will’s character. As his story progresses, you learn that he grew up in a very sheltered environment, being homeschooled by his mother and had high expectations placed on his behavior and future by his parents due to their highly religious nature. When his parents are killed in a car accident, he goes to live with his aunt, where after months of avoiding everyone other than his aunt, he befriends the next-door neighbors, Ry and Jax. I enjoyed watching the relationships develop between Will and Jax (best friends) and Ry and Will (romantic) – the camaraderie between the boys was entertaining, while I liked that the author didn’t feel the need to rush Ry and Will into a physical relationship, allowing them to become friends LONG before anything intimate occurs between them. While the reader is aware of Will’s situation from the start, it takes a while before we learn how bad Ry and Jax’s family situation is. Despite all that Will struggles through, I enjoyed watching his personal growth, especially once he is hospitalized.

As these three teens learn to deal with all the blows that life deals them, both privately and with one another’s support, the reader learns that Will, Ry and Jax are survivors. And it is through the family they create with one another that they find the love they have been missing and the acceptance they needed so badly. The Fragile Fall is a wonderfully written story that will be an emotionally draining read for many, but so worth it – at least it was for me. I look forward to reading this book again and more of Ms. Love’s writing.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

After seeing this beautiful book cover and reading the emotive synopsis, I couldn’t wait to start reading this story. The author is unknown to me and I wasn’t sure what to expect but what I found was a heartfelt and painful story about loss, self-harming and ultimately hitting rock bottom before finding peace.

The focus of the story is on Will who is grieving the loss of his parents and trying to find himself in a new world outside of their protection. Moving to live with his Aunt, Will meets her neighbours, Ryanne and her brother Jax, and together they slowly try to support Will and to help him to heal from the pain that he is feeling. What they weren’t prepared for was the depth of depression that Will has spiralled into and keeping hidden from them as well as his Aunt. Rejection hits him hard and when he thinks everyone is against him is when this story really becomes one of survival.

The balance between the three characters was well thought out. There is an unexpected love triangle which causes Will more angst but with Ryanna, Jax and Will all determined to avoid hurting the other, things quickly get complicated and it’s a complication that Will is unprepared for and a battle he’s too weak to take on.

This is definitely not a book to read if you are looking for a light and easy storyline. It is brutal in its truth and reveals emotional depths so low that most people would be unable to understand or appreciate. The subject matter was handled well though without unnecessary angst as Will struggles to find a way to live in the shadow of his past.

All in all a well written book which covers difficult subject matter well and provides its readers with a long awaited happiness for Will as the story twists and turns towards its HEA.

The Fragile Fall is a book that hit me . . .hard. At the beginning I was fooled into thinking that this was a generic NA contemporary romance, but like any talented writer, Kristy Love is able to change this illusion, asking her reader to invest their emotions in the lives of her characters.
Kristy Love deals with a rarely talked about issue; mental illness in young men. It is painful for us to watch Will's demise as his grief and PTSD take hold. The first-person narration, shared between Will and Ryanne, means that we are able to forge a personal connection with the characters and Will's depression becomes a palpable thing.
Will's story develops slowly, using flashbacks, helping us to understand the full extent of his misplaced guilt following his parents' accident. Kristy Love is careful not to present Will as weak, instead she goes against what may be common opinion about Will's coping methods, and reveals the strength in his decisions. This is a brave decision by the author and sends a positive message to any readers who are suffering from mental health issues.
Will is perhaps the central character in The Fragile Fall, but his new neighbours, Ryanne and Jax, also have pivotal roles. It is Ryanne whom Will meets first and there is an instant attraction between them. The relationship they share brings them both happiness and we are able to stand by and watch, as their feelings for each other grow.
However, Jax is my favourites character. He has a charming arrogance and though he makes poor decisions, he believes it is for the best. He offers Will a friendship, when Will is lonely and stands beside him despite his actions. I really hope that Kristy Love considers writing Jax his own story.
The Fragile Fall is an emotional book, which is guaranteed to make any reader cry, but Kristy Love also offers us the opportunity to see past the drama, giving us hope.
This is definitely a recommendation from me!

When I read the synopsis for this book, I was really not sure what I was going in to. This is Kristy Love’s debut novel and it was solid at that. This is not your typical teenager romance…it is so much more than that. It is about pain, grief, remorse, and eventually acceptance.

Will is not your average teenage boy. He was homeschooled by his church-abiding parents and forced to live a very straighten arrow childhood. At times, he is very naïve as he really didn’t have any friends when he was growing up and his parents very strict. When a tragedy leaves him parentless he is forced to live with his Aunt halfway across the country. Each and every day is a struggle for him to get up. He is literally being eaten alive by his parent’s passing and blames himself for it entirely.

Ryanne and Jax are Will’s Aunt’s neighbors. They are brother and sister whose father is non-existent. Ryanne has been forced to raise Jax for the last few years. Once Ryanne sees Will staring at her through the window, she knows she to make him her friend. She is just that type of person, always thinking of everyone but her. Jax and Will are the same age so they bond quickly, well at least as quickly Will allows it. Being burned in the past along with his upbringing he deems himself unworthy of having friends. Ryanne and Will’s friendship turns into something more after so many ups and downs but it is completely worth it in the end.

I did have a slight problem with Ryanne and Will’s relationship. I didn’t really feel like I “connected” with them. I wanted to FEEL their passion not just be told about it. On a side note, I did enjoy the great friendship that Jax and Ryanne had. You could tell that these two were not only siblings but also friends.

Kristy did a great job dealing with such a sensitive subject, I give her mad props for that.

ARC generously provided by publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Will led a sheltered life. He was homeschooled by his parents, his parents picked out his friends, dictated his schedule, and made every decision for him. Will broke out and made one decision for himself and the results of that decision changed his life completely.

Now will is living with his aunt, dealing with grief and guilt. He doesn't know how to have friends or even be with people. He doesn't trust and he is full of pain and turmoil. Then he meets RyAnne and Jax his aunts neighbors who are his age. Finally Will begins to find out what it is like to not be lonely but he is still so filled with pain. Can these two new people in his life help him, if he can bear to let them in?

This is such a touching story. Will is such a great guy but a little stunted due to his upbringing. He is filled with so much pain and guilt he doesn't know how to function. Finally he finds RyAnne and knows that she is someone who takes the pain away. She likes him for him and he likes being with her. But the last thing he wants is to come between her and her brother so he is torn.

I don't want to give any spoilers away but I will say that Will's journey is painful but so rewarding. Then the book flips and it becomes more about Ryannes journey. I would have given this book 5 stars but I had to take a star away for how Ryanne and Jax's family situation is dealt with in the end. The part about how they felt or dealt with the mom I just had a hard time buying. Other then that this is a really sweet read that teaches about forgiveness and acceptance.

I was fortunate enough to beta read this book for Kristy earlier this year; Will & Ryanne's story stuck with my for a very long time. We are treated to a duel narration between Will and Ryanne's POV that illustrates both of their stories flawlessly.

Will is a bit if a recluse, recently moving to town and in with his Aunt Liv. When he befriends his neighbors, Jax and his sister Ryanne things seem to start opening up for Will. After the horrific events that brought him to his aunt's - Will is desperate for anything that will lift him out of his past, and hopefully to a brighter future.

Ryanne is struggling with her own set of issues; raising her teenage brother Jax as her father is away working 99% of the time, and the other 1% emotionally out of the picture, all the while trying to go to college and have a life outside of the home. Her boyfriend is less than helpful throughout -

As Ryanne and Will get closer their chemistry is inevitable but Ryanne is scared to move things forward in case it didn't work out - she'd ruin the friendship Will and Jax have, and she struggles with her feelings....trying to do the "right" thing keeps them further and further apart.

It's a touching story of emotional struggles, Will dealing with his loss - and Ryanne dealing with her loss. And you root for these two to come together hoping the feelings they have can help heal their pasts and give them a future worth looking forward too.

When we first meet Will, he’s very timid and shy for a seventeen year old. He just recently moved in with his aunt, and he spends his days a recluse until the pretty girl next door and her brother invite him over. He connects with both of them immediately. Jax becomes the real friend he never had, and his older sister Ryanne starts to become everything Will never knew he wanted but feels he doesn’t deserve.

We find out Will’s very sad story, growing up sheltered by his parents and losing them the one night he decides to be rebellious. The grief and guilt suffocates him each day, until finally he turns on himself. His new family and friends rally against him to fight back and be young man he wants to be but doesn’t think he can.

Ryanne is Will’s first real love, and you feel their pull towards each other with every interaction. Each kiss they share leaves you breathless and wanting much more. Ryanne may be older, but she falls hard for Will. He’s never learned how to be anything but pure and honest when it comes to love, and shows Ryanne what it’s like to be adored.

Jax and Ryanne have a great closeness that is rare in brothers and sisters. Ryanne had to become Jax’s parent along the way, leaving them both hurt and vulnerable for different reasons. Jax was a great character, caring, funny and playful with an alpha streak. I would love to see how he reacts when he falls in love.

A Fragile Fall was a sweet story about true love, the power of friendship, and finding strength when you think you’re too broken. I look forward to more from Kristy Love!

Imagine one night of being reckless changing your life forever. Being so young and living your life with guilt and being haunted by memories.

“I don’t think I deserve to let go of the guilt. I don’t deserve forgiveness.”

This book is very emotional. The prologue is powerful, drawing you in from the start. Kristy’s writing is beautiful and takes you through Will’s battle of life after going through a terrible tragedy. It’s written in a beautiful way that helps you feel what Will is feeling and understand his torments. It’s deep, it’s raw, and it will tear at your heart.

“Most days I felt like I was on the bottom of the ocean with coldness seeping into my bones and the unbearable weight pressing me into the sand.”

It was great to see a relationship build for Will between Ryanne and her brother Jax and Will feel like he could be happy. The bond that develops between the 3 of them was beautiful. Aunt Liv was also such great support and it was nice to see Will’s relationship with her evolve.

As Will’s story begins to unfold and we find out more about what happened to his parents, his past demons creep through. We are taken on a heartfelt journey as Will tries to find his way.

“My life was in a dangerous tailspin and I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep it up.”

This is a beautiful story about dealing with your inner demons, finding strength within yourself, and allowing others in. It’s written in such a manner that you feel so many emotions: pain, hope, love. Excellent debut novel!

“You’ve been my strength, let me be yours.”

This is a tough one for me. On one level I connected with The Fragile fall on a personal level having gone through similar situations with friends. I didn't expect the subjects that were brought to light so it was kind of a shock. However, on the other hand it didn't really hold my attention the whole way through and I can't hep but feel something is missing.

I've read a lot of books that deal with self harm and I've seen a lot of variations (good and bad). For the first 39% I couldn't stop reading this book. I wanted to see Will recover and I wanted the relationship with Ry to help him. I also wanted to know what the root of his guilt was and why he felt he was to blame. These two things kept me reading. It set things up to be emotional.

Sadly though, the writing in this book just wasn't for me. In general the plot was solid, but things jumped around too much for me. Scenes were rather short and there was a lot of telling. I found myself reading "we did this and then this and this" and some of those scenes I would have liked to read. I never felt connected with the characters or that there was a development in the relationship.

There was growth in the characters. I thought Will grew clearly and the twists with Ry were intriguing. It's a shame I never really fell in love with them. For me they didn't stand out enough to care. I found my attention drifting as there was just a disconnect.

Overall this was an okay read. It was a touching, realistic story that may be for you but it didn't work for me unfortunately.
