As many others, I love Grumpy Cat. Technically, I feel sorry for her since she is a pet cat that has been put in the spotlight by her owner's brother and later, after she had become an internet sensation, by her owner (there's even a movie about her / starring her)! Her real name is Tardar Sauce by the way and she is a mixed breed getting her famous appearance from an underbite and feline dwarfism.
Anyway, this is a cute little picture book of Grumpy Cat and Pokey, the "other cat" in the house. Pokey is thrilled about Christmas, the lights, the snow outside and basically everything, while Grumpy Cat - naturally - isn't thrilled. But Pokey is determined to get Grumpy Cat to join in on the fun, leading to some hilarious situations.
The book is filled with really good art that even manages to sneak in a pun. I loved the illustrations very much as they were colourful and cute (except when portraying Grumpy Cat, of course, she's never "cute" *sarcasm mode off*). ;) Some examples:
I laughed a lot while reading this since I can't escape the charm of Grumpy Cat either (aren't we all grumpy cats?!) and can therefore recommend this to people on the love AND hate spectrum of Christmas.
Internet sensation Grumpy Cat stars in Grumpy Cat's First Worst Christmas. Grumpy's friend, Pokey, tries everything she can think of to get Grumpy Cat in the holiday spirit. She suggests making a snow-cat, decorating the Christmas tree and even baking cookies for Santa.
Grumpy Cat cannot seem to find anything to like about the most wonderful time of the year. Instead, she wants to live in her wonderland of NO. Will Pokey be able to change Grumpy Cat's mind and keep her off of Santa's naughty list?
I am a huge Grumpy Cat fan, however, I was greatly disappointed with this book. I found Grumpy Cat to be too grumpy and very depressing. While I did chuckle at several instances of Grumpy Cat's grumpiness, I do not feel that the few laughs saved the book.
There also seems to be no plot to the story. The whole theme is simply Grumpy Cat hating Christmas. I do not think that this is a very good story to read to children, especially during the holidays, which are supposed to be happy and joyous occasions.
While I realize that Grumpy Cat's claim to fame are memes showcasing her sassy and grumpy attitude, this book is simply too one dimensional and melancholy for me. I feel that this story is more geared towards adults who would better appreciate Grumpy Cat's personality.
I'd give this book more stars if I could, but sadly GoodReads has a broken staring system and I'm only allowed to put 5 stars. The plot was absolutely riveting, the writing was engrossing and the character development was on par with what I'd expect from A Big Golden Book. Seriously, I haven't seen a character go from '0 to NO' this hard since The Little Engine that Could, though in that case it was from 'No to 0' so really it's not the same, but I tried.
Pokey is a precious cinnamon roll hot from the oven. Will probably burn the inside of your mouth and you won't be able to taste anything properly for a week straight. Ever have that happen? That happened to me once, it was awful. 0/10, would not recommend.
I do recommend this book though. It's a great book. One for every occasion but mostly for Christmas. However, if you don't like Christmas, cats, or internet memes, this book may not be for you.
I'm not going to lie; I still find Little Golden Books absolutely charming. From the earliest inception of these books, the illustrations have been done by some of the best fine artists in history, and the little stories are sweet.
In this one, Grumpy Cat just wants some quiet time. Her enthusiastic sibling, Pokey, is excited about everything Christmas and won't leave Grumpy alone.
A paean to all of those who would like a little peace and quiet during a busy season, with the added humor that only Grumpy Cat can provide.
I rarely rate children's books, but I have to insert my opinion on this one. One of my kids picked it up at the library and when we read it I thought, Oh, this looks like it's got some nice illustrations and probably a good message...? Wrong. It's a pointless and very negative book, and not good for children at all. Unless you want to encourage your children to be grumpy all of the time and hate Christmas. I kept waiting for a positive shift in the story that never came. I can't believe this book has so many good reviews. I would give it zero stars if that were possible.
I love the pictures, I loved the ending, but the story just seemed like the author decided "lets write a grumpy cat story" and this was the result. The story was pointless. Grumpy cat has my attitude so that is why I really like her but man!! That is all that I can say.
Grumpy Cat is adorable even when she's hating on Christmas! A cute little Christmas tail that helps us remember all the awesome things about the holiday and that it's okay if others don't find it as awesome as you do. Naughty list be damned.
Ugh. This book was such a downer. I realize, perhaps, that that's kind of the point, but it kind of put me in a grumpy mood reading it to my 5-year-old. The one good thing that could come from it is that it shows people what it's like when they complain all the time -- it's no fun to be around!
