Ian W Sainsbury is a musician, composer, writer, comedian and puppet wrangler (yes, that's a real job). Obviously, he doesn't know what to do when he grows up and - now that he's in his forties - he's resigned to the fact that he probably never will.

Definitely needs to be made into a TV series!

This series captured me from the start. I fell in love with Seb and am glad I got 4 books worth to indulge myself with. I can't compare world walker to any other series, it stands alone in my mind and for that alone, it deserves the 5 stars. Honestly, just go and read it. It's part of kindle unlimited, there's no excuses!

This book was so disappointing, and the fact that it had so much potential just made the disappointment that much more painful to face.

Religion : Romance : World Walkers

Religion:
At the very start of the book a caricature of Jesus is parodied. Muhammadan scripture is elevated for its elegance. Very western mindset. You show your enlightened liberation by poking fun at Christianity, but heaven forbid you do the same to Islam. To poke fun at Islam is not enlightened liberation, but cultural insensitivity. I get so tired of the double standard put forth by "advanced thinkers."

But let's put that aside for a minute. Seb and Jesus agree that they'll touch base on this topic later... so I wait through the entire book for this encounter to become plot relevant... and I wait... and I wait. Other than those first few paragraphs Jesus never appears again, and I'm left scratching my head. Just what exactly did that have to do with anything that followed?

Romance:
Seb, as we know is completely nanotech. He is loosing his attachment to humanity. No wait! He is very attached to Mee and Joni. No wait! he is loosing his attachment to humanity. No wait!

OK already. Make up your mind. You can't just wildly gyrate from one end of the pendulum to the other depending on your romantic developments. Decide just exactly what it is you want Seb to be, and stick with a consistent character development.

World Walker:
Very rare. Just a handful in the multiverse. A random evolutionary offshoot.

Oh, wait. B-J can create one at will. Oh, wait. Seb can create one at will. So, to be consistent, when World Walkers get in a pinch with their foe, really, they can just create more of their own and mosey on??? According to the rules of this book, looks like it.

That was an ending unmatched.

This conclusion of the series is both the most unusual and satisfying as I have read in a very long time. Considering I've seen 75 summers that's quite a statement.

I love with the characters!

I chose this rating because Sainsbury delivered a world with characters that I want to have in my life (the main characters, not those baddies)! Sainsbury weaves together humans(& then later not so human) in 4D, focusing on their minds and spirit along with their appearance and personality!
The adventures they go on & the choices they make as life drags them kicking and swearing rings true for (real) heroes who don't know (or realise) how heroic they are! Speaking of heroics, I should say that even the antagonists are beings (throughout the series) that are 4D and pull me in to pity, grow suspicious of and cannot stop being disgusted/shocked or forgiving!
I look forward to hearing from Sainsbury's magical mind again! I hope to meet and get to know more of the characters from this series (Sym especially!).
I highly recommend this book and the series! I believe the author has probably captured a wide audience, who will only grow as he continues to weave such adventures!

Heartfelt and deep

The first book was an exciting coming-to-power story. The second was about an overpowered hero who tried to do the right thing. The third was a distraction that bridged the narrative, an interlude, if you will. It's only befitting that the story ended with something more profound and heartfelt than a happy ending, and you can only experience it by reading the whole book, from the first page to the endnotes.

Unexpected but excellent

The story created in these four books were crafted in an easy to follow roller coaster of a tale.
Without allowing for (time travel) it non the less allowed for a complete story to evolve around truly exceptional characters.

Fantastic series!

Loved this author from his first book and, although I have Kindle unlimited, I would have happily paid for these. This is my favourite. If you have found this by accident, go and read the 1st one! You don't be disappointed!

In short: Brilliant. Inspired.

Full review:

I'm going to review all four books in one as I read them back to back. I'm fairly fortunate in that I come to Ian's books late and he had completed the quadrilogy. Lucky for me really. I'm a lover or the larger books as I really like to submerge myself into the story and characters. So for me the four books make one sizeable book, split into four parts. I strongly recommend reading all four back2back and in order. Yes each one can be read separately, and each story stands on its own. But in my opinion, all four books work best together as one epic tale.

The four books chart story of Sebastian Varden. A middling successful musician who starts the first novel as someone about to commit suicide. Not exactly the most foreboding of starts, but one that piques the ole curiosity right from the off.

Now if you read all the other reviews, the vast majority of which give Ian five well deserved stars, you will know each book's story well enough. As a fellow writer I'm going to review these from a writers viewpoint, just to be a little different.

Ian is not afraid to let main characters die. George R. R. Martin has shown the publishing world that you can kill off characters and it is OK. Lets face it, we don't all live in the Disney inspired loveliness that there is a happy ever after for *every* character; well except for the baddies that is. This is one of the many things that I feel adds a depth to the story telling that is missing from other writers.

Ian's characters are *real*. You can connect with them. They exist. You empathise with them. They have flaws, and are all the more real for them. Even the secondary characters have a depth normally missing from other works. These are people, they have more depth than the page they are written on. Top marks!

Ian mixes magic, religion and Science Fiction. A mix that would normally be reserved for SF masters such as Peter F Hamiliton (His Void series) Or a mix which can easily lead to disaster. His touch upon each topic is inspired and illuminating. Respectful is another word. Depending on your take of religion & faith is how you will form your own opinion on this topic. For me, it was thought provoking.

I personally loved the way the characters developed. I liked the way Ian addressed super hero issues. The recent crop of Marvel films have *just* started to address these issues. No longer are they unapproachable icons of perfection. They are flawed, far from perfection. They are real people with all the baggage and imperfections that you and I have. Seb, is this personified. I wish I could write characters this real!

In summary. Great story telling. Enthralling, emotional and immensely readable. I didn't want to put these down. I am genuinely impressed.

P.S. I had to dig my copy of Lao Tzu's book after reading these.

I've read all of the books in this series and, although I think the first one was the best, this one wrapped up Seb's story in such a beautiful and touching way. Not embarrassed to admit it made me cry as I finished it up over breakfast. It truly is one of the best endings I've ever read.

The series in general was interesting and kept me wanting to read the next book in line. Characters are fully developed, the author has no problem with killing them off, even the ones we love. As rough as it is to lose a beloved character, it keeps the stories interesting and is a nice break from the style of writing so many authors have these days, where they seem to fear letting a character go.

There are some humorous moments that had me chuckle out loud. And you won't find any of that cookie-cutter-predictable storyline here. I find it refreshing to not be able to guess what will happen next.

The downside to all of the books for me is that I found it difficult to keep up with some of the nanotechnology, world walking, multi-verse, layers and layers of what is reality, what is not reality jargon. I have to admit that this part was a bit much for me and I had trouble absorbing it.

This was the first time I've read anything from this author and look forward to reading some of his other works.

Come on, religion? These are just macro-memes, culture viruses exploiting natural human tendencies. Like any virus they are competing in being easily transferred and not easy to get rid of, like other memes and languages they evolve and steal pieces from other ideas to make them stronger, more appealing, more fit for contemporary mind, like anything feeding on same limited resource (human involvement) they often try to oust others of same kind. I truly believe that being such an easy concept it would definitely prey on other sentient species about as much as it rides on the back of our culture, like a tick.

This is a decent series, but this book to me has a great chunk of disappointment inside. With other books I though there were some wrong decisions by their characters, but they are personalities, they may be wrong (and I may be wrong). This one has a core idea that just clashes with me.

OMG!

If you have found this book, at wherever you are, lease i employee of you start at book 1!
Sainsbury leader us to new dimensions in fiction, or world as we believe it to be, and oh my goodness do much more.
I can't begin to write a synopsis for these books, actually i don't want too!

I very rarely leave reviews as saying to me is such a personal dialogue with the author, these for his however have been my mind! The characters feel real enough to each out and touch. Their lives, struggles, wants and needs, so simple, believable!

I have no desire to dogs further into this multi level, universe sorry of love. Read it, start at the very beginning, bubble in and enjoy the ride!

Great ending to a remarkable sci-fi serie

To keep the pace and reader hooked for 4 books isn't an easy task but Ian dose it very well as Seb"s life and events during his 17 years departure is explained to his daughter and girlfriend, we get to know why he as a world walker was away for such a long time and it is very well written part of the last book but the events after this and the story's ending is even more surpricing and clever. These 4 sci-fi books and history of Seb and his family and friends lives are among the better i've read in the genre and is a product of a very special mind, cudos to the author and if you havent dug into the World Walker serie yet, have no doubt, it is defently worth it

Quite enjoyable. Not as good as other books in the series. Still, I am hoping this doesn't turn out to be the last in the World Walker series now that *** and *** *** **** (spoiler so asterisks). The author did mention in his Notes at the end the potential still for future books. If not, well, I would be likely to read anything new which comes from Mr. Sainsbury. Wish I could afford to send you a 25-year old bottle of single malt, Ian. But with my budget I couldn't afford even 8-year or even freshly casked. But I promise to get your next book. Okay? We good? Thanks for the entertainment, Ian. Keep with it!!

I really like the concept in these books of the World Walker and magic being alien nanobots. However I felt that the series couldn't decide if is was a love story, science fiction or social commentary and ultimately didn't satisfy any of them. The characters needed more depth, the science more investigation and the commentary some sort of conclusion.
They would probably been better if book 3 was replaced with more about existing main characters rather than a new one which just repeated the same story of hero trying to be killed by an unfeeling crazy person.
They are not bad books, I read all of them! but they could have been a lot more.

Oh how I enjoyed these books and I loved the way Sainsbury ended the series.
The stories looked at many complex theories, evolution, love, religion, humanity to name a few. These books find their strength in their gentleness for me; in family and love, loyalty, and
friendship and the strength and importance they give to the meaning of life and reason for living, the essence of Web's final choice.
A great story, very compelling reading, exciting with excellent plot building and characters you love.

A fitting and sadly satisfying end to a great story

I am not going to spoil the story by going into too much detail but you will have to read the series from the beginning to get the most out of this book. This book is not one of those that can stand alone outside of the series. However, the series has been more than entertaining enough with plenty of twists and turns, although the 3rd installment to me was a bit out of place. Anyway cracking read and had me teared up but happy in the end. Thats all that needs to be said....

What away to end

Ian closed this book so well. I almost cried. We get to find out where Seb went, during his 17 years away. All the friggin twist and turns, you really didn't know where he was going. We get to finally meet other words walkers. Without giving to much away, Seb makes a decision that most would find hard to make.

Ian Sainsbury! Please keep writing. You hinted at possible side stories. Like you said, the possibilities are endless.

EXCELLENT close to this arc. I do hope the author eventually returns to this universe because there is so much potential here and his stories are wonderful.

I couldn't even bring myself to deduct for the ever present poor copy editing. Seriously, he needs a good copy editor. Still, the books are quite good and this wrap was the bomb. It will stay with me for a long time.

I'll read more by this author, for sure.

This was a really good and interesting end to the series. The author left a lot of room to continue the series if he wanted but it was also a good stopping point.

I really want to read about the crazy adventures of Sym/Seb (the computer virus controlled created human) and Fypp the oldest being to ever exist (not a great title but it would be a great story I bet).

Last of the world walker series.

Good conclusion to the series. Much of this book is centered around the period he spends in the 'egg' with the simulation, trying to create a religion. Its conclusion finds that the other world walkers have the same issues as everyone else, basically getting ready for a fight because the simulation didn't go their way.

In the end Seb makes a choice that I suspect most would make but which is probably not understandable by the other world walkers.

My fave in the series

I loved the whole series (although Adam was a bit tedious in being odious), but this last is nonetheless the best. Well-crafted -- author worked beautifully on Mee's cussing phrases -- and fun to read. More twists and turns, each a delight to follow. Great job!

Best part of this series is the author’s end notes.

I have loved living in this world with Seb, Joni and Mee and put off reading the ending as long as I could. (By the way, it ends right!) Just as in the other books in this series, the unexpected pleasure is reading the author’s notes and getting a glimpse of the magic.

Amazing series!

Ahhh Mr Ian....a great book, ahhhgain, but so sad to see it end. So, as to those options you mentioned, about more from These Folks, yeah, look into that!! Loved the way you explored concepts like time and reality, ancient aliens and simulations, religion and enlightenment.....thoroughly enjoyed every word!!

Series bit off a lot and went pretty fast towards the "deciding the fate of the universe" direction. Ultimately it pulled back though and I found the action compelling. Didn't quite go the distance with my connection to the characters to call it a 5 star. And the middle books were a little irrelevant.

Totally awesome series

More philosophical than typical sf. Great characters. I don’t know how an author can think this deep and have as many sub plots that are clearly defined and well thought out but also continue the path of the original story. My thanks for writing this. If you are the reader, you have to read all 4 books to get the significance of the series.

The best book I have read all year!

I have followed this series from first book to last, and just as the first was full of the unexpected, so was the last. This is a captivating series and this culminating book was absolutely wonderful.

I love scifi, and this series, especially this last book of the series, has reinforced to me why I love that genre so, so much.

Brilliant themes, but not my execution

I dig where Ian went with this one. The ideas and themes were a fun place to play. However, each story just wasn’t wrapped up in a way that spoke to me, same with a bit of the character development. Doesn’t take away from the book, or series— all worth the reads and definitely recommend.
