I tried the crockpot pepperoni pizza recipe. It was good, but I think using the words "fix it and forget it" for this cookbook is false advertising. I had to complete multiple steps in 60-90 minute intervals, first kneading the dough and leaving it; cooking the dough for 90 minutes, then cooking the whole pizza complete with toppings for another hour. It made a nice pizza though!
-has a picture for every recipe! the way a cookbook should be. -things don't brown or crisp up in the crock pot the way they do in the oven. -be careful with the moisture on the lid, don't let it drip onto what you're baking when you remove the lid.
-recipes that looked good: strawberries and cream bread, lotsa blueberries cake, banana nut cake, summer breeze cake (mandarin oranges and pineapple), lightly white pear cake, sour cream peach cake, banana pecan bars, cherry cheesecake bars, deep dish fruity delight, any-fruit-that-makes-you-happy cobbler, peaches and pudding crisp, peach cobbler, apple pear crisp, raspberrioca, daily bread, polish pizza.
I acquired this book through World of Books (used) having been alerted to it by someone else I follow and I have to say that it is brilliant. I have never used my slow cooker for anything other than casseroles and soups but this book has cakes, puddings and even pizzas. The first few I've tried all worked out fine. The instructions are clear, but you will need a cooker with a 'high' setting on it to make some of them work. One caution, the book (or at least my copy of it) is printed in the USA so the measurements are in cups, etc. so you will need to convert.
This is a truly amazing cookbook! Who knew you could bake cakes, pies, and quick breads in your slow cooker? These recipes are perfect if you have two slow cookers, one for dinner and the other for dessert. Cobblers and puttings turn out well too. This book is a lot of fun!
I really like this book, it is full of fantastic recipes of sweets I would actually eat and like to serve. It is nice that you can mix up things, put them in the crock pot and have them baked while you are busy doing other things. I do love to bake, and using your oven would be quicker, but you have to be nearby it the entire time it is going and you definitely can not leave the house. I checked this book out from the library but after reading though it I decided it is the next book on my to buy list! Most of the recipes are completely from scratch, again something I really like. However for those of you that really like to use boxes and cans there is a chapter called shortcut cakes that does call for boxed cake mixes and canned fruits. All of the other chapters cover things from cakes to granola with lots of recipes between. Some of the breads and crusts might need time to rise, but other wise most of the recipes are mix, put it in and let it cook for up to 4 hours. Nothing in this book cooks longer than 4 hours and most are much shorter at around 2 hours. The other thing to keep an eye out for is that some of the recipes bake straight in your crockery and others you put the mixes into pans or ramekins and then put those into the crockery. Overall good ideas with solid instructions.
Rating this cookbook is difficult for me because I can't bring myself to actually bake in a slow cooker. The only times I ever use a slow cooker are when I'm making apple butter or when I'm bringing a dish to a party that should keep warm (usually chili). So I'm going to stick to using the oven for baking.
However, I think this cookbook is pretty interesting because I would never have thought of using a slow cooker to bake! It's really creative and it may get more people to start baking. The book also contains a lot of recipes. I like that there are recipes where everything is done from scratch, but also recipes that use box mixes so everyone can find something to try. There are also sweet and savory dishes, which is nice. While I may not try any of these (although they sound really good!), I think this was a great cookbook.
Interesting idea of baking in a crock pot. Recipes sound delish. I pulled a couple to try. Not really sure if it's worth all the hassle; might just be easier to bake it in the oven but I'm willing to try!
